Bulls-centric draft lottery thread

[I hereby declare this thread official. -ed.]

As we all know, tonight's the night that badly managed organizations, like the Bulls, can fall ass-backwards into a franchise changing star.  Make no mistake - if that 1 and 7/10ths ping pong ball hadn't bounced our way, we'd be sweating it out right now, watching highlights of John Wall in his weirdly tight jersey and baggy shorts.  Unfortunately, tonight, similarly low odds have the chance to bite us in the ass.

Star-divide

It's debatable how much of an impact the worst case scenario can have in determining free agency.  Everyone seems to think the world of John Wall, for instance - who might have led the nation in turnovers as a point guard if it hadn't been for Evan Turner - despite the fact that he could not do with perhaps 4 first round picks what Derrick Rose did with none.  So let's debate it.    What's the doomsday scenario for us, and what's the best?

And the always popular - who you got at 17?

I’m on the James Anderson boat, I have a feeling the Nets won’t land the No. 1 pick, it will be the Pacers, followed by the Jazz, and Kings

by QUINTEN DALEY on May 18, 2010 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

I'll take the Warriors, then the Pistons, then the Timberwolves

Wait, what? I’m not even sure what we’re doing.

But just for fun, let’s play NBA Conspiracy Game. Pick a team whose front office has screwed up miserably in recent years, but has enough talent where a #1/#2/#3 pick can either turn them into a contender or save them from relocation! See: 2009 Clippers, Grizz, Thunder, 2008 Bulls, Heat, 2007 Blazers, Sonics, Hawks. Not sure how the 2008 T’Wolves (#3 pick) slipped through.

In my opinion, bottom-10-record teams who would most benefit the NBA with a top 3 pick:

1. New Jersey
2. Sacramento
3. Philadelphia
4. LA Clippers
5. Detroit

Sorry Timberwolves, Warriors, Wizards, Jazz, possibly Pacers. You have no future and there are no rumors of moving your teams. Maybe next year.

by YaoPau on May 18, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

lol

I would up Detroit to 4 and move LA to 5, maybe 6. Maybe trade Philly and Sacramento.

defnintely rumors of moving the Pacers

so put them in :)

I want a webcam at TJ Ford’s place (or the club he happens to be at) if Pacers get #1 overall

Then I’m leaning on NJ & the Kings…

Tyreke is gonna be a big star and getting Wall may give the NBA a big money making franchise again…

That and NJ’s going Russian soon…

After about a year and a half, I've finally got around to giving myself a profile. Yay me!

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

by Alighieri on May 18, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

The Jazz or Hornets would be most interesting...

Who would they take #1 overall or would they become the first team since the Magic to trade the #1 overall pick for three future first round picks and the #3?

Detroit and Indiana can suck it, no team in the Bulls division deserve any sort of breaks…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

id like to see NOH get it. chris paul needs a team.

I'd agree with that.

Western conference so doesn’t hurt the Bulls as much as many otamsher te, and fun to watch.

Would make it a Must-See game for me again when he comes to town if he had another elite player.

Who knows could always trade the pick.

Lots of options for a team like that.

An even better team to root for:

the Utah Jazz; just to stick it to those arrogant Knicks fans.

Of course the Jazz would probably select Turner at #1, but I can’t help but laugh at NYK fans and their presumptious ownership of LeBron’s thoughts and aspirations. They deserve to be let down.

Lance Stephenson

Last year he was ranked top 5 of his class. I have him as the 7th best prospect.
Wall
Turner
Cousins
Favors
Johnson
Henry
Stephenson

by TRiCioNeRo on May 18, 2010 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind the bulls pick him,as long as he learns how to stay out of trouble

Stephenson will be a good pick for some team but i don’t think the bulls will draft him in june, becasuse they only work out paul george, james johnson, xavier henry and samardo samuels the last couple of days ago. I would like the bulls to move up and trade up and pick henry, i think he is the best outside shooter in this years draft.

by Jermal on May 18, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I was listening to the Dan Patrick show yesterday

and they had Chris Mannix on, who has to be just awful at his job, because they asked him about the Lebron sweepstakes and he said the lottery is gonna be a game changer. Why? Because if the Bulls get the number one pick and have a chance at Wall that could sway Lebron towards Chicago, Umm…

If you're reading this signature, there's a good chance you don't like Vinny Del Negro.

by Orange Juice on May 18, 2010 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

Best case scenario from our perspective is this

1. Minnesota
2. GS
3. Jazz
4. Nets
5. Kings
6. Washington
7. Philly
8. Detroit
9. Clippers

The Nets missing out on a top 3 pick skewers their 2010 chances. The Clippers slipping to 9 also hurts them. The Kings getting a top 3 pick would also be bad. I don’t know why their name hasn’t come up in the 2010 discussion, but they have max cap space and Tyreke Evans + Wall/Turner would have to be very enticing for any free agent big. Throw in Carl Landry, Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawes, and Omri Casspi, and they have a ton of young talent.

Finally if the Jazz jumped up to no.3 and landed Cousins or Favors, they’d be a lot less likely to try and resign and Boozer, which is also good for us.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 18, 2010 5:19 PM CDT reply actions

I could see all 3 passing on Wall

The Kings, Bullets, 76ers, or Pistons have to pick before the Nets

by TRiCioNeRo on May 18, 2010 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

No way in hell 3 teams pass on Wall

If Wall slips to no.3, Utah gets on the phone and trades the pick and there will be plenty of takers.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 18, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Regarding the Kings

Add Donte Greene to that mix of young talent, too. Plus, Udrih, Nocioni, and Francisco Garcia are also all signed through next year and each of them shoots 37%+ from 3-pt range. Why the hell aren’t the Kings looked at as a top 2010 destination? Let’s say they land Evan Turner and sign Bosh. That gives them this:

PG Udrih/Evans
SG Evans/Garcia/Turner
SF Turner/Casspi/Nocioni
PF Bosh/Landry/Greene/Thompson
C Thompson/Hawes

Are they a contender? Maybe not quite, but they’re at least as good as the Thunder were this year, and not one of those guys is over 30 except Noc, who probably plays less than 10 mpg on that team anyways. Maybe consolidate some of that talent by packaging a couple of their young bigs and Nocioni for an elite defensive-minded player at SF or C (Luol Deng would actually be a really good fit) and that’s a hell of a team.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 18, 2010 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

because they are in sacramento

And unless they get a new arena they are leaving at some point.

by The90sBullsRevival on May 18, 2010 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Expanding on that

Let’s say they got any free agent PF and we got Lebron. Wouldn’t a trade of Luol Deng for Carl Landry, Francisco Garcia and Casspi make a lot of sense for both sides?

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 18, 2010 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Despite all the hype about Lebron,

I’m still hoping for Bosh – I see the Knicks in the King’s future. As long as Toronto doesn’t win the lotto, I’m pretty happy.

The idea...

Is that he would be willing spend above the luxury tax with little financial conscience…ala Mark Cuban or James Dolan; and as such, money would be no object for his team’s pursuit of a title. This is contrasted with the ownership group in Chicago, who refused to pay tax for shitty teams in 00’s, and would not pay tax for Ben Gordon…

How come no one has a 1.6% chance in this one? Have they changed the percentages?

It goes from 1.1 to 2.2

The 9th best chance (which is what the Bulls had in 08) is the one with a 2.2% chance

No one was taking Arenas

They knew they were stuck with him, which is why they traded everyone else.

They can trade Wall, but the enthusiasm factor makes that a really bad sell in Washington.

That's the best part

They have to take him and will never be able to unload Arenas’ contract. And they have no more trade assets besides Blatche

You know how this ALSO benefits the Bulls?

With Favors and Cousins available at the 3rd spot, they won’t be spending all that free agent money on a PF. They need a wing badly. They just might be the ones who overpay Joe Johnson!

This couldn't have been...

much better for the Bulls. I never bought that Lebron would go to NJ to play with Wall. But, I did think he could be used in a possible sign and trade for a 2nd free agent (i.e. Bosh) to couple with Lebron. I was waiting for Prokhorov to start flipping tables. The ball is very much in our court – pun intended!

From True Hoop
Washington Wizards: $41.02 million in 2010-11 payroll
It’s a safe bet that they’ll decline the team option on Josh Howard’s $11.84 million. If we project that Quinton Ross exercises his $1.15 million player option and the Wizards hang onto their high draft pick (let’s project it as the No. 4 overall pick) and Cleveland’s late first-rounder, they’d be committed to roughly $33 million for eight bodies. Do they extend a $4.8 million qualifying offer to guard Randy Foye? If they do, that brings them up to approximately $38 million, maybe enough wiggle room to offer a max contract. Without Foye, they’ve got plenty to offer a max player.

there are no other players there! Teams will be able to focus solely on Wall and force him into jumpers. Also, it’s hard to get voted into the ASG playing for losing teams. Rose came into a team with some talent as did Jennings and they both missed the ASG.. not to mention Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo who each took 3-4 years. I think with Rondo getting hyped like he is now, expect him to have a good shot at making the ASG next year if healthy. Wall could end up in Deron Williams position, great player but stuck in line for an ASG berth.

Is good news for Lebron in Chicago. That would be an amazing team in LA and Lebron would have to pick the best winning option which is Chicago. This is something the Jordan-Pippen Bulls never did! This is for the NEW generation of Bulls fans!

I think this is a great draft

So I’m a little disappointed that three eastern conference teams won the lottery. The Sixers getting Turner is massive since they need a shooting guard. Nets could have an all-NBA interior for a long time. But yeah, no Nets #1 is nice.

by JustAnotherFan on May 18, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Has it?

All three lottery winners last year were western conference. The year before the Bulls improved thanks to Rose, Beasley was a flop for Miami, Mayo/Love were western conference. The year before that Oden/Durant were western conference.

by YaoPau on May 18, 2010 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't look at it like that

by sheer numbers of quality teams, sure the Western Conference is superior. But I like to look at it by the number of elite teams in each conference. I would say there’s only one elite team in the West while there are three (Boston seems to have shockingly joined this group) in the East. All it takes is the improvement of one or two teams in the East and age catching up with a couple teams like Phoenix and Dallas and we should start seeing a power shift.

by Juiceboxjerry on May 18, 2010 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i think if anything these playoffs proved theres really only one or two elite teams in the east

atlanta is far far far far away from one. cleveland is a one man show
id say boston and the lakers are the two elite teams and maybe orlando a close 3rd

that being said the west has a ton more quality teams which makes the playoffs alot more exciting and the playoff race

meanwhile you have the east where no one. and i mean NO ONE had any doubt the bottom 4 were going to lose since they barely even belonged there

How many more years will they suck for? I wish there was a way of working this out

by rick_ross on May 18, 2010 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends on who the overpay for...

But at least 3, because, I think they’ve traded away their next 3 first round draft picks. And if they max out their cap room on Joe Johnson and Carlos Boozer, they will be a lottery team in 3 years, and might get better if they draft well.

I’d guess that NY is bad for at least 6 more years.

2010... where relevant basketball in Chicago happens!

by kidronmusic on May 19, 2010 4:45 AM CDT up reply actions

My two cents:

1. Sign James
2. Trade Deng + cash/pick to Portland for Rudy Fernandez + Webster
3. Trade Gibson to Utah for Millsap (free some cap space for Utah)

Any thoughts?

by bryield on May 18, 2010 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

ahaahahahahah

Trade Taj for Millsap..Thats comical

by rick_ross on May 18, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Firstly Salaries dont match

Millsap : $10,300,000
Taj : $1,039,800

Secondly : Millsap is a Way better player than TAJ
been in the League 3 more years than TAJ
And is About the same age as TAJ…( one year older)

Averages Better numbers than TAJ playing off the Bench
Millsap : 11.8 PPG off Bench 53% Shooting off the bench
Taj : 9 PPG as a starter, 49% shooting as a starter

Millsap as a starter : 13.5 PPG , 8.6 rebounds, 53% shooting

Utah signed Millsap a 4 year 32 Million Contract this Season

This move makes no sense for Utah

by rick_ross on May 18, 2010 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Where did you get the salary for Millsap?

My sources tell me he is making $7.6M next season

I read the same rumor, that the Jazz would be willing to trade Millsap when they resign Boozer…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on May 19, 2010 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

not sure how much Gibson for Milsap improves us

I’d say better offense but maybe worse defense

by JustAnotherFan on May 18, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

But I have a problem with his lack of consistency.

Back from the dead

by JustAnotherFan on May 18, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm assuming we would need to get rid of Deng...

So, I guess my main question is whether we could put together a trade for another scorer.

by bryield on May 18, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not play Deng at 4?

Taj is fine off the bench. If we sign LeBron I don’t see any problem with trying Deng at power forward. He’s not a natural there but I don’t see the point in trading him for players of lesser talent just because they play power forward.

by JustAnotherFan on May 18, 2010 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

No

It depends on who the rest of the starters are. You don’t need an all star at every position, and a Taj without plantar fasciitis who improves even a little over how he played at the end of the year could certainly be league average.

Why the hell is this team going to make the Finals (sorry Orlando no faith in a team with Dwight and VC) when they were a .500 team after Christmas? Pretty shocking how quickly it’s become Rondo’s show.

I feel sorry for Wall

He is going to one of the worst team in the nba and will not start unless they trade arenas. If the nets or sixers had the number 1 pick he would be starting and would be on a little better of a team too

by Jermal on May 18, 2010 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

rose (his first year) and rondo do just fine with a crappy jump shot

i think he’ll at least live up to the hype. dont know how far he can improve the wizards on his own though

by sin on May 18, 2010 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about that

The Wizards are really bad. Let’s say Wall goes out and puts up a PER of 18, averaging 20 and 6, with a TS% of .530. That’d be living up to the hype, no? It’d be better than Rose’s rookie year.

Well that’s exactly the production that Tyreke Evans put out this year, and Sacramento still ended up with the 3rd worst record in the league.

Brad Miller is god.

and they even had "okay" contributions from Udrih, Casspi, Hawes, Thompson and then Landry.

I have no idea how they were so bad.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I'm really interested in where Aminu might go.

I think he’d be an excellent fit for Minnesota. Favors or Cousins are probably the better players, but with Jefferson, Pekovic and Love, I’d “trust” that I have my front line and take Aminu. After that, you screw the Bulls and take James Anderson or Xavier Henry with the 16th pick. Flynn/Rubio + Anderson/Henry + Aminu + Love + Jefferson/Pekovic has got to be there best chance at building anything worthwhile.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
