Quick look back and ahead at the Bulls/Raptors race

[From the Fanposts. I've been without Comcast service for the entire weekend, so nothing new and exciting for you today. But we can talk schedule: Bulls have caught a break (literally, ha!) with Andrew Bogut's injury hampering (and perhaps demoralizing, though never count out Skiles) the Bucks as the come into the United Center on Tuesday.

Toronto has a much tougher opponent in Cleveland, though they've just clinched home court throughout the playoffs and have nothing to play for anymore. At least they face the Bulls once again too in these potentially LeBron-resting games. First round opponent, don't want to show the Bulls too much...or something? -ed.]

The Warriors just beat the Raptors in Toronto.. even though they tried their best to give it away.

Chris Bosh had 42 and 12 and got a little bit of contribution from Andrea Bargnani and Jarrett Jack, with 18 and 19 respectively.  All other Raptors scored in single digits.

They went up big on the Raptors early in the game, but in the 4th quarter, the Raptors scored 33 to the Warriors' 25 to nearly steal the game back.

But they didn't.

Thanks Golden State.  :)

Just looked at Toronto's remaining schedule

vs. CLE, vs. BOS, vs. ATL, vs. CHI, vs. NYK.

Could definitely go 2-3 or 1-4 during that stretch.

Gibson really amazes me

Chapuforyou you wrote what I’ve been mulling over. How does Gibson’s starling development impact who we go for in free agency? Taj’s play really has shocked and impressed me. Yes Bosh, Stodemire and Boozer would be better than Taj but how much better? It seems we would be best if we could steal Wade or with Joe Johnson than have Gibson back up one of the top 3 free agent power forwards.

I never in my wildest imagination would believe Gibson should even be mentiooned in the same sentence as Bosh, Stodemire and Boozer. Please – I am not saying Gibson is better than those three but he is a game impactor at an incredibly low price. With Gibson so impressive it seems we need a shooting guard more than a power forward, particularly if Gibson improves next season. This is still his rookie year. I was upset that Tyrus didn’t get the starting job back after his broken arm healed. You have to give Gibson and the Bulls coaching staff credit as well as Paxson for the find of the draft. I was furious Paxson took Gison over Blair. Paxson 1 chgobr 0. This kid is the real deal. I think he makes the layup Bosh misses.

Gibson's impact an interesting topic for discussion

I was as big a Gibson skeptic as anyone here. He has not only played well but is now contributing crunch time for a playoff contender. I am also shocked about my change in perception. This is hard for me to digest as it is for others. Gibson will be 25 next year. He is a much better player today than the start of the season. His post game is better; his free throw shooting is better; his shot is improved; and his defense is excellent. I do not know how much better he will be next year. Maybe I’m seeing this through Bulls’ red or Rose colored glassess. Gibson has become a consistent contributor as a rookie on a playoff contending team. Re-evluating our free agent needs in light of Gibson’s significant improvment is a topic worthy of discussion.

by chgobr on Apr 5, 2010 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

No he's talking about taking passing up a top 10 player to sign a different top 10 player because a rookie playing less than 35 minutes is having a nice season.

Honestly, it does change things a little bit. I’d still prefer Bosh to Wade, but not by as much. And I’m starting to question whether JJ might be a better signing than Boozer.

I find them to be equally unattractive.

I would rate Lee and Scola above Boozer…and certainly would look for Rudy Gay or maybe Ray Allen on the cheap before Joe Johnson.

by QUINTEN DALEY on Apr 5, 2010 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

How is Boozer "way better" than David Lee?

They seem pretty similar, only Lee is 2 years younger and has no history of injuries.

by Ozzie Montana on Apr 5, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

His game is much better,

can rebound, play the PNR, post up option, better shooter, and commands a double team

by QUINTEN DALEY on Apr 5, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't call him a better shooter

I went to Hoopdata and looked at each player’s %assisted, expecting Boozer’s to be lower, as he seems better at creating his own shot. Surprise, Boozer’s at 75.6 while Lee’s at 64.4. This seems to indicate that Boozer benefits greatly from playing with Deron Williams, and that if he wasn’t playing alongside an all-star PG, Lee would have better numbers.

Boozer is still

the better player, he balled in Clev and is still balling in Utah, I don’t care what your fancy pants stats say, Boozer still commands a double team, the Bulls need another player besides Rose that commands a double team, he is a better post player than Lee, thats what the Bulls need a post scorer and somebody that commands a double team

The question becomes

how much do you improve going from Taj to Bosh vs Hinrich to Wade or Joe Johnson. Hinrich is so horrible, relative to his position, and at an age where he is less likely to significantly improve that you might rather find a replacement for him and start Taj, rather than go for Bosh.

Between Joe Johnson and Wade – it’s 100% Wade. Not only is Wade the superior player, but he’s played like half the games that JJ has played. Wade is less likely to go sour.

It’s all moot though because the Org likes Hinrich too much to trade him and his contract is too horrible for anyone to be willing to take him. So Bosh it is with a very nice backup in Taj coming off the bench.

by berzerkulous on Apr 5, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

that's the first time I heard Wade's injury history used as a positive :)

less tread.

But anyway, I don’t view Hinrich or Taj as significant enough to factor into the decision. Wade’s the best player, so get him first. Bosh is the next best, so then him.

I’d soften on Amare/Lee/Boozer being debateable with Joe Johnson, but only on their own merits, not on the existence of Taj or Hinrich. Both are insignificant in a signing this big.

I do think it's a positive

In that Wade has been free from injuries the last two seasons and has been performing at a super-high level. There is little reason to believe he would be injury prone.

I’d go for Amare > JJ > Lee > Boozer.

by berzerkulous on Apr 5, 2010 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

That's about what I'd go with

Maybe Boozer ahead of Lee.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on Apr 5, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed...

Anyone who is looking at Taj or Kirk or even Luol for that matter, and thinking that player should impact our free agent decisions, does not understand the magnitude of this potential signing…

I think you can win a championship with any of those guys starting, but not all of those guys…so, the Bulls would be wise to target the top guys, then work their way down…Lebron, Wade, Bosh…etc…

The real debate is the talent of that second tier…I am big fan of Lee, while others on here prefer Amare or Boozer…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Apr 5, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

right, it's not worthy of discussion at all

Maybe if we’re talking Carlos Boozer over a SG. Plus, wasn’t an argument to not keep Gordon was that we didn’t need to spend as much resources on a SG alongside Rose?

And really, Taj would be a heckuva backup big, too. Actually, why am I even bothering?

I know the Bulls and fans who agree with chgobr can’t be actually purposely in sync about this, but then again there’s the ‘hard hat lunch pail’ announcing team as a conduit between both, and the conspiracy to make Arn Tellem and Reinsdorf shake hands at the Joe Johnson press conference almost becomes a worthy topic of discussion.

No no please don't pass on free agents - I've waited to long for this.

I do not want us to pass up anyone. I am genuinely confused. Gibson’s development has made an impact. I think Wade is the best fit. Wade apears to want to stay in Miami but maybe there is a ray of light shining on Chicago with the custody conflict he is in. Ozzie after that I want us to get the best player and best fit. Gibson has grown on me. That doesn’t mean we don’t take Bosh, Stodemire or Boozer. It just leans me more to Wade Johnson than before Gibson’s development.

Once again, nobody is saying he’s as good as Bosh or Amare, but if you look at it in terms of needing to strengthen wherever you’re weakest, then your first priority is a shooting guard. youre right, that is narrow minded and naive. but what is even more

narrow minded and naive is applying considerations of fit when they are inappropriate. this team is so far from having the requisite talent for contender-hood that it just needs to think about boosting that as much as possible. to that end it doesnt matter if taj comes off the bench or plows fields in the Urals, nor does it matter if the SG is kirk, james anderson or james lipton. the bulls need studs badly.

Bulls have caught a break (literally, ha!)

I was just going to write this...

If Cleveland beats Toronto, they wrap up homecourt throughout the playoffs…just in time for Lebron to get some rest against the Bulls!

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

He seems like an excellent player. I always have doubts with players that excel on lousy teams.

i hope he steps his D up the next couple years. I would love him with the Bulls, next to Rose.

In other news

Did anyone see Taj’s reaction when Tyrus got dunked on?

by T.Moore on Apr 5, 2010 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

Yes I did - I believe it was the Noah dunk and you could see Taj scream in the background

Taj and Noah care about winning and even though it was sweet to dunk on TT it was sweeter because it meant we were more likely to win.

This all keeps me interested in the rest of the regular season. Thanks Raptors!

I would take him over JJ, but not Wade

I don’t care about the age factor, just who’s better factor.

by Jermal on Apr 5, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Age is not irrelevant

nor is the fact that he’s so injury prone that the Spurs moved him to the bench and sit him at random times, just so he’ll hopefully be able to walk come playoff time.

Neither the age nor injuries are going to get better, and the Bulls won’t be a championship contender next year. He’ll be 33 in july and turning 35 around the time of the 2011-2012 finals. Does he get signed to a big money 5 year contract? Even if you signed him to a 2-3 year contract, his money will still be gone when the contract is up, because Rose and Noah will have signed big extensions.

The Bulls have exactly one chance to do this right, and get the right core for a championship contender around. If they fail, they’re stuck with mediocrity for years to come.

Vinny: "[Thrust] means pace, it means getting the ball out, it means getting your back to the sidelines, it means extending your outlets, it means getting the ball up the court into our early offense with plenty of time."

Taj Bosh

Taj is 24, Bosh is 26

TAJ is OLD for a rookie!!

by rick_ross on Apr 5, 2010 7:13 PM CDT reply actions

he reminds me way more of predator

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I have been trying to convince myself that keeping Hinrich was a good idea

and now I have finally convinced myself. Here is my reasoning (or lack of reasoning): If the Bulls get Bosh or Amare (I would be fine with either of them) than there starting five would look like this…

Rose
Hinrich
Deng
Bosh or Amare
Noah

I would go to war with this team for many years to come. This a championship level team, I think, but it may lack outside shooting. We would have have four starters that are all-stars or are nearly all-stars. Championship teams always have that one guy that doesn’t belong in the starting line-up like a Derrick Fisher type (Hinrich reminds of that).

Hinrich’s contract only has two more years left once this year finishes out. It is also a decreasing deal, which makes it more valuable. The key would be for the Bulls to deal Hinrich’s expiring during the trade deadline of February 2012. The Rockets dealt McGrady’s expiring deal for Kevin Martin (I know there were other pieces in the deal including Carl Landry, but still…) Kevin Martin-esque players are always available at the deadline from teams that want to cut salary because they suck and their owner is too much like JR. This would be the way to add that SG that we have always wanted that could hit threes and score at crucial junctures of the game (kind of like Ben Gordon, how did we pass him on draft day?)

If we had traded Hinrich at the deadline for expirings we would have absolutely no wing-depth. Hinrich can at least pass for a starter for the next year or so until we ship his expiring contract for a Kevin Martin-esque player.

Knowing the Bulls we will end up letting the contract expire, so we don’t have to spend anymore money. I am just trying to convince myself that keeping Kirk was a genius move leading up to the deadline of 2012…2010 free-agency is not the end of the shaping of our roster, it is only the beginning.

by LoveForTheGame on Apr 6, 2010 2:49 AM CDT reply actions

and I'll be the first to admit

that I am still pumped after Hinrich’s first offensively efficient game of the season. Kirk has 24 points on only 12 shots, including a couple threes. So that last game might be the sole reason why this post showed up. I would have never thought in a million years I would’ve have written something so insane.

by LoveForTheGame on Apr 6, 2010 2:56 AM CDT up reply actions

The reasoning has run its course...

We can survive with Hinrich on the roster, it’s just not preferable unless we are able to nab a vet SG or swimgman on the cheap. Obviously, this makes everyone think I want Salmons back. Well, we need someone somewhat similar. Childress, Ray Allen, (or, pick a Warrior, any warrior) are possibilities. Ginobli in likely outside our price range.

Bottomline: Hinrich cannot hinder us signing a max free agent and a serviceable SG or swingman and still be valuable. The cost of losing out on improvement because of Hinrich is unforgiveable.

I had to towel

myself off after that post, Hinrich can’t hold us back, getting rid of him makes us better(which it will), I’m all for it, Hinrcih is about to go on one those streaks that raise his offseason value. Then the Bulls won’t capitalize on it during the offseason, and we’re stuck w/ the Scraptain(Scrappy + Crap + Captain) for the 2010-11 season

For those who are dumbasses

I think this thread is the best forum to vent my frustration. I have heard several people (not specifically on this thread but in other places) that are happy because Chris Bosh busted his face and is done for the regular season because it allows for the Bulls to have a higher probability to get into the playoffs.

All I have to say to those people is fuck you. I am an extremely passionate Bulls fan but I will never be happy because an individual has to go through facial reconstruction surgery because it allows my team to have a better chance to go into the playoffs. Don’t be an asshole, this individual has to go through real life hardships and you literally don’t give a fuck because it helps the team you happen to love.

by ERobbin on Apr 8, 2010 12:47 AM CDT reply actions

There's a happy medium here

We’re allowed to rejoice that the bulls have a better chance to get to the playoffs. We never rooted for Bosh to get injured. Since it happened, though, we simply hope we can capitalize on an opportunity to benefit from the situation. But there;s no need to spend petty apologies for Bosh, shit happens to all of us. A broken cheek is tough, but its not a sports accident tragedy. We say we wish the bulls would have beaten up on a healthy raptor team. This is not ideal, but i hardly feel guilty we have a second chance because a millionaire is having surgery on his cheek.
