Gar Forman: No decision on VDN until the weekend
Update: KC says VDN is 'probably fired', and more notably says the Bulls are expected to focus on candidates with previous NBA head-coaching experience.
The Chicago Bulls will not make an announcement on the fate of head coach Vinny Del Negro at least until the weekend, general manager Gar Forman said following the Bulls' first-round series-ending loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night.
The team will have player exit meetings Wednesday and organizational meetings for the next couple of days. No decision will be made until those meetings are concluded and Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf returns from out of town this weekend, Forman said.
Del Negro has one year remaining on a three-year contract and widespread speculation is that he will be relieved of his duties after the deterioration of his working relationship with team management and most recently, an altercation with executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson.
I'd prefer action now since they made the decision 4 months ago, but this is the Bulls, and everything is 'a process'.
*interesting to note that Isaacson floated that bullcrap spin from the Bulls regarding the VDN-Pax incident. Maybe getting a statement from Gar on this so quickly was a reward.

It'll get less attention if they announce it on a weekend
Even though Vinny’s firing has been inevitable all year, it is still an admission of failure by the org. Better to announce it when no one’s paying attention.
I disagree
it’s a big fake show. Everyone knows what’s gonna happen. They’re trying to give the impression that they’re really thinking about it. What’s gonna change between now and Saturday??

Exactly.
It wasn’t a failure to them at all. It was to save them tons of money which is exactly what they did. Maybe it didn’t go as smoothly as they planned but this is exactly a dog and pony show now. They fired him when they hired him. Now if they fire him this weekend it’s to make them look fair and that they debated bring him back.

I agree SoulEater, this firing was pre-ordained from the minute they hired him
as the lowest paid head coach in the league. They let Ben, Tyrus and Fish go in order to free up money for a premier FA next season knowing full well they could not expect to be a player with someone as inexperienced as VDN at the helm. As you said they were dumb like a fox by saving “tons of money” the past 2 years.

JR opinion
Imagine if JR tells Gar and Pax that he will not pay more for another coach. What do you think will happen?
1 – Vinny stays
2- They bring a worst coach than Vinny, if there’s one…
Jannero Pargo = Larry Hughes 2.0
3 - they promote an assitiant with no pay raise

Considering the support Vinny is already getting on the shoving/no verbal endorsement front
Assuming the do fire him, it could actually end up getting more attention letting him hang a few more days when everyone assumes the decision has already been made.
Do you mean the support on this blog?
or just in general?

In the national media
I think it’s a given that Vinny’s fate will receive plenty of attention on this blog, but I wouldn’t exactly call it supportive. ;)
Maybe the FO is hoping no one will pay any attention, and maybe that will happen – but I can see the national media picking it up as yet another example of the FO treating Vinny unfairly. And it kind of is assuming they have decided he’s gone.
If this is the scoop Melissa Issaacson gets for her Vinny-Pax report

The VDN news only matters to the extent
our new coach affects our ability to lure a prime free agent. The difference between a prime free agent and a second-tier one is likely to be far greater than the difference between Coach A or Coach B, especially since coaches can be replaced rather easily.

R.I.P VDN
My mouth dropped in shock back in the summer of 2008, when i learned that the bulls hired him as coach, i remained optimistic and gave him the benefit of the doubt considering that he had ZERO coaching experience he must have really impressed the bulls staff. he was a bonehead at times but atleast we got to the playoffs in back to back seasons and had one of the greatest series in NBA history under his command, not to mention he really knew how to motivate the players, RIP

I think that that was his major virtue
The guy made a lot of mistakes and cost us a ton of games, but, despite facing a lot of problems, he got two times to the playoffs. Ok, it was on a weak eastern conference, but still. Down the road, if he improves in some areas – especially in the offensive end -, I believe he will become a nice coach. I just don’t want him more on the Bulls

Thank God he's not a drill sargent in the military. He'd get everyone killed.
“He let’s you do your own thing” is not a way to build a championship team but it’s a very effective way to get the players not to blow the whistle on your incompetence since they get to coast more with less pressure. Who knows what a knowledgeable teacher and taskmaster could have gotten out of some our more talented players in the past 2 years…you know, someone like Scott Skiles?

Or...
Its a good way to keep a team playing hard for you, even through a late season 10 game losing streak.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
Well considering Kirk's play has declined significantly since Skiles left, I'm gonna throw out this possibility
Perhaps Kirk is the type of player that needs a disciplinarian coach to get on him to get after it. Sure, everyone likes a loose, carefree coach, but that’s not always what you need to get you to play your best. I’m not sure this is the case for Kirk, but it’s something to think about.
Brad Miller is god.
yep
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

As a Bulls fan, it’s always funner to read about speculation. Sure beats reality.
What would be everyones thoughts on bringing Vinny back as an assistant.
I dont know if Vinny would be up for this let alone Paxson but i dont think Vinny has many other options. The players seem to repsect Vinny and they try hard for him in games, but he wouldnt be called upon to do all the play drawings and substitutions durring games. I might get killed for this thought but its just an idea. Also it would let Vinny actually learn some of the coaching techniques by a real NBA coach.
There is no way.
Watching LeBron is like watching a tornado destroy a small town……just freakin awesome!!by Juannieboy on Apr 25, 2010 6:37 PM CDT
I don't see why Vinny would agree to that.
Since he will easily find another head coaching job in the next few years. If he’s fired, he might do something like join Greg Popovich’s bench until the next head coaching job, but there is no way he’d do it for the Bulls.

How about Vinny replace John Paxson
and Paxson returns as a junior almost qualified to be a assistant coach. Maybe Paxson can serve as a scouting assistant. No! that wouldn’t work because he can’t judge talent plus he already personally lost both his #2 and #3 picks in the lottery for basically nothing.
What will become of his #1 pick? If paxson remains, will he pull off the Hat Trick?

There are 41 coaches that started coaching after 1985 and have more than 162 games.
Of those coaches, here are the coaches with winning records that didn’t coach in the NBA in 2009-2010
Danny Ainge
Larry Bird*
Allan Bristow
Doug Collins
Bob Hill
Avery Johnson
Mike Schuler
Rudy Tomjanovich
Jeff Van Gundy
Add in the coaches that might be available that coached last year:
Eddie Jordan
Larry Brown
Byron Scott
Lawrence Frank
Thats the pool of coaches that we’re looking at, assuming they want a coach with a winning record. Otherwise, Bernie Bickerstaff is already on the payroll. Via BasketballReference.

I think VDN did pretty good (not great) considering management swapped...
… Ben Gordon for Jannero Pargo.
… Tyrus Thomas for Hakim Warrick.
… John Salmons for Flip Murray.
And then they added two young players (Acie Law & Joe Alexander) to sit on the bench. Also, there were better options at PF/C in the D-League than Chris Richard when Joakim Noah went down with the foot injury.
The Bulls went 41-41 in 2008-09, and 41-41 in 2009-10.
I disagree with some of his rotations/minutes (especially the sporadic playing time for James Johnson) and some of the play calls, but maybe we’re being too hard on VDN.

You're forgetting the Bulls' failure of trying to get any type of production
from Devin Brown. But yeah, I agree 100%
A lot of people give VDN a lot of shit, mostly because of yfBB, but he’s done a good job being the Bulls coach. I mean, his lineups at the end of the year weren’t that bad. He wasn’t Boylan’ing the whole situation, like having starters who have been hurt “earn” their way back to the starting lineup.
Having him back in Chicago won’t be the worst thing to have happened. There’s always Doug Collins clipping at the org.’s feet.
I think you're underrating the players.
Rose and Noah are obviously awesome. Deng is severely underrated around here, and Gibson was surprisingly good for a lot of the season.
And the East is just horrible, horrible.
And, ’em, yeah, he did have a starter who was hurt have to “earn” his way back into the starting lineup.

its not like these guys are just awesome and are able to win by themselves… plus they did real well in that west coast trip too. wasn’t it like they beat 5 teams above .500 on the road in row, which was never done before or something..
it’s definitely been a crappy season due to injuries and trading guys away for crap. and Vinny’s to blame too, but you cant say that he hasn’t had a positive impact either.
I'm cuckoo for Kukoc!!!
"its not like these guys are just awesome and are able to win by themselves"
I’d say that’s the case.
Brad Miller is god.
I wouldn't say he's done a "good" job. Looking back at his 2 years, he's been adequate.
He promised they’d play defense this season, and they were pretty good as a unit. He promised Rose would get his reps, Derrick has never had to fear losing a starting spot (though he kind of made it a moot point early on).
On the other hand, the guy just shows zero capability of diagramming NBA plays. He’s basically what Larry Bird was to the Pacers, except Rick Carlisle and Mike Brown aren’t on the bench to diagram all the plays for him. Getting guys to play hard is only half the battle.

Adds Arison, when asked what the top Miami selling points are: “Number one, it’s playing with Dwyane Wade. And number two and three, it’s probably that, too.”
Riley can downplay his contribution because his credability screams loud, yet Paxson is an idiot who is out making a bad name for himself, dreaming of processes, afraid to address the media, and quickly establishing non-selling points for joining the chicago bulls with his back-stabbing coach killer treatment of Skiles and Vinny coupled with his chaos back office management with shady figures such as Gar Foreman.
Two years ago hiring a coach with no experience and now saying it was a mistake we want experience now? An 8 year old kid, two years ago, would have had enough wisdom to know Paxson decision two years ago projecting to his present decision now are the indication of either an unstable fool or incompetent idiot?
Some might say it was a good move to save money? well if that is true, then tell me why did this same idiot lose both his recent 3rd and 2nd lottery picks for basically nothing?
Will he perform the “hat trick” with 1st pick D.Rose? If history is any indication, then any 8 year old kid can answer that question for you?

"I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it."
"Go ahead, make my day"
"We boil at different degrees"
"A good man always knows his limitations"
"You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?"
I heart a good exult screed

Amazing but not surprising. Skiles is a difference maker.
If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

What about Sam Mitchell
He won coach of the year a couple years ago with the raptors and they let him go because of an 8-9 start. Wouldn’t he be a good candidate to coach the bulls?
only if he brings Bosh
