SunSentinel's Ira Winderman on Wade

Q: Does the outcome of this series have any influence on Wade’s decision to stay or is it all about what Pat Riley does to improve this team that will determine his fate? — Mickey.
A: Honestly, I think it’s already essentially decided that he’s staying. The new higher cap positions the Heat to give him just about everything he wants. And he likes living in South Florida, a lot. I do think, though, he might pressure management into a few decisions, including one about Michael Beasley’s future.

I wonder if Micky Arison was the one asking the question?

Anyway, I sort of agree, this playoff failure (so far) will probably impact Beasley more than Wade. But it can't do anything but put doubt in Wade's mind, too.

Yeah, he's probably staying

but to say that it’s “decided” already is ridiculous. Even with their cap space, the rest of the roster is complete shit. If they don’t land the guys Wade wants, it wouldn’t really surprise me if he left. Winderman has been denial of the possibility of Wade leaving all year, at one point even citing Wade’s distaste for “cold weather” as a reason he wouldn’t leave Miami. That’s a ridiculous assumption, and it’s grasping at straws. So while I do think he probably stays, I highly doubt it’s set in stone.

Thrusting out of the playoff race, one injury at a time.

NBA players are incredibly fickle about the weather of the cities they play in

which is strange, because they play half the games on the road and basketball’s an indoor sport. You don’t hear the NFL players complaining about weather when free agency, trades or draft status is brought up…

Yea, but what's the average career span of an NFL player?

Most of those guys are just trying to get paid as much as they can before their legs fall off, There’s a lot more longevity in basketball.

If you're reading this signature, there's a good chance you don't like Vinny Del Negro.

by Juiceboxjerry on Apr 22, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

They only play

for the most part, until December.

but some players don’t want to go to Green Bay because they think it’s always freezing. And it actually has snowy, but mild winters cause it’s on a big Lake There’s just a few memorably cold, cold games that makes people think it’s always really cold there.

by KT on Apr 22, 2010 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

How do you know that?

Who is the last player that decided to play somewhere based on the weather?

by JeffD on Apr 22, 2010 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I don't know any NBA players personally, so I guess I can't be absolutely positive

but it’s something that I see written all the time in newspapers and on various websites/blogs. And it’s certainly something that’s been heavily discussed in regards to Wade coming here, and I never hear about it in relation to other sports.

Right, you hear about it

but there is no evidence that it actually happens.

by JeffD on Apr 24, 2010 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Honestly, at this point

it seems more likely that we’d get Lebron than Wade — who thought that was possible a mere 6 months ago?

Yes right now Bosh should have more motivation

And then Lebron, specially if he doesn’t win the title

by JustAnotherFan on Apr 23, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Not too surprised, the only real drama in Miami is what they can actually get in return for Beasley.

They don’t have much else to offer besides future picks, but the sinking ship that is Bryan Colangelo could do a lot worse.

But still, what if they just end up with Boozer and Rudy Gay?

Chalmers + Wade + Gay + Boozer + Beasley doesn’t = conference finalist in my mind. I imagine they’ll at least get one of the Bosh, Stoudamire, LBJ crop, but what if they don’t? Does Wade still stay? and if all those other guys have signed elsewhere, does he have a choice?

If none of those guys sign there, they have to sign somewhere else

And most likely it would be us, therefore we would have no use for Wade anymore, in that hypothetical scenario.

Well, Wade not staying doesn't necessarily mean he comes here

and NYK, Clippers, Nets and Rockets will all be players outside of the Bulls, Heat and Cavs.

no worries

although I really can’t see him leaving the Heat to go anywhere but Chicago, so you’re pretty much right.

Forget about Wade anyway

The three point shooting for our team would be atrocious. Just think about it, and it’s not like we’d have a way to fill that hole. We’d be locked in at 4 of 5 positions for the next 3-4 years at least, with NO shooters. I understand that the best thing to do is to add the best player available, but when there’s so many good players and they’re not separated by all that much, I’d rather fill a different position of need.

Wade and Rose are the same player style wise, Rose isn’t on his level yet, but hopefully he gets there. Obviously I’d prefer Wade over Johnson if management is dead set on a SG, but I’d be thrilled if we could get Bosh and a solid guard that can hit a three. Besides, who knows how many more times Wade can fall down and get back up, he’s turning 29 with a lot of bruises.

Sign Bosh/Amare, Sign Redick or Morrow, Draft a shooting guard of the future

and we can be real nice next year

Morrow's good, but I think he's the wrong Warrior to target.

Azubuike’s the guy I want from that team.

My ideal off-season would be Bosh+Azubuike,

unless trades are made to free up more cap space. We get a super athlete in Azubuike who can play the 2, run the break with Derrick and knock down the three ball at a high rate. A lot of guys have been clamoring for Morrow, who’s a statue, can’t dribble and would immediately be our worse defender. No need to expound on what Bosh brings.

Of course all this is assuming Lebron isn’t coming here. If he is, he’s clearly the first choice.

HoopsHype says he's locked in for next year,

but other site(s) say his 2010-2011 season is an option, though he’s leaning towards staying. I’d try really hard to get him out of GS.

Hasn't he been injured this year?

Maybe he wants to play in Nellie’s system for a year and try to rack up some numbers before becoming a FA the next year.

You're spot on.
Azbuike also acknowledged that the season-ending injury he sustained back in mid-November (torn patellar tendon, left knee) "definitely affected things," as far as becoming a free agent.

Here’s the article. It certainly sounds like he has an option, so HoopsHype is likely wrong.

if it's his option

why not play with rose noah bosh/amare and deng? sign a one year with another option year at similar $3.5mil salary. has to beat playing for the warriors for a year, and the stats are going to curry and ellis (and probably randolph) anyway. plus, mightn’t nellie retire now?

I think Beasley will depart to keep Wade

Beasley is just atrocious on defense. It’s not that he doesn’t have the athleticism to defend. His mind is just so far outside of average defensive skills that he has to be a monster offensive performer to help the team.

The bigger problem is Beasley might be the perfect player to package for Bosh.

I always love the...

…this-guys-sucks-so-let’s-trade-him-and-he’ll-be-worth-a-lot-because-he’s-awesome proposals.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

just to add

Is it just me? Or does anyone think Wade would be a bad fit with Rose…simply cuz they both need the ball to do anything good on the court?

by Belize on Apr 22, 2010 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I've thought that for quite awhile

and if I remember correctly it’s been discussed at length on this very website.

I think Wade is an awful fit next to Rose

For similar reasons, mainly the weakness in outside shooting. However, the two together has the potential to create wide open shots for the other 4 players on the court.

I’d rather spend the money in the frontcourt.

defense would have to double and triple team both..

creating wide open shots for the other 3 players on the court. Im sure he meant 3

by Belize on Apr 22, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

No

I meant 4. Only one player has the ball. In effect, you can’t leave Wade or Rose open anywhere on the court because they are such high level threats to dribble penetrate.
