Cavs 96, Bulls 83

Cavs were in control all game, but with the Bulls hanging around and even getting within 7 at one point it's a bit more encouraging than it could've been.

Total BS

That should have been a close game 1-3 points, but the refs heavily heavily favored the Cavs all game long.
Look at the stats:
Bulls FG 37-87 42.5%
Cavs FG 39-84 46.4%
The Cavs only made 2 more field goals and shot only 4% better.
Derrick Rose took 28 shots and only got 2 free throws that very very rarely every happens in an NBA game.
The Cavs committed 18 turnovers while only got called for 15 personal fouls.
Very very rarely in an NBA game does a team get called for less personal fouls than turnovers they commit. If you commit 18 turnovers somewhere along the line you will commit more than 18 personal fouls.
The Derrick Rose inbound play was garbage, he clearly had 1 foot in, and he got fouled should have been and an 1
The stats show that this game was very very heavily favored by the refs for the Cavs.
Besides that the Cavs only scored 64 points in the last 3 qtrs.
Should have been a 1-3 point game.

by ToroToroToro on Apr 17, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Rose should have had about 36 points on 28 shots. He got fouled shooting at least an additional 4 times

and LeBron CLEARLY goaltended one of his shots with no call. His turnovers also would have been reduced by about 2 or 3 because he was hammered and they didn’t call it and he lost the ball.

Kirk Hinrich sucks. The end.

Rose

was the best player on the court, and the Bulls should consider giving Flip and Hakim minutes over Deng & Heinrich.

And the foul call on Parker's 3 was bull too.

Fuck that Delaney ref. He is one of the WORST offficials.

And yes he made that call on Brad when Shaq elbowed him

by Ozzie Montana on Apr 17, 2010 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

No

I’m saying Rose’s defense on Mo did not matter in this game. Even though Mo scored on Rose easily, it didn’t cost us the game. And I don’t think it’s what absolutely NEEDS to be fixed.

by Stacey_Is_King on Apr 17, 2010 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

In fairness, Kirk was on Mo for the most part

Their was a stretch in the second half where the Bulls played zone and Derrick got caught on Mo as they ran a pick ‘n roll. That is definitely still a major weakness in his overall game, but I don’t think his defense was a problem today for the most part.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 17, 2010 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Kendall's high for saying that....

You can play zone for stretches based on lineups or just switching things up to catch them off guard. The problem with the Bulls defense was (1) giving up second chance points, and (2) the offense turning the ball over, putting more pressure on the defense to get stops.

You fix (1) and (2), you have a much better chance in game 2.

Ugh

Mike Brown pointed out how the Cavs won most of the 50/50 balls. This is the same shit Doc Rivers harps about.

The Bulls just were not fighting hard for loose balls.

However, this isn’t the only reason. Varejao is very good at offensive rebounding. The way he is effective is as inside hair puller. He’s pushing, pulling, grabbing, and generally trying to get himself wrapped around the man boxing him out so he can jump to tap the ball and try to draw a foul on the defender. The Bulls have to put body into Varejao and make him have to climb their back to get those tap outs.

The one play where Varejao got a Noah forearm to the face was a perfect example. I thought Noah was called for the foul. He did hit Varejao. The replay showed what really happened. Noah’s forearm hit Varejao in the face because Varejao was using Noah’s forearm to climb his back. Noah boxed him out so Varejao resorted to his hair pulling tactics.

Classic line .... "out-Noah-ed Noah and out lunch-pail-ed Taj" b/c it was so true today

Derrick doesn’t have the whining thing in him (yet), so I’m hoping Vinny or Brad or someone else will handle the refs…be it thru the press if they have to.

I definitely agree on the point about Lu. After being suspect in the last few games, I thought his defense was very good, but we desperately need offense from him to have any shot at winning a game.

The first half rebounding advantage killed the Bulls

Cavs were +13 in the first half and +5 on the offensive glass. In the 2nd half the Bulls were +1.

I didn’t see any offensive strategy in the first quarter. The Bulls didn’t seem to have any plan to get anyone going. There wasn’t one man that they were looking to build up. It was just move the ball, screen, and shoot when you’re open. That led to mostly jumpshots that we missed. But they were also jumpshots taken when no Bulls were in the paint.

I haven’t seen him play. I don’t know if he can score. But he’s been with us for how long now? Use him at least once, and see if it works. If it doesn’t (see: Devin Brown) then sit him. It’s not a complicated concept.

Devin Brown is terrible

and I’m sure they saw THAT in practice. Yet, they still tried him a couple times in-game, and it failed. Hence, he hardly plays now.

Why not try that with Kurz? Probably should’ve played him in the Nets game instead of going through the playoffs.

by Stacey_Is_King on Apr 17, 2010 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

The Bulls desperately need shot makers. Kurz isn't a great defender, but he gives effort and blocks shots which is Taj's primary

Probably just desperation. It would probably be a disaster, but after watching the Bulls clang shots, I kinda wanna see

someone who can shoot get a chance. The book on Kurz is that he’s a shooter (shot over 43% from 3 in the DLeague and 39.5% for the W’s when he played for them).

It’s a moot point, though, because it’ll never happen.

I’d also like it if Pargo never saw the floor in a Bulls’ uniform again, so maybe that’s why I’m desperate for ANYONE else to get minutes.

by Stacey_Is_King on Apr 17, 2010 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Jesus Christ, man

I’m going to hold my tongue, but allow me to explain this to you.

Alexander, Brown, Kurz are all INACTIVE. A team can have a ROSTER of up to 12 players, and all the other players have to be either on the injury list or the inactive list. The active/inactive list can be can be adjusted before a couple hours before tip-off.

For example, for Game 2, Pargo could be put on the inactive list, and Kurz could take his place on the active list of 12 players who can play that game.

by Stacey_Is_King on Apr 17, 2010 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

The only reason why Kurz was in a suit

was because the team had a full list of 12 players, so the rest had to be inactive. So Kurz COULD play in Game 2. And if we’re midway through Game 2 and Deng/Kurt are stinking it up offensively, I think he should.

by Stacey_Is_King on Apr 17, 2010 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

the list has been set

he cannot play in game 2, 3, 4 or any game in these playoffs.

by NormVanBeer on Apr 17, 2010 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

WRONG - the list that has already been submitted cannot be changed
Each team that qualifies for the NBA Playoffs must submit a list of its players eligible to compete in playoff games on the day following the end of the regular season.

Because there is no Injured List for the NBA Playoffs, each playoff team must designate the 12 players eligible for the playoffs from all of its regular season lists (Active, Injured and Suspended).

A player who is on the Injured, Active or Suspended List at the end of the regular season, but who is not designated for playoff eligibility, need not be waived. He remains on the appropriate regular season list through the NBA Playoffs.

Teams must have at least nine eligible players dressed and able to play in a playoff game. Teams failing to comply are subject to fines.

And my thought process was: Fired!!!! please!!!!!

by TruEChiFaN... on Apr 17, 2010 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to recant my previous complaints about Vinny's rotation today with the sole exception that

Brad should be locked onto Shaq at all times. If Shaq comes in, Brad should be in the game and on him. If Shaq goes out, sit Brad down. He’s the only one on the team that can handle Shaq on D and can make Shaq pay when the Bulls are on O.

I also think that maybe Flip should get more minutes in place of Hinrich, since Kirk played 44 (most on the team) and only scored 8 points on 10 shots. Kirk grabbed 8 boards which is nice, but 3 assists for one of our guards who played 44 minutes is not great and he did zero penetrating. 4 steals and 0 turnovers for Kirk is pretty nice, though.

Kirk Hinrich sucks. The end.

by fundamentallysound on Apr 17, 2010 5:44 PM CDT reply actions

While I agree with your point about Brad

that would basically mean starting Brad and bringing Noah off the bench seeing as Mike Brown is starting Shaq. That would be a heck of a concession to make. You’re basically telling one of your young star players he’s not good enough. Maybe it’s true, but since this series isn’t really winnable it’s probably not worth it. Better off letting Noah battle and do what he can.

This is a GREAT idea…

It’s both realistic, and logical. If VDN were to show the vision to do this, it would almost be enough to convince me that he deserves to be the Bulls coach…almost.

by kingles on Apr 18, 2010 3:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I also think you are not giving Noah enough credit for his basketball smarts. He is one of the more intelligent players

on our team and he’s all about winning. If the coaches show him the tape and say, look Brad did a better job at keeping Shaq out of position and we can’t give up those easy points, that Noah would get that. It’s not his fault Shaq is a gigantic monster who outweighs him by over 100 pounds.

And like Granny said, if you’re that worried about Noah’s ego (an overrated concern because I think he’s a pretty humble guy and just wants to win) then sit Taj. He sucked today.

Now can VDN figure this out? That’s the question…

To be fair, Kirk did take it to the hoop once, got knocked on his ass, and didn’t get a call. A familiar theme for the Bulls in game 1. I agree that Flip should get a few of Kirk’s minutes (and all of Pargo’s) though, 44 is a bit high for anyone not named Derrick Rose.

by kingles on Apr 18, 2010 3:57 AM CDT up reply actions

the Bulls need someone other than Rose, to score at least 20 points

in every game this series. This is a true test for Deng. He is the 2nd leading scorer. He may not be 100%. But he’s playing and the Bulls need him to step up for once. If he doesn’t… can you live with Deng being your 4th or 5th option on offense?

Also, Taj will be exposed in this series. He just isn’t big enough. Hopefully the beating the Bulls are about to take on the interior convinces management that a power forward who can score should be our first priority (Bosh or Stoudemire).

I thought Taj (and our other PF, Warrick) was the reason we lost

Rose played great, Luol did his job against LeBron, Hinrich filled his role, Noah had some tough calls against him and still filled up the stat sheet.

Taj + Warrick combined for 42 minutes, 12 points, 5 points, 0 assists, 0 blocks, 1 steal. There’s no reason why Varejao and Jamison should be outplaying them that badly, especially on the glass.

Maybe if this was 2007

Jamison is old. Their rebounds per 36 this year:

Jamison: 8.3
Varejao: 9.6
Gibson: 10.0

by YaoPau on Apr 17, 2010 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree

i think it goes Varejao>Jamison>>Taj>>>>Warrick. They have a big edge at the 4 position unless we find more minutes for Noah there.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 17, 2010 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Warrick's barely a part of this

I included his name because he played 9 minutes. It’s 9 minutes.

I like Varejao, but the broadcasters were talking about him today like he’s a star, and it’s spread here for some odd reason. He’s a 13 USG% player who doesn’t pass or rebound well. There’s a reason he’s been a bench player most of his career.

Is he better than Taj? Probably. I love his defense. But offensively and on the glass, Taj should post the better numbers. Yet Taj put up 8 and 5 while Varejao put up 8 and 15. Joakim’s got enough to worry about with Shaq inside, the last thing he needs is for Gibson to lose every contested rebound against someone he should be beating.

by YaoPau on Apr 17, 2010 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Except Varejao is a better rebounder than Taj.

Taj’s TRB% = 15.4%, Varejao is at 15.9% for this year and 16.3% for his career.

So yeah, there goes that argument.

As far as Taj being better offensively. . . okay, but Taj still isn’t all that great and the difference isn’t really that great.

Kirk Hinrich sucks. The end.

by fundamentallysound on Apr 18, 2010 1:22 AM CDT up reply actions

You're right

Varejao had better rebounding numbers. That doesn’t mean Taj should get outrebounded by 10, or get that outplayed in general.

It wasn’t that long ago you were claiming Taj was very good on defense, and now you’re agreeing that he’s slightly better offensively than Varejao. Yet Varejao is a LOT better than Taj? Unless Varejao is Garnett on defense, that doesn’t add up.

by YaoPau on Apr 18, 2010 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Hinrich did quite enough. 8 points on 10 shots in 44(!) minutes of PT from your starting SG isn't enough.

He hit the glass and got some steals and didn’t turn it over which balances some of that out, but you still need more scoring production that that.

Kirk Hinrich sucks. The end.

by fundamentallysound on Apr 17, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Kirk shouldn’t ATTEMPT less than 5 3’s in any game the rest of this series

He is truly the only 3pt threat the Bulls have, he MUST let them fly. Well maybe Luol could be a threat, if he’d actually shoot them…

by kingles on Apr 18, 2010 4:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Deng MUST score for the Bulls to make this series competitive.

I believe it was VanGundy who said that the Bulls have the fewest scoring threats of any team in the playoffs. I think the Bucks, and Bobcats may rival them in this area, but it was still a valid observation. The Bulls really only have 2 players who can score on a consistent basis, and if one of them (Deng) doesn’t then all you have is a punchers chance that somebody else has a big game and maybe they steal one. If they want to actually ‘push’ the Cav’s in this series Deng needs to exceed his season average.

Defense can only do so much…

by kingles on Apr 18, 2010 4:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

Cleveland is a good defensive team and their one goal was to stop Rose, he had the ball in his hand so much. 7 is definitely too many, but it’s not quite like having 7 during the regular season. And I think it was pointed out above, but a lot of those TO came off of non calls by the non existant refs who suck balls

Deng Blows

I know this is a popular sentiment on here, but seriously he is awful. 5-15 and having 4 shots blocked is bad enough, but taking the ball to the hole ONLY ONCE and going 40% from the FT line line is inexcusable. Every time Deng takes one of his idiotic 22 footers, Vinny should sit him down. If you want to shoot from that distance, you can take a 3. If you want to take a mid-range jumper, fine. But notice that when Deng slashes to the rack, good things happen. He can score around the rim and he gets fouled a lot. He is just so scared of contact that he won’t do it. On a team without reliable shooting and no inside game, what Deng is doing is ridiculous.

Is there gonna be a replay of the game

by Camry on Apr 17, 2010 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

I did some digging

Free throw rates were low for both teams tonight, however, the Bulls only had three games this year with the same or lower free throw rate. In those games, here is an idea of what their shot distribution looked like

- Game 1: 33 of 90 shots taken inside 10 feet, 18 of 33 converted
- Game 2: 45 of 91 shots taken inside 10 feet, 27 of 45 converted
- Game 3: 51 of 103 shots taken inside 10 feet, 29 of 51 converted
- Tonight: 32 of 87 shots taken inside 10 feet, 14 of 32 converted

I would love to look at other cases of this with other teams, but when the Bulls had low free throw rates, they were also converting well over 50% of their close attempts. Tonight, the Bulls converted well under 50% of their close attempts. Granted, small sample size, but seriously, how did the refs not screw this up badly.

Yet we still made the playoffs.

Goes to show you,……………..That Rose and Noah are beasts…………………..

by I love football! on Apr 18, 2010 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Let's see

East

1) Cavs – Shaq in the post, Williams and Parker are good 3 pt shooters
2) Magic – They are nothing but Dwight and 3pt shooters
3) Atlanta – Horford is a decent post option, Bibby, Johnson, Crawford can shoot threes
4) Celtics – Garnett, Perkins are post options; Pierce and Allen are solid 3pt options
5) Heat – Not much in the low post; they have some 3pt specialists in James Jones and Q Rich, Wright does well too
6) Bucks – Bogut (when he was healthy), Jennings, Salmons and others all shoot well
7) Bobcats – Not much in the low post (Chandler doesn’t count) Augustin, Felton, and Bell shoot 3s pretty well
8) Bulls – No post option, Luol Deng actually has a solid 3pt pct, but he doesn’t take that many, Kirk isn’t terrible

West
1) Lakers – Gasol, Bynum; not much from 3, Farmar is solid and Artest is very average for as many as he takes
2) Mavs – DIRK is both, and Kidd is very solid from the arc
3) Suns – Amare; Nash, Frye, Richardson, Dragic
4) Denver – Nene and Melo; Billups is real good, Afflalo too
5) Utah – Boozer; Williams, Korver, Okur
6) Portland – Aldridge; Webster, Fernandez
7) San An – Duncan; Ginobli
8) Okc – Not much low post; Durant

So we are the worst of the playoff teams by far, although the Bobcats are not great either. Honestly, when we still had Salmons, we are ok in the 3pt shooting department and Deng’s percentage is solid, I’d like to see if it would hold up with more like 5 attempts per game

There are only a handful of teams and players the majority of the country actually cares about. So, people will continue to complain about their YankeesSoxLeBronKobeCrosbyOvechkinBradyManning fetish, and nothing will ever change. ESPN's recap was atrocious.

Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!

ESPN is terrible

When we beat the Celtics and Hinrich had 30 points they didn’t show a single highlight of his or even mention him.

just to clear up one point: kirk was guarding mo williams most of the time, right? and derrick

was largely defending the off-guards?

there is something awesome about Pargo, though.
Seriously. It’s kind of awe inspiring: he WILL shoot. He has no conscience. No remorse. He will shoot – the situation, the opponent, the country. He could be in zero gravity floating in orbit. The dude would be jacking up shots. And missing.

Wade looked really pissed off yesterday

He can take over every game on offense, but he can’t win games with defensive efforts from Michael Beasley.

I think Beasley is traded in a S&T for a star, Wade extends, and Riles shuffles the roster to keep him happy.

The most frustrating part of the game for me was Kirk

Someone needs to tell him that he’s playing the SG position so he needs to actually shoot sometimes. Even if you say he’s playing the PG position virtually, with Rose playing more like a SG, that means that Kirk needs to be aggressive and create for other people.

What he can’t do is pass the ball around the perimeter like a hot potato every time it comes to him. His unwillingness to shoot is a big reason why the offense sucked so much early.

Only two guys were willing to take shots, Rose and Deng. Deng’s shots were all contested long 2 pointers, so that hardly helped. Noah’s free throw jumper wasn’t falling, and it shouldn’t be depended on. Taj got a few open jumpers that he should make, but to me he clearly showed some rookie nerves. Everything he was doing was too rushed and he wasnt even doing the things that he’s been consistent at recently. Add in a couple of bad ref calls, and he was done mentally.

Also, the refs did screw us. Lebron and Shaq were getting superstar calls, while Rose was ignored by the refs as he got pounded while going inside. He needs to lower his shoulder and barrel over his man as part of his pre-shot routine like Lebron. At least things like that force the refs to call something, and they obviously have no problem giving Lebron that call.

Vinny: "[Thrust] means pace, it means getting the ball out, it means getting your back to the sidelines, it means extending your outlets, it means getting the ball up the court into our early offense with plenty of time."

Yeah you're right

I’m usually not one of those guys to blame the refs all the time, especially since we’ve seen MJ get his for years but…. Rose is getting SCREWED. I mean it’s really getting to the point of embarrassment. Either you think the kid is a star or you don’t. I know everyone wants to make Rose out to be of the PG mold like Williams or Rondo, but he’s starting to morph into a transcendent player. I thought ABC’s coverage of Lebron while Rose was out dueling him was unfair too. This kid is doing it all alone.

You’re right about Hinrich too. He needs to shoot better shots as well. taking long 2s as oppose to 3pt shots, is a recipe for destruction. Also I may be the #1 hater of Luol Deng on these boards. I’m getting close to not standing the guy. I don’t want to hear about his defense of Lebron either. He was terrible yesterday. What an overvalued player for his position. 12 and 6 for Deng? Really? From your second leading scorer at that. I’m just tired of his game, his act, and the low expectation threshold from his supporters. He should be so much better of a player than what he is. Plus his game doesn’t fit with Rose. Deng had got to go.

I completely agree

Kirk has to play more aggressively. He gets by his man, and doesn’t continue with his shot. Either a teardrop, or get to the rim and draw contact/ I know he’s not a great leaper, but bigs will make contact.

0 free throw attempts for the SG playing 44 minutes? That;s just flat out stupid. Dribble into someone and get 2 free throws, geezus.

He doesn’t understand how to camp at the 3 point line?

Can't wait to add a free agent.

I have full faith that with normal NBA health, (no disastrous injuries) we will contend for the Finals next year.
