Johnson would be willing to sign for less than the maximum.
JJ seems to know all the right things to say when it comes to impressing Jerry

ha, 'sacrifice'.
But that is interesting, KC Johnson said that Joe Johnson was pretty much a mute when it came to free agency.
But we get some good stuff:
“I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of conversations between players when the season’s over with, whether it’s trying to team up together or seeing what guys have got going, or where they’re looking at,” Johnson said. “I’m sure that’s going to happen, definitely.”
The only thing Johnson can say with certainty is that he does not want to walk into a rebuilding situation resembling what awaited him in Atlanta upon his arrival in 2005, after he signed his first mega-contract and went from the Suns to the Hawks in a sign-and-trade deal that fractured Atlanta’s ownership group.
“I cannot go back. I can’t backtrack,” Johnson said. “With basketball, I’ve been playing the game pretty much my whole life. I could care less where I was at, I’m going to give you the best I’ve got.”
I wonder if he would view leaving the Hawks (a top-4 seed) for the Bulls (possibly out of the playoffs) as backtracking.
I’m not that surprised he isn’t thinking max, he turned down $15m from the Hawks but that had to be because it was only a 4-year deal. Maybe a near-max 5 year deal does it.

thats reads to me as No NY, No NJ. No LAC.
Even though he seems the quietest of the big name FA’s I think he wants to be in a big market for either marketing opportunities or more media recognition. Chicago’s core ( with new coach) is a more attractive option than NY, NJ, or going into West.
I don't think so.
If he paired with LBJ in NY or NJ, that would easily be the story of the entire summer barring Bosh and Wade in Miami. If they win 55+ games right away (even if they don’t win it all this year), they’re toast and kings of all of New York. And unless he falls off a cliff, he’ll never be a scapegoat. If he doesn’t perform the next year in Chicago like he has the past few, the fans will be calling for his head.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
ESPN (Chris Sheridan) with more horrible reporting...
But Johnson went ahead and said it Monday, and given the fact that he turned down a five-year max contract extension from the Atlanta Hawks last summer, that statement ranks as an eyebrow-raiser.
These are why links should be expected in online publishing. It’s just like a footnote. You can’t say something that purports to be factual evidence without backing it up.

he's not even telegenic
so I really don’t get why he’s still around.

It's funny that 4 years, 15 million isn't a max contract....
….but it’s even funnier that a “max” extension from a team with a player under control is six years.

Can we trade Taj Gibson for Josh Smith?
And Noah for Horford?

I'm not so sure I'd make that second trade, makes for an interesting debate though...

I'd do it in a heartbeat
I love Noah, but his edge in rebounding and shotblocking is made up for by the fact that Horford has a pretty decent post game. Plus, Horford has no injury history, while Noah now does.
Brad Miller is god.

Joe Johnson is going to get something near the max.
Too many teams have money, and he is too up on the free agent ladder not to get max offers, especially if guys like Bosh, Amare, Lebron, etc. just re-up with their own team, leaving a lot of desperate teams looking to make a big free agent signing.
He can talk about not taking the max, but he’s going to be taking something near that. He isn’t going to be turning down significant amounts of money to go play somewhere else for a better chance at winning, especially with his own team offering $15 million a year last year in an extension.
I don’t think it’d be bad to have Johnson on the team, but Dirk Nowitzki is the only one of the older free agents that I wouldn’t be hesitant about giving the max to (or Kobe if he opts out). But I’d be scared of giving Yao or Joe Johnson the max.

What's special about Dirk
that doesn’t make him as likely to decline as other players?
Vinny: "[Thrust] means pace, it means getting the ball out, it means getting your back to the sidelines, it means extending your outlets, it means getting the ball up the court into our early offense with plenty of time."
Dirk's a superstar, while Johnson and Yao are not.
I think that superstars have a longer career life than just regular allstar level players. Yao is obviously a horrible risk with his injury history,
In addition, Dirk is largely a jumpshooter, and a 7 foot jumpshooter shouldn’t have too much trouble getting their shot off, and a player’s shot usually doesn’t disappear.
I also feel that Dirk would do more to help us become a contender in the short term, making long term hurt more acceptable. I also think that while Dirk will probably decline, he will still be a productive player at the time when a 5 or 6 year contract runs out. I don’t think the same is necessarily true for Johnson or Yao.

I don't know
if I totally agree with that. When players get older, their shot starts to decline, it just happens. One of the first things to go are their legs. Even one of the best shooters in NBA history, Reggie Miller, his FG% declined each of his last 3 seasons.
You are right, it never disappears totally, but it will get worse. I remember MJ bricking a TON during his last couple of seasons in Washington.
I don’s see how Dirk is exempt, regardless of his height.
