SB NATION Power Rankings had the Bulls 15th ahead of the 19th ranked Bobcats, but...
...had this to say in their summaries.
Bobcats Good thing going: Tyrus Thomas since the trade.
It's only been six games, but Tyrus Thomas has been everything the Charlotte Bobcats hoped and more. He's hitting jump shots, grabbing rebounds, making great passes and playing his usual great (if still a bit highlight-filled) defense. It's amazing what having a coach who gives you a nice, solid role and doesn't play unproven players over you can do for your confidence.
You hear that, Chicago Bulls? You messed up. I seriously can't believe that Larry Brown took only six games to do what the Chicago Bulls couldn't do in four years. Brown understands that Thomas wants to be more than just an energy player. He also understands that Thomas tends to sulk when his minutes are jerked around. So Brown has given Thomas a directive. He's essentially told him, "I'll let you try to do more things on offense, as long as you do what I expect in terms of playing hard and being in the right spot on defense." The Bulls? They said to him, "We'll mess around with your minutes, and you should be a professional anyway." That kind of tough love works with some players, but it was foolish to think it would work with Thomas.
Of course, if Thomas falls off, all bets are off. But I happen to think that a lot of this is sustainable. Maybe he doesn't play this well offensively, but Charlotte has themselves a player that will change games with his athleticism. All it took was Flip Murray and a first-round pick the Bulls may not see anyway. Not bad, Michael Jordan. Not bad at all.
Bulls Good thing going: Overall team defense.
When the Bulls let Ben Gordon walk in free agency last summer, the stated short-term reasons were that their ball movement and improved defense could compensate for Gordon's shot-making ability. The ball movement part has kind of fallen flat, but the defense part has not. The Bulls are the league's eighth-best defense this year and are in the top five in the league in opponents' effective field goal percentage. Their defense has allowed them to compensate for games where they just can't score, which helps explain why they're four games better at the 60-game mark than they were last season. Last year's team had more talent, but this year's team plays much better defense. That, and Derrick Rose, have been the keys all season.
My concern is can their defense hold up now that Noah is questionable and IMHO replacing Tyrus with Warrick and Salmons with Pargo/Murray represents a significant dropoff. The opinions on Thomas seem to mirror what a lot of us Bab posters have been shouting from the rooftops for some time now. Could it be the main reason the light never went on his head while languishing here was because our coaching staff tried teaching him by candlelight instead of just knowing how to turn on the switch?

"a first-round pick the Bulls may not see anyway"
What the hell do you mean by that? The Bulls will have that pick, unless of course they trade it away to another team.
I didn't write this post. It was done by whoever does the power rankings for SBNATION
I think he means they will not be eligible to get the pick until the distant future.

True enough
but they can’t get the pick next season… theoretically, they could end up with the pick in 2016.
Yeah but isn't it good if we don't get the pick until 2016?
Because that means the bobcats have been near the bottom of the league for at least 5 years, meaning we’ll have a higher pick in all likelihood.
Right, I thought it was heavily-protected
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

and I like you as a poster, but I think it might be about time to let this thing go.

The reason I posted this was the commentary was written by someone who does analysis of all NBA teams.
His opinion as an objective outside observer with no axe to grind is the reason I think it carries more weight than if someone like myself had written similar things. The fact that he has come to a similar conclusion that many of us disgrunteled Tyrus defenders here at Bab have been ranting about for so long tells me that we may have been on the right track with our complaints. If his analysis turns out to be correct, than the Bulls will have made a huge mistake in dumping the wrong player, especially a high pick who is only 23.
I’m also well aware that as long as the current coaching staff was calling the shots, he could never get a fair shake in Chicago which to me is an indictment of our management more than Tyrus. I’m sure many are tired of hearing this debate and eventually these posts will fade away (or be deleted by Yfbb), just like the Gordon admirers had to eventually let go (i being one who appreciated his instant offense which compensated for his defensive deficiences).
But some of us still want our day in court for what we conceive as a miscarriage of justice and you have the perfect right not to attend the hearings. I understand why many wish this issue would just go away and and are free to ignore our comments, but I believe his loss remains relevant to some of us diehards at Bab and the jury is still out on how this will impact the team in the future, especially since there is no guarantee they will land a superstar at the PF position next season. Sorry folks, but Taj is not the answer although he is a decent piece coming off the bench.
Regarding his praise of our defense so far this season as our biggest strength. I feel the Bulls still have to prove they can maintain that level with their new additions. I see the trades as having weakened our ability to stop teams consistently and I also believe a large part of the credit for their improvement this year should go to another player many love to hate, Captain Kirk, who has lifted a big burden off Derrick’s shoulders on that end of the court since he’s moved into the starting lineup. Now his offense is another matter but we have nobody better to take his place as management has left the team without a single 3 point threat to create spacing, other than him and Brad, and that ain’t saying much.
Since the trade, I’m concerned the Bulls could just miss the playoffs, although if Noah recovers enough to contribute, they stil should be able to sneak in which is important to the growth of their young core and would make them more attractive for the big push to sign a star in 2010. Being a Bulls fan is like a surfer bum constantly in search of the big wave and just as he spots it and is about to conquer it, he comes crashing down again, but it doesn’t stop him from coming back for more. I just hope the next big wave isn’t a tsunami.

I'm with you 100%, But Ilini15 is right....
We should move on. I hate what we did with the Tyrus and VDN sucks. I’m with you. But as a bulls fan, I’m rooting for the guys we have now and looking toward the summer free agent class. That is where the hope for the franchise is.
One last point: Don’t overlook the fact that it will be a lot easier to fire VDN if they miss the playoffs, so there could be some good to come from that!

I am secretly hoping that the pick
Turns out to be a great draft pick and we get this great player with lots of potential, but then we squander him with poor coaches. Because I would love another 4 years of the TT saga somewhere down the road.
What do you think the JJ pick was for?
He’s TT if TT didn’t have any skills! But otherwise, pretty much the same.
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!
I don't buy the JJ/TT comparisons
They’re both raw forwards but that’s where the similarities end. TT is a much better athlete, while JJ is probably a more skilled player. By that, I mean he’s much more coordinated and therefore has better handles, passing ability, and a more diverse offensive skill set.

This is stupid
The Bulls? They said to him, “We’ll mess around with your minutes, and you should be a professional anyway.” That kind of tough love works with some players, but it was foolish to think it would work with Thomas.
Does the author really expect us to believe he had access to Bulls’ sources and they shared that line of thinking…
Oh, you know what else was stupid…the entire first section of this post about another team’s player…seriously, we liked Tyrus (and BG, Salmons, Thabo, etc), but they are gone…get over it…

This post is extremely short-sighted
Tyrus Thomas is upset that the Bulls didn’t value him as a player. He’s an emotional person (proven time and time again when he was with the Bulls) so of course he’s going to try to stick it to us for the first few games with Charlotte.
Talk to me this time next year and Thomas will still be jacking up 18 footers that have less hope of going in than Richard Simmons having sex with Jessica Alba.
Actually, your post is extremely short-sighted and arrogant
You post indicates you must have some insider info, or some mind reading capabilities. I don’t think Tyrus is trying to “stick it” to the Bull’s in any way, he is actually just getting more playing time and is producing shock just as he was here.
Ah, yes
The old Tyrus-can’t-shoot myth.
2009-10 FG%, shots between 16-23 feet:
Tyrus Thomas: 46%
Derrick Rose: 42%
Kirk Hinrich: 40%
Luol Deng: 39%
Joakim Noah: 38%
Taj Gibson: 35%
Brad Miller: 34%
John Salmons: 34%
Source: hoopdata.com
By the way, all stats are from time with Bulls; Tyrus is actually shooting an unsustainable 53% from the distance since the trade.
But you’re right, his shots have no hope of going in, since we’ve all been told over and over again that anytime Tyrus attempts a non-dunk field goal, it’s a terrible shot. Because he’s so out-of-control and all.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

You can't look at that stat in a vacuum though
Over 90% of TT’s jumpers are assisted, as opposed to say 55.4% for Hinrich or 34.1% for Rose, which implies that TT’s has a higher % of open looks, which leads to a higher fg%. However, it also sort of disproves the theory that TT’s jumpers are out-of-control shots that aren’t in the flow of the offense. I’d be interested to know the fg% from 16-23 solely on assisted shots, or would-be assisted shots. That’d probably give a more accurate measure of the players’ worth as purely a shooter.
Congratulations RIchard Simmons, if I was gay, I sincerely believe a hot chick like Jessica Alba could have me and half the members of the Canal Street Gay Rights Parade in Frisco gladly join the other side without thinking twice or ever looking back

So I’m going to print this in large (as in capital) letters, with the slim hope that even you along with some other slow learners on this site will be able to comprehend it at some primitive level. Here goes, now if you have trouble understanding the words, maybe your special ed teacher can give you a hand.
SINCE JANUARY 20TH AFTER RECOVERING FROM A LONG LAYOFF WITH A BROKEN ARM, TYRUS THOMAS, (yes that dufus who can’t shoot straight, and the same dumbass who leads all power forwards in the entire NBA in blocks and steals per minutes played) HAS NAILED 70 OF HIS LAST 120 ATTEMPTS, WHICH CONVERTS TO A PERCENTAGE ( ask your dad if you don’t understand what that means) OF 58.3%. It seems all is not well in Charlotte
Charlotte Bobcats captain Gerald Wallace sees the season slipping away, and that’s about more than losing five of six or getting thumped Wednesday by the Boston Celtics.
It’s about body language and tattered communication and selfishness. It’s about no longer recognizing that Bobcats squad that won nine of 10 in January.
“That was a team,‘’ Wallace said of the Bobcats’ former incarnation, following a 104-80 loss. "This one is just guys out on their own as individuals. Not talking, not communicating on defense.’’
Hmm, I wonder what has changed about that team???
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
flagged for implying that Tyrus has anything to do with their struggles
If you watched them play, while winning, and now while struggling, you’ll notice the difference is Jackson. If you think Tyrus is moody, Jackson one-ups him. Jackson plays like he has a chip on his shoulder, especially when he’s matched up with an NBA player that’s better than him. It’s not good for their team.
Tyrus’s points have come more off hustling and rebounding. The offense doesn’t run through him at all. He’s asked to simply play good defense and hit the boards, which he has been doing.
Except jacksons better than tyrus.
And teams can sometimes afford to have one moody player on a team. When you add another, sometimes that pushes things over the edge. I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that maybe TT is causing chemistry problems for them. Not that I think bad chemistry has that much do with on-court play. I just think it’s very plausible that tyrus is a guy who can rub people the wrong way.
I didn't know Thomas had been moody in Charlotte.
There's exactly where you're wrong.
You’re ASSUMING Tyrus is rubbing people the wrong way. Yet you don’t think people rubbed him the wrong way when he was in Chicago.
I’m not even close to where Tyrusmancrusher sits on the side of Tyrus love, but I’m not going to accept ‘media reports’ that the organization has all control over (so it seems) that Tyrus was the only person in the wrong.
There are absolutely zero indications that Tyrus has done anything wrong in Charlotte. He’s not stealing anyone’s minutes (that shouldn’t be on the floor anyway), he’s not taking anyone’s shots and he’s doing a lot of dirty work for the team. He’s not pouting and he’s not ‘waiting’ to be jerked around so he can go out and do those things. He’s allowed to play; not worry about being yanked or worry about being perfect.
I'm not assuming anything
All I’m saying is that it’s not that big of a stretch to think that wallace’s quote might have been partially referring to tyrus.
It's also not a stretch to
think he’s more-so referring to Jackson. Especially when Jackson is trying to one-up an All-star on another team because he feels he was more deserving. You can semantically deny applying assumptions in this case, but your conclusion is based on the assumption that Tyrus is rocking the boat. In watching them play (which I don’t know if you have) that doesn’t appear to not be the case at all.
is he denying making an assumption?
I think it’s a bad assumption, but yeah.

You could easily be right
Tyrus might be acting like a model teammate right now. I don’t particularly care either way. I just somewhat doubt that Tyrus Thomas is a saint behind closed doors, given what’s managed to leak out to the press during his days with the bulls.
How do You know this?
The offense doesn’t run through him at all. He’s asked to simply play good defense and hit the boards, which he has been doing.
I mean seriously how do u know!!?!?
Because it's been reported as such
and I watch more than just Bulls games.
Seriously, that’s how I know. There are more newspapers than just the Chicago Tribune.
I also heard that a couple of very tall Bulls players were hitting on some bongs behind closed doors
last year and the skinny one actually said some nasty things to one of his coaches about being incompetent. Thank God, they weren’t exiled for their crimes. Meanwhile, the bulls former bad boy was one of only 4 NBA athletes acknowledged for their outstanding charity work in aiding disadvantaged youth. God knows what else he does behind closed doors.
I am going to assume it was Jackson (and you and Dyonisus2 can assume otherwise)_ who was stirring the pot, just as he did when he was with the Kings. It was mentioned somewhere that he likes being the center of accolades and it didn’t sit well with him that Tyrus was becoming a fan favorite.
It seems Larry Brown is starting to feel the same way since he’s the only player that’s been allowed to stay on the floor for every minute of the 4th quarter since arriving in Charlotte. Doesn’t sound like he would be rewarded in that way if he was destroying team chemistry. Or maybe Brown is getting the urge to split again and is self destructing so management will buy him out again. But this requires making assumptions, which may or may not be true.
But again, rather than trying to play amateur psychiatrist or mind reader maybe these may explain LB’s reliance on Tyrus in crunch time. Sorry I’m going to use stats again so I’ll apologize in advance for those who rely mainly on simple hatred to make their points.

Not bad for a Bulls bench warmer. But I’m not finished.

And the most significant of all
ORtg 105 Drtg 93 a difference of +12 when he’s on the court, and this for a team that’s gone 2 and 5 since he joined them.
Now, I patiently look forward to a REBUTTAL by Diyonisus2 to explain once again why Tyrus is the culprit in their recent slump. Having 3 injured centers may also have played a small part. Oh wait, having an injured 5 shouldn’t have an effect on wins and losses, as evidenced how well the Bulls have performed without Noah the last 3 games. Please Diyonisus, I really do want to hear your counter argument. Only this time can you provide some more concrete evidence?

Sorry I’m going to use stats again so I’ll apologize in advance for those who rely mainly on simple hatred to make their points.

I'm assuming you're replying to me
Look, I don’t hate Tyrus. I just have a hard time believing he’s a great guy and a perfect teammate. Sorry, but I never bought into the theory that the Bulls organization irrationally hated Tyrus Thomas. If anything, organizations usually irrationally put too much stock into their own high draft picks. Regardless of whether or not it was a good basketball decision, it must have taken a lot of swallowing of their pride for the Bulls organization to condone starting Taj Gibson over TT, a move that essentially closed the book on TT’s Bulls’ career. It would seem very counter-intuitive for the Vinny, Paxson, etc. to actively inhibit Tyrus’s development, which is what most people here are suggesting. Based on that, I don’t think it’s that unreasonable to believe that maybe, just maybe, he has some character flaws.
But yeah, I don’t know the full story, and I could be dead wrong. You could be right. Maybe Tyrus does prance around the neighborhood throwing toys and candy to children while galloping along on his unicorn. But some part of me tells me that’s not the case.
Brad Miller is god.
Some part of me tells me Tyrus doesn't run around killing people at night, either.
And how would not starting TT make them swallow their pride? He’s been a project, and basically hasn’t started games for his entire career with the Bulls, even when the other option was Drew Gooden. Yeah, we were playing Drew Gooden over an NBA-quality starting PF. I don’t really understand it either.
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!
Not starting TT in his 4th year was essentially the org saying that, as far as they're concerned, TT has become a bust
And they know how poorly that reflects on them. You’d think that they’d want to give TT every advantage.
Brad Miller is god.
Actually, Poloplaya, I was responding primarily to Dionysus2
who implied the reason the Bobcats have hit the skids is because of the arrival of Tyrus. The stats I presented totally disprove that argument if one looks only at his Ortg and Drtg. I used your comment about not knowing what goes on behind closed doors as an opening to make some of my usual smartass remarks. You weren’t an absolutist so I had no problem with your speculations.
I think Tyrus was doomed before he took his first shot because management decided he was too big a risk to shell out big bucks for someone so inconsistent, especially with their goal to sign a max free agent, likely a forward in 2010. This became obvious to me with their draft picks. There would be no need to get Tyrus lite if they intended to re-sign him knowing they were weak at the 2 position with the departure of Gordon and with Fish likely opting out of his contract.
They didn’t offer him a contract which sent a loud and clear message that his days as a Bull were numbered and his eventual departure was pre-ordained, even if it meant a few more losses. If he had a breakout season this year, it would create another Gordonesque situation and throw a monkey wrench into their future plans. Tyrus knew he was being jacked around and finally blew a fuse because his chances to cash in when he became a free agent would be hindred as long as he was forced to ride the bench. If the Bulls plan succeeds, than the risk will have paid off, but if the top tier stars go somewhere else, the Bulls will have a giant omelet on their faces next year.
