Game Preview #65 - Bulls at Miami Heat
[Thanks to PeteRoc for today's preview. Took last night off, seems like it was a good decision. Sam Smith always warns of the NBA's conspiracy to get the Heat more wins by making them the back-to-back opponent after a team plays Orlando. I wonder who was out last night on South Beach. -ed.]
Mama said there'd be days like this... The Bulls enter the Magic City losers of six straight. I signed up for this preview gig in part because I had tickets for tonight’s game and hoped this would be a hotly contested game between two teams fighting for a playoff berth. I was hoping to provide a bunch of tidbits about the matchup. Now… I don’t care to write much and am dreading the trip to the arena tonight, so I apologize upfront if this preview is worse than crap.
Where do I begin? Well, Joakim Noah is out tonight. Luol Deng is out tonight. And barring a miracle, Derrick Rose may be out tonight as well. Oh, and Pargo still leads the team in shots per minute, bricks per shot, and probably salary paid per brick. To make matters worse (as if it could get worse), tonight's game is the back end of the dreaded back-to-back. For those scoring at home, this will mark the 17th time the Bulls have played said back-to-back, and their record coming into this one is 6 - 10. In fairness, the team lost the first seven, so the back end hasn't been as unkind of late. Besides, it’s not like yesterday’s game against the Magic counted as a sanctioned, professional basketball game.
So enough about tonights game, let’s move on to other news...
Once upon a time, the Heat were 24 – 22, which more or less made them seem like a lock for a playoff spot in the eastern conference. During those good ol’ days, the Heat (a player in the great 2010 cap space race) had dreams of landing King James and pairing him with his sure thing-to-be-resigned buddy Dwyane Wade. Five straight losses later, the talk suddenly turned to the possibility that DWade might actually leave. But then those five straight losses were followed by five straight wins. And then those five straight wins were followed by four straight losses. And somewhere along the way the status quo settled on 2010 or bust. So now the prevailing thought seems to be the Heat will either sign a FA desirable (preferably via sign/trade) and satisfy DWade so that he resigns with what they hope is a title contending team. Or, they won’t sign anyone of significance, thereby prompting DWade to bolt for a contender.
So where does that leave the Bulls? Once upon a time, the roster included names like Ben Gordon (25), John Salmons (29), Tyrus Thomas (22), Joakim Noah (23), Kirk Hinrich (28), Luol Deng (23), and Derrick Rose (20)… average age 24. Sounds like enough pieces that a shrewd GM could leverage to make moves to improve the team hunh? Tonight’s opponent was once in a fairly similar situation coming off an exciting playoff run featuring a new star who had exceeded everyone’s expectations and was only going to get better. So what’s a GM to do with Eddie Jones (32), Lamar Odom (24), Rafer Alston (27), Brian Grant (31), Udonis Haslem (23), Caron Butler (23), and Dwyane Wade (22)… average age 26, who had just finished 42-40 (answer not forthcoming)?
Well…. a FA loss here, a couple trades there, and now the Bulls too find themselves in a 2010 or bust predicament. The fact the team is in serious danger of missing the postseason probably doesn’t help the cause. I mean…if you’re DWade and wanted a shot at the title NEXT YEAR, will the Bulls have enough pieces?
Oh well, I digress… too late to turn back now… gotta stick to the "plan."
Yours truly will be in the building tonight, but I can’t promise I’ll stay ‘til the end. Given Miami is a short trip down from Orlando, I wouldn't be surprised if a few players got their "night out on the town" out of the way last night. My guess is Tootsies was the best way to blow off steam (didn’t want to post a link, but you can probably guess the spot). Also, Scottie Pippen has a residence here in S. Florida and often sits courtside when then Bulls are in town, so maybe the team will be inspired to perform well in front of a Bull great.

Thanks for the catch....
I think I’m so used to calling him Jo or just refering to him as Noah that I haven’t used his first name in a while.

Honestly, JJ is the only really interesting thing to watch in the current situation. He’s actually athletic and plays with effort on defense. With proper coaching he could end up being a useful player (cue laughter).
I should say that Taj played well last night too. He boarded well and showed a post-game when he had a mis-match. Competence!

ROFL!!!
If DRose doesn't play...the Bulls are pretty much an NBDL team. THE NBDL: IT'S FAN-TASTIC!

I signed up for the NJ game preview for the same reason
I don’t even want to go to that game now. Option27 brought something up in the game thread last night which I hadn’t really thought about. Can you remember any team that has had to play without it’s 3 best players? I tried hard but couldn’t think of any. Even Portland hasn’t lost it’s second best player (Aldridge) and that was my first thought. It may help that Beasley is a game time decision but I doubt it will matter. Heat 98 Bulls 79.
Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."
Washington....if you count 1) Arenas 2) Butler and 3) Jamison

You mean this year or last year?
Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."
I think this last game added more circumstantial evidence that Vinny Del Incompetento is hazardous to the development of young players.
With the exceptions of Rose and Taj, Vinny hates to use rookies, preferring veteran experience regardless of what’s taking place on the court. When the bulls went on a 15-1 run with his benchwarmers, he called timeout to bring back the veterans thus seeing the lead go from 19 back to 30. Taj gets burn because he already had skills that would translate into NBA minutes when he got here at the ripe old rookie age of 24. Vinny had to be ordered to have Rose in at crunch time last year by Paxson.
He never trusted Tyrus who immediately developed a brain and became the designated glue guy in crunch time as soon as he arrived in Charlotte by a coach with a reputation for not trusting players without gobs of experience. Tyrus has played every minute in the 4th quarter except for one game where he was taken out only because of foul trouble. Seeing JJ demonstrating raw skill on both ends of the court last night only because Vinny was FORCED TO USE HIM due to attrition, tells me he may be another victim of Vinny’s inability to develop players. Given enough time and being allowed to learn from his mistakes, JJ has shown me he can become a very good NBA player but needs a real coach to refine his talent which has been held back by this clueless mentor.
Acie Law at least knows how to attack the rim, scoring on 4 layups, although he out Pargo’d Pargo, by launching 12 shots in 19 minutes (4-12). Since he hasn’t got an opportuntity to play all year under Brown and now Vinny, who can blame him? I would much prefer to see what he can bring instead of watching Pargo try to pump up his stats on the remote chance another team would be foolish enough to sign him next year.
Warrick again showed he was an upgrade over Tyrus with his (-29) and one lonely rebound in 26 minutes, although he does attack the rim and got to the line 10 times, converting 8, while going 2 for 7 from the floor. Defensively he got shoved around like a rag doll all night.
The bloom is off the rose on Chris Richard leaving nothing but thorns with his 1 bucket, 1 rebound and (-20) in 18 minutes of inaction looking helpless against against both Howard and Gortat. He definitely belongs back in the “D” league and actually makes the White Panther look good in comparison, but then we got a budding superstar, Devin Brown for him. so I can’t complain.
Flip Murray seems overmatched defensively and he had a reputation as being a solid defensive player but with no shot blockers or big bodies up front nobody can look good due to all our injuries and bad trades that have totally backfired. If we wind up failing to sign a max-free agent star next year I could see Rose jumping ship at his first opportunity and the Bulls could then return to relive that glorius decade after the departure of MJ and company. Bulls management will then wind up feeling like a nymphomaniac who just discovered her well endowed boyfriend has herpes and aids.
The Bulls are starting to look like a terminal case with little chance of recovery unless a series of medical miracles quickly heal Joakim, Derrrick and Luol. So if they keep going down the drain, at least I’ll be grateful that the first to the bottom will be Vinny, who seems like a decent guy, but was put in a position beyond his level of competence and now is failing miserably as his experienced chess pieces keep getting taken off the board.

Add Noah to Rose. : (
failing to sign a max-free agent star next year I could see Rose jumping ship at his first opportunity
But at least the Bulls would still have KURT!
We miss you, Tyrus Thomas and Ben Gordon!

I'm going to watch it while fantasizing D Wade playing next to Rose at the 2 next season
while looking for Boozer in the post when the defense is trying to figure out who to double team as they efficiently run their clockwork precision plays under their new coach, Phil Jackson.

I don't think Pargo leads the team in salary per brick
Pargo’s actually a very efficient misser. The problem comes when you want to pay him for scoring.

I went to look at that. Don’t worry, guys: Pargo’s only losing to his matchup by 7 PER points every night. Not so bad. He’s got the PG locked up!

Why didn't the Bulls trade Hinrich for those expirings from Boston?
He shoots well for 4-5 games and that makes up for the fact that he’s sucked for the better part of 3 years now?
I know this has been discussed for about a month now but
It appears as though the Bulls took a look at the bigger picture in every case but Hinrich’s. His defense sure wasn’t carrying the team when Noah went down again.

I should ask the KC mailbag
that’s where truths seem to pop up. I fully expect Sam Smith to say there was no deal for expirings on the table, the Bulls wanted to get rid of him but just couldn’t.

I am so sick of hearing about "trade Hinrich for expirings"
Look how the team is right now. How the fuck bad would we be if we traded for Brian “i think i can shoot threes” Scalabrine.
Why aren't they selling Rose's all star jersey?
We would
still have Salmons and Tyrus, and I’ll take that over Kirk.

or an alternative answer
who cares how bad we are this year? With injuries (and depth) like this, Hinrich doesn’t matter.

The core of this team is Rose, Deng, Noah..
we were going to make/miss the playoffs based off of their performances regardless of the supporting cast. Hinrich is giving the team NOTHING right now, I think the combination of Tony Allen/Flip Murray could give us just about as much as Hinrich/Murray. Plus we would at least have a body in our front court that could hit the occassional shot in Scalabrine which we do not have in Richard. I still think you make the Salmons deal if you make the Hinrich deal because if you’re clearing out a ton of salary you might as well clear out all the salary (not going to “core” players). Instead, we are stuck with the increasingly strong probability of paying the entirety of Hinrich’s contract throughout the next two seasons. Fail.
That being said… I’m not positive they realistically did have an offer on the table for Hinrich, but most accounts I have read seem to suggest that there was.
Kirk thats how
you step up when our best players go down, dropp’n a hefty 6 points on the Magic

That's funny
You would think with basically all of the starters out last night aside from Taj Gibson that Hinrich would toss up something like 20-25 shots. If I were to toss out a guess as to his actual shooting line from last night, I’d guess he was something like 1-5 from the field. Hinrich=Loser

F%ck!!!!
Where the hell is the pride(that any person who plays should have) on this damn bulls team. Every team in the nba thinks the bulls are a joke and finally i am in and will say THE BULLS ARE A FUCKING JOKE!!!!!. Our coach is a retard our players are seriously a bunch of overpayed pussies(except joakim) We are never going to get anywhere with this team the way it is. My biggest fear is that we will not get bosh, wade, boozer etc and we are stuck with this lot for another five years (or some other version of these players) i want players who dont let the opposing gaurd tie his shoelace while setting a play. I want players who when fucking king james walks upto noah, does not look the other way( one looking like he lost his gummy bears the other wondering if he still is in sudan). i used to be the biggest deng supporter but this guy is such a joke. he is the highest payed player and he averages 18. Are you serious? Imagine if this ball club actually signed another average player like gordon. we have two good pieces in noah and rose and what we do with the rest is what makes me go crazy.
The problem with average players who Thurst and over-over achieve is that they become the bulls who lose games they should win, who are never consistent, and who overvalue the intangibles. A team who thinks taking a KG less boston team to seven meaning something
I am not even going to watch tonights game.

Who gets fired first this year?
- Vinny Del Negro
- John Paxson
- Fred Tedeschi (considering half of our team is on the sideline with plantar fasciitis.. more than a coincidence?)
