Around SBN: NFL Week One: Previews and Predictions for all 15 games

Cross posted this to RGM...

Amidst all the bad news we've been hearing, a glimmer of hope. The headline is based on yesterday's NBA Today podcast where Ryen Rusillo mentioned with a lot of certainty that the Bulls were going to get rid of Vinny this summer, and pretty much give our prized FA acquisition the choice of which coach they want to have. I would have put "he predicts" except that 1, he talks to a lot of insiders and 2, he sounded like this was pretty much guaranteed. He also said the Clippers are in position to do the same thing.

He starts to talk about this at the 5:00 mark approximately:

Joe Johnson picking the next coach?

Joe Johnson for GM: It cuts costs!

Thrusting out of the playoff race, one injury at a time.

I dunno, I think this is a good thing

This is a trump card that most other teams (except the Clippers) won’t have, in that they can choose their coach.

the Nets too

or, it’d be nice to have a good coach in place, like D’Antoni. Or even Spoelstra.

But yeah, saying ‘pick your coach’ is a better selling point than ‘VDN is your coach’. Of course, do we really think the FA will be able to get a max contract from ‘dorf, AND tell him to spend significantly on a coach? Maybe if it’s Bosh+Sam Mitchell or something. I don’t see Joe Johnson commanding such respect, unless Arn Tellem really has ’dorf by the sack.

How many coaches will the Bulls be paying next season if VDN goes? I lost track

If it is more than just Vinny’s final year, is it fair to be weary of the thought that Dorf would really pay premium for a coah to appease a max FA (more $$) while still paying one or two ex-coaches to sit at home in their jammies? (more $$$)

All your base are belong to Vinny.

by BCs71 on Mar 11, 2010 10:42 AM CST reply actions

they will only be paying one coach

team option on the 3rd year of VDN’s contract…

skiles’ contract will be over this summer.

Completely free/clean on the coaching end.

All the star players basically pick their coaches anyway

I don’t see what good can come out of the Bulls announcing it to the world like this (Or Ryen Rusillo’s podcast audience). Let’s say the Knicks get Lebron, and after a little while he doesn’t like D’antoni, guess what happens?

I kinda laughed at the Clippers when I heard they were gonna do this, I think it would just make the org look desperate (which they are, or at least should be). I would think a player would be more attracted to a team that had a laid out plan with an established coach that’s already in place, but who the hell knows…

Yeah, Woj's article on Yahoo today is interesting about the Clips

He states the Superstar they hope to lure can not just pick his coach, but also GM now that Dunleavy is toast.

All your base are belong to Vinny.
WTF, VDN, WTF?

The Clipps have

been bad for decades, I don’t if any big time FA wants to play second fiddle to Kobe and the Lakers in LA

well considering

how much of a debacle our last coach hunt was (pringles to collins to vinny), i think putting the decision in your presumably future team leader’s hands will be much better than letting these guys screw the pooch again. in a way this kind of shows these guys admit they suck at making personnel decisions. i like the humility.

They aren't trying to lure a coach though

If the Bears pursue coordinators by saying “We screwed up playcalling in the past, and we had the wrong assistants in place. Come here and you can choose your own assistants, call your own plays. It’s total freedom.” I could see that being a draw. Coaches are supposed to manage and have control.

But to a player, I agree with juiceboxjerry, it seems really bad, almost like the guy who’s trying to get a girl by becoming everything she wants. Gar Forman’s job is to be the General Manager. If he’s admitting he isn’t qualified to find the best coach, saying “Free agents, make this decision for me”, then get him out of his position. I certainly wouldn’t want to work for a boss who screwed up his job so much he wants me to do it for him.

yeah

I have more confidence in letting Carlos Boozer pick a coach than giving the Patented Gar and Pax Process another go.

I agree, this is the sort of thing that can explode in a team's face in a hundred different ways

As a player, I’d look at that and think those guys were a bunch of goofballs who don’t know what they’re doing.

How far does it go? Do you do that for Joe Johnson? What if whomever says they’ll come if we bring back Tim Floyd?

What if they really respect Vinny? I’ve seen stranger shit happen.

by Sports2 on Mar 11, 2010 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, and when you said it can "explode in a team's face in a hundred different ways"

it made me think of another reason this would be bad. Let’s say this player picks a coach and the hire goes horribly wrong, like a Vinny part 2 or something, and everyone knows that you let said player pick the coach. In the event that that happens you’re basically inviting a media massacre, and any failure would be magnified times 1000. Not to mention that it would reflect poorly upon the new guy who would probably already have enough pressure as is.

Letting a player

choose a coach, is like Bosh letting the Raptors’s front office choose his agent.

Hmm so Mike Brown.

I’d rather have the player pick the coach than these asshats.

The Bears had the coaches they were interviewing go to meetings with Cutler.

Metal sharpens metal.

And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan

The Bulls shrink like a dick in cold water.

also

i seriously doubt this is in effect for anyone outside of the big 3 (bosh/wade/lebron)
