Thomas suspended for tonight's game vs. Miami

The Bulls have suspended Tyrus Thomas for tonight's game against Miami.  Classic VDN - play him 15 minutes against a team with all hyper-athletic wing players where he could help us.  Now, against a team with one athletic player, we subtract a player who, if ever given a chance for extended minutes, would be a difference maker.  Someone needs to do some serious reporting detailing this detrimental conduct.  Absent that, Vinny's conduct is significantly more eggregious.  As has been said many times, if you're going to try and move him, why are the Bulls doing everything in their power to devalue him as an asset?  The answer?  In their pathetic quest for high character guys and "accountability", they conveniently forget to develop the talent that's there to win games.  Without Rose and Noah, there would be no hope for this team.  None.

“Chicago Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas has been suspended for one game by the team for conduct detrimental to the team. Thomas will serve his one-game suspension this evening, when the Bulls host the Miami Heat.”

- Ok this is seriously getting anoying now…Is this organisation trying to make it ovious that this guy is getting shipped out. My first impression of this is that Tyrus must of found out he still wasnt starting tonight ( after 99 year old peice of white bread Miller played 40 mins last night) ….FUK paxgardorf!!!!!!!

I don't get it either...

What is behind that? He play way below the minutes he should be getting – specially now and now they do this. I mean – it was not clear what he has done, but he has the right to be pissed. He’s been sabotaged by VDN in a crucial year for his contract. Is that some kind of stupid strategy to negotiate a low extension? I really don’t understand

by JustAnotherFan on Feb 6, 2010 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly

Tyrus is so overrated on this site its ridiculous. He won’t accept his role and floats around the perimeter. How long will it take him to get some sort of post game? Its hard to watch Tyrus because you see his potential as a rebounder and shot blocker but he will never reach it. He’s inconsistent and lets his ego get in the way of some real progress as a PF….. He reminds me of josh smith athletically but for some reason he believes he can handle the ball and shoot like a SF…… He’s a lost cause

dude ur missing the point

Noah in injured and Taj is playing through injury miller is 40 years old playing 40 mins a game….its common sense to play him more minutes now

by rick_ross on Feb 6, 2010 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

he'll

play more minutes when he gets his head out of his ass.

period.

by leeac on Feb 6, 2010 6:12 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

They played Miller 40min. in the 1st game of a back to back..
Against a team he doesn’t matchup with AT ALL. They played him big minutes against the 76ers and he was COMPLETELY ineffective, while Tyrus played short minutes and was VERY effective. From a basketball perspective these decisions MAKE NO SENSE!

by kingles on Feb 6, 2010 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

His head was out of his ass Wednesday. Did it get him more minutes? Didn’t think so..

by kingles on Feb 6, 2010 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

i doubt

playing minutes are doled out based on a “previous night’s performance” basis.

and apparently tyrus’ head was in his ass when he did whatever it was that he did, in disregard for his teammates, who need him tonight.

by leeac on Feb 6, 2010 6:32 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

well

when you run out of things to say, personal attacks are a good fallback.

in seriousness, i don’t think there is a single person on this blog who wants to see tyrus fail.

by leeac on Feb 6, 2010 6:40 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

LOL

just didnt want to waiste my energy replying to such a dumb comment. Tyrus gets Dfensive rebounds, offensive rebounds put backs , ezy dunks, Blocks/ Steals ALL BETTER THAN brad miller.. Ok brad can maybe pull up for 3 once in a blue moon. But think about it the best way to help your team mates is to go out there and (as vdn would say) PLAY! ….Seriously dude Noah is injured now and Gibson isnt exactly our go-to guy. Then u ask “who need him tonight” …UMM the bulls?

by rick_ross on Feb 6, 2010 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

if

you re-read my comment, i said his teammates DO need him tonight.

no sweat.

i’m not a tyrus fan, but i would love to see him play well on a consistent basis and help this team win. at least we can agree on that.

what about "that game"

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Feb 7, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

If that were the case

He would’ve been playing more minutes. He’s been plenty productive in limited time and still got benched for no apparent reason. It seems to be a personal thing, because there is no basketball reason that would make any sense.

i agree with you about tyrus

BUT, we need to win a game here and there and with our other overrated big man out, it’s really bad timing for the team to supsend him tonight. couldn’t they have waited? seriously, the bucks are one game back, have a real man at center, have a real coach, and could easily pass the bulls if the bulls underachieve the rest of the season and/or continue to be undermanned.

by John T. Unger on Feb 6, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

amen.

there’s a big difference between athleticism and talent. thomas has a shitload of athleticism – not so much on the talent. the OP indicates that the bullls have “forgot to develop the talent”, however, i think the bulls have been trying to develop the “talent” that is tyrus thomas for the last 4 years, and the only opposition in this development – is tyrus himself.

it’ll be interesting to see how many people post that this is VDN’s fault for suspending tyrus when he can be playing more minutes with noah injured and miller on his 50 year old legs. how about pointing a few of those fingers back at thomas, who has apparently let his team down by getting himself suspended in a game where his team needs him.

by leeac on Feb 6, 2010 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

In game strategy

Seriously-is it hard to make sure that you throw at least four or five passes around the rim to him every game. Or teach him how to run the baseline to finish on dribble drive penetration and weakside putbscks? Or setting a solid screen and diving hard to the basket? We haven’t seen that for four years and that’s not all on the player.

by Gene Banks on Feb 6, 2010 6:21 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

are you serious?

Throughout his whole Bulls career, hes been given inconsistent minutes. You state that they have been trying to develop TT for the last 4 years? Are you serious? Because he never has been given consistent big minutes for a long period of time. He had a reason to get suspended today too because somebody needed to tell VDN needs to pull his head out of his ass and let him play. The game yesterday could have easily been won if TT played 30 mins and TT knows that.

Also, for those of you who say that Noah and TT are overrated, you could not even be more wrong. With Noah out we have lost many games thus far. And for TT, he make a huge difference in the game. (and it wont show through his stats)

Nothing makes me laugh more, than someone saying Noah is overrated and “we need a real center”. Give me a break.

Well said...

And a rec for that!

by Dionysus2.0 on Feb 6, 2010 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

It is completely the organizations fault

Not at all TT’s fault. He hoists shots because he feels a need to score or else he’ll get benched. He also feels if he makes one or two mistakes he will be benched. This entire organization has not put him in a position to succeed. Last season when he was given consistent minutes, he produced. Heres an example of how flawed your argument is. I do agree he has some “bad” attitude moments but that should not be a reason for why he is benched. Play the kid and reap the rewards.
Heres an example of a player like TT

Josh Smith . He had the same attitude and has the same athleticism that TT has. When he was given a consistent opportunity and got his shit together. He produced and now is beasting.

That was the most straight forward Tyrus post I've seen

So many are either blaming him totally or blaming the org. They both are at fault.

by bigballa10 on Feb 6, 2010 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

And thats what I been saying. Its both of their fault.

by T.Moore on Feb 6, 2010 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

of course it is

and this particular case is an easy place to point it out. i don’t blame tyrus for being frustrated by how he’s been treated, but it doesn’t make it right for him to mouth off or whatever else.

i feel bad for the guy cause i’d’ve loved to see him in a position where he could succeed. but he also needs to take responsibility as well. he’s obviously not making shit any easier on himself.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Feb 6, 2010 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

You have read where one of things Del Negro wants Thomas to do is shoot 15 ft jump shots, right?

I like how people say he needs to listen to the coaches, assuming the coaches are telling him not to shoot. Yet, the coaches are telling him to shoot. This is why people think others are dumb.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

This is all politics

EVERYBODY is starting to question why the Bulls won’t play Tyrus even when the situation DEMANDS it. Garpaxdorf and VDN do not like dealing with this criticism. So by trumping up whatever ‘incident’ may or may not have occured by suspending him, they have a ready made excuse for their unwillingness to play him.

by kingles on Feb 6, 2010 6:13 PM CST reply actions

im thinking he went off in the locker room

which is wrong, but at the same time i dont blame him. With noah gone, he should be seeing the court more, and it doesnt seem the bulls want him to see the court more, its stupid in terms of team play…

Piccolomair
He probably did go off in the lockerroom(or in practice), but those kind of things happen regularly. Sometimes the team will consider it “detrimental”, and sometimes it’s just being “competitive”. It just seems overly convenient for VDN that right after being cross examined for not playing Tyrus more minutes lately, suddenly Tyrus is suspended for bad conduct.

by kingles on Feb 6, 2010 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

The Bulls need a real coach

Skiles had too much of an ego, he basically wanted guys in his image, he basically wasted the development of Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler, Tyrus Thomas and Jamal Crawford. Boylan was a lame duck coach. He didn’t have the time to develop Tyrus Thomas, he had to win INSTANTLY just to stay employed. VDN, again wasting Tyrus Thomas, after he basically sparked our only hot streak this season and passed the torch to Derrick Rose. I hope Derrick Rose is able to reach his potential with this organization, unlike all of the others in the post-Jordan era. He needs a real coach and a real gm though, before its too late.

- I miss Spooneybarger :(

by Mighty Healthy on Feb 6, 2010 7:06 PM CST reply actions

I don't understand this type of rationale

I think it’s ridiculous to cherry pick players that support your argument and ignore the players that don’t. If Noah & Rose are developing just fine with this coaching staff, there’s no reason that Tyrus couldn’t be doing the same unless there is something wrong with him internally. He has all the ability in the world but doesn’t understand how to play winning basketball. Stop trying to make excuses for him. It’s his fault that he’s not a great player.

I’m simply upset about the suspension because it lowers his trade value and the deadline is a couple of weeks away.

by VDNFTL on Feb 6, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

BTW...

If VDN is as “easy-going” and “laid back” as his image dictates, Tyrus had to something extremely fucked up to get suspended.

by VDNFTL on Feb 6, 2010 7:33 PM CST reply actions

VDN speaks

about the Tyrus thing

“It’s unfortunate timing, but in the short run, there’s a responsibility,” coach Vinny Del Negro said. “No one player is bigger than the team, and there’s a responsibility to do things right. … It’s not one person. It’s a group, and you have to be committed to what your role is on the team. You have to be committed to your teammates, your coaches, the organization. That doesn’t go just for Tyrus; it goes for everybody.”

by NormVanBeer on Feb 6, 2010 7:33 PM CST reply actions

Thats just bullshit u know

real reason : Tyrus probably has an ego and whats to play a certain way. Vinny trying to impose his “power” and put TT in his place.

by rick_ross on Feb 6, 2010 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrus Thomas - great assets, no game

The assets look great, but ultimately there is no overall game that has developed. Tyrus can run, jump, and can even hit a mid-range jumper. Every season for the past few, I’ve had high hopes for Tyrus. I keep thinking he is one step away from becoming a dominant forward. Usually these feelings go away by half way through the season, and this year appears to be like the others. A world of talent but he may never put it all together. Is it VDN or Tyrus? I’m leaning towards Tyrus. PROVE ME WRONG TYRUS, PROVE ME WRONG!

by South Jersey Wedding Photographer on Feb 6, 2010 11:22 PM CST reply actions

I’m tired of this. I still think the blame is 50/50. As a player you gotta keep yer cool even when you think yer in an unfair situation. Look at the Nate Robinson situation, another “immature” team first guy who was pretty much shut down by the coach for weeks but kept his head down and now gets minutes and is helping his team. As a player, Tyrus had to just roll with all this and keep his head up, and he tried to. But he’s 23 and god knows when we were all that age we were still hotheaded.

At the same time, it’s obvious that VDN had something personal against him. Something Tyrus did rubbed Vinny the wrong way a long time ago. It got to the point that even when Tyrus was having a positive impact on the game, it wasn’t going to matter to Vinny. He had no trust in Tyrus or desire to play him.

Tyrus should be averaging 14/9 by now consistently. Some of that blame is on him not concentrating on what he does best:alter/block shots, get on in transition, get steals and rebounding. Let your defense dictate your offense, on offense play close to the basket for alley oops/putbacks and the occasional short dribble drive. I still think he’d rather be a SF and it shows a lot.

However as a team, you put your prospects especially a top pick in a position to succeed. Case in point Josh Smith. Another guy similar to Tyrus….a slim PF who has ridiculous athleticism but was raw. Josh used to try to do it all, shot 3s even though he couldn’t hit them, dribbled too much, etc etc. Almost got Woodson fired many times, many ATL fans wanted him to go off to Memphis. However, Woodson never gave up on him and taught him to play within his means. And lo and behold, Smith is having a near All-star type season. A novel thought, a coach that sticks by his player even one as mutinous as Smith and teaches him to be a legit NBA player.

There is no reason that Tyrus couldn’t have the same impact here. When we drafted him, we knew he was raw but we treated him a 4 yr senior that has been playing organized ball since grade school. Sometimes you gotta change the way you teach a player, sometimes you have to alter your approach. Vinny and the Bulls have no way to do so..but in the end a lot is on Tyrus. After 4 years you should know how to minimize your weaknesses and accentuate your best features.

I just want him to be traded because I actually still like Tyrus and think he can productive consistently….it’s going to take a coach that wants to take the time to create dialogue and really want to teach the game.

p.s I still think Vinny is a crummy coach and I think he had a minimum of impact on Derrick and Noah’s improvement. I just don’t see him as a good teacher of basketball.

by tyger1147 on Feb 7, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Who? Me or T Moore?

Another thing that annoys about the Tyrus situation is that Vinny wanted to and encouraged him to float on the perimeter and shoot jumpers. Never once did Vinny mention keeping him around the basket for alley oops and putback and quick drives. Tyrus is actually the best Bull at getting to the FT line even more so than Rose…but VDN has him playing on the outside.

A good coach puts their players in a position to reach max effectiveness and to succeed. Vinny doesn’t do that at all.

I think Beasley has a lot of Tyrus in him

only his problems are on defense more so than offense. He is still immature and inconsistent as well. The Heat at least realize that he’s still better than whatever they have and take the good with the bad. I see the same thing with JR Smith out in Denver. The difference with both of these guys is they still play consistently which allows them to (hopefully) learn from their mistakes. Playing time is not getting jerked around when they actually do play well.
