Game Preview #60 - Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks

[Thanks to Cosmis for today's game preview. Noah is out, and Deng is a gametime decision. Derrick Rose banged knees at the end of Saturday's game, but I believe he's good to go tonight. This is the start of a very tough (if home-laden) stretch of games for the Bulls. -ed.]

Here we are, at the start of both March and one of the season's most important home stands. Four in a row against quality competition. It starts at the Madhouse on Madison tonight versus Atlanta. The Bulls and Hawks have played three previous times this season, coming away with two wins for Atlanta and one for our Bulls. The Hawks did us a bit of a favor by breaking the Bucks win streak in overtime last night, and we're still within hailing distance of both the Hawks and the Celtics.

Star-divide

Most Important Bulls in the World: Derrick Rose (and his knee).

He banged knees near the end of that uninspired loss in Indiana, and should be fine for tonight. The Bulls are going to need the #15 scorer in the NBA healthy, as he's averaging 23.3 points and 6.3 assists in the three games against Atlanta this season. Bibby simply cannot stay in front of Derrick. He's also averaging 24.6 points, 5.6 assists and 4.6 rebounds on 56.3% (81/144) shooting from the field since the All-Star break.

Key to Victory: Stopping Joe Johnson and/or Josh Smith

JJ (possibly the most universally hated Bull to never put on a Bulls uniform) and Josh Smith have been the catalysts for the Hawks season so far, and if they are to do anything this season, it'll be because Joe Johnson and Josh Smith take them there. Kirk Hinrich and Taj Gibson's ability to do anything on these two defensively is beyond important. It's critical. It's...a word beyond important or critical.

Sidenote

This is a the second half of a back-to-back for the Hawks, and they went into OT against the Hawks tonight, so they should be a little tired tomorrow.

haha i liked how you linked the previous three games

GO BULLS! hopefully the hawks play tired today……

No Noah.

I was really liking Chris Richards on this roster and I still don’t understand the release of him. He rebounds and is in good defensive position and that hasn’t been the case all the time with Warrick and Miller. Tonight they could use him. I think the Bulls will struggle on defense tonight once again.

Yeah your right, Chris Richards is a hell of an NBA player,

he has a very very bright future ahead of him. Almost as stupid a move as GarPax trading away future all star Aaron Gray. Man what a couple of franchise altering decisions.

It's not about him being that good or not

It’s pretty obvious from watching this last game that the Bulls are a big short without Noah. At the very least Richards was doing a good job on the boards and defending. You don’t think they could use that right now?

I just hate when people do that

It’s the same reaction people had when some of us made a big deal about filling out the bench with Pargo, Hunter and Gray during the offseason. We all see how that’s working out now. These little moves are just as important as the big ones when your team is average, not going over the tax, and has very little depth.

If he ain't a superstar, he's worthless.

Unless he’s Kirk Hinrich or Taj Gibson. remember that, and you’re good ’round these parts.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

You're absolutely right OznCoop, it was another boneheaded move by management.

But let’s not forget their 2 biggest stinkeroos, letting go of Eddie Curry and the awesome Ben Wallace. No wonder this team flounders at times. Speaking of flounders, is a salmon bigger than a flounder? We let that fish get away as well.

it just feels like everytime we face ATL, it smells like a loss

considering TOR is @HOU which could be a loss for them, and CHA hosts DAL which is prob a loss, and the 9th place Heat are 3 losses behind the Bulls… let them rest, honestly. March is brutal. let them get healthy going into the month. the last two weeks have been very busy. its understandable they could get banged up in a stretch like that. i’m just saying, considering their standing in the… standings, they can afford to maybe rest these guys for a game.

Can we end the season now?

6th seed and Miami out of the playoff spots. That’ll do me.

Chances of Wade leaving if Miami miss the playoffs increases massively in my mind and Wade leaving stops any chance of a Bosh/Wade tandem in Miami, which at the moment is my biggest fear.

I vote JJ to replace him if Deng is out

He needs some playing time to get better.. that’s the easiest way it’ll be to get him used to the pace of the NBA. It worked for Taj, but he played slow anyway.

I think JJ has actually gotten a lot more time than deserved

he’s lucky there isn’t much depth. He’s been so bad, and VDN is rightfully trying to win as many games as he can right now. Taj at least didn’t look overwhelmed when he entered the league, but then again he’s old enough to have been drafted for Vietnam.

This is true

I just think that with extended playing time, he would be able to work it out. Maybe with a real coach to let him fix his own mistakes… he looks like he could be a decent point-forward.

JJ, if drafted by a quality franchise,

would be down in the D-League. He’s the type of kid that needs to be getting minutes, and being that he’s not good enough to log significant minutes at this level, he needs to be sent down.

well they have nobody else to take the minutes

otherwise I agree. I suppose they erred in getting depth sufficient to allow JJ to be in the DLeague, but as of now they can’t send him down.

Oh, I agree completely.

The Bulls need him up here. But by no means is he good enough to be getting minutes up here. He needs a lot of work and can get the minutes and attention he needs down at the D-Leage.

im usually very pro d-league

and anti the bulls usage of it, but i generally reserve that sentiment for 19 and 20 year olds languishing on the bench. jj is 22; i’m not sure how much he would get out of going to the d league and probably being able to just rely on his strength and athleticism to play very well.

by Calogero on Mar 1, 2010 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

I agree he looks lost

Decent numbers in his 73 minutes this month though. Per 36:

14pts, 5.5 rebs, 3 ast, 1.5 stl, 2.5 blk, 2.5 tov, 60.2 TS%. He’s also +25 raw this month. Maybe that doesn’t say he’s worthy of those minutes, but it’s not like he’s been Pargo-bad statswise.

by YaoPau on Mar 1, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

I might argue that JJ’s numbers look a little better due to garbage minute dunks and such recently

by juicewolta on Mar 1, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, hard to argue that

Although I’ll try by saying JJ’s gotten more 2nd and 3rd quarter minutes recently than I’ve seen him get all season.

by YaoPau on Mar 1, 2010 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

JJ also plays better d than offense

He looks tentative out there, but I think with more minutes he would calm down, and not hurt us like Pargo does.

by Basketball Smurf on Mar 1, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

who the hell else?

would replace him?

Warrick? Flip?

Being that JJ is the only one of those three who’s actually a small forward, it’s really not much of a stretch…

gotta compromise

chilled with my girl the other night, had the Bulls game on DVR, so we watched a movie first, hit up a little comic standup, and then she watched the game with me. she just doesn’t like watching on tv too much. she works at a sports bar so she gets enough there, and i’ve at least gotten her to cheer on the Bulls when we go to games. i even gave a her a Brook Lopez jersey for V-day (same last name as her) which she liked. girls can get into sports with their man, but we men gotta give back and watch a chick flick every once in a bit. they ain’t all bad. we’re going to need solid production out of 2/3 of the Miller/Gibson/Warrick combo to compete in this one. I know this is probably the case for every game but after we basically got dominated by the combination of Troy Murphy and Roy Hibbert, it will be important for our front court to bounce back after a day of rest. Unfortunately, it won’t be easy to bounce back against the Horford and Smith duo up front for the Hawks.

We seemed to miss a ton of shot vs Indiana and it seemed like Warrick was doing a good job on the offensive glass so i was surprised he didn’t end up with more minutes in the game. Maybe 1 or 2 more second chance baskets could have sparked the team just enough to steal a win in what was a poor overall effort. What’s done is done.

by juicewolta on Mar 1, 2010 4:26 PM CST reply actions
