Game Preview #58 - Bulls vs Portland Trailblazers

[Thanks to Teri for today's game preview. I'll be at the UC tonite. Oh, and there's a tribute to Norm and Red to look forward to as well -ed.]

Like Yfbb said last night this game will be the first real test for the new-look Chicago Bulls It probably doeesn't help that the Bulls now has a 5 game losing streak against the Blazers, with the last three ending in blowouts. But it might help that the Portland team coming into United Center is a very different one from the last time they met.

Star-divide

Blazers lost both Greg Oden and Pryzbilla to season ending knee injury, and the newly acquired Marcus Camby is listed as day-to-day with a sprained ankle. They traded Outlaw and Steve to Clippers. But they've also gotten Nicolas Batum back from the shoulder injury earlier this season.

Brandon Roy has been back from missing 12 games earlier this month. Though he is still not 100% yet, he is still a major scoring threat on the floor. When Roy was out, it was Andre Miller who took over for the Blazers when needed and he has been very success ful and efficient for the Blazers. Juwan Howard, who would start if Camby is still out tomorrow night has held his own protecting the paint with his veteran craftiness. LaMarcus Aldridge has been inconsistent and even sometimes disappointing for the Blazers since signing a contract last summer. He is still mostly a midrange shooter, rarely posting up and rebounding is inconsistent with last night grabbing only 2 rebounds despite playing almost 40 minutes against a Bosh-less Raptors team. Batum is the energetic defensive specialist who hustles and the first running back on the open floor.

The bench: Rudy Fernandez is a shell of his former self after returning from an injury. Jumpshots haven't been falling which leads to him being hesitant and passing up shots. There's reports of him being frustrated at his role on the team. Martell Webster and rookie Cunningham took over the role of Outlaw as the scoring counterpart to Batum, and Jerryd Bayless getting more minutes and improving since Blake was traded.

In my opinion, the key to this game is the boards. The Blazers is a team that thrives on offensive rebounds and second shot chances. But with Noah still obviously hobbled and should play as little as possible or completely shut down for the time being, the Bulls needs not only the bigs, but everyone to help the rebounds. Another key would be to run the floor, push the tempo instead of settling for the slow pace of the Blazers.

Swing by the enemy's territory Blazersedge for some good, clean, no swearing fun.

Yeah I truly just dislike that organization and their fans.

Not because of any jealously like they want people to believe but because they’re so damn annoying and arrogant. They think they are on the cuffs of a Championship and they’re not. Not only that when I watch the games their fans never stop cheering and they will cheer for like dumb shit like a player tying his shoe. Stop cheering it’s way over done. Why do you have to cheer the whole damn game, it’s really annoying. Maybe the 6 titles has spoiled me though.

I sound like a dick but seriously that team reminds me of like the Cavs of the 1980’s. Nice little team that will shit it’s pants and fall apart. Passed on MJ, Passed on Durrant and they come here talking about Aldridge? Who the fuck cares man! We fucked u in 92 bitch!

Whats wrong with cheering the whole game? They do it in the NCAA all the time.

And college basketball is more physical than the NBA. Seriously they play better defense in college than the NBA now and thats sad.

They don't do anything better on the court in college compared to the NBA.

Well its hard to do anything on D

When the Refs in the NBA never allow players to handcheck or touch anybody on defense or camp out on the paint anymore making it easy for guys Parker, Wade and other guys who usually get most of their points inside.

I’m not a big NCAA fan but they play more physical on D than the NBA now.

by T.Moore on Feb 26, 2010 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Well ask for

a rule change, the refs are only calling whats in the rule book except for traveling and 3 seconds.

by QUINTEN DALEY on Feb 26, 2010 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

Yet its messed up.

That they changed the rules to help the offense and handicap the D back in 98 I think. I don’t they will listen to me. lol

by T.Moore on Feb 26, 2010 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

Is there handchecking in the NCAA?

Also, I’m not a fan of zone, so watching a 2 hour game where both teams are exclusively employing it is pretty annoying.

I’ll agree that the play is more physical, but I don’t think that necessarily means the game is better, or more entertaining.

NCAA It's not as entertaining and its not better.

That said both teams play on equal ground. The players are allowed to play D and the O have to anything they can to get around the D. I don’t watch the NCAA much but I catch a game every now and then. And while it can get boring (mostly because of blowouts) they show great quality team ball. The NBA now focus more into the entertainment and hype more than the actual game these days. I mean its nice to see highlight reel dunks and I am entertained since (there aren’t as many blowouts) but still it would be nice for the D to have as many chances to stop a guy as the offense have to score on you.

As for the Refs they are the worse in sports callng a foul on a player running into his teamate. But it is funny though Worst Foul Call Ever.

I sense a little bitterness about the fact the Blazers got Aldridge and Bulls got Tyrus Thomas.

But anyway, this game will be a lot more competitive than the previous 3 because in those games Portland was just able to physically pound the Bulls, particularly with Greg’s dominance of Noah. However, Juwan Howard is like 80 and isnt a center, so Joakim can get rest easy tonight.

To be fair

We did take aldridge, you are lucky that we decided to give him to you because our gm decided that he wanted to take a risk for the first time in the draft….

also you shouldve taken jordan, and durant, and if your organization was able to trade aldridge for bosh or amare, they would have already…i dont care how good you think aldridge is, Amare and bosh are so far ahead of him its not even funny….

At a much higher pace

Look, I agree that Amare is a slightly better player right now but I was more speaking in terms of Portland trading for him. LMA does more things that the Blazers need than Amare would. For one he actually tries on the defensive end and is actually effective defensively.

all im saying is

theres no way aldridge gurantees u amare or bosh in a trade…aldridge is a good player, he has a good reputation in the league, but i dont think his value is as high as you are making it out to be…

No

I definetely don’t think that LMA would net either of those guys in a trade unless there was some other pieces involved. I just don’t think that the Blazers would want Amare. They would definetely take Bosh if they could get him though.

Pretty good preview

If it turns into a running game, that might actually help Portland, though they don’t seem to have figured that out, yet.

Fernandez had a big game at Toronto. All of our bench players have been inconsistent. You’ll have to watch for someone unexpected having a big game. We have guys like Fernandez or Webster or Batum or Bayless blow up one night and disappear the next. The result is that we win games no one should expect us to win (twice at Dallas, for instance) and lose games we shouldn’t (at home against Philly, at Washington and NY).

No way to know which team will show up in Chicago tonight.

Give Blake the MLE in 2010!

Correction:

Juwan Howard, who would start if Camby is still out tomorrow night has held his own protecting the paint made Portland’s interior defense look like swiss cheese with his veteran craftiness.

I love what Howard has brought to the starting center position for being our third string PF at the beginning of the season, but the paint has been awful for us since losing all of our real centers to injury.

Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.

Wrong
LaMarcus Aldridge has been inconsistent and even sometimes disappointing for the Blazers since signing a max contract last summer.

For one, LMA did not sign a max contract this summer. It was 5yrs/$65 million.

Also, LMA has been the most consistent Blazer in a year filled with injuries. Yeah he hasn’t improved that much statistically from last year. But for being jerked around in his roles all year I think he has performed admirably. It is true that LMA is not yet the superstar that some Blazer fans think him to be but without him the Blazers wouldn’t even be thinking about the playoffs

by Teri on Feb 26, 2010 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

Well, when the year started he was playing the stretch 4 position while trying to integrate Oden into the offense and getting his touches reduced. When Oden went down he was asked to pick up the low post scoring that Oden has been providing while trying to work with Przybilla being in the low post at the same time. Also he was forced to help pick up some of the low post defense and rebounding slack when Przybilla was on the bench. Needless to say, this didn’t work out so well. Then when Przybilla went down with injury, LMA was basically the only skilled big man that the Blazers have left. Juwan Howard has performed admirably at the starting center posistion but due to his lack of size and athleticism he is a giant liability on defense. Lately we have seen LMA making a concerted effort to work the ball in the low post but he still needs a lot of work on his post-up game. Meanwhile he is still averaging 17.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and 2.0 apg.

by lrh86 on Feb 26, 2010 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

Also...

… I can see why you would think he has been inconsistent this year because of that last game against the Raptors but that was due to the combined factors of the matchup with Bargnani and just a bad game from LMA. Bargnani spends all his time out on the perimeter which explains the lack of rebounds for LMA and also Bargs in one of the few PF/C’s that have the length and quickness to bother LMA’s shot.

by lrh86 on Feb 26, 2010 11:30 AM CST up reply actions

The only thing he's consistent at is insisting on spot up jumpers instead of going in the paint.

There’s too many nights where he produces in the first half and just disappears in the 4th. or games where he’s playing great, and the next just plain can’t shoot. Despite given more offensive responsibilities, he still only averages 17 ppg, and it’s not like they don’t run plays for him.

Yeah, he is a jump shooter...

… but that is exactly what the Blazers need to match with Oden. He is never going to be a dominating low post player. He doesn’t have the body type or the strength to deal with the bigger centers and power forwards in the league but he can wreak havoc on a defense by drawing opposing forwards and centers out of the lane by knocking down the mid range shots. I just wish he would step out behind the line when he is shooting to increase his effectiveness. If he mixes in a little post offense here and there it is just icing on the cake. One more thing, he has the speed and athleticism that only a few power forwards can match on the fast break. Now if only the Blazers would run once in a while which is a whole other topic that I don’t want to get into.

by lrh86 on Feb 26, 2010 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

i disagree...

aldridge has the frame to put on muscle if he chooses that route. with added mass, he can bang in the paint, move people around under the basket, and go for rebounds. plus, the additional rebounds would equate to additional easy putbacks. he’s a good short to midrange jump shooter, so if that’s his game, so be it, but he’s got the potential for much more. aldridge needs to keep improving, because jump shooting, marginally rebounding power forwards look good in the box scoring, but are not going to take the blazers to the top tier – especially if you’re counting on oden as the defensive anchor.

as for tyrus/ lamarcus, it’s all water under the bridge as far as i’m concerned. we would have traded tyrus back to you for some expirings.

"The people we lost, I'm sad we lost them because they helped us. But the organization saw something in these players. They're going to help us. They don't have any attitude problems. They just want to ball." - Derrick Rose

by leeac on Feb 26, 2010 1:43 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t want to get into the whole injury prone argument but with Oden as a dominating defensive presence, while providing them with some easy baskets in the paint off of offensive rebounds and dunks, the Blazers don’t need another player in the post.

by lrh86 on Feb 26, 2010 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

If Bulls front office gauged character before going into the draft...

you wouldn’t have been stuck with such a sour puss like TT. LMA will never be a superstar – but he’ll definitely fit into the equation of complementing a low post presence at center if/when Portland ever gets one healthy.

GIbson started

because Thomas broke his arm. You aren’t supposed to lose your starting job to injury, unless the other guy is Tom Brady, and you’re Drew Bledsoe.

Taj Gibson has had a very nice year and definitely seems to be a solid NBA player, but Tom Brady he is not.

I like the posts, adds some flavor and spice to the game tonight. Makes it a bit for fun to watch, knowing that some passionate people are on the other side caring as much about the win.

Good preview for tonight… seemed a bit negative towards Blazers, and I’m surprised some BEdgers didn’t jump all over it. I guess that means BEdgers are generally as pessimistic about their own team as Blob-a-Bullers?

A lot of people feel he should get a pass on this year due to the injuries

Many others, like me, think he needs to go. Annoyingly simplistic offense, switching every pick and roll on D, jerking people around with their rotations, not getting the most out of e.g. Batum and Fernandez.

He’s not a terrible coach, and his demeanor and leadership after all the injuries was a factor in the Blazers staying afloat, I think, but I can’t see him ever coaching a championship team.

“It’s” is always the abbreviation of “it is” as in “It’s (= it is) a nice day, isn’t it?” “Its” is the possessive of “it” as in, “That is Morton’s puppy but I don’t know its name.” In the second sentence, “its” means “belonging to it”.

Oden has one huge problem and one other problem

If he stays healthy, gets his foul trouble under control and plays at the level he was this year (or higher), he’s an allstar.

If not, then the Blazers as currently constructed are screwed.

isn't he too slow?

He runs like an old man

but he’s plenty fast enough for his position.

yeah

I’d say his quickness is only average for a huge dude.

Can you say Brendon Haywood?

I thought there was going to be a joke about his penis pictures

and was curious if you defined that as the huge problem or the other problem

According to K.C. Johnson @KCJHoop: “Deng’s left knee got worse overnight. Testing it now but no longer sure of playing.”

Joking aside, I really do like the Blazers

Of course i’m pulling for the Bulls in this one, but they are probably my favorite WC team. I’m a season ticket holder, but I wont be at this one unfortunatley (my dad is going with his buddy). Anyway, something I really admire about the Blazers, aside from the fact that they are a good team, is your fanbase. I don’t get a chance to see a ton of your home games, but when I do the fans are always really loud and into. I know it’s like that for us as well with our rediculous sell out streak. I think of Chicago, Portland, Lakers, Oaklahoma City, and if you count sold out but pissed off crowds, New York. Beyond that…there really arent that many true fans in the NBA anymore. Sad.

I've been to the United Center a few times

Its a fun place.

I love Chicago, I’m there all the time, and especially love Grant/Millennium Park.

I also become a Bears fan for life after seeing my first game at the New Solider Field the year they went to the Superbowl. Love fan support like that.

We like to go over to other teams to get different perspective. and ofcourse do things we arent supposed on our own blog

I’m argumentative and active and have been warned…. you really have to cross a line or disregard warnings to get banned from BE. I’ve met Dave and he’s more of the chess club geek then he is sissy.

More sissies with regard to their overly strict policy on comments. I live by the rules now, but I recently had a post taken down that was seriously not bad at all.

Sheesh

Both teams we’re lucky enough to land the #1 overall picks with Rose and Oden
Both teams passed up stars with Roy and Durant
Both teams have a lot of young talent
Both GM’s overvalue that talent
