"He said, 'Hey, you guarded LeBron (James), and he did all of that, and he went nowhere,'" Thomas recalled of Brown's instruction Monday morning. "'A guy as quick as you are, just trust me: I'm going to teach you how to take one or two dribbles like Mike (Michael Jordan) did and get where you want to go. You have the ability to jump over people and shoot your shot.'"

I worry that Ty's newfound ability to 'listen' will be short-lived, especially...

if his minutes are reduced when Nazr and Chandler return.

But I do also think that one of the key factors in the Tyrus-VDN relationship is that Tyrus just didn’t respect Vinny as a legit NBA coach. He won’t have that excuse with Brown.

I agree

Larry Brown has generally made Scott Skiles look pretty tame.

by Sports2 on Feb 25, 2010 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

I think Tyrus even made comments that hinted at this. Reporters asked him about his relationship with Skiles

and he said a lot of people have the perception that he didn’t like Skiles because he was tough and expected a lot, but Tyrus said he loved that. Tyrus is the type that NEEDS actual coaching, not Vinny’s “roll the ball out” style, where all he does is shout cliches.

We hear the talk about his fit, intangibles, ‘glue guy’, ‘thrust’, and any other ways you can put lipstick on a sub-40% shooting pig, but it’s become increasingly clear that it can’t be just propaganda when the moves they make (or don’t) say that they believe their own hype.

Now I have a reason to buy NBA League pass again.

To watch all my favorite ex-Bulls. Then when the Bulls play I can go back to watching Luol Deng and Kirk Hinirch.

I was a Tyrus defender as well, but it wasn't hard to see

that he was oftentimes doing disastrous things while also doing great things. He’s frustrating to watch, but he’s still a good player who we should have kept around and played more minutes.

He is putting up numbers

but he doesn’t seem to be helping their playoff chances. Bull erred in not developing him. However its hard to argue they erred in letting him go. At least it thats what the early results are saying (might change when Bulls start facing real oponenets).

by silentpete on Feb 25, 2010 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

TT has put up a lot of positive +- and good stats

that said, the error in limited plus-minus is ridiculously large. So.
It’s basically the rest of the team that is crapping out, though. Jackson and Wallace are playing like 48 minutes a game, and they don’t really have a center – not exactly a recipe for success.
I don’t think the Bulls erred in letting him go, but that’s just because they weren’t going to resign him anyways. Bulls aren’t winning a title [or, likely, getting out of the first round] this year.

Jackson is 6 for 32 his last 2 games.

Some say he’s pouting because Tyrus is becoming a new fan favorite and he resents it. Diaw has also nosedived, probably because he has Thomas breathing over this shoulder and cutting into his playing time. Sometimes the pot gets stirred and the results aren’t always positive.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

Well, they played well today

By ‘some’ you mean one guy. :P
The Bobcats are a really mercurial team, mainly because they don’t have any guards, and Stephen Jackson can be … not so great, sometimes.

Doesn't matter that it's Larry Brown

It’s only been 2 weeks and I’m already sick of hearing about Tyrus. Tyrus had tuned out Vinny (and vice versa) so he wasn’t going to do any better here. Given that it was clear he wasn’t in the team’s plans, he became complacent (i.e., he wasn’t about to change his ways), even with the availability of an extension looming. He probably probably saw the trade as a wake up call to stop playing around and get serious.

It doesn’t matter that it’s Larry Brown. Sometimes it takes a change if scenery for a player to “get it.” Anyone with sense would see this as a time to listen to the coach and play your heart out to get those extension dollars. This is the perfect opportunity to rehabilitate your image. Anything less than this and we’d all be talking about what an idiot Tyrus is for failing to capitalize on this fresh start. So, I wouldn’t use his recent play as an indictment of Vinny. If anything, it’s Tyrus just making the decision to do what the coach wants (and not just TyrusBall).

We all know what Tyrus is capable of doing. The only issue is his ability to sustain it and improve. As I’ve written before, some of that is on the coach and team, but the player has to shoulder considerable responsibility, too. No way was Vinny telling Tyrus to launch 20 footers in transition. Didn’t matter: Tyrus spent his summer shooting and he wanted to showcase his range in inopportune moments. If he stops making bad plays now, that’s hardly a reflection on Vinny as Tyrus has known all along what he should be doing. The guy was a highly talented bozo here. Keeping him on the Bulls was like throwing good money after bad. Cut your losses and move on (Kenny Rogers, holla if ya hear me).

The comments made by the Bulls post-trade really stick out to me. If you listen to Deng and Rose and others, everyone says the SAME THING about the trade: the new guys are very professional and that it was a great trade. Unless the outgoing guys were not professional, why even comment on the new guys’ professionalism? You don’t hear any of them saying that they miss Tyrus, or that they need to make up for his athleticism. I know that nobody is going to hang Tyrus out to dry in an interview, but even when Noce left, the players were like “we’ll miss his toughness.” I’m sure Tyrus made the players crazy, too.

Bottom line is that we should all wish Tyrus well and let it go. I have a feeling that his “student of the game” persona will be short-lived and we’ll soon see what we saw in Chicago (just with less yelling at the coach).
