Short-term pain for the long-term gain - Tyrus/Salmons
It was painful watching Tyrus last night. He was pumped and was jumping like a pogo stick blocking shots and impacting the game. He became an instant Charlotte fan favorite. I wish we could have seen him develop or not develop here. I also like Salmons and despite many deriding comments about the Fish he was a solid contributor for us. He had a big game last night hitting the key 3 to get Milwaukee the win. Despite the Bulls win last night Tyrus and Salmons not being here pained me.
HOWEVER, let's not lose our perspective. If we did not trade both Salmons and Tyrus we would have lost them for nothing. At least we get a 1st rounder from Charlotte and a look at Warrick for two months. Not making these moves could have jeopardized the opportunity to get a FA and resulted in losing them for nothing.
Make no mistake it does pain me that we have lost the hope that we had a diamond in the ruff with Tyrus. I feel different about Tyrus than I did about Ben Gordon leaving. Despite loving Ben's contributions I thought his contract would be an albatross undermining our future. As of now, the outcome data supports the ORG made the right decision about Gordon. I just posted Gordon's contribution to the Pistons-Milwaukee game and Detroit's regret to the signing via the SB Nation Detroit blog. At least with Gordon it appears the short-term pain is going to be exceeded by the long-term gain. I am hopeful we will feel the same about the Tyrus/Salmons deals. Unfortunately we are are in the short-term pain phase. We need to wait until the summer to begin to assess the long-term fun piece.

I hope more people realize
that sometimes moves like this have to be made. Talented but inconsistent was more than just Tyrus Thomas, it was the entire team’s MO for the last how many years…it’s grown stale to watch as a fan. IF and again IF this leads to our team being better in the long run, with no large contracts weighing us down, and keeping talented guys to go along with our better players (ROSE, Noah, Deng). I mean it’s not like we gave up Wayne Gretzky, we’re not the Edmonton Oilers. Keep perspective.

The Bulls did have a vision and now implemented the plan to realize the plan. The question is will it work.
The ORG has had a vision to get under the cap and build just as you state above around Rose Noah and Deng. It may or may not work out but it is a very reasonable plan and to the ORGs credit they have kept to the plan. There have been many posts about the ORGs lack of vision. There was a vision and the plan for the vision is now in place. You have to give the Bulls credit for putting us in this position.
I do not agree with Walsh’s throwing all chips in hoping for two home runs this summer. However, he has taken the heat and kept to his plan which I admire. He had a plan and despite enormous criticism kept to it. The same holds for the Bulls management. I just happen to like the Bulls plan of using both the draft and taking some risk on one free agent better than the Knicks’ plan that risks mortgaging the future.
I do agree that they proved they have a plan
I never liked the plan, but still.

What people need to realize , sometimes players need a kick in the butt get traded to realize they arnt MJ and they need to find there place in this league.
Tyson Chandler is a prime example while he was here he is very cocky and obnoxious. He refused to play Center and know his role. When the bulls booted him out, it must of been a big shock to him and he learned a valuable lesson in life. His career turned around much thanks to Chris Paul and he seems like a good team player now.
He refused to play center?
Where do you get that from? All he did was play center once Eddy Curry left.
Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."
didnt he play PF
with Antonio Davis at center?
Why aren't they selling Rose's all star jersey?
No
Antonio Davis started at PF with Eddy Curry at center for a lot of the games. Then they were both traded together. Tyson was coming off the bench a lot when they were here.
Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."
Tyson Chandler was a very good player for the Bulls before he got traded
He was the anchor for arguably the best defensive team in the league in ‘05-’06. He didn’t need any kick in the butt. He played better in NO for two reasons: 1) he got to play with Chris Paul and 2) he got more minutes

well he got more minutes
because he was able to reduce his foul rate, i think.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
outcome data?
it’s a 5-year deal, and it’ll never be proven to be the correct move since we don’t know how things could’ve turned out here. So nyah nyah.

I am assuming "nyah nyah" is a friendly way of saying good morning!
Agree this is information is from the morning of February 20th 2010. Five years from now we will have more information. However, as of now Gordon does not appear to be worth his contract and I think Detroit fans regret the signing.
As if I could give a shit about Detroit fans

That's just so he can be in stealth mode,
and then you’re like ‘Oh, he’s friendly, he won’t be angry’, and BAM! SHOT IN THE FACE!!!!!!
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!
The Bulls could have kept Gordon if they had let Kurt walk.
Despite loving Ben’s contributions I thought his contract would be an albatross undermining our future.
We miss you, Ben Gordon!
Yeah, that's the obvious flaw I see with chgobr's point
In fact, had the Bulls merely let Gordon accept their offer when he tried to, rather than pulling it, it’s my understanding Gordon would have come in cheaper than Kurt. So follow that up with moving Kurt for expirings and you’ve still got all the advantages of the long-term gain, but with a better, younger, and cheaper player.
I’m glad they’ve got a plan and they’ve taken the steps they need to see it through. For that I give the deals they made at this deadline an A+. I don’t think they could have done any better. But in the long run I’m still concerned their plan will run afoul of their personal love affairs with Captain Thrust and possibly Arn Tellum.

exactly
that same sentence stuck out to me as well…as the same thing could be said about possibly re-signing Tyrus. Gar has already said that his cap hold was too large and would’ve impacted the summer.
Can we stop with posts like this already??
I think my biggest annoyance over the post-deadline talk here
is that while it’s correct to acknowledge there’s a potential long-term gain, people are going out of their way to dismiss the idea that there is indeed short-term pain.

Yes there is short-term pain,
But honestly, how much better would the Bulls be right now if they’d resigned BG, kept Salmons and TT, etc? Would they be a championship contender? I highly doubt it. Would they even be in a position to even win a playoff series? I don’t think so.
