Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

The Bulls haven't given up on using Luol Deng to try to pry power forward Al Jefferson from Minnesota. Jefferson could be the low-post scoring threat the team has lacked or, in theory, be sent to Toronto for Chris Bosh in a summer sign-and-trade.

Wow, this is both funny and pathetic
The Bulls are hoping to get an asset in return for Hinrich, such as Lakers guard Shannon Brown

annoying

the bulls already had shannon brown?!!?!Its worrisome how bad they are at recognizing talent sometimes.

This team needs a SG badly

…yet they once had Ben Gordon, JR Smith, AND Shannon Brown. Gave all away for nothing. Hilarious.

by Illini15 on Feb 16, 2010 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

In fairness...

Letting Ben Gordon walk helped create the cap space that will allow the Bulls to pursue one of Lebron, Wade, Bosh…and the Bulls got a second round pick for JR Smith which turned into Aaron Gray, and now Devin Brown…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

The Bulls could have dealt Kurt for expirings

and re-signed BG and still had that cap space for a max deal. Basically, the Bulls are horribly, horribly run.

And Devin Brown = nothing. He’s terrible.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 16, 2010 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

Well

you’re leaving out the fact that BG would have been a great asset in a potential sign-and-trade for a guy like Wade. Miami would look a whole lot better getting back, say, BG + picks + filler for Wade then possibly losing him for nothing.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 16, 2010 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

Not true

Your math is simply wrong. The only way to get room for a max deal is trading Kurt and not having BG on the books.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 16, 2010 3:28 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I dunno - Depends on the cap.

With Salmons and Hinrich gone

Luol Deng $11,345,000
Derrick Rose $5,546,160
Joakim Noah $3,128,536
James Johnson $1,713,600
Taj Gibson $1,117,680
15th pick (guess) $1,443,300
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Max FA Cost $16,568,908
Total: $43,231,204

Ben’s getting paid 10 mil this year.
With a cap of 53.5 mil – Bulls could have BG w/ Hinrich and Salmons gone.

by kingj41 on Feb 16, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

But then we'd have to move Kurt and Salmons

And if we can’t do both, we’re screwed. And BG makes 10.8 mil next year, so it’d be really, really close.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 16, 2010 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

I'm tired of you

You never contribute anything to any conversation. You simply tag along with one side and either say “yeah you’re right,” or “you’re an idiot and you’re wrong.” Or you make sarcastic comments that aren’t clever in the slightest,

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 17, 2010 1:31 AM CST up reply actions

They could've moved Kurt.

Chose not to.
And Salmons CAN be moved ya know. Maybe with Tyrus or a large expiring like Brad Miller…

Your math is simply wrong. The only way to get room for a max deal is trading Kurt and not having BG on the books.

Just do a little more research before posting.

by kingj41 on Feb 16, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

People keep forgetting

that BG wanted to accept the 54/6 offer from the Bulls, but we pulled it. We wouldn’t be paying him the ridiculous amount that the Pistons are giving him.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 16, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Salmons isn't being moved

And all reports are that there are no takers.

Hinrich is reportedly wanted by a couple teams.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 17, 2010 1:32 AM CST up reply actions

ISN'T

is not the same as CAN. Like I said, if the Bulls really wanted to move him, they could move him with someone likeTyrus, Jerome James or Brad Miller. Hinrich could’ve been moved for Blake, Outlaw, or even less if he was sent to Minny last year.
As far as Salmons moves…
(just some quick ideas below – winning be damned…)
i.e.
Heat trade
Rocket trade
Griz trade
Wolves trade

You catch my drift. Again, this is all very meaningless because it doesn’t change anything now.
But your argument that

The only way to get room for a max deal is trading Kurt and not having BG on the books.
is the best position they can be in is not right.

by kingj41 on Feb 17, 2010 8:21 AM CST up reply actions

Fine

The only way to get room for a max is trading Kurt and not having BG on the books, unless we somehow miraculously move Salmons for expirings, which seems highly unlikely at this point.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 17, 2010 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

Haha, no actually. You're the one who is "simply wrong" here.

Ben came back and accepted the 54/6 deal, but Reindsorf hated him and he pulled the offer. Guess what Kurt is scheduled to make next year? $9 million!!! Ding ding ding!!!

In this case, all we’d have to do is dump Salmons (which is all we have to do now with Kurt minus BG) to get that max cap space.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 16, 2010 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

And guess what?

With Kurt on the books, we CANT get a max FA. So with Kurt off the books and an identical salary on the books, we CANT get a max FA. Dumping Salmons is much easier said than done. All reports seem to indicate that nobody wants him.

Seriously, I live in the Detroit metro area and I talk to a lot of Pistons fans, and just about all of them view signing Ben Gordon as one of the biggest mistakes Dumars ever made. He’s a one-dimensional player (albeit a very good one-dimensional player) who isn’t worth nearly as much as he’s getting. He’s very fun to watch, but he’s no all-star.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 17, 2010 1:27 AM CST up reply actions

I'd even take Jefferson for Deng in some form

Deng, Thomas, and Salmons for Jefferson, Blount, Ellington, and a 1st rounder works well for both sides. Bulls get post scoring, a first rounder, and enough extra cap space to sign a max free agent.

Bulls would be terrible the rest of the year, but if they could then swing a hinrich trade for expirings, the Bulls could go into next year with Rose/Jefferson/Noah and have enough room to sign Joe Johnson and Rudy Gay (if he doesn’t resign).

A lineup of Rose/JJ/Gay/AlJeff/Noah soulds really freakin good.

by DRose01 on Feb 16, 2010 11:22 AM CST reply actions

Not so fast

I don’t see how they would be terrible at all. Jefferson is a beast down low. Ellington can shoot the ball and he’s had some decent games when given the playing time. Defensively we would take a step back but I think the offense would balance that out. I think we would still be in the same position this season (make the playoffs and lose in the first round) plus a first rounder and cap space that you mentioned. If they could pull that off, I might never criticize GarPax again. I said might…

Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."

I liked it

I was mostly referring to McGraw referring Shannon Brown as a some sort of asset. I don’t dislike him, but jeez. I also didn’t like the idea we might compromise and take on Vujacic.

Al Jefferson or Amare for Deng is definitely worth considering in my book. Supposedly the Wolves offered Al for Danny Granger, so maybe this is a possibility. Think I’d bite, but they still need another deal to make the cap situation work for next year.

I’m not seeing lots of love for Kurt or Salmons out there.

by Sports2 on Feb 16, 2010 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

I haven't heard any Salmons stuff lately which scares me

and I’m with you on the Vujacic thing, I really hope we don’t have to take him on to get rid of Kurt. I’d be waiting until the last second to see if the Lakers bite. I do think that if Amare goes to Cleveland, the Lakers will be more desperate and might do it (as McGraw mentions).

johns value was highest at the end of last season i would think.

and whether or not the bulls have full max cap space they will have money to spend and they will augment their team. which means fewer shots for john and a smaller role. which means declining value. i suspect john will opt out to secure the best long term deal he can get.

Hmm

Adrian Woj says the Wolves are going to trade Jefferson for a young athletic small forward.

McGraw says the Bulls wouldn’t hesitate using Luol Deng to acquire Al Jefferson.

Is there any advantage to waiting on this trade for the Summer?

This tradw wold be a no-brainer for the Bulls.

If we also can dump Hinrich, I would keep Salmons to play SF and dumping Hinrich would open up enough cap-room to chase Wade and Joe Johnson this off-season.

Wade 2010!!!!!

by illwill on Feb 16, 2010 12:02 PM CST reply actions

Another positive from this move

Is it means that Salmons would get the bulk of minutes at the SF the rest of the season, and he could put up enough numbers that if we don’t move him, he might opt out anyways.

by Grinder in Training on Feb 16, 2010 12:37 PM CST reply actions

Why?

This season is meaningless.. with or without Noah, we aren’t winning anything that matters this year. I’d only trade for Jefferson quickly, just b/c the more games he can play with Rose and Noah now, the more experience he’d have playing along side them.

by Grinder in Training on Feb 16, 2010 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

Jefferson

could be used as a sign-in-trade chip for Bosh in the off-season, but if it doesn’t work you still have a very young BIG AL

Although I usually just read the posts here...

I thought this threat was interesting. I think we should shoot for Jefferson, and here’s a three team trade that combines some of the current Bulls rumors.

This Al Jefferson trade makes too much sense

It would be so perfect, Jefferson is a quality piece, but just like McGraw said, he would be great for a sign and trade if possible. If not, oh well you have a real nice player/asset going forward. Plus, am I alone in thinking that if we trade Deng and move Salmons to the four (a position where he still actually has somewhat of a quickness advantage on some/most nights) that he would have a real nice bounceback second half, almost guaranteeing that he opts out?

And, I’m sorry, but I have no faith in the healthy Luol Deng. He’s been great, but I still feel like that injury is gonna come at any minute and I’m gonna be mad at myself for believing yet again that he could stay on the floor. But the most important question is would Minny really do this?
