Team USA Discussion/Predictions

While I realize the trade deadline is coming up next week and the All-Star game is this weekend (and will be covered by the one and only yfBB), there is also another semi-interesting NBA story making its rounds today. That, of course, was the announcement of the 27-player pool of NBA players who will eventually help to make up the next Olympic roster.  Why should any of us care? Well, because the Bulls' own (new) All-Star PG, Derrick Rose, is among those 27.

Star-divide

We would all like to see Derrick make the roster for the eventual Olympic Games in 2012, and there was some discussion this summer that led many of us to believe that he might be selected to the team. Unfortunately, though, it appears that there is going to be some stiff competition. From FanHouse:

After Denver's Chauncey Billups had committed Tuesday to being on the list, the point guard position got even deeper.

Billups joins point guards Deron Williams of Utah, Chris Paul of New Orleans, Derrick Rose of Chicago and Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City. With likely three to make the final roster, Billups, the oldest player named Wednesday at 33, has a good chance. He can fulfill the veteran role open after Dallas point guard Jason Kidd retired from international competition following winning gold in the 2008 Olympics, and there is some concern over Paul's current knee injury.

I don't remember there being much discussion of Billups participating, and I figured Rose would play his way onto the team as the rightful 3rd point guard behind CP3 and Deron Williams. Sadly, it seems that Billups' "veteran presence" (Does that not sound like Bulls-speak?) will be a lock, and if CP3 and Deron are healthy, I'm not so sure our star is going to be selected.

What say you, BaB? Will Derrick make the team? What are everyone's roster predictions when the list is pared to 12? And who would you pick of the 27?

The list is as follows:

Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets
Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz
Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors)
Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers)
Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic)
LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets)
Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat)
Deron Williams (Utah Jazz)
Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers)
Amar’e Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns)
LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers)
Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets)
Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies)
Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers)
Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers)
Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers)
Al Jefferson (Minnesota Timberwolves)
David Lee (New York Knicks)
Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets);
Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves)
O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies)
Kendrick Perkins (Boston Celtics)
Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls)
Gerald Wallace (Charlotte Bobcats)
Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder)

According to the article

Rondo basically didn’t respond to any of the Team USA management or whatever. Weird.

He can't shoot though

And in FIBA rules bigs can camp in the lane…..so he’s not a good fit.

I am surprised no Noah (France perhaps)? He’s better O and D than Porkins.

Kirk Hinrich

Was a pretty good player a few years ago too (heck he’s decent now) but then lost all confidence in his O game.

Didn’t Kirk start in the 2006 WC’s?

Joakim Noah!

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Feb 10, 2010 4:07 PM CST reply actions

I think he makes the team

They want to have some guys to get experience for the future. Guys like Durant, Rose and Lopez, I think, will make it.

Who do you think Lopez makes it over?

You would think the bigs would consist of Howard, Bosh, and Amare/Boozer, since LeBron and Melo will play some 4. I think Durant is a shoe-in at this point. He has to be.

by Illini15 on Feb 10, 2010 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

Stat's not invited and Boozer couldn't get off the bench during the 08 Olympics

Howard and Bosh are the locks, and Lopez would be a good fit as a complimentary style post player

Oops, missed Stat on the list, but would be shocked to see him picked since they need bangers down low

by snley on Feb 10, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Not necessarily

They played Bosh a lot at center over Howard in the Olympics. Stat would be fine against international centers. I still don’t think they will pick Stat over one of these young bigs though because they need to have some guys that will play beyond that. I could see Lopez or somebody like Kevin Love being one those type of guys to make it.

Yeah, this is basically what I said below.

But I just don’t see them taking Lopez right now. You’d think they’ll go with someone more established, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Boozer got the nod over the rest since he’s “been there.”

Yeah maybe not right now

but I could see one of these young bigs on the 2012 team over Boozer or Stat. That article said they didn’t even want Stat but he reached out to them.

by bigballa10 on Feb 10, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

they've been taking a big picture approach to this thing

I would think they’d want to fill the bench with young guys who will likely be starting down the road over veterans who aren’t likely to play much. That said, I don’t think Rose would be a good fit because all he can do right now is score. Without a consistent 3 point shot or defensive abilities, he doesn’t have much to offer as a role player.

So you think they'd take Lopez then?

I guess I could see it, but a powerful center with post moves isn’t really necessary in international ball.

by Illini15 on Feb 10, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

I do

He’s very skilled though not really overpowering. Then again he’s a bit slow footed so you never know. I think he would be a better choice than Oden if they want one of the young bigs.

Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."

by bigballa10 on Feb 10, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Here is how I see it

the following guys will make it if they want a spot:

1. Kobe Bryant
2. Chris Paul
3. Lebron James
4. Chris Bosh
5. Dwayne Wade
6. Carmelo Anthony
7. Dwight Howard

That leaves 5 open spots.

8. Deron Williams is probably the 2nd best point guard in the NBA, and he’s big, which counts in international competition.

9. Kevin Durant is a superstar and the team is always looking for shooters.

3 spots left.

I think the top candidates at this point would be

Billups – vet who MAY not be pissed by not playing. Good shooter and defender
Rose – scoring guard with good size. Won’t be pissed if he doesn’t play
Lopez – teams need a big and someone who can score on the post.
Amare – he would have been on the team had he not been injured in previous years
Wallace – defensive stopper, in the Tayshaun Prince vain. Won’t be upset about playing time.

My guess is that Rose, Wallace and Amar’e fill out the final 3 spots. Lopez is on such a bad team I doubt he gets respect. Rose joins Durant as the young guys of the future. Wallace is the defensive stopper, part time 4 who can rebound and just happy to be there.

10. Rose
11. Wallace
12. Amar’e

The biggest threat I can see to Rose not making it is if they decide they would rather have a veteran point guard be the 3rd point guard and not a young one. I think Rose and Billups will be going after Kidd’s spot, unless Paul or Williams drop out.

by Basketball Smurf on Feb 10, 2010 4:52 PM CST reply actions

I figured Rose was a lock

but you know they’re going to want that “stabilizing” presence that Billups bring. So I’m afraid he’ll be one of the choices. Alternatively, is there any way that they’d choose Rose as that big PG instead of Deron, though? I just don’t see it. Deron is better right now, even though he’s not as dynamic. He’s a better passer and shooter than Rose, and a better defender. I’m afraid our guy Derrick is going to be left in the cold, unless they really want to build toward the future.

As far as the defensive stopper role, I was initially thinking that would go to Iggy, since he can guard 2s and 3s successfully, but with Wallace getting more attention (and also staying healthy) recently, I think he could grab one of those last spots. He’s probably even more of a versatile defender than Iggy is. If he’s healthy, I think I’d take him as well.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 10, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

The 2 key differences I think between Iggy and Wallace

is that Wallace can play the 4 and I don’t think Iguodala would just be happy to be on the team. Iggy has a bit of a ego, and I don’t think he wants to be on the team to pat Lebron and Kobe on the back. Wallace seems more humble. But I could be misjudging Iggy.

by Basketball Smurf on Feb 10, 2010 5:13 PM CST up reply actions

If LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Melo, Howard, and Bosh

can all play together, you’d think that a guy like Iggy would have no problem with it, even if he didn’t play much. I mean, freaking Dwyane Wade came off the bench. That must have been a huge ego it, but he handled it just fine.

Thrusting toward the playoffs, one game at a time.

by Illini15 on Feb 10, 2010 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think as long as those 1st 9 he mentioned want to play

they are a lock. Deron Williams was on the team already so I don’t see them taking Rose over him but over Billups I could see. I really bet Billups is just for this year and one of the main guys doesn’t play like maybe Kobe.

I agree about one or more of the big names not playing this summer

I don’t think the World Championships have as much cache with these guys as the Olympics.

by CrashDavis on Feb 11, 2010 9:10 AM CST up reply actions

I really don't think they'll end up taking a 35-year-old Billups over Rose

Here’s the roster I’d pick:
1. Melo
2. Bosh
3. Kobe
4. Howard
5. LeBron
6. Paul
7. Wade
8. Williams
9. Amare
10. Durant
11. Rose
12. Love

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 11, 2010 12:10 AM CST reply actions

originally i thought billups would get the nod because billups is better at this moment,

but now i feel differently. age is one factor for sure. but also: do we know how billups’ game will translate into international ball? if the international refs arent buying billups’ herky-jerky, slow-it-down-and-draw-some-contact style then billups could be surprisingly ineffective.84

My 12 man team

Lebron
Wade
Kobe
Paul
Melo
Howard
Bosh

Durant
Rose
Granger
Odom
Lopez

I think Rose is the most explosive PG in the league, sure CP3 is better all around and DWill right now is better, but Rose’s explosiveness and speed will be a huge asset, so he’s in.

Durant’s the 2nd biggest lock sans Lebron on this team.

Lopez gets the nod because they need the size. Boozer might get this role because he’s returning, but Boozer didn’t play all that much….Deron Williams too is close to getting this spot….but I think the size and all around skills of Brook Lopez has him the early winner.

Odom’s not nearly as talented as some of the otehrs on here. Well let’s be honest he’s as talented as any of them, but not as consistent. Still he has dimensions and ability to play multiple positions and bring the ball up the court so that helps his chances, so he’s a pick because of that. Plus I think he’s very friendly with Kobe and perhaps even Wade.

Granger’s the outside shooter they always want (and well he’s better than Redd was last time Redd made it).

Of course those first 7 are locks just by showing interest.

Sadly....through thick and thin....

I don't think there is any way short of injury

that Deron Williams is not back on this team. Odom will be 32 in 2012. I don’t see them picking him if it came down to it between him and these younger guys that they want to get experience for the future. I’d sub D Will for Odom there but everyone else I could see. I like the Granger pick because he can shoot the ball, defend, and rebound. That would be a nice addition.

yeah and they've said there will probably be 3 pg's

i think it’s kinda bullshit that they might choose billups – he’ll be 35 by the time they play in ’12. kidd was trash despite them claiming he was a veteran presence. i kinda laugh at wikipedia citing that he was shooting 60% from the field when he was averaging less than 2 pts a game in the FIBA championships in ’07.

One thing I will say about Kidd though is him, Kobe, and Lebron were awesome together defensively and in transition.

not saying kidd was all bad

but i don’t think they need to replace an old guy with another old guy. i’d put derrick on.

how to do anything.

"Oooohhh, cat in the wall, eh? Now you're talkin' my language."

by TheMoon on Feb 11, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

I think they might prefer the size

That’s why Odom….his ability to be a point forward at stretches helps quite a bit too. I think Rose’s explosiveness might make him the pick over DWill (who is more a pure PG, sure but Paul’s better than Williams and well Rose’s strength and speed are a bigger asset for a change of pace after Paul sits).

I think they’d prefer size over PG skills…..but I’m not one to say Odom is better than Williams, he isn’t….but heck they’ve chosen more on needs and team picks than others.

Derrick’s far from a lock on this team unfortunately because the 2 PG’s there are so strong….

Sadly....through thick and thin....

by majoyenrac on Feb 11, 2010 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but they had 3 point guards before so

Derrick would basically just be replacing Jason Kidd on the roster. Odom was on the team once before though. I don’t know, with the main guys pretty much a lock, I’m sure Colangelo would want some of the guys from 2012 to carry over to 2016. That’s the main reason why I don’t see guys like Odom and Billups making it over Rose and one of the young bigs like Love, Lopez or maybe Oden.

Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."

by bigballa10 on Feb 11, 2010 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

I think Love's a good fit in the international game

Foreign bigs aren’t as athletic, and the 3-pt line is closer, both of which help Love, I think.

by Poloplaya14 on Feb 11, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

But Lebron

Would be 29 then…..in his prime and ready to come back.
Wade would be 31-32, quite possible to come back
Melo would be what 29-30 then too
Howard what 26?
Bosh 30?

They’d have plenty to come back. Derrick would be 25…..

There’s enough youth that could return here.

I know they had 3 PG’s before, but I think if there was any issues it was size. Odom suffices that and has enough skills to handle some guard duties….and he’s friendly with at least 2 of the elite superstars, which helps his case.

But yeah DWILL or Rose are better players, I’m just thinking int he past, like when Hinrich made it over Arenas because they wanted Hinrich’s more PG ability, despite the fact that Gilbert was and gun issues notwithstanding still is a better talent.

Sadly....through thick and thin....

by majoyenrac on Feb 11, 2010 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but if they want size..

Why not go for Lopez, Love, or Jefferson. Those guys will probably be significantly better than Odom 2 years from now, too.
