Go for the Gold: Risky Noah Replacement Plan
I know, this plan has numerous flaws and pitfalls, yet, it might just work.
The Bulls big man depth is down to just Boozer (undersized PF, let along C), Taj (likewise undersized, and under-muscled), Asik (raw, foul prone, and skinny), Kurt Thomas (over-the-hill), and Deng (ok as a PF, but still doesn't solve our C problems). Let's face it, we're likely to see some small ball lineups in the next 8-10 weeks while Noah recovers, and even then, we lack front court depth.
Given that small ball is likely to be the "poison" of our choosing anyway - and we don't want to wear out Boozer and Deng this early in the season - why not get another small ball center with tons of potential (and a rookie contract) to fill in while Noah's out? Who am I talking about? The once-promising, but now utterly forgotten Anthony Randolph!
Glued to the end of the Knicks bench and collecting DNP-CDs at nearly the same rate as I collected Magic The Gathering cards in 4th grade, Randolph is certainly gettable. The Nets made some "big" moves this week, collecting two first rounders to put towards the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes, and you'd have to think that New York wouldn't mind a first rounder to bolster their Carmelo bid too. Perhaps Bogans and the Bulls' 2011 pick for Randolph?
At 6'11, Randolph has the height to play center, and his skill set is actually quite comparable to Noah's in that he's a good rebounder, ball handler, and shot blocker. Away from the offense-only Knicks and Warriors, Thibs might actually be able to get him to play some good defense too, as he's got all the right attributes. True, he's more power forward than center, but so are the rest of our "big men".
I know he was horrible in preseason, but let's face it, the kid was never given a chance. He was given the Tyrus Thomas treatment in Golden State, and now even more so in New York. Every time he's gotten extended playing time, he's made it count.
Discounting the current season, his per 40 stats are: 20 ppg, 3 assists, and 12 rebounds, with a PER of approximately 17.5.
Hollinger on his defense: "Randolph has the potential to be a Marcus Camby-esque dominator defensively -- he rated third among power forwards in blocks per minute and sixth in steals per minute -- and needs only to improve his understanding and effort level to become an ace disruptor."
Hollinger also points out that he has a horrible outside shot, and makes terrible decisions on offense. I would suspect that as the 4th or 5th option on a disciplined Bulls team, his offensive shortcomings shouldn't make too much of a difference. We're not gonna be running plays for him. Open dunks and putbacks are all that will be expected of him.
So now you might be saying to yourself, "Diz, I follow your line of thinking, but why do the Bulls give up a first round pick for a 'bandaid' to hold the frontcourt together until Noah gets back?" Well, the need for frontcourt depth has certainly been emphasized by Boozer, and now Noah's, injuries. The Bulls need a permanent solution at SG but shouldn't give up their only serviceable backup big to get such a player. Assuming Randolph lives up to his potential once coming to the Bulls, we now have two "starting caliber" big men in Randolph and Gibson, each with considerable trade value. Upon Noah's return, the Bulls can trade whichever of the two makes most sense for a three point shooting, defense playing shooting guard. Buy low, sell high.
Is it a risky plan? Yes. Could it backfire? Yes. Is Randolph more of a small forward than a power forward, let alone center? Probably. Is it possible that Randolph just sucks and will never figure it out? Of course. But the Bulls could use another big guy right now, and the downside to this plan really isn't that big considering we still have Charlotte's first rounder in our back pocket and our 2011 first rounder isn't likely to be that great anyway.
I say it's worth looking into.
I'll leave you with this youtube link (sorry Tyrus, but you got owned!).

I dunno
It’s not like Noah will be out for the year or the Bulls are in serious danger of missing the playoffs due to his absence. For the sake of a deep playoff run, it seems much more important to pursue an upgrade at the 2. Thus I would rather save any and all first rounders and any and all remaining cap space for that effort.
I hear that. On the other hand...
if the Bulls can raise Randolph’s value they might end up with a starting SG without having to give up Taj, thus maintaining frontcourt depth and making us doubly dangerous!
Big “if”, I know.

I agree
I don’t think we should sent out any assets unless we get a starting 2 or major upgrade. Noah, our starting center, will be back in 10 weeks. Our future starting 2 guard plays for another team however.

I like the idea.
However, I just don’t see it happening with this management group. Also, I think the Knicks would want to keep an actual player instead of all picks. Plus, if they don’t trade him until the trade deadline, that gives his next team just over a season to decide what to do with him. I’m not sure they’d give up a starting caliber SG for that. I don’t know, though.
On the other hand, if Batum comes back around to previous levels of play, Matthews, Roy, Batum, (plus Johnson, Babbit, Mills, and of course, Miller) is stilla pretty loaded back-court. Meanwhile, they’d be saddled with Aldridge and, and, and… Dunta Cunningham for the big man future.
If Randolph came in and played really well for the bulls (unlikely, but possible), I could see them easily giving up Rudy for him.

Just think of that starting lineup!
Rose avg 23.9 pts 8.9 ast……
Rudy Gay avg 21 pts 6.10 rebounds……
Deng avg 17.6 pts 6 rebounds…………..
Boozer avg 17 pts 8 rebounds……….
Noah avg 14 pts 11 rebounds……We all noticed how Noah has been sub par and he still avg 14 and 11….
Now with that lineup we can take down the heat……

either the knicks are stupid (highly likely) or he really does blow
cause, if you want to trade a guy, don’t you put him on the floor and show him off? they’re trying to get denver to bite by showing their unwillingness to give him any burn?

So I read this whole thing
picturing Zach Randolph. I was super confused and was gonna yell at you for how wrong you were
You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.

I like the risk reward of this type of thinking...
As long as the first round pick the Bulls give up is their own lottery protected pick in ’11 or ’12…not the Charlotte Pick

Knicks are going to include him in any Carmelo trade.
That’s why they got him in the first place, and that’s why they’re keeping him now. And Randolph has way more value to Denver than a late first. So it seems highly unlikely.
He only has a year and a half left on his rookie contract and has had trouble getting consistent minutes
Many teams may view a late first as more appealing
Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?

Right. Especially someone rebuilding like the Nuggets.
(like they would be if they were trading Melo)
I don’t know, I could now see it either way. Get a good player to try to bring him back cheap-ish like Tyrus Thomas. Or, geta draft and stash to bring over cheap when you get out of the contracts of K-Mart, Nene (if wanted), Chauncey, etc.

Its all about getting that first round pick for NY.
get another team involved and maybe they can turn the Charlotte pick or the Bulls late round pick into something higher.

hahah what a ridic panning for Anthony Randolph
Who cant play PF or C at about 220 lbs for more than 10 minutes. And the fact that he isn’t very good, right now.
Ronny Turiaf plays ahead of him (I like Turiaf)
"I love you, mommy!" - Joakim Noah
Keith Bogans plays ahead of Brewer.
I don’tlike Bogans.

I don't get why we don't trade draft picks for verajao
He plays a poor-man’s noah-ish way (and no, they don’t just say that because of the hair). And his team is bad, which automatically makes him much easier to trade for than other options.
by Scala-three-ne on Dec 16, 2010 10:07 PM CST via mobile reply actions
But... but but...
I hate Varejao!
Also, the Bulls would have to trade other pieces than just draft picks. Varejao DOES make money, after all.
"Did Michael Jordan join the Pistons when he couldn't beat them? No. He dug down deep and went out and kicked their fucking ass."
I just think he's the most similar to Noah player on a bad team right now
I really would prefer to trade with a bad team to give up as little as possible

yeh not a huge fan of Verajao....
but this is actually a good idea.
Boom! Asik, Asik, Asik the room.
Yeah... that contract?
No way.
You’d have to wait until next Thursday, when Scalabrine can be traded, then trade him, Bogans, Thomas and James Johnson for him. I think Cleveland would go for it just to get out from under that contract, as he’s their longest contract.
He’s good, and would be helpful for 2 months, but I can’t see sacrificing the next 4 years for two months. I guess it would make Taj “expendable” so if you could get a starting-caliber SG for him, I’m for it. But absent that, nada.
What about:
Rose – Watson – Lucas III
Iggy – Weaver – Byars
Deng – Byars – Weaver
Boozer – Varejao
Noah – Asik
I mean, that would pretty much be the team. I don’t know. It’s a lot of money.
I’d rather just get a D-Leaguer and see what happens there.

iggy?
how did you get iggy in that trade? plus iggy is extremely overrated. He is deng with athleticism (which is nice) but not that nice.
He's a worse shooter though
And turns the ball over at a higher rate, and despite being the main guy in Philly for a few years has about the same USG% as Deng, and 2 years older.
right, and if i suggested deng for iggy swap, i would think it was a lateral move, as i've said a bunch.
but Deng is a lot better than Bognas, Brewer and Korver.
And so woujld Iggy be.

I'd be fine if we had bad contracts...
I like varejao, but his contract ain’t so great once Noah get’s back….
It’s too bad. Andy should have been a $4M/yr man…..his contract is awful.
Even if it was $8M, I’d live with that for 2 years, but for 4 more guaranteed years….ugh.
Plus who can we send? ….I don’t want to send out Korver or Ronnie Brewer—boht are important to our team, and well we’d be even more f-d at the 2 and backup 3 spots….
Andy’s contract sucks…..I actually think it could be better even where it was, if we didn’t have Noah, but Varejao isn’t nearly as good as Noah, despite the constant, annoying comparisons given their crazy hair and energetic styles…

We could certainly use an expert flopper right now
but we have to trade watson + 2 from JJ, Thomas, Bogans in order to match salaries + maybe a future 1st. Or maybe watson, jj, thomas, bogans for varejao and parker
I'd like to see the bulls give James Johnson more of a chance too
The only glove he needs is a batting glove. - RWShow on Adam Dunn signing.
JJ for center!

The Miami Heat: Like ants and a magnifying glass. ... OH NO! CHRIS BOSH’S BEAUTIFUL FACE!!!!!!!!
I would love the idea of going for Randolph
But I think the kNICKS want a lot for him. D’Antoni has said even last week he doesn’t see him out of the rotation all year, he’ll get time in this long season and has high hopes still for him.
I would trade JJ-Charlotte Option and our 2011 first for him and roll the dice though (thinking if it works, who cares what we lost, our first next year likely to be in the low 20’s anyway—even wtih Noah’s injury). Charlotte Option might be nice in a few years because they’re looking quite awful, but we won’t have it for a time, and who knows Randolph could trump that…..
And I like JJ but we don’t really have the time for him, and I like the prospect and height of Anthony Randolph more than JJ.
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
Randolph isn’t worth JJ and two picks. Not at all. Maybe a JJ and one 1st rounder(not the Charlotte one). I’m not too high on Randolph, he’s tall but wayyy too thin and in his third year he’s still rail thin. He doesn’t know what position he is. He’s a PF with the weight of a SF and he thinks he has the talent of a perimeter player.
2 first round picks?
really two first round picks for a guy that hasnt made a rotation on two separate teams. The bobcats pick is looking like it could be a top 10 or at least a lottery pick. that pick is valuable and could be used for other trades for an actual starting shooting guard or a decent player. two picks for randolph and james johnson is absurd. plus randolph is not a center, he is a point forward (similar to lamar odom), and small forward.
Your description was absurd
The description of Anthony randolph as having a skill set similar to that of noah is absurd. Noah is a banger with, decent handles for a center but terrible overall. Randolph (if you have watched him play) is like a point forward. He is fluid with the ball, can actually lead breaks without you yelling at the tv screen. He is far more similar to a lamar odom both in game and attitude. He is laid back, smooth, a great rebounder, decent defender, can handle the ball, and basically play four positions on the court. At the sametime randolph has never produced at an nba level besides in the preseason two years ago (where he put up record scoring numbers). I am surprised he isnt even playing in New York, given that he would be a perfect fit for their style of offense. Bc he isnt playing you have to question if he really is that talented and deserving of a first round pick. The bulls also (i believe) have the bobcats first round pick, which they got for tyrus thomas, who is a player randolph was actually compared to coming into the league. Giving up that pick would not be smart. If the bulls really need help picking up a rasheed wallace would be a smarter and less costly move. wallace is a defender that can open up the court with his range, can do some pick and pops with rose and who can give you a solid 15minutes a game. the bulls dont need to trade their future or prospects for a backup center. Yet if the knicks are willing to take james johnson for randolph, then please make the trade.
A few points of rebuttal:
1) I clearly advocated trading the Bulls’ 2011 pick, not the Bobcats’ pick. I don’t think anyone would qualify trading away a late 1st round pick as mortgaging our future away
2) I have indeed seen Randolph play, but did you happen to see ‘Sheed play last year? He’s done. He’s lost his ability to shoot, defend, and move in any sort of athletic fashion.
3) I don’t think that comparing Noah (7 foot athletic big, with skills not generally associated with centers) to Randolph (6’11 athletic big with skills not generally associated with 6’11 bigs) is that far fetched. Randolph certainly has the capacity to help us much in the same way that Noah does.
Also it is called the 'risky Noah replacement plan'
Not the fucking ‘trebling with fear, breakout in a cold sweat with pee running down your leg at thought of a trade plan’
relax
Boom! Asik, Asik, Asik the room.
