Rasheed Wallace's Crystal Ball
In the midst of the terrible news on Noah and all the consideration done (already) on what the Bulls might do, a few names were mentioned in trades or signings.
The "Need for Sheed" has been brought up in posts and comments, and then I realized something-- that Rasheed Wallace is a psychic.
About two weeks ago after the Bulls lost to the Celtics on a Friday night, coach Thibs gave his press conference, and he got a visit from someone.
In the midst of head coach Tom Thibodeau's postgame press conference, a familiar face popped his head in and asked a question.
"I need a job," former Celtic Rasheed Wallace said.
It sounded like a joke, considering a few seconds later Wallace peeked his head into the Bulls locker room and started chanting "Scal-a-bri-ne".
Did Thibodeau think Wallace was serious?
"I don't know," he said with a chuckle. "He's a good player."
Did 'Sheed know the future? Did he slip Jo some anti-thumb juice in the locker room? Is Rasheed Wallace just a whole hell of a lot smarter than we give him credit for?
This was just something I found funny, so don't think I'm leading the parade to the Berto Center to sign the guy....yet. Because last season in the playoffs he looked like less than half of the player he used to be.
But it is still an interesting conversation-- what do you guys think?
Too old? Too locker room cancer-y? Too many T's? Or could he help?

judging from his most recent work, id say he could not help the bulls or anyone else in any
envisionable way.

What?
Sheed was awesome in game 7 of the finals last year…..awesome. Boston fans want to claim Perk was needed, but Sheed outplayed Perkins.
He’s a heck of a defender. THe issue still is that he’s too emotional….and now he’s aging so he can’t turn on the switch like he could.
But Rasheed Wallace is light years better than Asik, Kurt Thomas and even Erica Dampier (bigs that had been available).
It hink he might just be the ticket…..if he’s serious about coming back.
And I though JoNo was hurt 2 weeks ago, so perhaps it’s more than a coincidence that he met with Thibs.

put game seven in the balance with the other 90 games he played last year and his work will
be correctly judged as utterly miserable. imagine you work in an office, and there is a guy whose work you have to do because hes too busy shopping online, a guy who actually sleeps at work, a guy who regularly flips out emotionally for no good reason. thats sheed. does that sound like someone you’d like to be around? does that sound like someone who does NOT hinder the whole culture of work? and really, thats not even the biggest issue. you know what that issue is? its that he really, really sucks.

Sheed isn't light-years better than anything.
There is no statistical or visual evidence to say otherwise. Having one good game 7 does not make-up for the other 90+ miserable games he played. And Bulls regular season is not finals game 7. Jo will be back before the playoffs anyways and Sheed would be relegated to Scals status.

actually, this is pretty easy. Thibs was there last year, and hes smart. im sure he knows
what hes doing. if sheed was as bad as i say he was, then the bulls wont go near him. if he wasnt, then perhaps he’ll come aboard, and if he does his presence will be certified for me by thibs’ approval.

i guess, technically, game 7 of the finals is his "most recent work", but I think we might need to look a little more than that.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

We're not getting
A great big on the cheap regardless.
I think Sheed can play just fine if given consistent time (something he didn’t always have in Boston). I think Thibs will have an inside scoop if he’s worth the risk.
He is a 2 month stop gap anyway, and a guy who’s capable of doing things especially defensively that would help us out.
We don’t need much else from him, just a capable big who can be a lockdown defender (which he was even last year)……for 2 months.
I don’t know why not?
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
he did not outplay Perkins in the series
Perkins job was to defend and push Gasol away from the basket. Gasol had like 18 rebounds in game 7. How can you say he replaced Perkins? The Celtics lost that series in part because Perkins wasn’t there.

Bynum wasn't there fully either
Pau had 1 bad game the entire series. He’s the best PF in the game…..and was on his game, half of his time was spent going up against KG in that game anyway, and I’d be hard pressed to hear that Pau just went off on Sheed and not KG, I remember that game, Sheed had a bit of a turn back the dial game..
Watching that game, Sheeds 11-8-2 and solid D added something (a scoring threat) that the C’s lacked with Perk on the floor. As a defender Sheed’s every bit as solid as Perkins is when Sheed’s on his game even at this age, and Sheed had a great perhaps last game he’ll ever play.
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
Sheed isn't as good a defender as Perkins
it really wasn’t close last year. Wallace played better in the playoffs than he had during the year, but in game 7 Boston needed Perks size and rebounding. The team that won the rebounding battle won every game. Perkins being out those last 2 games also allowed LA to go with Odom more than Bynum. i think Perkins being out had a big effect.
by Basketball Smurf on Dec 16, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions
Bynum was a beast in game 1 of that series too
Before he was injured too bad to continue…..
I’d say Bynum is clearly superior in every way than Perkins…..
So I think Boston is crying foul between the 2.
As for this argument, either way you slice it, we’re not getting Perkins, and we might be able to get Sheed on the cheap….
Few folks are available, we need him for 2 mos, why not roll the dice.
I’d trust Sheed as a starter over Kurt Thomas (too old) and Asik. And Taj and Boozer are too short…..
I think Thomas is our stop gap starter….which might work, but if you can get Sheed, why not?

btw, once major gets on a track, there is no changing his/her mind
just fyi

There is changing my mind
Just not when you’re an asshole Tyger :).
I listen.
I do think Sheed played well in taht game 7 when they needed him. I think he came in 25 lbs heavy last year and wasn’t motivated in the year. He’s not under contract, so if that’s still the case, he can stay home.
But as a 2 month stopgap, I still ahven’t seen an argument why he’s crap.
And I do think Sheed outplayed what Perkins could have done in game 7….but alas we’ll never know.
Thanks though for trying to tell everyone that you know exactly how I think. THat’s much appreciated.
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
If he wasn't in shape at all last season
And that’s a major reason why he sucked during the regular season. What makes you think he’s in shape now, when he hasn’t been under contract to play basketball?
If you sign someone off the street today, how long do you think it’ll take before they’re in NBA game shape? I’d say a couple of months at the minimum, and that’s not even factoring the Sheed laziness factor. There is no way he’s useful as a stopgap, if that time is also when he’d be trying to get himself ready.
He has no contract
If he isn’t in shape, he’s not going to get a contract and that’ll be null and void.
If he wants to come back, it might motivate him to get in shape. He’s fluctuated a bit with that the last few years.
PJ Brown was signed off the street and was able to play pretty competitively quickly.
Sheed’s been a pro athlete for what 15 years before this year. The Bulls aren’t going to bring him in if he’s not close to being ready.
Heck Sweetney was able to play 17-20 MPG for a time there being clearly 75lbs overweight…..
But Sheed should be able to play. We’re not looking for a whole year or 40 minutes a night.
If he’s not in shape, we wouldn’t have him. That’s for him to prove. But if it seems he’s been talking with Thibs, perhaps he’s been working on his conditioning. If he’s not in condition, we go elsewhere. We don’t have him on a 3 yr $15M deal and probably wouldn’t sign him for more than the vet min anyway.
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
If your whole desire for him
is conditional that he’s in shape already, then this is easy. There’s no way that he is, but if so the Bulls will se he’s serious and bring him in.
He cant work himself in shape in time to be useful. It took him almost a full season last year. We also saw last year that he’s not effective when he’s out of shape, not in 15 minutes or 40.
Why is there no way that he is
?
It’s not like he was always way out of shape his entire career. He had a fat year in Detroit and then lost the weight the next offseason. He had a really fat year last year….
But obviously you must know more than I do.
Of course it’s conditional that he’s in shape. Why that’s even a question?
He’s not under our contract, and if he’s still 40lbs overweight or what not, I think they’d avoid him like the plague. I mean he’s not really good in the sense of complaining to refs (and I think he helped make Richard Hamilton and Tayshawn Prince the whiny crybabies they’ve been the last 4-5 years)…..
2010-2011: I put the Scottie-Barkley Rockets feud curse on the Wade-James-Bosh trio.....
He retired the first year of a 3 year contract
because of back problems. He has been known to be lazy. He was overweight last season. There really isn’t a logical reason to think he would be able to get it together before Noah comes back to even serve as a stopgap.
I really like to know what makes you think he would be anywhere near “in shape” right now.
That being said, I’d rather have him than Scalabrine, but still, I think the Bulls should look else for big man help while Noahs out.
I remember once former Bull Dave Corzine staring at a stat sheet after a loss when he had one rebound and Michael Jordan offering, "One more rebound than a dead man."

Sheed is fat and lazy and spends more time getting technicals than working guys over in the post.
by Ozzie Montana on Dec 16, 2010 12:52 PM CST up reply actions
Also if you think he's as good of a defender than Perkins then there's no hope.
Perkins can play Dwight Howard 1-on-1, Sheed had the posture of a pregnant woman last year.
by Ozzie Montana on Dec 16, 2010 12:53 PM CST up reply actions
He may play D, but he's nowhere near the rebounder / shotblocker
that Noah is. Plus, didn’t he shy away from contact and shoot 3’s more and more in his last season?

i don't think he wants to play basketball anymore
and unless he needs the money, than this ain’t close to happening. Plus he sucked last year, so, the Bulls probably wouldn’t want him.
by Basketball Smurf on Dec 16, 2010 12:25 PM CST up reply actions
I actually do think Wallace is way smarter than most people give him credit for.
But I don’t like his basketball playing anymore.
Unless you think he can get back up to 35%+ again from three (thus, making an Iggy deal “possible”), I dont think he’s good. In all honesty, I think the team IS good enough to stay in contention without running Rose, Deng, Boozer and Gibson into the ground, that I think they should give a young guy from the D-League a real shot. I know they won’t… and that Wallace is far more likely to get a job than someone like Rod Benson, but I’d rather have the latter.

People give him credit for his intelligence all the time.
As long as you don’t listen to some ignorant fool at the bar down the street, who only sees the guy gets technicals on sportscenter, and doesn’t actually watch the games, most people know he’s very intelligent. If anything I’d suggest his intelligence is overhyped by the media.. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard it talked about.

i think its smart
we don’t have to take on a long term commitment, and we can bury him on the bench when noah returns. why the hell not? he’s six fouls, a big body, and some hilarious T sequences under the new rules
Taj Gibson needs Horace Grant goggles
I think the real travesty is Luol
