Thats a bullshit move submarining people like that.

It’s one thing to try and get a charge but that fucking Pacers team is trash. Flopping all night trying bullshit baiting the refs. That shouldn’t happen. Thats how you get people hurt. learn how to play basketball. Thats why I always hated when the clumsy football players used to come and try and play basketball. The have to play 100% all out effort and hurt everyone. No talent. I’m talking like offensive linemen or defensive linemen types. I was a linebacker so I’m not saying all football players suck at basketball. I just hate clumsy people in rec basketball. Sorry I had to vent.

ALL I want for Christmas is a starting NBA shooting guard and throw in a decent backup point guard!!! Come on Paxson.. seriously John Lucas 3?

by SoulEater7 on Dec 13, 2010 11:02 PM CST reply actions

i think tyger's post in the game thread is spot on: knowing how to

draw fouls (which means doing so economically) can actually keep you safe. people mention wade a lot but wade never got hurt because he drew fouls; wade got hurt because he used to sometimes do crazy, unnecessary shit like what rose did tonight. kobe, billups, lebron, melo, etc. know this and they dont get hurt much at all.

All the guys you mention are all bigger and stronger than Rose. Billups is an outlier and it took him years to learn how to draw fouls.

In that specific instance Rose avoided body contact and it netted him an injury. For the most part he doesn’t put himself in harm’s way and is still absorbing a ton of contact. I don’t know what else he can do besides turning into Iverson and just accepting the fact that he will get pummeled every night.

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 13, 2010 11:11 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

YES!

Thanks for being the voice of reason. The clip posted by Tim S in the other thread shows perfectly how much contact Rose takes on his way to the rim. He gets grabbed before going up, bodied in the air, and has doen these things without being hurt. The fact that he hasn’t torn a referees face off is a big accomplishment.

FYI, to support the Billups idea: .355, .345, .289, .284, .416, .462, .418, .513…these are Billups FTA/FGA ratios from his rookie year until the 05’-06’ season (I skipped one season where he only played 13 games, he came back with his two worst ratios by the way).

Now for Rose: .206, .246, .249. Rose has shown improvement so far and he can get better. Chauncey did not really start getting to the line as well as he does now until his 5th full year! I’d rather see Rose make slow progress in this area than just go nuts and get himself hurt. Especially with Rose developing a three point shot, his efficiency is going to get a ton better, so he can work on drawing fouls, but keep himself safe.

Furthermore, if Rose would get calls like this or this or this or this, Rose would get to the line more :).

And he needs to strengthen his wrists and ankles.

Jordan hired Tim Grover because he wanted to prevent injuries. The kind of workout that prevents injuries is not necessarily going to flatter the body — it’s about strengthening joints, as opposed to enlarging the chest or upper arms or tightening the abs.

Injury is a legitimate concern, and everything possible needs to be done to prevent it from happening. But if Rose wants to be the best, shying away from contact is not the answer.

by Tim S. on Dec 14, 2010 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

Rose also doesn't have the opportunity to get cheap foul calls

specifically, the play where a defenders arms are outstretched to you and you bring the rise up for a shot in a way that brings your arms through his, and, the pump fake and then lean in.

Those are plays not to score but to get fouls and thats how Chauncey gets his. Defenders are never up on Rose enough for him to do either and he doesn’t need pump fakes to get shots.

by JockstrapNoah on Dec 14, 2010 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

That's a good point

Players give Rose’s drive so much respect that they don’t play up on him as much. Thus, there is generally less contact drawn.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Dec 14, 2010 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

Defenders didn't play up on Jordan either.

One of Jordan’s favorite moves was to go baseline under the basket and then back into the bigs, creating space for a shot and a foul.

by Tim S. on Dec 14, 2010 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

no, hes not. hes more than that, just like wade and lebron are PGs but also more than that.

does designation really matter?

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

a designation of charge calls

you have to allow the offensive player a step, you can just randomly jump in front of an opponent for a charge, i think rose had already was already in the process of taking off when rush jumped in there…so it probably was a block. rose is (unfortunately?) the kind of player that tries to avoid these kind of contacts…so im thinking it should have been a block

This is just silly territory now

Rush wasn’t there when Rose started his move. That’s why it was a block and not a charge. Now Rose is supposed to anticipate that Rush is going to run under him and then lean backwards at a 45 degree angle. Where exactly do you bump a guy when your crotch is in his face anyway?

by runningman on Dec 14, 2010 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

It wasn't a block, dingus.

The foul was on Ford from behind.

I was at the game and they didn’t show replays.

by JockstrapNoah on Dec 14, 2010 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

if rush really wasnt there when rose was in flight then first, that sucks; and second

they really need to call those flagrant fouls; and third, the bulls need to tell the refs about this. kyle lowry did the same damn thing (and actually got the call for himself, the bastard) to rose in the last houston game i think. thats too dangerous a play not to be a flagrant.

And Wade got hurt going to the basket and drawing fouls

the same way Kobe gets hurt. The same way Lebron hurt that elbow.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 14, 2010 1:43 AM CST up reply actions

I actually think that is on the Pacers, in a roundabout way.

rose was just going to do what he always does. Jump has high as he can and squeeze through the tiniest of holes. People forget the foul was actually called on tJ Ford. Even if Ford didn’t push Rose that much, at that speed, it makes a difference. I believe that if Ford doesn’t push him, Rose slides by Rush, and there’s no foul, no injury.
.
MY problem is as much with Rose even making that play to begin with it as it islaunching himself through the air. Why? Even if it’s not drawing a foul, why not just make a step-back jumper?

and, honestly, in that situation, until you can fall safely from that height, you shouldn't go up that high.

and, honestly, in that situation, until you can fall safely from that height, you shouldn’t go up that high.

You make it sound like Rose knew beforehand he was going to try and draw a charge yet jumped anyway. I assume he jumped so high because he was trying to score…

by Stacey_Is_King on Dec 14, 2010 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

It’s easy to go through the thought process now, but Rose’s first instinct is to drive, and despite his vastly improved perimeter game, it’s still his strength. He plays so fast, no way he can register all that in the blink of an eye.

by dakoose on Dec 14, 2010 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

no, and at this young age, you're right.

But people are acting like he didn’t do anything wrong. There might be a reason for it, or an excuse, but it was wrong. You’re up 13 with two minutes left. Don’t put yourself in position to get hurt. Or increase the chances dramatically, anyway.

And no, he can’t think it through in the blink of an eye, but he can think it through prior to the posession: “We’re winning by 13, just get a decent shot up with under 2 minutes left at about 5 seconds on the shot clock.” If your’e saying he shouldn’t consider something like that, you don’t want intelligent basketball.

when the defender is beat is a good shot? It was a great shot until rush jumped under him.

by Onyx1191 on Dec 15, 2010 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

Well, I did mean that facetiously.

Or whatever. My point is: why was he trying to score in a dangerous manner? He should, and I have no doubt he will, when your team is up 13 with two minutes left, you don’t need to try and do the spectacular, or even take any chance. What’s the worst that can happen on a jumpshot? You miss? And if you jump 4 ft in the air? Well…

I don;t think knowing how to fall is the problem, it's just that he puts himself in these situations at times

when drives a little wildly to the basket. Sometimes you just have to go in and fake a little bit. You shouldn’t have to get murdered to get to the free throw line

Wow.

Quite a reaction from more or less a throw away comment.

His head is down, and he’s breaking his fall with his arms stretched out. You’re not supposed to do either of those things.
That said he is really really high up in the air, which kind of changes things. I suppose if he rolled to his left or right he could have fucked up shoulder or elbow or something.

this is some time to flush out some creative observations here.

Tajy, Hibby and Posey looks like they’re syncing with the music of “club can’t even handle me right now” while Rush looks like he’s sitting/hovering on an invisible low toilet trying to disperse the whole corn cob he ate before the game and Rose looks…like….he…is…diving. um

why when game was over

Personally not sure why he choose to drive so hard to basket at that point in the game. Think it was like 2 mins left with about a ten point lead in a game they had total control of, just shoot a J and play D, no reason to launch yourself at basket to draw foul at all at that point, especially after rolling your ankle

hope he’s okay
