ESPN is so dumb

On the front page it says “Winning isn’t everything. John Hollinger rates the strength of each NBA team’s performance.”

Right, because coming on top of John Hollinger’s power rankings will get you some stripes. I feel like this was specifically done to give more hype to Miami. That way it creates some stupid debate that, OMG Miami is ranked first but the Lakers have a perfect record!

Well

What articles, blogs, and stories does ESPN promulgate that aren’t meant to foment rancorous debate? That’s sort of how they buttress their bottom-line.

correct

No matter what position Miami would fall in ESPN would have spinned it as such.

i like how the heat are the top ranked team

yet they only won one game against a playoff team, the rest of their wins are against teams that were at the bottom of the league last season and are below .500 this season. theyve had a pretty easy start

Their SOS is .595. That's a 49 win team. The rankings are based on a formula using results from this season

Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?

The 49 win team...

is the equivalent of who the Heat have played thus far.

The Heat have played 7 games and the record of those 7 opponents equals a .595 winning percentage. That would mean the teams they have played would win an average of 48.79 games over the course of a season.

The Bulls opponents have a SOS of .556 which would translate to playing a 45 win team.

by CubFan81 on Nov 9, 2010 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

which means the heat went 5-2 against a 49-win team

the bulls went 3-3 against a 46-win team
houston went 1-6 against a 56-win team, with a margin of loss of less than 1 pt.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

pretty much everything Hollinger writes is bullshit.

I wonder how many times hes sits in is dimly lit home office contriving the ‘next big thing’ in stats, like some kind of mad scientist drunk off the feeling of power only abbreviations and use of the % sign can provide, only to be thwarted by the fact that what he is working on is fucking stupid because the numbers don’t add up, wishing things like confidence, drive, attitude, character, behavior, pressure, energy, momentum and team moral didn’t exist.

“Oh Miami, why have you forsaken meeee!! you should have won 73 games, and won playofff games by simply comatosing your opponents in a state of bedazzlement by the virtue of your stats alone! It just cannot be!!!”

Heat (5-2...now 5-3) are first, Suns (3-8) are 8th and Rockets (1-5) are 9th

ESPN has such a stranglehold over people’s perceptions of the NBA it’s redamndiculous.

His system is meaningless until week 4 or 5...

Based on the way he uses SOS and point differential to help determine the rankings. There just isn’t a big enough sample size yet to accurately measure how good teams are yet. I don’t think his rankings are that bad after the season gets going.

for example, I’m guessing Golden State doesn’t end up with a .714 winning percentage… and I’m guessing NO and LA will not be undefeated by the end of the year. And Minnesota probably won’t lose all their games by 15 points… OK maybe that could happen!
