5 years, ~$60 million, per Sam. Some much needed good news after the Boozer ordeal. Seems like a fair price to me.

Yay for good news...

i’ve been bummed ALL day since the Boozer news. I’m happy with the contract as well after hearing the 5 year 70 mil rumors

after the boozer injury i dont think the trade was going to happen anyways

maybe thats why the bulls completed the extension….OR, maybe noah realized that he should sign the extension before he gets injured.

by K_yle33 on Oct 3, 2010 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

My guess is that they offered 5/55, and he wanted 5/60, but they wouldn’t offer it until they knew they wouldn’t trade him for Melo.

by cubbybear on Oct 4, 2010 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I raised the point in the Boozer thread...

whether Boozer’s injury would impact Noah’s contract negotiation. It looks like it may have.

by bryield on Oct 3, 2010 8:41 PM CDT reply actions

But wouldn't his injury be more likely for the FO

to go with Noah’s original request, instead of him lowering it?

by Stacey_Is_King on Oct 3, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah - K_yle33 might be on the right track in the comment above.

Noah may have been motivated to accept the Bulls offer after Boozer’s injury. Or, they could have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

by bryield on Oct 3, 2010 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

KC:
The exact amount of the extension is unknown but believed to be in the $11 million range annually. Incentives can take the deal higher, and a source said the inclusion of these incentives represented the breakthrough in negotiations.

Would think games or minutes played

Would have to be a big part of it. I imagine there is an all-star bonus / playoff bonus of some sort too, but I think they are more worried about him playing at all than playing at an all-star level.
I think most players have the other bonuses once you get to the bigger contracts, so I don’t think those would have been the hang up.

by Grinder in Training on Oct 4, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

How typical are incentives in player contracts?

Obviously, the Memphis and Xavier Henry situation comes to mind, and I think I remember Nate Robinson getting a “salary bonus” if his team made the players (or something like that). I just wonder if this is common.

by bryield on Oct 3, 2010 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Most contracts have some kind of performance clause or rewards based on milestones.

And I think most teams award playoff bonuses.

There was never any indication from the team that they were really interested in Carmelo. At this point just listen to Sam Smith; if he says it isn’t happening, it just isn’t.

You obviously haven't thought much about this signing.

Why would this in any way prevent the Bulls from making a deal for Melo? In fact, now that he’s locked in, the team that trades for him has insurance that he’ll be sticking around.

by dakoose on Oct 4, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

He's a Poison Pill Player now. It makes him very, very difficult to trade.

Larry Coon FAQ with an appropriate example

If a team trades an extended rookie between the date his extension is signed and the date it takes effect, his “trade value” for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the scale contract and each year of the extension. This is called the poison pill provision. The sending team uses the player’s actual salary when calculating their outgoing salary. They use the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary.

Here is an example of a poison pill calculation: Carmelo Anthony earns $4,694,041 in 2006-07, the final year of his rookie scale contract. Prior to October 31, 2006 he signed a five year extension (bringing the total seasons to six) for the maximum salary, with the maximum 10.5% raises. Anthony’s actual salary will not be determined until July 2007, when the maximum salary amounts for 2007-08 are set. During the 2006-07 season the 2006-07 maximum is assumed for the 2007-08 season ($13,762,775), and the salary in subsequent seasons is based on this amount ($15,070,550, $16,378,325 and $17,686,100, respectively). If Anthony is traded during the 2006-07 season, then his outgoing salary from the Nuggets’ perspective is his actual salary of $4,694,041. His incoming salary from the other team’s perspective would be $13,518,358 — the average of his 2006-07 salary and the assumed salaries in the extension.

Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?

Poison Pill players can be traded however.

Last one that comes to mind is Devin Harris, and it usually only happens with high salary players. (Al Jefferson was traded the same way to Minny too I believe.) At any rate, being PPP doesn’t serve any real purpose other than to make a trade more difficult.

In short, the Bulls knew that and that’s why they signed Noah to the extension. They aren’t trading him.

45 if Noah missed just half as many games. Either way, we lose Boozer, but I still think this team sans Booz is better than last years(Derrick/Joakim/Taj improvements as well as an actual coach and defensive scheme).

In boston when kg went down they were forced to change their game and run instead of setting halfcourt plays every play. I don’t think it’ll ever come to “here’s the ball derrick. Go” that’s vinny not thibs. Thibs will just tailor the offense to what it was like boston without kg imo

It sounds like a good deal for the Bulls.

If anything, he’s underpaid. If the hard cap rumors are true, its going to be hard to fit all the pieces together nicely, so the smaller the pieces are, the better.

Call me crazy, but I think this Boozer thing can be a blessing in disguise

I think this team is good enough to win without him. As we stand right now, we’re better than we were at the end of last season. The only difference is they won’t have to live up to all the off season hype. They can kinda sneak under the radar with a ready made excuse. To me, this all comes down to Rose. If he is as good as everyone expects him to be, I don’t see this affecting our win-loss record all that much. One, maybe two wins. If he can’t live up to the hype, things could be worse. The Noah signing was great news all around. So I don’t think today was all that bad. (unless you’re a member of the Bears offensive line)

Ok fuckface, why the is it so important that readers think the “acrimony” was “overblown”?

The deal also will put to rest the overblown Carmelo Anthony trade rumors.

I know I can’t write for shit, but I think I can still say with some authority that KC is absolute garbage. He’s turned into a complete company man. Every other gd word is “source”, he doesn’t even bother writing, he just spits out the shit that’s fed to him on a silver platter.

By my count, he used the word source(s) 4 times in that short, worthless report (Plus two “overblowns”), which read more like a Bulls puff piece. At this point I think he’s just warming Sam Smith’s seat til he decides to call it quits. If being a total suck-ass is what qualifies as good reporting these days, count me as one person that isn’t too excited about the future.
