Around SBN: Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant's Post-Game 5 Outfits

Per KC:There's still time, but don't be surprised if Keith Bogans supplants projected starter Brewer at shooting guard for the Oct. 27 opener in Oklahoma City.

"I don't think Ronnie's comfortable yet with the defense or offense," Thibodeau said. "That will come as he plays more.

"It's not only who is going to start, it's who fits better with what group. I don't know if Ronnie will be better with the starters or bench guys. I like the energy he brings. I like Keith's toughness. Ronnie is more of a slasher. Keith is more of a spot-up 3-point shooter. Their strengths are different, but they're both good players."

And this tidbit was very interesting.

Thibodeau said his regular-season rotation would be "eight or nine players."

Thibs is right.

Brewer isn’t a good fit with the first unit. I think he’s better off the bench pairing with Korver.

Deng/Boozer/Noah: All your rebound are belong to us.

8 or 9

Rose
Noah
Deng
Boozer
Bogans
Korver
Watson
Brewer
Gibson
Asik/Thomas

That’s 10/11.

I'm guessing he wasn't counting Boozer

Which would seem to leave Thomas as the odd man out, given how much Asik’s been playing with the starters in the preseason. In any case, no Scal so yay!

Pat Riley is the devil.

yeah, not sure

i’d think of those bogans and thomas are the ones on the fringe. but then bogans is the starter??? i’m also thinking his total doesn’t count boozer.

but it does reassure me no scalabrine so… it makes me feel better lol. :D

Korver is better on offense than Bogans is on defense.

isnt it more logical to put ur worst defensive player in with your best defensive group

rather than leave him more vulnerable by putting him in with other subs who can’t help him as much

Or we can just wait for Thibs to realize his mistake 2 weeks in, whatever.

Perhaps Korver is more productive

running around screens with a defender already winded.

I’d rather he start.

IM begining to be fine with bogans starting

While korver is the better shooter, and brewer is the better defender…bogans seems to supply an adequate ammount of both defense and awesome, i know people have talked about korver being okay on defense (and he really is) but he is still pretty slow laterally, and i dont think hes really had a good test in terms of defending a quicker 2 guard, while bogans is primarily known for his defense. With boozer being out, i would like to add more offense to our starting unit by adding korver, but Thibs has mentioned that he doesnt want to shake things up much in terms of starting lineups, so i dont think hes gonna yank korver and taj just cuz boozer comes back.

The way i see it, thibs can use bogans to start off with and judging by what we need he can make the appropriate subs in korver and brewer. If defense is needed, put in brewer, if offense is needed put it korver. This also allows him to sub both bogans and deng at the same time, or sub deng for either brewer or korver, without losing much of a step.

Bogans has been pretty solid, a good defender and a good shooter to space the floor, As long as he can hit open shots (which kirk couldnt do last year) its pretty fine. Its pretty much how bab-bass said it was with bogans…hes a solid player

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

i tend to agree.

Korver is more of an outside threat and everyone knows it, so defenders wont slouch off him to pack the lane for Rose, else they pay the price. I could see them going off of Bogans more

by Onyx1191 on Oct 19, 2010 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

While I'm not big on starting Bogans...

Watson
Brewer
Korver
Gibson
Asik

… would be a pretty nice 2nd unit to trot out there when everyone’s healthy.

I really hope we never see these five on the court at the same time all season unless the Bulls are kicking someone’s ass

If you look at it this way, it makes sense..

We already know Bogans plays better D than Korver, and you always want your best defender on the court to start the game, if possible.

Thibs has preached that he wants an inside/out, unselfish team. The offense, so far, has looked to have 3 basic components to it: 1) Constant Motion / Cutting / Off-Ball Screening; 2) High Post Games; 3) Dribble Penetration / Drive and Kick; in no specific order.

To make this offense run efficiently you need: a distributor, a slasher, a shooter, a big man w / j, Big man for screening. Now not every person has to fit only one category, but I’m going to list them in order of strengths (this is my perception of their strengths, no stats, just eyeball test)

The 1st Unit(when everyone is healthy) with Bogans in it, would look like this:
PG D.Rose — distributor, slasher, shooter main scorer
SG Bogans — shooter
SF Deng — slasher, shooter, big man w/ j
PF Boozer — big man w/ j, big man for screening, distributor main scorer
C Noah — Big man for screening, distributor

The 2nd Unit:
PG Watson — slasher, shooter, distributor
SG Brewer — slasher, distributor
SF Korver — shooter, slasher, distributor main scorer
PF Gibson — big man for screening, big man w/ j
C Asik — big man for screening

The lineups look pretty even which is a great thing, and it allows Thibs to sub in for offensive boost or defensive boosts. If he was good enough to start for the Spurs over Manu, I have no problem with him starting here over Korver.

While it's obviously not that cut-and-dried, it makes sense to analyse it like that.

I would guess that backups spend a large percentage of the time playing with other backups, moreso than starters do. And either way, it’s particularly relevant when talking about Korver. We need him out there basically whenever Rose and Boozer aren’t on the court; who else is going to create offense? And when Rose and Boozer aren’t on the court, it really doesn’t matter who else is on—that’s a second unit.

by msquared10 on Oct 19, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

this is what i hate about this

Korver basically will be doubled whenever he has the ball if rose and boozer arent in the game with him. in the orlando game when he was in with that 2nd unit he couldnt get a shot off becuz they doubled him. Playing him with all subs is a bad idea

by krypto22 on Oct 20, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

One thing different this year compared to last

We don’t have Vinny and Luol Deng is actually saying beyond the arc and is a threat to shoot.

Last year the 3pt threat in the starting five was Salmons and nobody else. He shot poorly to open the season and it hurt us. Then the bench was Hinrich.

This year it’s Bogans who is a modest threat from downtown, but Deng is much improved. The bench threat is Korver who led the league in 3PT% last year.

Starting with defense doesn’t alarm me. Certainly not with Thibs making that his primary focus anyway of a winning team.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

I don’t have a problem with Bogans starting. We need a proven scorer on the 2nd unit and Korver def. fits the bill.

At this point, with everything that's been going on,

I’ll be happy if Mickey Mouse starts. I am excited for the season to start. I have a feeling that whoever starts (and whoever is healthy enough) will be fired up and ready to go and will be a great asset. Waiting 6 months for a meaningful game is a long time, wouldn’t you folks agree?
