The Bulls could've traded for Stoudemire last season, but opted not to. He's certainly on their radar and discussions between now and the Feb. 18 trade deadline will take place. However, to label him the Bulls' top priority is overstating matters.

Lots from KC Johnson and Mike McGraw today on Stoudemire, Hinrich, Jefferson, etc. -ed.

That's bull.

I hate Bulls beat writers cuz they are brainwashed by the org and their reports are an attempt to pacify fans. “We could’ve gotten Amare, but JJ, Taj, and the opportunity to land a max FA mean more.”
The truth. We couldn’t have got him cuz our current players suck. The only guy that might’ve gotten a deal done (Deng) was hurt. Let’s hope this blown smoke clears things up.

how about this nugget?

http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/3320

The Bulls have been looking to add another guard for a few weeks and had serious discussions about signing Sundiata Gaines to a 10-day contract before he joinedd Utah. Gaines is the rookie guard from Georgia who drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat the Cavs a couple weeks ago.

Good job Bulls! ‘seriously’ considered signing a guy people know heard of!

Maybe they knew

STAT was hurt, I mean wasn’t it one game after the deadline or so that he sat the rest of the year….that kind of info the beat writer’s never add…..and to me seems a logical conclusion because we know after the summer that BG and TYrus weren’t in our plans and likely would have been included in a trade to Phx….with a pick (JJ).

Cmon

Dont you see the brilliance in overpaying Pargo this year? Now after he lights up the Lithuanian Basketball Association, he’ll stay loyal to us and sign with us over the t-wolves.

And resigning Gray to set up the blockbuster trade for Devin Brown? That just proves that somebody up there has tremendous foresight.

Oh he did?

I thought he got poked in the eye early in the year and it bothered him to the point he sat which just happened to be after the deadline.

yeah i think it was a re-injury

including a new tear in his retina or whatever that made it worse than before. i can’t remember exactly.

needless to say he was supposed to wear goggles the whole season last season and didn’t, and ended up with that injury, heh.

The way KC writes it

it’s like I’m running the trades. Adding Amare to Rose, Gordon, Deng, Noah, Hinrich, and Noc would have been quite a roster for a playoff push.

If we only had D’Antoni too that would be one awesome offensive roster.

they have to already be a contender, and he’d then pay.

KC's wording is weird

“Could’ve traded for but opted not to.” It makes it sound like the deal was on the table and we just said “Nah, no Amare.”

But it could just mean “Amare was on the trading block”.

According to McGraw
In the same scenario last year, Phoenix was interested in a package of Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha for Stoudemire but also wanted multiple first-round picks, according to a league source, and the Bulls passed.

The Suns had Shaq and Robin Lopez last year.

two #1s is pretty outrageous anyway. Doug’s right that they would’ve likely just used Gooden as the cap filler.

When you put it that way, it's really depressing.

We could have given them Tyrus (who is benched), Taj (who is mediocre at best), James Johnson (who is terrible and doesn’t look very promising), Drew Gooden (LOL), and Thabo (who sucks) for Amare Stoudemire and we didn’t do it? Fucking seriously?

The difference, to me, is when I say liberated fan

I mean, I have no vested interested in any one team. A bandwagon fan, on the other hand, is someone who switches allegiances from team to team when things get bad for their current team. I think there’s much more shame in jumping from team to team than just appreciating the league as a whole, but at the end of the day, it’s just a game and if you get maximum entertainment / enjoyment value out of jumping from team to team then more power to you.

Um, there's a very good possibility that Rose

is never as good as Nash, tyger. Nash has been one of the top 3 PGs in the league for the last half of this decade. At his peak, few have been better.

It’s tough to compare them because they are totally different players, but guys that shoot around 50/40/90 and set up their teammates for approximately a zillion dunks or wide open threes a game are incredibly valuable.

So far all Rose has shown himself consistently capable of is volume scoring.

I have to hope Rose hits that level. He is more talented already than Nash ever was….but Nash is just so fantastic on O…

Sadly....through thick and thin....

by majoyenrac on Jan 27, 2010 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

He's not really more talented for the position

Nash is an ambidexterous freak who has probably the best court vision in the league. Rose’s doesn’t even come close. Court vision is a real talent.

Rose has more physical gifts than Nash, but Nash’s talents are actually more pertinent to winning basketball. Setting teammates up incredibly well, spacing the floor, making a high percentage of all of his looks are all things that directly correlate with winning basketball.

All Rose’s “talents” have allowed him to do is to be a scorer who scores inefficiently. He can and will get better, but using “talent” the way you’ve done it discounts a lot of what makes Nash great.

by majoyenrac on Jan 27, 2010 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

Rose is creeping towards an 18 PER right now

and he’s still not even that efficient. If he starts shooting threes (like he slowly is the last couple of games) and making them, as well as shooting free throws more, then wow…look out. I wouldn’t be surprised if in year three or four he was putting up a 23+ PER and all of the sudden sneaks up on superstar status with the way his jumpshot is looking lately (and if he gets some real players around him this summer who will help up his assist totals).

by Illini15 on Jan 27, 2010 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see that. Sure he has a chance

but he came into the league playing some of the worst defense I’ve ever seen. He’s been better this year, but not a whole lot.

He’d have to really, really turn it around 180 degrees to be a plus defender.

Hinrich knows how to...

and there’s a film room. This has definitely been gone over in practice. The information is available, and had been made available to Derrick. Arguing that nobody told him how to defend the PnR, is a poor argument and assumes all kind of crazy things.

The truth is that it’s Derrick’s fault he’s a poor defender. Yes, he can improve, but that has to come from inside.

Oh no, the Bulls could have got expirings last year but turned them down.

Because you know, they knew Hinrich was more valuable than expiring contracts, to the Bulls or other teams.

Blake + Outlaw* for Hinrich

Brian Cardinal + Madsen or Craig Smith for Hinrich

Both turned down by the Bulls, iirc.

*the ultimate flexibility – didn’t both have team options for this season, meaning the Bulls could dump them for Gordon or keep them for one year more, expiring this season.

The Bulls can’t add any more salary because of the luxury tax, and Hinrich for Vujacic/Morrison would add $700k and put us over. Either we add Pargo, or we add Pargo and James Johnson with the Lakers adding Farmar.

Vujacic plays some point guard, so we should be fine there.

by YaoPau on Jan 27, 2010 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

The point doesn’t really matter. They play Shannon Brown at the point. Vujacic isn’t playing because Brown is a much better defender with explosive talent on the offensive end without the basketball.

But I see the same in D-League talent as well. We just need outside shooters that defenders cannot leave.

Right, proposing a trade that later gets RUMORED is hardly a novel thing.

What I don't understand, though, is why not get him if you can shed even a little salary this year or next year.

If you don’t like him, just renounce his Bird Rights in the summer.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

You are on to something here...

If the Bulls could Amare + filler for Tyrus + Salmons + expirings + filler and a first rounder…

Amare gets a two month try-out with the team, if he is a good fit, the Bulls have the Bird Rights to sign him first…if he is not a good fit, they still retain Bird Rights to sign and trade for someone who may be a better fit (Bosh) or is not a free agent…or as you said, they could renounce his rights…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

he’s also like salmons in that sense, except for a whole lotta $$$$ more. $17.7mil. if he doesn’t “gel” in those two months, and/or doesn’t get a max offer feedback on the agent’s “feelers”, he could force that $$$$ commitment from his new team. like boozer did.

still a no-brainer?

he could

a) get injured.
b) take a chance in 2011, with fewer competing free agents.
c) not get a team to give him the max. (doubt this one, ’cause some team like nj surely would?)

For real.

The “goal” is to make the playoffs this season and clear cap space for the off-season, right? Why not just use him as a damn good rental? If we don’t want to pay him the max – which I’m fine with – bring him aboard for the “playoff push” and then say peace out and renounce his rights. Big whoop.

You could convince Bosh to come

to Chicago, Amare might want to hook up w/ Colangelo again, and in Toronto he’ll be the man like he always wanted, do a sign-and-trade sending Amare to Toronto and Bosh to Chicago, but a lot would have to fall the Bulls way, and the organization doesn’t think like this.

We will get a top tier FA in 2010 This is not 2000.

We did not have a “team on the rise” with Rose, Noah and Dengnin 2000. That is a big difference between now and then. Worst case scenario we sign STAT or Boozer this off-season and make a trade for a SG or draft one. Best case is we sign Bosh or Wade and can do a sign and trade for either Johnson or Boozer depending on who we sign.

You are a pessimist dawg.

The only other competition for us this off-season is the Miami and the players own teams. Who really wants to play for New Jersey? Real GM just released an article about them trying to make a trade because they know they wont get a top 2010 FA. The Knicks suck and who wants to play in Sota?

The Clippers are infamous for sucking, but might have a shot at someone like Gay at best and could be a good team. Miami will only be able to re-sgin Wade and one other top FA, probably Bosh or Boozer. That leaves us will plenty to choose from.

If Salmons stays he will opt out, their will be a new CBA in 2011 and will probably be a lockout why would he opt-in to not receive a pay check? He or Kirk will be dealt by the deadline anyway.

I take two things away from this and it's simple and obvious

1) Amare is likely number 5 on their wish list this summer. So they care enough to throw an offer out there or two, but really couldn’t care less if the Suns trade him somewhere else. They can say they tried (when in all reality means they did, but not hard). It’s good enough to keep fans’ mouths wet till summer.

2) They value Kurt dearly . . . in their hearts, just not in their plans. I think they honestly believe (and no one can blame them) that with 2 special talents like Rose and Noah, they could continue to tread water and end up with a respectable record, enticing enough to attract the main players on their wish list.

by Option27 on Jan 27, 2010 1:28 PM CST reply actions

This should be the plan as unrealistic as it maybe be...

1.Lebron
2. Wade
3. Johnson
4. Bosh
5. Amare

If the best player in the game in a FA and you have money you have to make a play for him. That should be the goal. At least try your best. There are better fall back options this time around so the risk isn’t as steep if they fail.

Plus I don’t think MJ is going to taint the waters.

No chance that happens.
William (Peoria, IL)

Come on…NO chance of Lebron picking Chicago this summer? If they are able to move Hinrich or Salmons before the deadline, why wouldn’t they be one of the top 3 options for Lebron? They’ve deffinitely got the best supporting cast to surround him with. Bonafide number 2 all-star? Check. Hard working, hustling, defensive minded, floor sprinting big man? Check. Floor spreading shooter? Well, Deng can be automatic from midrange, but they lack a pure long range shooter…but that can be found almost anywhere. And they are all YOUNG. Zero chance? Really?

And all throughout Thorpe’s just been negative, negative, negative on Rose. I frankly don’t get it. Rose is humble (check), ridiculously athletic (check), and competes his ass off (check) for chrissakes, he tied the rookie record for first playoff game scoring, not against some crapshoot of a team, but against the defending champs, who even without KG were better than the hurt Wade team we faced a few years earlier (and swept).

I'm wrong...

They get a 5% raise.

A free agent’s maximum salary in the first year of a new contract is never less than 105% of his salary in the last year of his previous contract. For example, a ten-year veteran free agent who most recently earned $20 million has a maximum salary of $21 million, even if that is above the league-wide maximum. A free agent does not need to remain with the same team in order to receive 105% of his previous salary, although the team that signs him is subject to the same salary cap restrictions as with any other free agent.

Doug is right.

by kingj41 on Jan 27, 2010 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

The 10.5% raise

is the max raise based on the 1st year’s value of the contract when you sign with the team that has your bird rights.

By all means they should do what they have to do to keep him with Rose but if the right offer comes up I would be fine with them moving him. What that deal is though… I have no idea.

I am all for keeping Noah.

He could be a Starting Center on a contending team. He brings energy works on his game (proof by improving FT% this year) and rebounds/blocks like a beast. I think we build around Rose and keep Noah at least for a couple more years. Most important I like watching him play and the intensity he brings to the table.

The truth of the matter is I don’t think someone is going to trade a star to us that hinges on Noah. Of course if an offer comes by that is lopsided in favor of us that includes him of course we take it. But those offers don’t happen often at all with the exception for the Lakers and Pau Gasol.

Rose is far better than Bibby now and probably better than Bibby was even back when Bibby was fantastic.

Johnson’s still solid.

Deng’s a tough matchup especially as the 3rd option he should be

Lee’s all hustle and solid on O.

We would at least lead the league in rebohnds.

With JJ and Taj comong off the bench we would have a good team, but we would need some help at the G spot from the bench. to get Johnson and Lee would force to trade Kirk and Salmons to afford both players. I thik Lee will command at least 8-10 mill a year.

Insight into the 'Dorf's thinking:
I spoke with one executive about Amare Stoudemire and was told that, the way owners are talking now, Stoudemire wouldn’t even get a five-year contract worth $60 million under the next CBA. That sounded crazy to me, but when I spoke with a team owner an hour later, he made the executive sound tame.

"The owners are really going to chop the money down,’’ the owner said. "I think Stoudemire would get $5 or $6 million [annually] in the next deal. The bottom line is that things are going to change dramatically.’’

I mean, that’s obviously the ’Dorf right? It has to be.

I'd hope so, because it's a pretty stupid way of doing business.

As for the NBA, there is no perfect answer. Make all contracts incentive-laden and players will be out gunning for stats. Partially guarantee or hold them to completely non-guaranteed contracts where teams can just freely cut players gives all the power to one side. I’m not an expert, just think the players deserve the chance to get paid as much as they can attain considering they’re the ones putting in all the work.

http://www.blogabull.com/2010/1/27/1272015/more-incentive-for-salmons-to-opt

But the Owners do have a point that salaries are not jiving with revenues. The problem with that is that they’re the ones handing out these friggin’ salaries.

They could stop guaranteed contracts right now by not giving out guaranteed contracts. Drew Gooden had an unguaranteed one this season, for instance. They have to ‘protect themselves from themselves’ instead.

The problem isn't so much that they have to save themselves from themselves

as it is that when operating in a market that permits guaranteed contracts, the incentive will always be to give a guaranteed deal, so long as there is more than one bidder for a given player’s services. If one team is offering you a non-guaranteed deal and the other a guaranteed deal, you’re going to sign with the guaranteed deal every single time. So the incentive is always to give those deals if you ever want to sign anyone, ever. But, if you agree as a coalition in a binding way (the CBA) that guaranteed deals are not permitted, then the players can’t get the owners to bid against each other.

It's not dumbassery in the moment, though. That's my point.

You have to sign guys and in order to do that, you have to make them competitive offers. When you have competition in that way, it leads people to bid up on things like guaranteed versus non-guaranteed contracts. The only way to get rid of the heavy incentive to do that is to remove the temptation to bid on that aspect of the contract in the first place.

Collusion is when all the competitors in the market make an agreement to not compete on certain terms (like price)

But that is, by definition, what must happen when you empower a single ownership group and labor group to negotiate a contract.

That is, by the way, the “Anti-trust exemption” you hear about with regard to sports. If you are going to allow a labor union, which is effectively a collusive attempt by workers, it’s established legal principle that the companies they negotiate must, almost by necessity, also be allowed to negotiate as a group.

To prevent collusion amongst the owners, the NBAPA could decertify itself as a union, which would effectively demolish the whole system and force each team to deal with each player individually with no caps and whatnot.

In many respects, that possibility is the players’ nuclear option if the owners get too crazy.

In fact, there will be no upward limit on it. They’d go back to the days of no rookie salary scale for draft picks, which will lead to absurdities like Danny Ferry sitting out and then signing a 10 year deal. Despite sucking ass.

That sort of thing will be disastrous for owners. I kind of hope it happens.

The owners are kind of full of shit

Something that doesn’t get mentioned at all in these articles is the BRI and escrow system. Yes, salaries for individual players can increase by 10.5% a year, but remember that players’ salaries actually have a 10% chunk that goes into an escrow account and gets returned to ownership (in equal chunks via revenue sharing) if the total salary amount exceeds 57% basketball related income (BRI).

Last year, the players returned $191.4M to the league, so if I understand that correctly, every player actually made 9% less than his contracted amount and the Bulls got a check for $6.4M.

by Sports2 on Jan 27, 2010 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

One more reason to hate 'Dorf. Unfortunately, though, there

are still tons of teams losing money even though they get that excess over 57% of BRI. Basically, the product isn’t drawing enough revenue. It’s not really the fault of the players, the league is as good as it’s been in a long time, but the demand for the good they are selling is dropping so they have to tighten up their belts like everyone else.

At that point, however, Billy Hunter can say

“Look, if you have a hard limit on player revenues and you can’t make money in places like Indianapolis, move your team or fold it”.

(I take Indy as an example because I live here and I know the Pacers are somewhat strong-arming the city. I’ve looked into it and i think if the Pacers had been well run, they’d have made plenty of money. I’m not actually sure they haven’t made money anyway).

If the Bulls dump both Kirk and Salmons we would still have about 6 mill under the cap, which we could absorb in a sign and trade for say Lee. If a player wants to sign somwhere else and they are a unrestricted FA the team pretty much have to accept the trade and get dicked.

The Bulls need to offer Deng, Tyrus and a 1st rounder to the Suns for STAT and J. Collins.

Then make STAT sign an extension. The ship Hinrich, Miller and Pargo to the Rockets for T-Mac and Lowry. That way we still complete for a playoff spot this year and have maximum cap space for next year.

Then we would only have to focus on Joe Johnson or D-Wade. Or we could try to ship Deng to the Kings for K-Mart and focus on a perimeter player this off-season.
