Of course the first rule of negotiation is to ask for more than you expect to get, but assuming that a lockout and significant salary cuts are in order, it would certainly behoove John Salmons to opt out and take what he can get now - as opposed to after the CBA negotiations.

I’d love to see them change into a more NFL style contract. They should have to earn their keep. Money motivates. You take it away from them they’ll have to perform if they want it. Sounds good to me.

No way.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I think there needs to be a happy medium

NFL players have way too little security, and NBA players have way too much.

Yeah, if the NBA needs one thing it's for people like Donald Sterling and Chris Cohan to have even more power.

The typical "rule" is to always expect a player to opt out.

It’s almost always better to get more guaranteed years, even if at a slight discount, than for one year. Your total guaranteed money is then more. Of course, if a player is old, playing terrible and people can write off a few good seasons as a fluke…

But most players opt out.

Isn't that what happened to Bonzi Wells?

No one wanted him and little by little he disappeared.

bonzi

got a long term contract offer from the kings and he turned them down, ending up getting “screwed” since no one else cared to give him what the kings offered.

Just like Sprewell with the Wolves

I remember him turning down 3 years $21 million because he has to “feed his family”. After that he was out of the league.

Joakim on whether he ever tried tennis: "I played a little bit. If anybody on the Bulls wanted to play me, I would kick their ass."

Name a source Broussard! Just once!

All of this sounds like total bs. If the owners really, firmly believe they can get Amare’s value down to $6 mil a year, there won’t be an NBA for a couple years.

I think he asked Doug "Deng at $4m a season" Thonus :-D

oh oh

Jerry must be thinking “why sign a max player in 2010 when I can save 2 million a year signing a max player in 2011…season tickets will be sold out as long as we have derrick rose”
