Aaron Gray dealt to Hornets for Devin Brown

According to Marc Stein, and Adrian Wojnarowski.

Solid nothing-for-something swap, Bulls need anyone to take (making said shots is a secondary goal) shots off the bench.

And since the Bulls are so close to the tax line, this matters: Sham lists Brown having a 10% trade kicker, which puts the Bulls a little over $200k more in 2009-10 committed salary.

We’re really thin in the backcourt, and this frees up Kirk or Salmons to leave. Moreover, Pargo’s just been unspeakably bad this year. Every moment he’s out there, he hurts us.

In spite of its recent improvement, Chicago has been looking for perimeter help to help fill the void created by Ben Gordon’s free-agent departure to Detroit.

Brown is averaging 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game this season. He’s averaged 7.9 points per game in eight seasons with five NBA teams.

This is definately like trading

a bag of poop for a bag of pee.

Jokes aside tho, I don’t think trading Gray was smart, especially with Noah trying to recover from plantar fascitis. Im no doctor, but after reading a little bit about it it seems that taking it easy this season would be a smart thing to do. Especially since big men are hard to find and most of them have foot problems because of their size. Noah, just added massive weight in a matter of 2 years which is hard to do especially while keeping his speed in tact. This guy runs! And that adds another factor to his importance to this team with Rose at point. Gray isnt the best, but keep him for the year or trade him for someone to take pressure off Noah. Im completely cool with Noah playing 1/2 of the rest to the games remaining so that he can be ready for the postseason. (and no Brad Miller is not enough)

Like im said, im no doctor but this trade baffles me. Of course, if we get a big man in a couple weeks, I will call the front office smart

The best part of this is we don't have to watch Pargo anymore.

Brown at least brings legit scoring punch off the bench. Pargo took shots (which he missed).

This is pretty much a win-win for us. Scoring off the bench with some 3 point range; expiring deal; no Pargo; clears the way for a trade of Salmons/Kirk; the deal expires; Gray wasn’t doing anything for us.

So…I’m geeked over getting Devin Brown.

There must be a support group for this.

I hated Aaron Gray.

I’ve never seen someone talk so much shit just for being on the same team as someone else who happened to do good. Whether it was Rose breakin’ Andre Miller’s ankles, Tyrus Thomas dunking on Jermaine O’Neal or something else*, that dude stared guys down despite doing absolutely nothing except being over 7 ft tall and 280 pounds.

*I’ll forgive whatever he was doing in the picture above because it’s against the Celtics.

You forgot too

That in his rookie year Boylan was smart and didn’t play him one time and he berated Boylan because he put all this work in and this was the reward or something like that….

And then they played him and save for that ridiculous game I think against the Pacers where it was like 149 to 139 or maybe it was the Bucks and nobody cared and Aaron had almost a 20-20 night, he was just a run waiting to happen—and I guess was a run that night…

A major deal has to be coming right?

The biggest problem with dumping hinrich (which I am apparently the only bulls fan that likes Kirk) or Salmons was the lack of depth at guard. Adding Brown at least gives us the opportunity not to demand a guard in return, right?

perhaps, shipping one of said guards north of the border for a center/pf type player?

by francisdurke on Jan 25, 2010 3:31 PM CST reply actions

I like Kirk

Piccolomair like’s Kirk….

We just need changes….I’m actually more for trading Deng (higher value, better player net something with an expiring in return) than just trade Kirk for crap and watch him regain his value….

Sadly....through thick and thin....

by majoyenrac on Jan 25, 2010 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

im kinda ready if kirk gets traded

its not gonna be a stab in the heart the way it wouldve been in years past (BG GOT KIKED TO FIRST B!^(#ES) ahem….however i believe the bulls want to, can, and most likely will land bosh ( i think he wants to be here as much as we want him here ) and in that sense i can see bosh taking up luols “space” on the floor…I think the bulls get rid of kirk and then add joe johnson, and to me thats lacking unless we do the al jefferson trade or something for a big man….i think its impossible to actually trade both kirk and deng, and if i had to choose one, i say get rid of the more expensive player who is probably gonna lose his “space” on the floor and have his skillsets duplicated by bosh or amare.

Of course if wade comes out and says "hey im considering leaving miami (doesnt even have say the name chicago) " then i say bye to kirk without hesitation (also any trade that gets rudy here) but i believe wade will stay in miami and lebron is going to new jersey, new york or staying in Cleavland….

Yeah

I don’t know about that….it’s strange they make a trade, but when they do it generally is for something…I mean last year we needed another big, they got it, we knew Deng wasn’t 100%, we filled that, and in the process brilliantly worked out a deal to take on a player the fans loved but who had a horrible contract that was getting worse by the minute….and 1 player who was hurt all year and hurt when we traded him and wasn’t nearly consistent enough to be counted on for us….

I suspect that Gray may have said something that prompted this trade

Maybe with Noah and Taj having Plantar, and Miller being 50, he asked if this meant he’d get some minutes. The Bulls told him no, so he asked for a trade.

Without the white flag, I’m not sure how i’ll know when a blowout is official any more.

Can Brown play PG? He’s 6’5 and seems to have alright dribbles. If he can’t play point, then this does nothing to help with getting rid of Hinrich. Devin is aggressive on defense, which makes up for being good at it, to a degree.

he sucks, its just true…the thing is…hes not pargo….and just for that fact hes worth it…its not so much about what brown can do ON the court, its about who he can keep OFF the court…and he can keep pargo off the court….i hope…

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!

How is it hyping up Brown

to say he’s better at everything than Pargo is? You pretty much just restated what I said.

And my reply was to someone who said Devin was horrible, and that’s the only exaggeration here. I said he’s slightly worse than Salmons this year, in what universe is that considered hyping up Devin?

by runningman on Jan 26, 2010 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

This is a great trade

This is a good guy, hard worker, nice shooter, and can create his own shot….in addition to that he is averaging close to 10ppg, thats higher than Taj Gibson 9p, Brad Miller8p, Tyrus Thomas7p, and Pargo so I say this guy is a contributer.

This trade could very well mean that Salmons is on the way out (possibly with Tyrus) in a bigger trade to come……we’ll see!

Is he gritty and tough too?

and a nice guy ? He better be all those things or Niel Funk is going to hate him. He also better not be short.

Why aren't more people talking about this as Salmons insurance?

This is fantastic news if it means we’ve got a deal lined up to dump Fish’s contract on someone. I’m excited to see what happens out of this.

by Illini15 on Jan 25, 2010 5:08 PM CST reply actions

This is what I thought as soon as I saw it. The Bulls big man depth isn't great

and for them to make a move for another rotation level wing and weaken their big depth immediately made me think they were planning another move. Either that or they at the very least want it to be an option without losing too much by salary dumping Salmons or Kirk.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

No, really. Kirk needs to GTFO. Trade his ass, GarPaxDorf.

by fundamentallysound on Jan 25, 2010 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

Nice. I just thought it was on that pretty much

the first 100 posts of this thread were Aaron Gray jokes, when as soon as I heard about this, all I could think was, “Wow, maybe Gar PaxDorf is actually posturing to dump Salmons?!?!” I’m intrigued to see what happens next, but if I were a betting man I would think at this point they are doing everything they can to get rid of Salmons for any type of expiring now that we have some passable insurance (yeah, Brown sucks, but he’s much better than Pargo getting those minutes). It’s also nice to see the Org. has recognized how bad Pargo is and this hopefully means we won’t see him on the court anymore unless it’s a massive blowout.

by Illini15 on Jan 25, 2010 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

If they could get the TWolves to bite on a straight up Cardinal for Salmons swap, that'd be a great deal.

Although I think Salmons makes a little less than Cardinal, so given the razor-thin luxury tax margin the Bulls are working on other players might need to be thrown in (I’m looking at you, Pargo or Lindsey).

But the Bulls are trying to make the playoffs

I don’t think they’re going to do a trade that obviously KOs their chances of making it.

by Sports2 on Jan 25, 2010 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

I honestly don't think Salmons is that valuable. I think if you plug in Devin Brown

for his minutes things drop off maybe a little, but they likely still make the playoffs.

Here’s the comparison for Salmons and Brown over this year.

Sure, Salmons is better, but is he so much better that you can’t plug Brown in and still make the playoffs? I’m not sure. The only other major issue and reason I could see the Bulls not doing it is because Salmons is playing much better now than he was at the beginning of the season, whereas Brown has dropped off from a relatively hot start for him. But they shouldn’t be fooled by a run of very good play from Salmons. He’s still the same guy he always was, he’s just as likely to go through another slump as Brown is to continue slumping. They are quite similar players, only Brown is a more natural SG than Salmons, which is where he’d be getting most of his minutes and where Salmons is currently playing out of position.

Their career numbers tell a similar story. Devin Brown is a shade below Salmons, but he’s a pretty good approximation of him at a much cheaper cost and so if you can deal Salmons for an expiring deal, then I think Brown makes Salmons much more expendable than he otherwise would be.

by fundamentallysound on Jan 26, 2010 2:42 AM CST up reply actions

I just think the context of those numbers are very different

Just like everyone on the Bulls got easier shots when playing with both Rose and Gordon, Devin Brown got better opportunities by playing with Chris Paul, and before that, Lebron.

So I acknowledge the stats, but i think they’re showing Salmons in the worst possible situation for him and the Best possible situation for Brown.

I agree that Brown makes Salmons more expendable, but I don’t know that the Bulls are going to take that sort of chance.

by Sports2 on Jan 26, 2010 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

by Rex Grossman on Jan 26, 2010 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Agree with all above - good trade but the real question is what is next?

I believe Devin Brown hit five 3 pointers in the New Orleans game December 26th against us IN THE FIRST HALF. That is about the same number of 3 pointers Pargo has hit all season. I was at the game and Brown was phenomenal. Sure that probably was a fluke but it is better than Pargo. An aside – Pargo and I am not exaggerating, hit 30 straight shots in practice that game and I would say 20 of them were three pointers. He gets in the game and clanks his first shot, a 15 footer.

The real issue now is what the next trade will be. My money says it is Salmons or Hinrich and this trade makes you suspicious it is Hinrich. It also appears Paxson is not giving up on the season. We give up nothing and get something – no way we lose on this one.

by chgobr on Jan 25, 2010 5:19 PM CST reply actions

He's hit the 3 at 29.8% since then (17/57)

But yes, better than Jannero – 15/56 on the season (26.8%).

One parting thought about Aaron Gray

Career Per36: 12.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.9 blocks, 49 FG%
Career PER: 12.4
Career TS%: .512
Career APM: -1.94

He’s not an NBA starter, and his general look and vibe was that of a stiff, but his numbers weren’t bad.

Now he goes to New Orleans, which is perfect for him. Slow paced team, great PG, a PF who can score, and nobody else close to 7’ tall. If he fails here, no more NBA Aaron Gray, but I think he’ll do alright for them.

by YaoPau on Jan 25, 2010 5:25 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Aaron Gray cannot score at the basket, this is a detrimental skill when one wants to play center in the NBA.

I actually think he’s a worse player for shedding some weight because the only reason he was able to use his post moves was because of his fat ass backing people down.

Could he conceivably play 5-10 minutes in spot duty? Sure, but then again there are a dozen D-Leaguers who are also capable of that opportunity at an even lesser cost.

He has a bit of a post game

49.2 FG% on close shots last year, better than Noah and Tyrus. I agree he’s not good at it, but with a better point guard, and West clearing out some room inside, who knows. Chris Paul turned Tyson Chandler into a 12ppg scorer.

I’ll go down as saying Gray has the talent to be a starting center in the league. Unfortunately he’s also got the talent to win professional eating competitions. He never really busted his ass and got in great shape.

I like this trade because it means that Kirk, Salmons or even Deng are gone.

I just hope the next trade is a great one. This trade was a good trade, something to help us make a playoff push, but nothing more than that.

leave it to DougThonus

to bring up the ‘how does it effect James Johnson?’ angle:

Brown will get his minutes by having the Bulls go small costing Johnson his reserve role. Pargo will be absolutely buried as well, but he was already absolutely buried so nothing has really changed there.

He’s probably right. Though I think that most of Brown’s minutes will come from Pargo (he wasn’t ‘absolutely’ buried if he did play once in a while) and reducing the workload on Kurt.

Does anyone really even care about JJ at this point?

Look what the Org. did to Tyrus, and he was way more talented than JJ is. Plus, this season is all about keeping up appearances (with another low-seed cameo in the playoffs) and creating necessary cap space for a max free agent. If we do both of those things, I’ll be pretty content for now.

by Illini15 on Jan 25, 2010 7:15 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

The belief that JJ is anything more than a body at this point is irrational. He has looked terrible whenever he's been on the court.

He’s got a 7.5 PER and he’s 22 years old, so it’s not like he has this huge vast reservoir of untapped talent. He might get better. He might get a lot better. But history suggests he’ll be pretty crummy.

Noah looks iffy from here on out with the plantar problem.
Miller is not going to play like he did the other night too often.
Taj is going to foul out sooner rather than later.

JJ Sr. is too fat and might lose insurability if he gets on the court.
And now Gray is in New Orleans.

From Devin Brown's persepective

He probably is happy to be in Chicago.
He almost got dealt to the Twolves in December, but bucked the deal himself. At that point he knew his days in NO were numbered, so going to Bulls is better than Minn.

In terms of playing time he gets, he may not be happy (unless Kirk/Salmons leaves the team in next three weeks).
