Bulls 121, Wizards 119 (2OT)

Sorry about the lack of overflow threads! Bad job by me. Almost got to 1k there.

Huge win before the trip, the only thing better than a pulled-out OT win is one led by Rose and Noah.

Orlando was in the finals last season…and Boston is one of the best teams in the East…I know that is only two of the eight wins, but you can’t discount the fact that the Bulls have beaten a couple of tough teams…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

Boston - Garnett and Wallace /= one of the best teams in the East

You say some funny things sometimes.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I get what you are saying…but the Celtics -Garnett and Wallace made it to the second round of the playoffs last season…maybe you would prefer I say one of the better teams in the East.

by beating the Bulls?

As evenly matched as possible. I don’t consider the Bulls one of the better teams in the East. So no, I don’t think I’d like that either.

But they were 18-8 without Garnett

which is 56/57 wins, if you extend it over a season. And that would put them right behind Orlando, in terms of their record, and they’re still a top 4 team in the East, which I think qualifies them as one of the best in the Conference.

Stats time!

Garnett was worth about six points a game in point differential to the Celtics. They played well without him, but they won a lot of close games that they wouldn’t win over a season.

Let's go for 5

Rose was the man last night. Noah has turned out to be an incredible pick. Remember Hawes? Noah was totally exhausted at the end of the game. He also is Mr Clutch hitting key free throws. His nutty shot is actually pretty good. I know I repeat myself but maybe we win easier yesterday with Gordon, but Rose doesn’t develop as the man with Gordon playing. Washington, to their credit played a good game despite the craziness going on there. I read (sorry no link) yesterday where Arenas blames the Wiz for not supporting him. Unbelievable. Let’s go for 5 Monday!!

Gordon>>>>>>>>>Salmons… Let’s not forget that. Gordon is an EFFICIENT scorer, unlike Salmons. I think this years team will be at least as good as last years team(as is, injuries or trades could change this). Not because BG is gone, but because of the improvement of Noah and Rose, the return to health(for now) of Deng, and the increase in Hinrich’s role vs. Salmons. If they quit screwing with Tyrus things could be better still(not holding my breath). To sum up, to believe that losing BG for nothing was a positive thing for the Bulls is WRONG.

I'll probably get ripped for saying it, but I really don't think I want Wade

Personally I’d rather have any of the big men over him at this point, Bosh, Stoudemire, or Boozer. Obviously if we couldn’t pull that off, I’d be thrilled to get Wade, but I just don’t like the fit with Rose. They’re both slashers, neither hits the three, I just don’t see it.

Whereas if we get a post player like any of the above guys then all we would have to worry about is finding a shooting guard, preferably one that can play some D and hit threes at a decent clip. Rose is really starting to blossom and I don’t know what happens if we get Wade. Can you win like that? It’s definitely worth a shot, but I’d rather take my chances with a big man.

Agreed

I would like to see Bosh and Joe Johnson in a Bulls Uniform and we trade Deng and Salmons. I like Kirk but I hate his contract so he has to go and TT well…… we know he his gone.

by bluezman7 on Jan 16, 2010 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

What ablout Joe Johnson?

He can hit the three and take pressure off of Rose. It is a bit risky not knowing how they would fit together but I’ve watch Joe Johnson and he is terrific in the last five minutes of a game. Having Johnson and Rose together in the last five minutes of a game makes the Bulls hard to guard.

by chgobr on Jan 16, 2010 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

I think we'd be much better off with a big man

the reason Wade even enters the discussion is because of his enormous abilities. Joe Johnson doesn’t have those abilities, so while he may be a better fit than Wade, he won’t improve the team as much. Guys like Bosh, Stoudemire or Jefferson are equal or almost equal to Joe Johnson but much better fits.

My wish list. 1. Lebron 2. Bosh 3. Wade. 4 Stoudemire 5. Johnson/Lee

I’ll only be satisifed with Johnson if we can get a Lee or Scola to go along with him.

I'd like to get Bosh and then somehow pry Morrow from the Warriors

He’s a RFA this offseason, but the Bulls will need to unload both Kurt and Salmons to have any room to sign anything beyond a max player. Although I guess we could use a chunk of the MLE if we wanted. Rose/Morrow/Deng/Noah/Bosh would be a pretty sweet team to watch, although our backcourt would be pretty bad defensively. You’d have to imagine we’d be the best rebounding team in the NBA, though, and we’d probably score a ton of points.

by Illini15 on Jan 16, 2010 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

If the Bulls sign a free agent outright...

They would not have the MLE to offer anyone…they would have to work out a sign and trade for the free agent to retain any cap exceptions.

Morrow’s stuck on the bench with Ellis and Curry taking major minutes at SG/PG.

The problem is Morrow is cheap, undrafted, so the GSW owner will hold on to him until it is time to re-sign.

How Cheap is the GSw owner? Last Game the Warriors ran out of players! Curry was let back in with 6 fouls since the NBA requires 5 men on the court.

putting the ball in his hands in late game situations is great because of his awareness, he is either going to take the shot if he thinks he can make it or dish it out. Deng is being paid $10.3 this season and $11.3 next… he’s not being paid like a top 5 SF because he isn’t a top 5 SF… but he does produce well for the position.

At the game

Bulls should have won easily, but happy they squeaked by. If Jamison and Butler hadn’t played 50+ minutes, I don’t think the Bulls would have won.
Highlights—Rose with the game- winner. He hasn’t made many, but there is no one else on the team to shoot them. Hopefully this helps his confidence.
No cheer for Big Macs. The game was to close so the fans couldn’t be sure the Bulls would win.
Lowlight—Pargo. God he sucks. Wash played a lot of zone so I was happy VDN put him in. Not only did he miss a wide-open three, but Earl Boykins immediately burned him for eight points. EARL BOYKINS!!!

I know

What a waste of roster spots. I would’ve much rather seen one of those spots go to that kid Byars that played in preseason. At least he will give you a good effort and possibly some decent moments. With Lindsey and Pargo you get neither. You just know they are going to suck with no chance of decent moments.

Are there any worse guard tandems in the NBA?
Maybe a better question would be…
Are there any worse guard tandems in the “D” league?

I love that final shot by Rose because...

his shot selection has been a bit frustrating of late. I remember that 3-game stretch where he relentlessly looked for contact on drives, and the past few gamesI mostly remember him pull up in transition from the freethrow line.

Last year, when he crossed over his man he would use his speed/handles (usually an inside-out dribble) to get past the big man picking him up at the key and drive hard to the rim. Now he usually settles for a floater (which is a great shot, but I still cringe a little) or a jumper. I remember seeing him getting blocked from behind a couple times (by Rondo, Jennings) because he didn’t capitalize once he beat his initial defender.

BUT, yesterday, a ton of my worries melted watching that play. Reading his defender like a book, putting on the spin cycle and realizing that nobody stepped out on him. Perfect shot selection with that floater…so I guess it all paid off.

Granted, I’d still love to see him drive more, but as of today I trust his floater a lot more.

Rose definitely has more confidence in that little turnaround floater, and he's getting better at scoring once he drives.

If you read that article, you’ll see Rose is actually leading the NBA in FG% on shots within 10 feet of the basket that are not actually layups.

That's amazing...

Lebron, Wade, Melo, and all those prolific slashers are behind Rose in that category? Awesome.

But if that’s the case, why must we rely on the long 2 pointer so much?

by Stacey_Is_King on Jan 16, 2010 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

After I thought about it, I realized

Rose is an athletic specimen, but not one person on the team is even remotely athletic. Deng is slow and has bad body-control, Salmons is slow and lacks a vertical, Tyrus is just out of control when he drives, Hinrich isn’t really slow and he has a decent crossover, but he’s so tentative around the rim. Who else besides Rose can actually consistently drive?

by Stacey_Is_King on Jan 16, 2010 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

Can drive =/= athletic

Thomas is an athletic freak. Noah is actually fairly athletic.

As far as getting into the lane, Salmons can actually drive a little and has decent body control close to the basket. But it’s true that Rose is the only one that has the skills to consistently attack the rim. But it’s true of a lot of teams that the PG position is far and away the one that goes to the hoop better than anyone else.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 16, 2010 10:27 PM CST up reply actions

You won't find any decent slasher in the league who can slash while being totally unathletic

Salmons’ body control can’t compensate for his other deficiencies around the rim. Tyrus has the athleticism, but he doesn’t have the body control. I guess you need both to be considered proficient in slashing to any degree.

by Stacey_Is_King on Jan 17, 2010 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

Well, all those guys are better finishers at the rim and dunk a whole lot more.

Rose needs to improve at the rim, but when it comes to those hook shots and floaters he is uncannily good at it.

or simply get to the line when within 10 feet of the basket

;(

bunch of wusses…rose is a real man, avoids contact and finishes, making the defender feel stupid everytime (but he really should start getting to the line more)

if only ppl would stop bitching bout gorden not being here

i dnt feel sorry for him, he left the bulls becuz of money that all he cared about, fuk him. i glad his season aint working out, we dnt need his ass no more.

by rosegirldotcom on Jan 16, 2010 5:05 PM CST reply actions

People are upset that he was given away for nothing

and people are upset that other players were overpaid while the Bulls tried to underpay him. So people got the right to wonder why the best players get let go while average players got compensated for being average.

Look, we’ll see how much bitching you’ll be doing if Management doesn’t get a free agent this offseason and the reason we don’t get Bosh, Wade, Lebron, or any free agent because the Bulls chose to overpay Deng and Hinrich.

We are 1.5 games behind the 5th seed

Both Charlotte and Toronto are playing real well right now.

We couldn’t get Stephen Jackson for Kirk? I wonder if he still has any guns?

If there's any proof that home court advantage is overrated.

It’s the Bobcats winning 8 in a row in front of 800 fans a game.

Saw it.

Jackson had a healthy and motivated Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Mikael Pietrus and Matt Barnes.

Since Jackson was traded, the W’s Monta Ellis has had an all-star season.

The Bobcats have a guy who will jackup 3’s with 18 sec on the clock and whine at refs while his man runs the fast break.

by Noe_Valley on Jan 18, 2010 12:48 AM CST up reply actions

Monta Ellis was playing that way anyway

It’s not just since he was traded.

Why don't we get Phil Jackson back while we're at it?

Miller, Hinrich and J. James for Kobe works salary wise. ; )
