interesting
Del Negro had assurances going into the season that Bulls front-office chiefs John Paxson and Gar Forman concurred with Del Negro’s assessment that the team would take a dip this season after letting Ben Gordon go in free agency.
We weren’t told this.

Confirmation that they are treading water, lovely.
Though I guess it’s better they understand the team kinda sucks and the whole "We took Boston to 7 games, expect big things! is just PR shtick.
Taj Gibson is the face of Bulls basketball!

I have my doubts whether the front office actually believed the Bulls would dip
I’m guessing Stein’s source for this info is someone close to Del Negro, or Del Negro himself. But I think Gar and Pax were under impression that many other fans were that bringing back the same basic team with Deng switched out for Gordon would be an improvement.
Given how the organization treated Deng in comparison with Gordon, I think it is reasonable to assume that many people thought the Bulls would continue on the same path as last year or improve.

yeah, and I think it's an intesting distinction
I’d actually prefer them knowing it’d be worse and selling us bullshit, rather than them honestly thinking that Kurt+ballmovement+defense+Kurt = championships.

This article is too pro VDN
I agree with the criticism of how management has handled this, but I don’t believe that management or VDN thought the Bulls would struggle to this extent coming into this season.
I certainly thought they would struggle, but I was pro-Gordon. The organization has been down on gordon and pro-Deng for a while. The organization believes Deng is the better player. It seems perfectly reasonable if you believe Deng is better than Gordon to believe that the Bulls would improve when the one change the team made was essentially switching out Gordon for Deng.
By the way – those injury concerns? Hinrich missed 6 games and Tyrus is the back up power forward (completely VDN’s decision). When Tyrus came back, there was a palpable effort by those close to the organization to not give him credit, and we know the Bulls are trying like hell to trade him. So c’mon. Were the Bulls only team to face injuries this year?
I don’t think this is a 50 win team. But VDN hasn’t done a good job. And this article simply glosses over his mistakes.

right, and I never believe blame is finite and needs to be doled out
VDN can be to blame for being bad, and the Org. is to blame for the cruddy roster (and hiring VDN, who’s being bad)

I agree with the main point of what you're saying
but I think the Derrick Rose injury, considering he missed all of pre season, should be included along with Tyrus and Kirk. Seeing as how many people on this site blame that injury on Rose’s very slow start and subsequently the Bulls start as well, I’d say that was the big one.
Vinny Del OH NO!
