Omer Asik in competition at Eurobasket 2009
[From the FanShots. And here I thought I didn't have a dog in the Eurobasket fight. Forgot about Asik, though I'm worried he'll be 'Plan E' when it comes to 2010 Free Agency -ed.]
I guess the knee is better.

Do we have any other guys overseas?
Does anybody know any other guys drafted that played overseas for a few years then came out and had a decent impact on their respective teams?
I think Ginobli would qualify somewhat, but I thought he was a higher/more prized pick than a lot of these “draft and stash” guys.
he played 15 min...............for TURKEY
5 pts and 1 blocked shot?
it is so frustrating that the best place to chat about the bulls is dominated by a whiny drama queen moderator with a man crush on an average SG......6 recs
he is coming back from a knee injury, so there's that to consider. and don't sleep on Turkey,
Hedo Turkoglu is the man (even if he is overpaid). Asik is a very good player (despite the paltry stats) and Ilyasova is a legitimate NBA player.

Oh and Semih Erden, who is another big man prospect for Turkey that the Celtics drafted
recently. He should be a decent player, too.

Extrapolating that out, he's a beast!
15 points and 9 rebounds, 6/6 from the field, 3 blocks… He’s basically a double-double machine! Schedule the championship parade…!

Omer Asik
He still has to prove himself… Euro-league while a competitive league… doesn’t have to talent level close to the NBA.
I like that hes 7’0… He has the skillset to rebound and block shots… Hes only 23 years.
I hope he can come to the Bulls and be a solid defensive big of the bench that could score a little bit too.
OR Maybe will pull a “Dirk” and be like a elite Camby-esqe type.
Whats the situation with him in regards to coming to America???
He's eligible to come after this year
There’s a countdown that’s been up since he was drafted.

He might to skinny and get pushed around

at least in Euroleague, Josh Childress is an average player.
so it isn’t so bad.
It's nice too see him playing
But his stats from last season are not great. Especially from the FT line…That’s something he needs to improve…
Does anyone really expect more from Omer than what we already get from Aaron Gray?

Paxson should
he moved 3 second-round picks for the guy.

Did we really need to 'not pick CDR' that badly?
I mean, he hit all of Paxson’s needs too.
WTF Paxson.
Uggggh.

meh, CDR has as much of a resume as Asik

But I like him better!
And besides, he would be only one pick. :P

CDR is amazing
Don’t you dare knock him.
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

Well
He definitely runs the floor and finishes better than Gray, is more athletic and is a shot blocker from what I’ve read on him. Gray is just…BIG.

Good news!
From Brew Hoop:
http://www.brewhoop.com/2009/9/9/1022104/wednesday-notes-ilyasova-stars-win#comments
Look at the comments. Highlights:
“Poland’s frontline is a bit more familiar—Gortat at center with Lampe and Szewczyk seeing time at PF/C as well. Interestingly, Asik has been taking it to Gortat early on, 10 pts in the first quarter.”
“Meanwhile, Asik looks fantastic—just put a great up and under move on Gortat for his 20th point. He’s stronger than he looks and has shown some really nice footwork.”
Actually, that’s all of the comments about Asik. I assume it’s our Asik. 20 points on Gortat is nothing to sneeze at, though.

That sounds good
My impression was that he didn’t have much offense yet but that sounds like he’s got a little bit.

Considering Gortat is a decent defender, that sounds impressive.

I saw some highlights;
Asik was much more athletic than I expected. And he’s big. 7.025 barefoot.

and here they
are.
Asik averaging 12 ppg, 6rpg, 1.3bpg on 77% shooting in 20mpg.

thanks for finding that
he looks a bit stiff, but at least he has decent hands and some skill.

those are very solid numbers. A Noah-Asik center combo should be very nice
once Brad departs.

one of the things that stood out from Omer's highlights is how good his hands are.
He caught passes high, low, off the bounce, and in the air and was able to handle them all pretty seamlessly. He also has more moves around the bucket than I thought he did (I was picturing more of a Biedrins type who gets all his points off of offensive boards).

Gortat's D was pretty weak
I’m guessing he wasn’t prepared to play any of these guys he has to guard.
Asik looks pretty good. Love the interior passing.
His line is ridiculous in the game. 22pts, 8reb, 1bs, 1to, 1foul on 10-11 shooting.

What if we magically got Wade
And tried this (I’m assuming Salmons opts out):
PG: Rose/Hnrich
SG: Wade/Hinrich
SF: Deng/Johnson
PF: Noah/Random Scrub
C: Asik/Random Scrub
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again; I do not believe in James Johnson at PF.
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.
"I do not believe in James Johnson at PF".. I second that motion!

I believe in him as a reserve pf. He could cause situational problems
for the other team.

if you haven't noticed
neither Noah or Asik can hit a shot outside of 10ft, so that would pose a problem. I think Asik as a solid backup C is the most we should expect. We need a legit scoring threat from either the 4 or 5, and with your proposal of Wade joining the team, it would be much better to have at least one big with range on his jumper in order to keep the lane from being too clogged.
yeah, by saying we should expect something from Asik
I mean ‘something’ as in ‘replace Taj’

Yeah, I know that we wouldn't be able to do that at the 4 and 5
I just figured that if we sign Wade to a max contract, we wouldn’t be able to get a starteresque PF with our lack of cap room. If we trade Hinrich away for expirings, then this would work, but who thinks Kurt’s going to be traded? And would this be any better than the one above?:
PG: Rose/Random Scrub
SG: Wade/Random Scrub
SF: Deng/Johnson
PF: Thomas/Random Scrub
C: Noah/Asik
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.
by stupidgenius on Sep 10, 2009 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions
On the other hand
If we got Amare, then we wouldn’t have to trade Kurt (big sigh of relief by Pax):
PG: Rose/Hinrich
SG: MLE (Dahntay Jones role)/Hinrich
SF: Deng/Johnson
PF: Stoudemire/Johnson (only in spot time)
C: Noah/Asik
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

Stupidgenius, I love it! That’s such a stretch, though when we haven’t seen one guy even play pro ball, the other is in Euroleague and Wade is likely to just resign at this point, provided that Riley does something to bring him some more talent (I think that’s likely given that it is Riley we’re talking about).
I’m always weary of non NBA players and comparisons, but playing well against a backup center in the NBA is a good thing, especially when that backup just got something like 5 million a year and backs up the best NBA center. He also played well when Howard was out and doesn’t seem like a weak defender at all.
