Timberwolves sign Sessions to offer sheet

4yrs (I've read elsewhere the 4th is a player option), $16m deal. (ht: Canis Hoopus)

I don't see the downside for Minnesota. They need talent, especially backcourt talent. And by looking at Sessions' productivity relative to his age, he'll out-produce what this contract costs.

So, no I don't agree that it may not be a good move because it'd hurt Johnny Flynn's feelings. There's creating the perfect roster, but there's also asset collection. The Wolves are in such a hole talent-wise (dealing a few chips already on draft night for the 5th pick) that taking advantage of Sessions' dried-up market makes a ton of sense.

To me, if your team sucks, you can't be too picky about getting talent, even at similar positions to your existing talent. It's a similar reason why the Bucks shouldn't let Sessions walk at that price just because they drafted Brandon Jennings, but the Bucks are in the luxury tax so they don't really have a choice.

And another Sessions-related link, as this 'what's with Kahn?, LOL!' made me guffaw:

And while I’m at it, I saw this note about Kahn’s take on the Knicks players.

“…The Pioneer Press is reporting that Timberwolves president David Kahn has no interest in trading Ricky Rubio to the Knicks.

Rubio has committed to playing in Spain for at least two more seasons.

Kahn feels the Knicks have nothing of interest to offer in return for Rubio…”

Nothing of interest? Wilson Chandler isn't a player to be considered in a deal for Rubio? Nate Robinson would be a cult hero there.

Good luck Minnesota, see you in another city in a few years.

The arrogance and entitlement of a Knicks fan, everyone.

Who's out there that would be market value for Rubio?

Especially because we have no idea what he’ll end up being like down the line.

There’s also a dearth of teams that actually are really smarting at the PG position, most either have good PGs or at least think that they have good PGs for the future.

not sure

but I’d rather see a future 1st than Wilson Chandler or Nate Robinson (who’s a free agent in a year!).

Of course, the Knicks don’t own a 2010 first, ‘cause they got Isiah’d.

I disagree

This is a bad move for Minnesota…. (explanation added here) because they are almost assuring themselves that Rubio will not be coming to Minnesota. It is also a bad move when you look at what they started with this summer – the #6 pick, Foye and Miller – and what they have now – Flynn / Sessions. Kahn needs to stop hedging his bets – if he felt like Rubio was this one of a kind talent than he should have just handed him the offense like the Bulls did with Rose. It seems likely that Rubio would be in Minnesota right now if Kahn had never chosen Flynn. Why would Rubio want to compete with Flynn, its a losing proposition.

If you think that Rubio is a transcendent talent, than get him to Minnesota and making him the starting point guard by any means possible. But if you don’t believe that, why the hell are you picking him? The Timberwolves don’t have 3 years to wait for Rubio – if I’m the owner I kind of want to start making money now.

I also don’t think you can make a legit argument for acquiring Sessions and Flynn in the same summer. I mean, you could make the same argument for the Bulls keeping Hinrich. A team with few assets better hold on to every player they can get. But after a while, you have to take a leap of faith. Sessions is going to retard Flynn’s development, there is no doubt about that. I don’t see much point in using the #6 pick on a player who is going to be a back up for the next 4 years.

I also think you are overrating how much of an asset picks like Flynn and Rubio are. Draft picks are like new cars. As soon as you choose one, the value immediately starts to drop. How much value is Flynn going to have in a year as a back up point guard? What if Flynn has a year like Mike Conley, who is going to give you equal value to a #6 pick than? When is Flynn ever going to get a chance to start, Sessions is only 25? What if Rubio doesn’t set the world on fire for Barcelona – what if his value never is as high as it was this summer? There are so many unknowns I think the smarter things would have been to keep the assets you can count on (Foye, Miller), than make the Rubio pick, and than once you knew for sure about Rubio, pursue Sessions. Instead the Timberwolves basically gave away Foye and Miller for the rights to have Rubio 3 years from now – maybe.

So as a singular move, signing Sessions isn’t bad. But as a culmination of summer moves that saw the Timberwolves pursue 3 point guards and give up the 3rd and 4th best players on their teams, I don’t see how this can be construed as anything other than a bumbling summer.

The T-Wolves have 2 power forwards, 2 point guards and pretty much nothing else.

Nope, Rose was the starter from the beginning, Hinrich was never a threat.

He may have benched him for Kirk at some random times, but Vinny never showed any restraint with Derrick.

not true

Rose started Game 1. Hinrich wasn’t injured, in fact he and Gordon came off the bench to back up Rose and Sefolosha.

I don’t think they’re comparable situations at all.

Johnny Flynn is no Derrick Rose. And Ramon Sessions isn’t 28 and making $9-10m a season.

This is a GREAT signing for the T-Wolves.

I mean, yes it creates a bit of redundancy, but this gives them a bonafide starter should Flynn not want/need to start, and locks up a good young PG for a few years at an extremely reasonable contract.
I dunno, I have to agree with YFBB here. If you can get a Ramon Sessions for $4 million a year you take it. What was his PER last year, 19 or something? He’s good, and improving.

I support the Tornado Release [See: Joakim Noah]

by Prevenge on Sep 6, 2009 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree too.

The T-Wolves are building a solid young core core. Sure Al Jefferson’s pretty short for a center, but now that they have Sessions, they can try and trade Flynn for a small forward, and if/when they get Rubio, they could try a double point guard attack and have a very good lineup of

PG: Rubio
SG: Sessions
SF: Guy they trade Flynn for
PF: Kevin Love
C: Al Jefferson.

I don’t know about you guys, but I like that lineup.

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

by stupidgenius on Sep 6, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

RUBIO?

aint he playing in spain for the next 3 years lol??

"One good thing about being wrong is the joy it brings to others"

by PORCH1 on Sep 6, 2009 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, and than if they sign Wade

they could be hoisting the championship in 2011.

Sessions is not a SG. He cannot play the 2. Your lineup is predicated on 3 things that haven’t happened and may never happen: Rubio coming to the US and being good enough to start; Sessions converting to the 2; Flynn being traded for a quality 3. Sure, if everything goes perfectly the Timberwolves will be in good shape. But how often does everything go perfectly? At the beginning of the summer this was the Wolves starting line-up

PG: Telfair
SG: Foye
SF: Miller
PF: Love
C: Jefferson

They also had the #6 pick in the draft, whom they could have used on Flynn or Rubio. They also still would have had money available to sign Sessions. Thus, the T’wolves could have had

PG: Sessions/Rubio or Flynn
SG: Foye
SF: Miller
PF: Love
C: Jefferson

Instead, what the T’wolves have is

PG: Sessions/Flynn
SG: ?? probably Flynn
SF: ?? probably Brewer
PF: Love
C: Jefferson

with the hope that Rubio comes over in 2 years, but with the more likely scenario being he will come to the NBA in 3 years (if ever).

How is that improving the team? The T-Wolves traded Mike Miller’s expiring contract and Randy Foye’s rookie contract for a guy who they won’t even have until 2012. They lost their 2 best wing scorers and replace them with 2 smallish point guards who have no ability to play D.

The Twolves are going to be one of the worst defensive teams in the league, they have no scorers or even worthwhile players at the swing positions and their most promising point guard prospect (of the 3 they pursued) plays for Barcelona and has watched them pick another point guard and sign a 23 year old point guard. I’m sure he is aching to go play in Minnesota…

The T-Wolves will be worse next season and there is no proof that they have set themselves up for anything other than continued losing. How high is Flynn’s stock going to be after sitting behind Sessions, or vice versa? Why is their this assumption that the TWolves are going to be able to move these young assets for all these great players? If NBA execs were so excited about getting Sessions someone probably would have offered more than 4 million a season.

My central argument is that the T-Wolves have bungled their summer. They haven’t significantly improved the team and they have failed to bring in their most promising prospect. I don’t see how anyone can construe that as successful.

This is a nice move by Minny. the knicks on the other hand

have been reported to have interests on signing Sessions. Again they have failed to lure a free agent to play for them, like J Kidd and Grant Hill, oh man, D’Antoni is in hell.

Chandler is a decent SG, still needs work on his shot, but he could be a decent 16-18 point scorer….I don’t know how his D is.

Why would Minny sign Sessions? I’d just let Flynn have the keys…they need a SG/SF badly but they stockpile PGs instead.

by C Smoove on Sep 5, 2009 11:32 AM CDT reply actions

They are still collecting assets, and with Rubio not coming for the next 2-3 years they needed two valid options. Otherwise their lineup would have been Flynn and Chucky Atkins.

i don't think it's that bad of a move

but it’s puzzling.

i don’t agree that rubio would necessarily be playing for the wolves w/out flynn around because the nba only permits putting 500k towards a buyout and such and instead they can get him in 2 years and pay nothing.

they may figure flynn and sessions are their pgs for now and probably trade one to accommodate rubio in 2 years. if sessions is decent, his contract won’t be terrible and they will probably be able to get rid of him. i dunno. if one of the three was more of a combo guard this move would make more sense.

kahn was saying he thought rubio and flynn could play together, so whatever.

that, and the knicks thing is hilarious. lol!!!

yes! this.

It’s not like he’s making $10m a year like another backup PG I know. No, neither Sessions or Flynn has any combo abilities, but I don’t think they were in the position to be that picky considering the rest of their guard corps.

(thinks to self)

I wonder if the Wolves thought of making an offer to Ray Felton, he’d be a better ‘fit’, but likely wouldn’t take that same contract given his higher QO.

True. And Sessions has more upside. At worst you have a capable backup, at best much much more. His ability to draw fouls and pass off picks is already great, his defense mediocre (which is an upgrade in Minny), and his jumpshot could be salvageable.

Not to mention, why are people worrying about Johnny Flynn so much?

Being a lottery pick doesn’t mean anything if the draft is especially weak like this year was. He has upside, but it’s not like Minnesota should just hand the team over to him and expect constant above average play.

Who knows, maybe the Wolves will get some insane luck and land John Wall next summer.
