Initial Bulls Media Day link dump
Not much news, lots of talk about defense.
Perhaps the most interesting thing I saw in my scan of media day reactions is that Jerome James is alive, and wants to play basketball. That's technically not good news, from and 'insured contract' standpoint.
I'll give a proper write-up over the weekend, but in the meantime:
- Mike McGraw, Daily Herald
- Doug Thonus, ChicagoNow ("Everything is in place for this special year". HOSE THIS MAN DOWN!)
- Joel Brigham, Hoopsworld
- KC Johnson, Tribune

ah hahaha from Mike McGraw's article a few things....
General manager Gar Forman claimed Kirk Hinrich had the best summer since joining the Bulls in 2003. Hinrich wasn’t sure he agreed, but is ready to go.
Nice confidence Kirt!
Jerome James plans on…………………. playing? Oh god. He showed up?
-The most relaxed man in the building was probably John Paxson, who sat up in the balcony watching Forman take on Paxson’s former role of dealing with the media.
So Gar’s job is just to do all the crappy work that Paxson was never good at… I guess we knew that right? Still it just weird.

The full quote is more interesting:
“I feel like I had a good summer,” Hinrich said. "I don’t know if this is my best one. I feel like I’m ready. I’m excited about the group we’ve got. We’ve got good guys. It’s going to be a lot of fun, hopefully.
“We’re going to miss Ben’s explosive scoring a little bit. But we’ve got guys who can score. It was five years, I guess, so it’s a little different not having him here. I’ve known for a while he wasn’t going to be here, though.”
From McGraw’s full story.
I like McGraw, and he tends to be my favorite of the beat writers, but I wish he hadn’t stopped right where Kirk says he knew Ben was going to be gone for a while.
In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!

That's a ridiculous failure of journalism for him to not pursue that further. Cripes.

I liked dougs article
maybe cuz as it is his first time with no one to guide him, i could relate or imagine myself being in the situation (if only i could… :() and therefore enjoyed reading his article….plus i also like how he sort of mocked the majority of the reporters and the misplaced concerns they had (noahs image and its factor on his work ethic)…i guess ill read the others now…

I guess James Johnson is nice?
I guess I miss judged him.. I always thought he came off kinda ehh meh cocky too coolish? Oh everyone is buff now. But that was an interesting read by Dougy. Special year? I think watching Vinny get fired will make it quite special.

James Johnson is awesome. I’ve interviewed him twice, and I really can’t say enough about what a good guy he comes off as. It doesn’t mean he’ll be great on the court, but he certainly makes me want to root for him.

First off, no one on the team is really "bad" anyway so I am not sure why the distinction is always made.
In the past the “good guys” end up beloved by the management, over paid, and held on to for dear life. To me that phrase has a bad connotation. I prefer to like guys based on their talent level and what they do on the court. Often times those guys are not the “good guys” beloved by the city and management though.

if you already know a player is good at basketball then you
probably dont have to root for him to succeed at basketball, right?
by TheMoon on Sep 27, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's Chicago reporting.
It’s why I don’t read “professional” writers: if I’m going to get biased writing based on a player’s personality, I’ll just continue to read the blogs. Also, it’s not an absolute, but rooting for one guy to succeed based on how nice he is typically implies the opposite. Paul Sullivan admitted as much concerning Milton Bradley: that Bradley ignored him before the season starts and OF COURSE that’s going to make Sullivan write negative articles about Bradley. Not to say Bradley didn’t deserve them, but Sullivan was going to write it as if he did no matter what.
I don’t expect sports reporters to be completely unbiased because it is just entertainment and if they wanted to be serious journalists, they’d go into “something that mattered”. I do, however, wish it were less so.
And yeah, lie Cranscape says above, I’d rather root for the guy who is good at basketball than the guy who is nice. I root for sports teams because I want them to win. For the most part, I get my “personality fix” from real life. I enjoy the game a different way and I was “ugh”-ing that there isn’t reporting to reflect that.

did you ask Johnson which position he sees himself playing in the NBA?
by Basketball Smurf on Sep 26, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it doesnt matter what he sees
what matters for us is what vinny sees
by sin on Sep 26, 2009 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'd like to believe that
but the Bulls have another PF whose penchant for playing on the outside sometimes causes problems between him and the coaches. I hope JJ isn’t the same way.

BIngo
Johnson’s answer to the question, "which position does he see himself playing?’ is important. It should have been asked.
Bulls drafted JJ to play PF and not drift out like a SF. He sank in the draft because teams thought we wanted to play like a SF.
by Noe_Valley on Sep 27, 2009 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What makes you think the Bulls drafted him to play PF?
From I have seen and heard, he is a tweener…he will play both forward positions depending on match-ups/personnel on the floor.

Well, we have our SF going into the future
and Tyrus is on his way out. They should be looking for a PF then.

If that's the way you feel...
…then they should be looking for a PF at the deadline or through free agency next summer…
None of us have seen J.J. play in the NBA, but the odds of drafting a difference making PF at the 16 slot of a weak draft are slim. IMO, he was drafted to be that Noc type of role player (without the chucking of threes).
Why isn't your friendly Bulls Blogger friendly?

If you look on the JJ thread
people are expecting a lot of him despite him being the 16th pick. Not me, but that seems to be the general consensus. On draft day everyone said getting two PFs were insurance against Tyrus leaving.

exactly
it does matter. Tyrus Thomas saw himself as a SF when he was drafted, and then the Bulls drafted him as a PF. That’s been a problem. It’d be interesting to know if the same situation might arise.

Doug just writes weird things sometimes, and that was one of them :-)
And joakim does deserve some questions about his work ethic. Not because he enjoys his time off, but remember he did have to play his way into shape last season.

Damn straight he does. Did Doug forget how long it took Noah to get in shape last year? Only half the damn season…
by smash! on Sep 26, 2009 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you misunderstood, I have no problem with people questioning Joakim’s work ethic.
There were tons of questions about his image as a guy with no work ethic. Not about his actual work ethic, but discussion about his perceived work ethic and how he can change that. To which his attitude seemed to be something of “I work hard, how you perceive it doesn’t matter”.
Now if he’s actually not working hard, that’s an issue, but if he is, then I agree completely. He shouldn’t be worried about changing how he’s perceived. He should just worry about working hard.

the special year thing
To me a special year doesn’t need to be a year where the Bulls win the championship or even make the ECF.
2004/5 was a special year and they lost in the first round.
2006/7 was a special year and they lost in the second round.
2008/9 was special for large parts of it due to the playoffs and watching Derrick destroy the league at times.
There are years that you simply enjoy watching as a fan, and I think this has a good chance at being one of those years even though it won’t likely put a ring on everyone’s finger. I think the pieces are in place that if everyone stays healthy, the team could exceed expectations pretty significantly and make the year a lot of fun.
by dougthonus on Sep 26, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And I should say, I know not all fans are like that. Some people are miserable if they don’t win the title. I tend to enjoy the good things about every player and every season. Some seasons are difficult to find anything enjoyable about (2007/8), but most seasons have something you can latch onto and enjoy.
If not, what are you watching for? Why put yourself through it if you’re going to be miserable without a title. Odds are that over the next 20 years, there will be at least 20 teams that don’t win a title. The Bulls have as good a shot at being one of those teams as any other team that’s not ready to win one right now.

maybe they do better than expected this year
but it’s possible they’re totally changing the team after this year anyway, several key pieces are too old to matter (yes, in the championship pursuit that may never happen) so I’m not getting too attached to this group outside of Rose, Noah, and Deng.
