Trade Idea on a slow August day

Like a lot of you, I spent a lot of time speculating on things the Bulls can do to get better for the future.  One plan of action that the appear to be following is utilizing cap space on a free agent next season to try and take the next step.  It's been discussed on this blog in several posts that the Bulls will need to clear some additional cap space in order to sign a max type free agent (Bosh, Wade, LeBron) because with Salmons likely not to opt out and Hinrich still under contract, they will basically need to let Tyrus walk to have that kind of money.  I'm no salary cap/luxury tax guru, but I think a trade with the Houston Rockets could possibly help both teams this season and for the future.  A trade of Brad Miller, Kirk Hinrich, and Tyrus Thomas for Tracy McGrady and Luis Scola works for both teams.

How it helps the Bulls:

Tracy McGrady is often injured as we all know.  However, he is a bonafide star when healthy, we would be giving up two guys who will be coming off of our bench and one who we may possibly let walk for nothing.  He will miss the first month of the season but we have John Salmons to start at the 2 anyway.  He could really give us a go-to scorer in the playoffs as well.  Luis Scola is a solid PF that can score with his back to the basket, rebound, and defend.  The key to all of this is, that's $26 milion coming off the cap for 2010.

How it helps the Rockets:

Yao Ming is out for the year and they have no center currently so Brad Miller can move right in and be the starting center.  Kirk Hinrich gives them a solid guard than can play either 1 or 2, defend, knock down threes and run the offense.  The Rockets can take a one year flyer on Tyrus who, given a new team, new environment, contract year etc and see what he can do.  They get 3 starting quality players on a team that will be without McGrady for at least the first month anyway and won't have Yao at all.  Also, they will have about $17 million expiring in Tyrus and Brad Miller for 2010.

This gives us a crap load of cap room, isn’t McGrady expiring…20 million off the books….and Kirk’s contract gone too.

Scola is a decent replacement for Tyrus….this actually isn’t a terrible trade idea.

Maybe so

but he’s got over $23 million in salary coming off the cap. Being a contract year and likely his last chance at a pretty big contract, if he’s healthy at all we will play and play hard. Worst case scenario is he’s hurt as usual, we didn’t lose but one starter for him and Scola actually would be an improvement over Tyrus in terms of consist production. I just feel like Houston would be just as anxious to get rid of McGrady as we would to get his expiring deal. If we end up worse this year, so be it. We get a lottery pick for our troubles and a load of cap space.

Definitely an interesting idea

Would Houston be willing to their remaining star/go-to player with Yao and Artest gone? Not knowing a great deal about Scola, but he’s capable of knocking down 17-footers. That would bode well for the pick and roll offense. I don’t know about him being a back to the basket player though.

As long as we're throwing out trade ideas why not something like

Rose and Thomas for Al Jefferson and Flynn or rights to rubio

I think it's a pretty solid idea..

but, it leaves us really thin for the beginning of the season:

PG: Rose
SG: Salmons
SF: Deng
PF: Scola
C: Noah

Reserves: James Johnson, Taj Gibson, Aaron Gray, Jannero Pargo -—— YIKES!

Of course this would get infinitely better once McGrady comes back (assuming he does come back) and would provide us with a boat-load of cap room.

The idea of an additional lottery pick doesn’t excite me that much because a.) being in the lottery makes us less attractive to potential free agents and b.) we all know that our front office will inevitably screw said draft pick up unless the choice is painfully obvious.

I was talking about the comment

that suggested including Rose in a trade not the original post.

I like this...

I wonder if they’d rather have Salmons though to replace McGrady?

by smash! on Aug 27, 2009 6:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

They might...

Considering Salmons would provide more of a scoring threat than Hinrich, which is presumably what they would be looking for in dumping TMac.

I don’t post on here a lot, but this trade idea really intrigues me. I think it really works for both sides in the short term, although it probably favors us more in the long term.

by bullsNC on Aug 27, 2009 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It leaves us short this year but are we really going to do anything more than make the playoffs and lose in the first round anyway. TMac’s expiring greatly enhances the chance of getting a 2010 star….all we lose is Hinrich basically. Scola is a guy who can put up 14/8 every game consistently and will hustle hard and has an ok jumper. Only downside is that our bench is now short as hell and if any starter goes down, we’re in a world of trouble.

This is a pretty good idea. And if McGrady can contribute by the second half, this may be a great idea. I like it.

If you are worried about this year, then this trade probably makes us a 38 win team.

If you are one of the ones who is going all out to have a chance in 2010 sweepstakes, this is a good deal.

I am in the middle….this year is kind of a wash anyway so why not roll the dice? Miller is gonna be gone next year and Kirk should have been traded anyway…so all we are losing is Tyrus and Scola is a more than adequate replacement.

I really don’t see how this is such a terrible idea.

by C Smoove on Aug 28, 2009 11:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That's pretty much where I am

We need to just roll the dice in my opinion if they really want to get a real star in 2010. I don’t see this current team getting past the first round against any of those top 3 teams in the East.

defence

bulls are moving in a diferent direction or are “trying” to anyways…reason why we parted with Gordon and kept hinrich and salmons and signed deng to maximum contract and didnt sign amare and thats because the bulls want to become a defensive team…will they get there..thats a different question

Not all contracts are maximum contracts

Gordon didn’t want a max contract, and Deng didn’t get a maximum contract.

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

LOL

ok sorry i messed up the techincalities but deng has the largest contract at chicago and ben wanted about the same initially…

This frees some cap room, but not much more...

Miller and Tyrus were already coming off the books next year…I don’t dislike the trade I suppose, since we would have a go to scorer in the playoffs and Hinrichs contract is gone, but there might be a better way to get rid of Hinrich’s contract without screwing the beginning of the season…better to get rid of hinrich for two expirings…maybe to portland

by DRose01 on Aug 28, 2009 12:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitly a good ideia

Scola is not as spectacular as Tyrus, but a reliable guy. So, yeah, I kind of like this trade. But I don’t know if I would make it. I know that the summer of 2010 is bit far, but I’m starting to have my doubts. Geting ourselves in a position to sign a FA is good, but I’m not sure if we are going to get one. I’m starting to think they will all stay in their teams. Including Bosh. The Raptors have a nice group of players, and with the arrival of Turkoglu, I think they can do nice things this year. If Bosh, Wade and LeBron stay put, what does that leave us? Amare?

by bull83 on Aug 28, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We could have sent Hinrich to POR but that obviously didn’t happen. McGrady isn’t going to play until January at the earliest but if we can stay injury free, we can still make the playoffs with Kirk or Brad. Then McGrady can step in and provide some extra offense and then his huge contract comes off the books plus we get a reliable 14/8 PF. And Kirk’s contract is off our books too.

If Deng or Salmons get injured, we are screwed. Also it’s gonna to suck having Gray be the primary backup center. This is still a deal worth making. Having Kirk is kind of a luxury anyway. I don’t think not having either of them totally sinks the season.

I think Houston would take Tyrus and Miller but I don’t see them wanting Hinrich when they have Brooks/Lowry as the PG combo.

by C Smoove on Aug 29, 2009 9:57 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Kirk can't leave yet he has to break ben gordon's Bulls 3pt scoring record this year

so his jersey can hang in John Paxson’s bedroom

Houston Would never accept this trade

Aaron Brooks is their PG and he played well for the Rockets during the Playoffs… taking into account that Yao was out… Brooks had some monster games… and hes younger… and cheaper.
I doubt they have any interest in Hinrich… who is older and has a bigger contract…

I’ll take Scola’s consistency and Bball IQ over Thomas athletic ability personally. Plus Scola put up superior numbers in the playoffs…

I don’t see how Houston would see themselves benefiting from this trade. Even with Brad Miller thrown in. T-Macs contract year… I would rather have him for a year and let him walk next year instead of trading him and getting back inferior talent.

by 420man! on Aug 29, 2009 7:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

They wouldn’t take Hinrich but they would probably take Salmons. I don’t think they have any other SGs besides McGrady….

I think they would do Salmons/Miller/Tyrus for T-Mac and Scola.

Young PF with upside, a starting quality SG and a center who can play 25 decent minutes…their only other center is David Andersen.
