Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

ESPN still has the outdated blurb on Derrick Rose's player page. Everyone thought the #1 draft pick would take some time to get it going. The conventional wisdom was that point guards take time to adjust.

2009 Season Outlook
No matter which way you slice it, Rose is being set up to be a big disappointment in his rookie season. With talent like his, people are going to expect the world. Remember, rookie point guards tend to have a tough time adjusting to the NBA, and although Rose has the speed and athleticism to make it work, he will likely struggle out of the gate. Rose figures to earn around 30 minutes per game in his rookie season, where he’ll show glimpses of brilliance, but the growing pains will show up in the form of inconsistency. A realistic and reachable projection would be 12-13 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Technically wouldn't the ESPN "realistic and reachable projection"

have been a better season than the one he actually had?

how so?

he averaged 16.8 pts, 3.9 rebounds, 6.3 ast and .8 stl. Basically they underestimated his playing time and therefore missed his pts and assist. But they were only .1 off on rebounds and .3 off on steals. I think they are pretty close, but he was a little more impressive than they projected.

I refuse to do any sort of math, but wouldn't his PER, with the ESPN numbers and minutes,

be higher than his actual PER for the season? And then if you consider that he basically played no defense… They basically weren’t very far off, except that he showed huge flashes of brilliance, including big games in the playoffs.

I agree rose was a big dissapointment his rookie year

And that makes me more excited for this season….if last season was dissapointment rose, then real rose truly is going to be scary…

Bwahahaha!

The best testament to Rose the player was this quote from Coach K:

“I said to Derrick, ‘You were a rookie who never hit the wall. How did that happen?’
He said, ‘I play basketball. That’s all I did.’ He said, ‘You hit the wall if you are doing other things.’ I think that shows his passion and love for the game."

I like me a drink. I like me a lap dance. If I had a million and I was still 20, I think I’d like those things a lot more and a lot more often. Rose: he’s just a baller. He don’t gotta prove nuthn’ to nobody. He’s a class freakin’ act who LOVES this gameand is gonna be phenomenal I predict…D-Wade phenomenal…LeBron phenomenal…

17pts/6 assists is a disappointment???….what did you all expect 20 and 10? His D was terrible, that’s the only disappointment to me especially since he was supposedly a good defender in his one year at Memphis

Derrick Rose will never be a MJ

He wasn’t aggresive enough I thought. Maybe he will get a bit better. I think He will be as good of a player as ben Gordon was with the Bulls for all these years. So that is not saying much and he will be a disappointment to Bulls fans when they ship his ass somewhere else in about fourdiappointing years and remember you heard it from Angry Andy first that Rose will be no better than Jalen Rose
