Rumor: Deal brewing between Chi/Por/Uta
Updated with new link and ESPN story
Sources stressed to ESPN.com that no deal was imminent Thursday and that both Portland and Utah are still evaluating multiple trade scenarios. But two sources with knowledge of the three-team proposal confirmed that there have been substantive talks regarding a trade that would land Boozer in Chicago, Hinrich in Portland and Tyrus Thomas in Utah.
A deal featuring those main components would deliver the elite low-post scorer that the Bulls have been chasing for years in Boozer and furnish Portland with a lead guard in Hinrich that the Blazers are known to rate highly as a potential backcourt mate for Brandon Roy. It's possible that other players would be added to balance out the transaction from a salary-cap perspective if the three teams elect to take these talks further.

WOW.
I’m for that one.
I’d hate to see Tyrus go as I’ve mentioned, and I really like Kirk and think he’s been disrespected, but Tyrus really to me is more a SF and we have Deng and Salmons there now and won’t develop that from him, and Kirk’s a huge, expensive luxury.
Boozer fits a need (when he’s not hurt)….

Really? (2)
A one year Boozer rental when we have no chance to win next year? This would be a major admission that we’re about nothing but cap space for 2010, which is doomed to fail. Franchise white flag for the next 5 years… Give it away now. Give it away… Buh bye talent. Buh bye winning.

and continue to have no chance to win next year? I don’t understand this line of thinking. Getting Boozer means blowing off this season. But rolling with what we have means we are trying to win??

Shouldn't we be getting more back in return?
Or is ridding ourselves of Kurt’s contract and the headache that is Tyrus Thomas enough?
by dakoose on Jul 9, 2009 2:56 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree. If we get nothing from Portland this deal isn't that great
I’d still do it. But if we can’t at least get Travis Outlaw out of this deal then the deal is a C+/B-. If we can get Outlaw, this deal is an A for everybody involved. Though it makes more sense for Utah to be pushing to get John Salmons in the deal instead of Tyrus Thomas. If the Bulls did that, the trade would be really bad because Tyrus has no future in Chicago.
by paxdorf on Jul 9, 2009 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In order for the deal to work capwise.
Portland must trade another player…approximately $1.5M in salary

Doesn't matter at this point.
There are a lot of scenarios that could play out…but the move is not as simple as just swapping those three players and some draft picks…also, the Bulls are right up against the dreaded tax.

Boozer only has one year left on his contract.
by arjoseph on Jul 9, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even so
If we get him without adding to the cap it is great. We could keep Boozer and get Wade. Not bad having a line of Rose/Wade/Deng/Boozer/Noah
by JustAnotherFan on Jul 9, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We probably wouldn't have enough cap space for that.
Unless Boozer will take a contract below the MLE.
by arjoseph on Jul 9, 2009 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's with Salmons not opting out.
If Salmons ditches, though, we could maybe pull it off.
by arjoseph on Jul 9, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes we would
I don’t know the exact numbers but we can sign a player to the max and another to the full max. If the Boozer doesn’t play well because of injury he won’t demand a big contract. Also we will be able to offer him the most money if he signs with us for a sign and trade. If Bosh wants to leave a trade for Boozer will make Toronto happy (even though Bosh isn’t going anywhere).

I saw another one that has Salmons going to Utah, and not Thomas.
http://www.1080thefan.com/pages/2901628.php
That would give us a lot of cap space, with just Rose/Deng/Johnson/Gibson against the cap.
But it’d leave us with Rose and Pargo in the backcourt next year.

Which would also make sense for the Blazers, since with Kirk coming in they’d have even less room for Rudy.

by JSlakov on Jul 9, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah that gives us soo much cap room
Next offseason we’d have…
Boozer: 12?
Deng: 11.3
Rose: 5.5
Noah: 3.1
rookies: 4 combined (ish)
That’s 36 million only, and a ridiculously good roster to attract free agents.
by YaoPau on Jul 9, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Boozer would be coming off his contract though
by Option27 on Jul 9, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I highly doubt we'd let him go for nothing
unless we are signing a bigger name next offseason. I know Boozer’s history of bolting, and I know what we just did with Gordon, but Boozer is a bigger name, and I think we can get more for him than Hinrich + Tyrus + 1st.
by YaoPau on Jul 9, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Boozer wants a deal starting at 14 million. I think I read that somewhere.
Still, 38 million in committed salary wouldn’t be so bad, especially for a team that has high level talent at 4 of 5 positions (they’d just need to get a SG and get the bench replenished with the MLE and LLE). Depending on what the salary cap ends up at, they might have enough for a max FA. Not sure though, it’d be a tight squeeze.
1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box
by fundamentallysound on Jul 9, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plus
We’d be willing to let Boozer go in a sign and trade because the rest of the salaries are low and we can take on add’l salary.
Keeping Tyrus and if necessary trading him and Boozer for Wade and scrub, would be awesome if it came onto that….
If Boozer works (and he may as he’s the def of our need: offensive inside game big) might solve our issues presuming he can be healthy. THe diff here is that Luol-Noah and Tyrus or Salmons are better defenders as a trio than AK47-Okur-Brewer…so we should be able to absorb Boozer’s defensive deficiencies better (At least I’d hope in my la la la dream land paper thought).

Exactly
Boozer’s a one year rental that we’d own the rigths to. Means we can sign and trade him away with another talent for that superstar and still have cap room if we need to do so.
This would be a brilliant strategy (Fill a need with a player that on paper works beautifully with what we’ve lacked). If it doesn’t work, we have another asset, except one that everyone else wants to trade for a Superstar next year, and still have wiggle room to get another player.
I love it on both angles.

I haven't been this excited since
We got Ben Wallace and I dreamed up a Wallace-Tyson defensive backcourt and the scoring and lob abilities of Ben-Kirk-Luol….not to mention the upcoming Knicks picks (which were Tyrus and Noah)
I sure hope to god this doesn’t end nearly as poorly as that did.

This deal works on trade machine.
Hinrich to Blazers,
Thomas to Utah,
Boozer and Bayless to Bulls.
We would have to withdraw Q.O. to Gray to stay below tax.

Now if this happens THEN Luol Deng has a chance to be spectacular!!
For far too long, too many of you here have thought Deng was as superstar in the making. That simply was never the case.
BUT, if Boozer ends up a Bull then Deng falls right where he belongs in the pecking order. He becomes that spectacular 3rd option I always said he could be. The pressure will be off him to be a big time performer down the stretch as I can see the Bulls running Rose/Boozer screen-roll the entire 4th quarter of games. Deng will get open look after open look with a great guard and a formidable post presence on the floor and he will be right at home in that role and I have no doubt that in the role of 3rd banana he can excel. I even have no problem with the $12M/yr he will be paid on average in that position. Again, the problem here has always been those of you who thought he was something more and kept making excuse after excuse for why he hadn’t become more…when Gordon and arguably Hinrich were more productive and definitely more durable.
So here’s to the Bulls actually making a move for an All-Star player. I’d rather have Bosh, but it seems he has been placated for the time by the Turkoglu acquisition. But I’ll take a healthy Boozer for a season (at $13M or so for next season if I’m not mistaken).

Genius move no matter how you slice it:
Bulls get what they’ve been lacking, have a whole mess of cap space for next year, and can still make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs (versus Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, etc…). I’m gonna p my pants if theis deal gos through. Will suck if Boozer gets injured again though…

While many fans would expect an extension as part of the deal, I would find this to be unlikely in this case. Management isn’t going to be amped to take on the extra risk of an injury prone player like Boozer, not on an extension big enough to make him forego his opportunity to collect a huge check in 2010 when many teams will have cap space.
Still, if Boozer plays well, we’d have an opportunity to bring him back next season. The trade also frees up considerable room on next year’s salary cap as we move Kirk Hinrich and replace him with a very good expiring contract. The Bulls would then be able to add a maximum player and still have quite a bit more room to tweak the roster. On the downside, they’re really unlikely to tweak the roster in such a way that brings in a player better than Kirk Hinrich.

By trading Hinrich, the Bulls could theoretically sign Boozer to a long-term deal at around $12 million per season and still have cap room next summer.
i wouldnt wanna do that…
by sin on Jul 9, 2009 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We'd still have cap room, just not enough for a max player.
If Salmons opts out though, we could sign a max guy, and give Boozer a $13.5 year extension.
Best case scenario:
PG-Derrick Rose/Jannero Pargo
SG-Dwyane Wade
SF-Luol Deng/James Johnson
PF-Carlos Boozer/James Johnson/Taj Gibson
C- Joakim Noah/Brad Miller
(bring both Pargo and Miller back on the vet’s minimum).

The bulls will deny this publicly
Because it is not a done deal yet. Remember how fragile the psyche is of this team. Everyone crumbled when the Kobe talks were going on two years ago. So it is smart of the Bulls to say that this deal is just a bogus rumor, because if it doesn’t happen they don’t want to have Tyrus Thomas sulk for the whole year and totally kill all of his trade value

Sam Smith ::updated::
Sam: I got a half a dozen emails Thursday afternoon on this one. I guess there are reasons all around. The Trail Blazers need a point and seem to be down some on Outlaw. The Jazz would like to get something for Boozer and the Bulls would get two forwards, one an All Star. I’ve heard the Bulls made some inquiries about Boozer, though, as with other teams, the thinking is he’s going to be a free agent after this season and asking well into eight figures. If you are interested, why not wait and see if he can get through a season healthy before you give up anything. Portland’s a tough team to deal with and I doubt they’d do Outlaw and a first for Hinrich. Especially now that they couldn’t get Turkoglu and don’t appear to have a small forward. The Bulls got Pargo with the intention of him being a fourth guard. Not to play a major role. Losing Gordon and Hinrich could set you way back, especially since Outlaw is more duplication for Deng and Salmons. As I’ve noted before, Boozer doesn’t play much with injuries and when he made the Olympic team his college coach chose basically not to play him. Where are you going if that is your big 2010 free agent? Probably where the Jazz have been with him: Sliding backward. Plus, he pulled off what’s generally regarded as one of the biggest cons in the league when he tricked the Cavs into letting him become a free agent on the assurance he’d resign and they were just doing him a favor so he could make more money, and then he jumped to the Jazz. The Cavs should never have fell for it, but their then owner, Gordon Gund, was a handshake deal kind of guy. Jim Paxson was then the Cavs GM and all that helped lead to his departure. Paxson now works for the Bulls. So you can imagine the Bulls have heard the ugly details of that story, and you can see how anxious the Jazz is to get rid of Boozer at a time when he supposedly is their best or second best player. I’ve heard while the Bulls have spoken with numerous teams—GM Gar Forman is known as a meticulous worker and it would be no surprise he has checked every option—there is nothing going on with the Jazz.

but he isnt so greedy that he will play through his petty injuries at a time when it would clearly be in his financial interest to play and play well.
he didnt play in the olympics much, but thats because K opted at times to play bosh at the 4 and also lebron at the 4 so both lebron and melo could play at the same time. so boozer isnt as good as bosh. no shit. he doesnt want as much money either.

The official KC downplay
Rumor mill: Several people with knowledge of the Bulls’ situation downplayed an ESPN.com report claiming the Bulls had engaged in substantive talks on a three-team deal involving Utah and Portland that would land them All-Star power forward Carlos Boozer. The report had Kirk Hinrich going to Portland and Tyrus Thomas moving to Utah.
While Utah is gauging the trade market on Boozer, trading Hinrich from a thin backcourt without getting a guard in return makes little sense.
That’s enough for me

Trading Hinrich makes little sense.
Where was K.C. to say, “Letting Ben Gordon walk to a division rival makes little sense.”
If we were to get rid of Kirk in this manner, we would get an allstar big back. When we let Ben walk, we got nothing.

He's so stupid
like we couldn’t make moves after the trade. Or sign someone for cheap like Jerry Stackhouse to come off the bench for cheap. I used JS as an example but there are players that we can get for cheap for one year.
But this is the problem with the Bulls; sometimes it takes a bold move then you figure it out afterwards. You can’t always be so slow on making moves!

And like Portland couldn’t throw in, say, Bayless? Or Martell Webster? Losing Hinrich and being thin at guard is the least of the worries in regards to this trade. Get Boozer, worry about getting another BACKUP guard later. This organization really saddens me.

so wait... if get send kirk away
how does the guard situation play out? it’ll be salmons at the 2 with pargo. and deng at the 3(no1 else)??. who is there to play point when derrick is not? i thought theyd keep kirk around because BG is gone, and because everyone loves kirk.

James Johnson will be our bench 3
He’ll play the 4 some as well in VDN’s tiny ball lineups.

Really and truly, let me respond to KC and you and everyone else who's worried about the guard rotation without Kirk and say... who the fuck cares
First, trading Kirk to the Blazers would create an even bigger surplus of guards for them than they already have. And they already have too many.
So in all likelihood, we’d get back a player like Rudy Fernandez, Jerryd Bayless or Steve Blake. Or some combination of them.
Second, we’d be trading away nearly $15M in salary and taking back only $12M in salary, so we could go out and fill in with a free agent or two if we really needed to. The off-season is still young.
In short, worrying about this translates to “Oh god, we can’t trade Kirk, even if it’s a no-brainer… because he’s Kirk”.

Let's be honest, Bulls fans.
Kurt is never going anywhere. I imagine the conversations that apparently took place between Utah and Chicago went something like…
Jazz mgmt: “Hey, it’s Utah…would you guys like an all-star PF who’s known as that ‘inside scorer’ you have always coveted? All you have to give us is Tyrus Thomas, who you can’t stand, and trade your backup PG to the Blazers. Boozer will be yours!”
Gar Paxdorf: “Sorry, but losing Kurt really crushes our backcourt depth and will kill our chances of competing in the Eastern Conference next year. We like Boozer, but Kurt’s leadership and defensive prowess off the bench is invaluable. No can do.”
Jazz mgmt: “Umm, what? We’re offering to take that bonehead Tyrus Thomas off your hands FOR AN ALL-STAR POWER FORWARD? We thought you guys couldn’t stand Tyrus!!!! And who is Kurt? I thought we were talking about Kirk Hinrich here?”
Gar Paxdorf: “Well, you’re right about that. Although Tyrus has been one of our best defenders over the last 3 seasons and clearly has by far the most potential to be great outside of Derrick on this roster, he really gets to us sometimes because he just doesn’t run the floor! That said, we just can’t part with Captain Kurt…don’t ask about the nickname, Vinny came up with it and he’s a real funny, secretive guy who likes to keep things in house. Anyways, like we already told you, the team will crumble without him around. Derrick looks up to him, and our organizational goal for the upcoming season is one word: defense. Tell the Blazers we’re sorry, but unless they want to trade us Brandon Roy, then the Captain will remain here with us for the duration of his contract. It was nice talking, though!”
"Vinny continues to act like a crazed arsonist pouring gasoline on our season while running around carrying a torch yelling 'I’m in charge. Don’t any of you foolish knaves try to second guess me. I know gasoline is a liquid but I’m pretty sure it isn’t flammable and the odor gives me a natural high.'" - Tyrusmancrush

Sure.
If you replace “really hot” with “marginally attractive.” And “teases” with “talks to.”
This line from a movie, television show or other piece of popular culture pretty much sums up my entire personality.

McGraw with an update
One version that has been discussed, according to a source, would send Tyrus Thomas to Utah for Boozer, then Kirk Hinrich and Tim Thomas to Portland for Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Blake and Outlaw both have one year remaining on their contracts.

Not to mention
This would mean we would be getting another pg in return. Unlike KC mentions

2 trades
The Bulls are holding off for more Rudy? They would have a gapping whole at the 2. If it is two different trades, wouldn’t it make sense just to do the Boozer trade and keep Captain Kirk. Why involve Portland unless it is worth it. 2010? If Wade really wants to come here in 2010, a sign and trade can be worked out. Kirk will still have value next year with a declining contract.
Do the Boozer for Tyrus & TiT/ or Jeromes James.
Wait until the deadline. If team isn’t meshing, move Kirk to Portland then save some $ for 2010 and cross your fingers for Wade. Also, at the dealine, the Bulls will be able to gauge the Heat’s success.

difference is
in that trade the Jazz arent cutting any immediate salary.
by JSlakov on Jul 10, 2009 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
there'd have to be something from portland to utah
in salary: boozer (12.5) =/ = Hinrich + Thomas + Thomas (21.5) =/= Outlaw + Blake (7.6)
The Portland part wouldn’t be subject to the cap-equaling rules because they could totally absorb Hinich’s contract w/o reaching it. However, the Bulls and Jazz are both over so they’d each have to take back about the same amount.
It would probably be Thomas + Thomas to Utah for Boozer
Hinrich to Portland for Blake + Outlaw.
Then the Blazers would send a player that costs between one million and four million to the Jazz so they get enough money back.
The Jazz would get Thomas, Thomas and whatever Portland sent them (and financial relief) for Boozer.
The Blazers would get Hinrich for Blake, Outlaw and ________. (2nd round pick, Bayless, whatever.)
The Bulls would get Boozer, Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich, Thomas and Thomas.
Or something like that.

I am shocked to find out that Boozer would not be the perfect PF and so the Bulls will not trade for him
Boozer doesn’t play hurt and was and had a complete lack of ethics when knifing CLE in the back. Cross him off the list then!
Also Wade has an iffy outside shot and has been hurt, Stat doesn’t play D, Bosh isn’t really the big body post-scorer you’d like. Let’s just wait around until the second coming of Wilt Chamberlain signs with Bulls at a discount.
Boozer isn’t perfect, but that’s one reason he’s available. He doesn’t cut into cap space in 2010 and he is someone you could sign and trade and not let walk for nothing. While ditching Kirk’s contract and Tyrus (whom they obviously want to move). If Tyrus isn’t in the Bulls long-term plans, just move him now.
I fail to see how this move screws up the long-term future of the Bulls in any way, and it very well might make next year’s team better. They are probably still screwed because of VDN, but whatever.

This is going to be a sad day in Bulls history one way or another....
2003 – Kirk Hinrich (#7)
2004 – Ben Gordon (#3)
2004 – Luol Deng (#7) (via Phoenix)
2005 – None
2006 – Tyrus Thomas (#4) (via LaMarcus Aldridge trade (#2) w/ Portland)
2006 – Thabo Sefolosha (#13) (via Rodney Carney trade (#16) w/ Philly)
2007 – Joakim Noah (#9)
2008 – Derrick Rose (#1) (this was luck)
That’s the list of lottery players we’ve drafted (directly or indirectly) since “Kurt.” The only thing we’ll have to show for Kirk, Ben, Tyrus, and Thabo are (1) an injury prone, his-current-team-would-rather-keep-his-backup Carlos Boozer, (2) Taj Gibson, and (3) Portland’s leftovers.
In the immortal words of Bill Simmons, ladies and gents….these are your 2009/2010 Chicago Bulls.
btw…if Carlos actually stays injury-free and plays well (in a contract year no less), he’s going to want to get PAID like an injury-free player, in which case you can cross out (1) above.
