6 years, 42.5 million for Varejao, with incentives that could push the contract to 50 million. I can't imagine Tyrus's value is higher than Varejao's, so that's about what it'll take to sign him: $7-8 million per.

Salary isn't the only "problem" with TT

There’s also the issue of cap holds and how/when they will impact what the Bulls can do.

by hlac on Jul 9, 2009 11:11 AM CDT reply actions

I am literally confused and not being a dick

But I don’t see why Tyrus is a concern.

Right now on Sham we have the following salaries baked in for 2010 offseason:
Deng $11.3M
Hinrich $9M
Salmons (ETO) at $5.8M which he probably will exercise
Rose $5.5M
Noah $3.1M
And the option on Tyrus for $6.3M….

That totals about $34.7M (I purposely left off Demarcus Nelson). Even if Tyrus became $8M/yr next year, that’s $36.7M.

We add in our 2 rookies this year at I’m guessing $2.8M total, we’re at 39.5M.

Why wouldn’t we be able to bring D. Wade in for a first year 15-16M (presuming that the cap is $55M, more than $2M less than today)?

I have a sneaky suspicion that tricky NBA accounting will do whatever it can to ensure that the big 2010 free agency cap is preserved, even if there are warnings to the contrary….the buzz the NBA will get for the 2010 season would be too great…..I mean heck they cut the cap this year though revenues allegedly grew by more than 3%….I think they’re might be some way to play that system from a Sternian standpoint, and they are trying to add more drama to the mix to get more teams ready to strike next year…

Just a complete hunch.

Even still even if it dropped 3.5% like I suggest, why wouldn’t $16M be enough to entice Wade? I’m not as well versed in the whole cba.

Thanks.

Doesn't Salmons get a raise due to the trade?

Is that already factored in? Or is it just for this year? I seem to remember reading/hearing about that at the time of the trade.

I'm just working off of SHAM

I think I’ll post a thread on my question though because I know some on here are pretty close to cap experts…

If Varejao > Tyrus and Varejao = $7M/yr

Then how would it take more than $7M/yr to re-sign Tyrus?

by Sports2 on Jul 9, 2009 11:59 AM CDT reply actions

I hope it doesn't

With incentives though, Varejao’s contract moves to nearly 8.5 mil per. And #1 pick Bargnani just got $10 mil per. I could see Tyrus getting 6 years, $48 mil, and he’s probably worth that.

by YaoPau on Jul 9, 2009 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd pay that in a second

I still like Tyrus, just worry mgmt does not.

The max he can get right now is 5 years...

5 years, $40M…I’d take it.

My jaw is still agape

That the Cavs would so dramatically overpay for Varejao…. I really really can’t believe that kind of money.

I don’t know if Varejao is > than Tyrus. I would think otherwise (Tyrus has real upside, is younger and more rawly skilled).

I think Anderson got his because he had all the cards as really their only capable PF right now and the only one they really can get….but wow….A BAD CONTRACT.

I like Varejao, could see a 3 yr $18M deal if he was a piece like he is for the Cavs, but a 6 yr $42 that could get as high as $50M? Now that’s a bad deal. Not a bad deal 4 yrs ago maybe, but in today’s climate. Heck, how much less is that than Charlie Villanueva? And Villanueva has some real skill.

everything I've read

had Charlie getting around 5/$40

by NormVanBeer on Jul 9, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

according to

this, it’s 5/35:

Gordon, one of the top NBA free agents this summer, signed a $55 million, five-year contract in leaving the Chicago Bulls and Villanueva inked a $35 million, five-year deal as he bid farewell to the Milwaukee Bucks.

however, sure doesn’t mean that it wasn’t reported elsewhere as 5/40, just as i heard ben’s offer ranging from 55-60.

thanks

ur right, it seems to change depending on where you read it.

Yeah

But Charlie is a far more purely gifted player and at least I thought 1-3 years younger. Varejao’s a need in his inflexible team, but won’t be tradable if/after Lebron leaves….and all that walking out 2 years ago can’t help him.

i wasn't disagreeing with you

i was in fact pointing out that 7 per is what i had heard charlie got, and i agree that i would much rather give it to him that varejao.

Sorry

I think I tend to come across on here a lot more disagreeable than I mean to. I was just stating my complete shock bc I definitely wouldn’t see Charlie and Varejao as comparables….yet I think Ferry must have…..

No worries.

Getting both Anthony Parker and Channing Frye for the midlevel is nice

But yeah, the Verejao contract is ridiculous. The only explanation is that they’re so desperate to win the title next year (to keep Lebron) that they’re willing to ridiculously overpay to keep a good player, and the hell with the long-term consequences.

Eh, he's a starter-caliber PF

That seems like fair value, he’ll play around 30mpg for all six years.

by YaoPau on Jul 9, 2009 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, it's not that bad

he wanted 10 mil, which i would never have wanted to give him. for 7, hm, maybe. cause i was thinking about how much lower would be fair.

Why 6 freaking years though

I would be fine if it was $5-6M for 3 years (or even $7M for 3/years), but what I read it’s a base of $7M a year plus incentives that can take it to $9.7M for 6 freaking years….

I get the pay more because you have no options Cavs thing, but for that kind of money and length….it’s crazy.

I mean is he even near Nocioni? Last year excluded?—cuz I think Noc was still hurt from the Olympics injury….and it’s also of note that Noc wasn’t worth his contract….

took the words outta my mouth

AV isn’t even a 2nd tier player, he’s a 3rd tier…why go 6 years? They’ll be begging someone to take him off their hands in another 2-3 years.

He's a #5 starter

On a team with a superstar or two….he should be a 7th man….
