Around SBN: 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations Final

"Signing Jannero Pargo to a one-year deal was a great coup for the Bulls for a few reasons. First of all, they needed a fourth guard now that Ben Gordon left for Detroit. And since Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich are both big point guards, he can play off the ball with either and switch assignments on defense.

Second, the one-year part is crucial. Chicago needs to preserve as much cap space as possible for a year from now, when they could potentially make a run at Chicago native Dwyane Wade or some of the other juicy free agents. That's also why you're hearing Tyrus Thomas' name so much; Chicago can only get big cap room if it doesn't make him a qualifying offer, so better to trade him now and get something in return than be left high and dry a year from now."

From the mouth of an expert

But Bulls fans will still be bitter because BG got paid. BG went to the Pistons, if he would have gone to Portland or OKC i would have had more respect for him.

Whatever

We have the Bucks as rivals with Scott Skiles….plus it helps that we’re typically better of late…

And of course the Knicks, how could you forget the Knicks.

And maybe the Grizzlies because they didn’t give us Gasol when they could have had something…..

Woo-hoo the joys of being a Bulls fan when you don’t have real rivals against the powerhouses, just rivals against 2 of the worst teams in the league….

THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

yes, one year deal is good

not sure how Pargo is especially versatile as opposed to any other guard, if you’re assuming both Rose and Hinrich are big points who can defend twos.

yeah that's a risky assumption

well, at least in reference to Rose. Hinrich can guard most twos, but Rose can’t really guard anyone yet.

As almost every team in the league

is gearing up for the free agent bonanza in ‘10, I doubt any of the other possible options will get more than a one or two year deal. Unless Pargo was being courted heavily by some other team I don’t see why the Bulls couldn’t have tried some other options. Pargo has zero upside. Why not see what the market for Von Wafer or Rashad McCants is like? Every move this team organization makes should have the potential to make the future of the team a better one, and this one doesn’t. The best part of the deal is the duration of it, and that’s kinda dumb.

Let's be honest

Are we really expecting much from Pargo this year? So we’re really getting excited about the short length of a contract given to a below-average rotation guy? Is that what being a Bulls fan has come to?

He's an avg

8th man…..he’s paid well for that kind of a role (not too high).

Nobody should expect him to be more than that.

The downside of the Pargo signing

- why now?
- tax considerations
- haven’t signed James Johnson or Taj Gibson yet
- What about Tyrus?
- Were there better bench guards out there?

What we see is the club puts new people in place to allegedly run the show and the results are almost exactly the same as the previous motley crew. Might as well call the basketball operations side a stage of marionette puppets.

This Signing Is Fine

I’m viewing this signing as a combination of (1) (cheap) insurance in case one of our guards get hurt, and (2) someone else with an expiring deal we can throw into a deadline trade. If the plans (assuming there are any) are about 2010, this is about as good as we could expect. McCants or anyone else you want to name wasn’t going to come here for one year for what Pargo took. Machine Gun Pargo will have some games where he shoots lights out and other games where you want to jump on the court and break his arm, but at this price it is tough to complain.

I’m surprised nobody linked to Hanley’s abysmal article about Pargo. He cites 03-04 as “three point specialist” (career 36.5%) Pargo’s best season, where he scored 13.5 points a game. Dude played in 13 meaningless games after sitting on the bench for LA and Toronto. If garbage time points comprise your best season…

Basically I think we could've gotten an equivalent player for cheaper,

and gotten two or three of them instead of the single Pargo.
Also, Pargo’s game may have fallen off a cliff, looking at his Euroleague numbers.

-When there's less than 30 seconds left in the game, that's me with my hands cupped around my mouth yelling.
"BEN! SHOOT! SHOOOOTTTT!!! WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?"
-This segues nicely into my Timeout Management classes - order now!

who?

I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m genuinely curious about who you think would fit the “same talent/lesser salary/one year contract” bill.

I dunno ... Will Conroy?

Blake Ahearn can’t hunt his own shots, but then again he actually can shoot threes.
I mean … I’m pretty sure there’re lots of guys in the D-League who can come in for eight minutes a game and run around missing shots.
No, though, I don’t/didn’t have a specific player in mind. I just don’t think that Pargo’s game is a net positive for the Bulls. [And if there isn’t anyone available who can play his theoretical role, that wouldn’t hurt us too much either.]
