Sam seems to really salivate

when it comes to depressing the $$ of NBA contracts.

which is why I think NBA blogs have become so popular

too many reporters have pretty open contempt for the NBA players they cover, especially in Chicago.

As a fan, I want the $$$ to decrease too.

I’m not a hater at all and I even have friends that are professional athletes, but if a guy is going to get paid big money, I want to see them earn it. I even prefer the age limit be increased for entering the NBA.

Again, I have nothing against the players living their dream, or earning mega-mil deals, and I know to an extent, all players are paid on potential, but it’s really bad when a guy is turning 22 years old, eligible for an extension, and a team gives it to him because his potential is there, but they’ve not been able to see it flourish. Then he feels satisfied with being paid and doesn’t approach the potential.

Increase the age limit, then you have a guy 24 or 25 come time for an extension, so you have a better idea of what he’s going to give you over his career, so you’re paying him more in line with production as opposed to relying on ‘potential.’ And you will, in turn, reduce the salaries of players and have more money to play the more deserved veterans. And only guys that are truly worthy will earn the maximum.

Sure, some teams will be stupid and offer more cash for undeserving players, but I think salaries will eventually come down and I hope that in turn, the sport becomes a little more accessible to the common family.

Sorry for the small rant….

I guess you buy the myth that ticket prices are based on player's salaries

Actually, they’re based on supply and demand, but nice try.

I understand economics

and if you don’t think demand will decrease, you are one of the few.
And while it may be true that some teams will not suffer as much as others, the league is best served if it continues to grow and has a solid fan base.
Just wait until you see a simple ‘we feel your pain America’ campaign. It will be more of a reality that they do feel the pain of decreased ticket sales.

But this isn’t the place to debate that……

What the hell does any of that have to do with player salaries?

Teams are having trouble selling tickets because of the recession, not because of any dissatisfaction with player salaries. What, like the owners are going to reduce ticket prices out of the kindness of their hearts if they can somehow bring down player salaries? Bullshit, they’re going to pocket that money.

Well, in a recession, it's harder to overlook annoyances like dissatisfaction with player salaries

I disagree a bit with kingj41 on whether it’s people ticked off with salaries per se or the wider array of nonsense, poor play, and malfeasance that comes with those salaries, the generally poor teams with no chance of winning put on court by most teams, or the general system that’s set up to encourage those things.

Thus, I don’t think his raise the age limit to age 30 :) solution is a very good one.

However, I completely agree that such factors are reasons people are not not gonna pay for this trash forever. When people lose their jobs or start paring back because they’re scared shitless (which is really a recession in a nutshell), thy look to the most expendable things first.

And the NBA and most of its teams are making what seems to me to be a less compelling product in an increasingly tight market. There’s lots of ways for me to spend my entertainment dollars, more than ever. And there’s potentially fewer entertainment dollars to go around. So yeah, the fact that there’s a recession is part of it, but the recession is hitting people especially hard who, frankly, weren’t marketing a very great product.

This is along the lines

I was thinking Sports2, but I didn’t want to get into the details.
But yes, if you’re trying to stretch your entertainment dollar, you look for cheaper entertainment. So if you love sports, you might take in a minor league game, or simply watch at a bar with buddies instead of taking it in live, especially when the wallet’s a little lighter.
Now all fans are different, and some die-hards will still ‘have to see it live.’ But when the quality of the product becomes disappointing, somewhat, you don’t feel as bad passing on seeing your team play live. Once this thought process continues to spread, that leads to a Miami Heat crowd, or an LA Clipper crowd.
The only way teams can combat thinning crowds is to lower ticket costs, or offer ridiculous promotions. That means their earnings are decreasing. That means BRI is decreasing. That means the salary cap is decreasing. That leads to less in salary for players. It’s not a single-item relationship; it’s a multitude of factors.

I have no need to lie.

I went to Lockport Township High School in Lockport, IL. I played football and ran track with an NFL lineman, Tony Pashos. Hung out with him and his college roommate, an NFL lineman, David Diehl all the time at U of I.
I know Alondo Tucker, a Suns player because he was a shorty following us around when I was in grade school. I was in the same class w/ his brother, Antonio. And my cousin is one of his best friends.
I have another buddy, Vincent Hamilton, that I’ve known since elementary school that plays basketball overseas, and a cousin, Clarence Bates, that used to.
I’m a grown ass man and simply expressing my opinion on a forum. I don’t make things up. It means nothing to me if you agree or disagree with me. If you don’t want to read what I type, simply collapse the post. It’s your right.

He doubted it though

And didn’t he say he was reporting what someone else reported?

If we can get Anthony Parker or Wafer on the cheap

it would be worth it.
