Around SBN: Josh Hamilton's Unique Public Statement On His Addiction

[From the FanShots. Why? I'd rather try a younger player with something to prove, maybe Rashad McCants? It's so hard to figure what the team should do with the rest of its roster when it doesn't come from a mindset of winning. -ed.]

In a mulligan.

And then is 5 years we can have BG back.

Vinny "Remember, I'm Italian" Del Negro no longer has Ben Gordon on his roster. What will his offensive coaching strategy be now? He won't be able to just yell, "Shoot it, Ben!".

Marcus Fizer, Michael Sweetney and Eddy Curry should also be available.

Elton Brand too in 2010 when the Bulls have cap space.

Sweets is in with the Celtics...

Brand and Curry are not worth their contracts at this point…

I think Fizer could still play in the NBA, even given a shot…

I was just thinking the same thing

There has to be plenty of teams that would be willing to give him a better offer than a one year deal for around two mil. If he takes this he must really like playing in his hometown.

Things I like about this:
  • Pargo can fill in for 10-15 minutes a night — either spelling DRose or coming in as instant offense and playing alongside Rose for short stints.
  • Pargo is another cheap stop-gap who probably won’t command a multi-year deal.
  • Because Pargo will likely come for either (1) a cheap deal, (2) a short deal, or (3) both, he is likely 2010 friendly. It seems the Bulls are putting all their eggs in that basket. This doesn’t seem like a particularly smart plan, but hey, it is a plan, which is more than I could say before. I think it would have been smarter to pay Ben last year (6 years54 mil), keep him as an asset, and then move him in a shinier, better 2010 piece, but what do I know?

So yeah, bring back Pargo for the LLE.

Pargo should be an upgrade over Roberson,

and someone needs to be on the floor as a 4th guard in garbage time or when St. Kurt picks up too many fouls.

agreed

people complain about BG gunning and they want Pargo? Pargo can’t even play in a real offense. At least McCants or Wafer could manage to stay on the floor for five minutes without shooting ten times.

Well, in fairness, we don't even have a "real offense" right now

I think article said the Bulls were picking Pargo because he'd sign a 1 year deal for less than $1M

McCants and Wafer would likely cost more and they don’t have that much room under the luxury tax(?) Something like that.

I agree that it would be better to add a young 2 guard that has some chance, however small, to turn into a player. Even an undrafted FA would be a better idea.

by hitlesswonder on Jul 5, 2009 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, what they really should do is trade Kirk

And sell off everything they can (including Noah if it means they can move a bad contract). Get the highest draft pick they can and save as much cap space they can. If they are going to go for suck, go big.

by hitlesswonder on Jul 5, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, we still need a 4th guard.

You really want to only have 3 guards on the roster? Injuries happen.

a one-year deal and cheap. Does Wafer, McCants, or Carney sign for a one year deal? If so, then sign em up. I’d love McCants. He’s just like BG only a bit worse and crazy.

Is that an insult?

Not all that much of a difference between the franchises when you look at the post-dynasty years. We have a couple more first-round playoff exits but that’s largely because we had a competent coach for a few years there. Similar owners, similar goals for owning a team. I wonder who made more money since 1998—Sterling or Reinsdorf. That seems to be the real goal for both owners.

This move is already paying off in entertainment value

There was comment on trib site that basically said Pargo had a better handle and D than Gordon and can shoot just as well. I enjoyed that.

I think it’s interesting that so many people who watch the Bulls think Gordon basically sucks.

by hitlesswonder on Jul 5, 2009 7:44 PM CDT reply actions

Here's a little secret I've learned from careful study:

Most people don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

This is especially true in things like politics, but if you look at sports fandom, it’s not a lot different than politics. The majority of fans, just like the average voting partisan, don’t watch all that many games, don’t have a serious interest in understanding the details, and will usually gladly contradict themselves within two or three sentences of writing something. Among more serious fans, increasing understanding of the details is, sometimes consciously but sometimes unconsciously, usually a means to the end of supporting their emotional attachments.

Yo! Pargo was in the Euro League last year. Euro League isn't the NBA.

stats

I don’t know why or how europe works, but it looks like he played for two teams in 4 different leagues? Weird.

Anyways, it looks like he has decent stats over a small sample size in decent minutes for the Russia team, and not so decent stats in limited minutes for the Greek team.

Was Euro successful for Pargo? It doesn’t look like he dominated. He’s also 30 yrs old. Upside? None. It seems like a “Well we need somebody” sort of move.

In Europe, clubs do the following (if there are among the best in their country) :

1) They play for their national championship (the Greek league for the Greek team, the Russian league for the Russian team, etc).

2) If they are among the best in their national league, they play in one or the other european competitions. The Euroleague for the best teams, the Eurocup for the next best teams. This happens on top of competing in their national league.

Pargo played for a second tier Russian team first (and so did both the Russian league and the Eurocup with that team), and then for one of the top tier Greek teams (and so did the Greek league and the Euroleague with all the best European teams).

It’s that simple :-)

The Game chose him !
