Idea: Hakim Warrick to the Bulls?
Renounced by the Griz, who are seemingly hell-bent on making the rest of the NBA better, Hakim Warrick is now available to whoever ponies up. Can the bulls scratch together the money for him, or will Reinsdorf continue scuttling his profits so the White Sox can make a run at Roy Halladay?
First, let's be clearer than clear: The Bulls are light in the behind. The depth chart at the 4 and 5 are: Tyrus, JJ, Taj, and Noah, Gray respectively. That's an awful lot of skinny legs in the frontcourt. Hakim wouldn't help in that respect, but he is a legitimate back to the basket player who has never been surrounded by adequate talent.
Warrick made $2.2 million last year. The Griz are "hoping to re-sign him for less."
The Bulls, as we all know, are sitting on the cusp of the luxury tax (about 700k short as of today).
Ultimately, yes the bulls would need to creep into the luxury tax in order to make Warrick a part of the team. About a million bucks into the luxury tax. Jerry could make that back on Executive MJ Bobblehead night (complete with cigar and Kwame Brown draft card!) But instead of counting on Taj Gibson to contribute valuable minutes (can we all agree JJ is going to be much better suited at the 3 bc of his passing?), we can have a 4 year vet who still hasn't reached his potential suiting up in his place.
I'll go so far as to say Taj Gibson, from what he showed in summer league (good energy, but extremely raw and foul-prone) is the homeless man's Hakim Warrick. Kudos to Simmons for the reference.
What say you? I think Warrick would be a valuable and cost-efficient asset who is only available because of the NBA's ongoing financial disaster and salary purge. Anybody else think we could use a guy with a developed post move or two that can get to the line efficiently?

I always liked Warrick
And if we do trade TT next year for a Better PF, he would be a good Backup when we contend
"Game 7 of the 2011 Finals.. 10 seconds left in the game, the score is tied up 92-92.. Kobe with the ball he drives in.. IS BLOCKED by bosh, Rose picks it up Runs it down Throws up a pass to Wade.. WADE SCORES! GAME OVER ! BULLS WIN BULLS WIN!"
I like Warrick, too.
However, there’s no sense in paying the tax (and, as tyger points out, we would also miss out on the luxury tax money paid by others) for a position that has too many bodies as it is. If Warrick was better than Tyrus, I would say okay, but I don’t think he is, and therefore I would wait and see if we can get a legitimate upgrade or juststand pat for now.
Fine...but
Warrick is pretty much Tyrus with a slightly more developed offensive game, a little worse than TT as far as defense and rebounding. Better outside shot. He’d be a decent backup PF for cheap. He is not a back to the basket 4 at all. Mainly a slasher/jumpshooter. No post moves. Still I’d rather pay him a mill or two then waste the money on Taj.
if we didn't go into the tax for gordon
we sure as hell ain’t going into the tax for warrick.

i suppose it would be different though
if you say go over 1 million in tax for warrick, jr pays 1 million to the league….which isnt all that much (relatively speaking) i dont know the ammount they wouldve gone over, but going over 5 mil, or paying 5 mil in the tax is completely different…..not that im saying they should pay warrick or anything….
On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!
He also loses the $2-$3 million all the teams under the tax get.
This has been discussed discussed quite a bit on this site. All of the luxury tax payments are put into a “pool” and then that money is divided up among all the teams under the tax. If the Bulls go $1 million into the tax (signing Warrick for $1.7 million, for example), the Bulls lose that $2-$3 million they would have got for being under plus the $700k to get to the tax plus $1 million in salary plus the $1 million in luxury tax. They aren’t going to “pay” $5-$6 for Hakim Warrick.
Of course the logical “Bulls move” is to sign Warrick for 2 years for under $2 million per, and then trade Thomas mid-season to a team under the cap for a draft pick like they did w/ Thabo this past year. Instant savings?! Lesser talent?! Get rid of a good but unlikeable player?! Check, check, check!!!

"Unlikable"
How did this happen? How’s TT unlikable? Ugh. :(
Vinny Del Negro: Possibly the most unintentionally irritating last name in the history of last names [Hint: I can't for the life of me pronounce it correctly].
-Brandon Jennings: PG of the future!
Sure seems like everyone's just accepting as so these days.
Doug Thonus came by and said a lot (most?) think he’s a first-class jerk. Or something to that effect. It seems obvious to me that the organization doesn’t like him. When that happens, the majority of fans will not like the player.

The media helps to shape people's perceptions
so if you’re a jerk to the media, then you’re a jerk, period. Tyrus has definitely been standoff-ish with them, and after that whole “counting my money” quote came out, he was pretty hostile.
Of course there’s probably an element of truth to these things too. It doesn’t matter to me either way, because I want to see him play well, not be my best friend.
If we renounced Taj then we could sign him
And no lux tax.
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.
what if we just pulled the offer to Gray?
maybe even tell him it’s not on the table after he accepts, just for fun :)
regardless, wouldn’t signing Warrick further hammer home the point that there’s no actual plan? the Taj pick would look even worse when they could have just drafted a foreigner to not pay this year, or a guard like Ellington/Douglas.
deadline to pull the offer to gray has passed... :/
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
There's a deadline for pulling offers?
And has anyone checked to see the timing of the Bulls so famously pulling their Gordon offer?

different situation
we had the QO out for Gray, that has a deadline, but regular offers are not restricted in that way.

warrick not the answer either
I feel think this is the season that we all watch Derrick become a star and make everyone else a lot better. The young man is gonna make us all witnesses. Gordon is gone now. It is what it is. So Drose has the key to the franchise. With some playoff experience under his belt, he’s gonna create shots for Deng/Tyrus—shots that Kirk couldn’t create. I expect Tyrus to have a big year with Drose out there scoring and getting everyone involved. I think Hinrich should start with Deng, Tyrus, Noah and Rose. Hinrich should get good shots and go hard on D. Salmons and Miller off the bench. Let’s hope they stay healthy. If Gray is ever on the court then something has gone seriously wrong. Not sure what VDN is doing out there. But even he can’t mess up Derricks shine. Let’s get it!!!!!
Let's be realistic... the answers aren't coming for awhile
What I’m talking about here is increasing our true depth. To count on a rookie that some had going undrafted for quality minutes on a fringe playoff team is, well… unrealistic.
Hakim represents quality depth for minimum cost, and I think still has undisplayed potential due to being stuck in Suckville the last four years. Worst case scenario, the bulls pay a little extra and end up getting 20 minutes, 10 and 6 out of him. Best case is we find another player who can play the uptempo game with DRose (and isn’t this all about surrounding him with teammates who can play off of his game?) and maybe, just maybe is worth developing in the future. I think one thing people ignore is that whenever he plays, he gets to the line. Who else can you say that about on the Bulls’ front line?
Kig – good point out. Hard to have credibility when you can’t even get the depth chart right. It changes my argument zero, however. Miller plays the high post, picks and pops, and passes, while Tyrus and Warrick would share minutes. Tyrus gets the bulk, obv, but I like the idea of an NBA quality backup.
There are no answers at this point in the offseason. But quality is out there for proactive teams. Come on Gar Paxdorf. This is your JOB.
Who had Johnson going undrafted?
I assume that’s who you’re talking about, because Taj isn’t getting any quality minutes. Tyrus, JJ, Deng, and even Miller/Noah will get minutes at the 4 before Taj gets in.
He was talking about Taj
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rose having another option for lob passes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFdmo1_2iM0
Can the Bulls trade the draft rights to Taj Gibson for a future pick?
after seeing number 1
i wanna sign him real bad..
If we drafted a PG with the 26th pick instead of Taj, didn't sign Pargo & Hunter, and knew what we were doing...
absolutely. And we’d have a spot left over and extra money to boot. But the bulls can’t even figure out how to save money on player #13 on the roster by letting go of Gray and signing Augustine for a fraction of Gray’s cost, so clearly they lost out here.

Hakim Warrick is not a good basketball player
I’d rather see Tyrus develop than have this buster out there.

we can...
sign warrick’s finely manicured beard for much less, and remain under the cap.
I just took a look at Warrick's stats
thinking maybe I underestimated him, but I don’t see anything there. Admittedly, I haven’t watched him live much, but when I saw him I wasn’t impressed. Yes he’s a high flier, but he’s not taking over an NBA game, and seems to only repeat what Tyrus does there.
His defense and rebounding seem to be pretty bad. He’s been consistently averaging 7 rebounds per 36 minutes every year. Compare that to Tyrus who averaged 10, then 9.3, then 8.4. If Tyrus is a problem at “only” 8.4 per 36 last year, I don’t see how a guy who’s ceiling is 7.3 over his 4 years is going to be anything other than a liability at the PF spot.
I don’t see why we go over the luxury tax to get a backup PF who gives up as much as he adds. I said in another thread that i’d take him if he could replace Taj Gibson’s money and minutes, but not for anything more than that.
I don't see
where this helps our roster out at all. Basically you are going to almost pay double for a guy that is going to give you at most 20 minutes a night unless we make a few more roster moves? He’s certainly not worth paying the tax for and it would take away minutes from Thomas which I think many people here agree we did too much already last season.
Blair is not a real post. He’s 6 foot 4. He’ll be very Milsap like on how he scores (IE put backs and dump offs)..
But the point everyone is missing is Warrick won an NCAA tittle. So Pax LOVES him!

He has an 8'10" standing reach
You don’t rebound with your head, you rebound with your arms. And Millsap really sucks. Great comparison for your arguement.
Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.
by stupidgenius on Jul 28, 2009 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Heard this arguement before. I never said anything about rebounding. In fact I was talking about offensive skills. I agree you do rebound with your arms. And if I was arguing about rebounding it would make sense for you to bring up his standing reach. But once again, my comment about Blair being 6 foot 4 was in reference to his offensive game and the comment that he was a true post. Also, Milsap does not suck.

You're another idiot who doesn't like to deal in facts.
Once is enough for hyperbole. More than that just shows you’re ignorant. That, and you can’t detect the most straightforward of sarcasm. YOU WIN!

i always thought warrick
was the homeless man’s amare.
rather take a flier on a rebounder that has a post game. like ike diogu or sean may.
the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS
Sean May
haven’t heard his name in a while.
Good news is that getting him will be like picking up two post players for only one salary.
He was picked up by Sacramento
The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.
by Ozzie Montana on Jul 28, 2009 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions
and sadly
Sean has twice as many post moves as our entire roster. And to the guy saying Blair is garbage, give me a break he’ll be 3 times the NBA player Taj is going to be. If he can’t help getting 9 fouls in summer league games what is he going to do when he has to defend real NBA forwards? Between Douglas, Ellington, and Blair the Bulls really dropped the ball with their second first round pick
