to me both of them arent that great right now

but the difference in my eyes is that one has been playing with cp3 and therefore has inflated stats.
i think cp3 could do wonders for okafor if he was used correctly

okafor

was rookie of the year, and that 2004 draft class wasnt exactly weak….

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!

Chandler

When healthy is and was good. He had a Hinrich year for us in his last year here, but he was as important to our club as Ben Gordon was the year before that, and had some 6th man of the year awards.

I like the trade. The Bobcats get a better defender when healthy, and the Hornets get a healhier body…

Chandler's not a terrible contract.

Just two years left, maybe one if he opts out.

I wonder if Jordan is looking for cap relief or if he just wants to try something different with Chandler (just think of this as the Jason Kidd for Stephon Marbury, Tracy McGrady for Steve Francis type trade, only big men).

If he is looking for cap relief, I think the Bulls should try to work something out around Jerome James. Would have to probably give up Tyrus too to make salaries balance (We could have done something without giving up any legit talent, but we had to cut Tim Thomas and Anthony Roberson, taking away some great flexibilitiy in trades.)

We don't need Tyson anymore

Noah is already Tyson with more offensive skill (ball handling, passing, FT shooting)…and he’s a lot cheaper.

Why trade Tyrus just to trade Tyrus….he’s 22 freaking years old and improved dramatically last season. There’s a reason the Bulls are hanging onto him, and unlike the others we’ve hung onto, Tyrus definitely doesn’t fit the typical Reinsdorf mold….so that means the org seems happy enough with him. THey could have traded him a while ago…

Yeah, I can't see either Chandler or Okafor really being very good fits next to Noah. They're all pretty similar players

For the record, I think Okafor is the best of the lot because he doesn’t really give up anything defensively, is quite a bit stronger, and has a tangibly better offensive game.

He’s also got the worst contract of the bunch, and it will probably get that much worse as the cap declines and perhaps the new CBA sets lower limits for everything.

Maybe the Hornets aren’t ready to blow everything up the way everyone has speculated, and so they’re just willing to bite the bullet, pay the tax forever, and try to win. In that case, the fact that Okafor is a better player than Chandler becomes pretty important.

Aside, were I the Hornets, I’d be packing my bags for Seattle, which is roughly 4x the size of New Orleans, vastly wealthier, and has a pretty solid NBA tradition.

by Sports2 on Jul 27, 2009 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually like Okafor

though it’d be better if he had a jump shot. We do know Stacy King would be thrilled.

I mean how do the Bulls get involved in anything? They’re up against the tax, are only carrying 13 players, supposedly positioning themselves for 2010, and refuse to ever consider the idea of trading Kirk Hinrich.

I wouldn't mind a move of an expiring + Tyrus for Emeka,

which to my way of thinking is certainly better than a broken down, fairly pricey Tyson Chandler. Larry Brown has said – twice now – that he loves T2, and this essentially amounts to a cost cutting move for Charlotte anyway. We’d save them more money, and give them (in my opinion) the better prospect at this stage in their careers.

As for the Bulls, I like the move for two reasons. First of all, I think Emeka’s limitations are overstated. He’s a better post player than anyone we possess; a better defensive rebounder; he’s a tremendous post-defender as well as protecting the basket; he shoots 54% from the field. A front line of Emeka and Joakim would be terrific defensively and better offensively than we’ve had in recent years. I’m also considering how well Emeka might work with Brad Miller: that high-post low post action would be fairly difficult to stop. We’d have three players 6’10+ with varied skill-sets, all of whom are willing to play a role. I’m getting dangerously close to playing the “character” card here, and I won’t, but I’ll say this: it pays to have players that are willing to do as they’re asked. We haven’t had that, either…just take a look at Tyrus’ rebounding numbers.

Secondly, what’s on everyone’s mind: 2010. I doubt we’ll be seeing anyone in a Bulls uniform from the big five if it comes down to an outright signing. But how we might be able to swing a deal is via a sign and trade. Aside from Derrick, Joakim is probably our most desired asset. A healthy Deng + Joakim is probably the only deal I could see bringing us a star; and we wouldn’t be able to make that move unless we have a viable center ready to fill the gap.

A lineup of Rose/Salmons/Johnson/Bosh/Emeka would be a championship contender.
A lineup of Rose/Salmons/Deng/Emeka/Noah would be better than anything we’ve had in a decade.

Either way, I’m happy. I could care less that the Emeka/Joakim pairing is flawed, or that it ruins our precious cap-space. We’re being sold a bill of goods with regard to 2010, and we’re never going to see the genuine articles. The Bulls couldn’t get T-Mac; all they managed was Ron Mercer.

And Emeka is a hell of a lot better than Ron Frakking Mercer.

Emeka's

Not worth ruining our precious cap space. He’s not the guy that’s gonna take us to the next level, especially when we have a cheaper version in Noah who also is more offensively skilled….Okafor’s stronger and before Noah blew up I would have liked to have him, but we don’t need him now. We need an inside scorer and have to keep our eyes on maybe David West if NO decides to try blowing it up further…

"our precious cap space."

unless that’s a lie and they won’t have enough room for a max FA anyway. Then just ruin it.

I think it's a lie.

Problem is, for the same reason they’re pulling our leg about 2010…we won’t make any moves now.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Jul 28, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I was just

Using the phrase from above with the “precious cap space”. Even if we cannot get a max player (I think we can and am faithful the NBA won’t let the summer 2010 buzz dry up, they’ll find a way to make that work) but even if we cannot we’d still have some money to get a few potentially better players who could fit needs more than the redundant Okafor does already….

Not a need. That draft class is stacked as it is, and there are only so many max contracts to be signed….having flexibility can really help us even if Wade and Bosh and unlikely as it is Lebron aren’t coming here….

That's about as good a case as can be made for Okafor, I think

But I just don’t know that I can see he and Noah working offensively. Okafor is a much better offensive player than Noah, but I just don’t see how they can really coexist without pushing Okafor off the blocks more than we’d want.

I think to really make a go of things with Noah he needs to be paired with either a high post center like Miller or a PF who can play in the post but has a Tyrus style face-up game, just better (Bosh, Amare, Boozer).

I agree that we’re being sold a bill of goods, but it’s rather late to admit that after letting Gordon walk out the door. I think the Bulls are solidly committed to foolishness, but they’re at least going to stay internally consistent to their foolish plan. :(

I went to see what the Hornets and Bobcats blogs on sbnation thought about this and its a sad scene at those blogs. Bobcats I can understand, but Hornet? They had a playoff team! They´ve got Chris Paul! Sad for a former New Orleanian

Emeka is ok. He is still very limited offensively…still doesn’t have any real post moves. His contract is pretty awful though. I don’t see him helping us that much. And he’s 6’9….but has had to play center. Not really a center though.

and I’m happy to have Okafor out of the East.

pure salary dump by Charlotte. Don’t know why. Charlotte appears to be plan-less like us.

by NormVanBeer on Jul 27, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

If Chandler's healthy

It’s anything but a pure salary dump. Seriously, he played poorly last year, but the 2 years before when he was healthy I would definitely have put him ahead of Emeka Okafor, he’s one of the best offensive rebounders in the game, is more athletic than Okafor, quicker, and should fit much better with Diaw because of that athleticism….

Health is his concern, but Tyson throughout his career seems to have a bottom out year and follow it up with a really good couple of years, and I think he’s gonna bounce back. Plus he’s 3 years cheaper…

"plus he's 3 years cheaper"

you just made my point for me. THAT’S why it’s a salary dump.

Plus, lately Chandler seems to be about as brittle and Deng is. Hopefully his health will hold up. I don’t think New Orleans will be crying any tears, as evidenced by last season’s trade attempt.

Would you really want either of those guys though?

Okafor/Noah is a pretty weird combo, and Chandler is worse than Noah at this point. Maybe I’d give up Tyrus and expirings for Okafor, but I don’t know if I’d want his contract given his fit with Noah is questionable at best.

I like the deal for NO

Okafor isn’t as great of a defender as Chandler is, but Tyson’s back is made of glass so it doesn’t matter at this point. Chris Paul has another MVP-caliber season with two solid big men that can score……now if only they weren’t relying on Peja to stay healthy the Hornets would be back in the mix.

Underlying reason for the trade - ? prelude to a sale

I wonder if this is a prelude to Johnson selling the Bobcats. I believe the Bobcats save $20 million in salary via this trade. I also wonder what is the status of Chandler’s foot. He has struggled with this for about a year. I am not interested in either one of them for the Bulls for reasons cited above.

by chgobr on Jul 28, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Wonder if MJ would buy up his shares and take a controlling interest?

He might not have that kind of scratch anymore after his divorce though.

Charlotte actually seems like a place where basketball could take off. I know they’re college crazy, but if you take the state as a whole, it’s still relatively affluent, growing quickly, and not utterly small market.

But they’ve pretty much stunk it up, and that hasn’t helped.

by Sports2 on Jul 28, 2009 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

If Chandler's healthy

They may improve both in flexibility and in what they want to do….Diaw will be more prominent and Diaw moved back into his MIP type style post trade. Gerald Wallace will be the main guy offensively as he should be. Larry Brown can use Chandler to catch allt hose misses and run the court, and Tyson when healthy is a better defender than Okafor (though both are good there). Okafor might score a few more buckets a game, but I don’t think he’s clearly a better offensive player (he takes more shots, and gets many more shots blocked)…..and he looks to score more, yet isn’t all that talented. I think it’s a wash on O, a win for the Bobcats on D, and a big win on the closer to being there Hornets on dependability (less injury risks with Okafor, though Emeka hasn’t always been healthy either)…

by majoyenrac on Jul 28, 2009 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we're overthinking the reason for this trade

NO feels Okafor is better/healthier.

Larry Brown is notorious for trying to trade away everyone on his team 2 or 3 times. I don’t think this is a salary dump or anything on Charlotte’s part. Brown is simply being given the space to experiment like he loves to do.

by runningman on Jul 28, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

Could there be another deal in the hopper?

Is David West now on the block? It seems that trading Chandler for the more expensive Okafur could be the first of several moves to re-tool the team while saving money…

I’d trade Tyrus and expiring Jerome James for David West and his unhealthy back and all. He’s as good as Boozer and when healthy might be better than Boozer…

I don't really get it

My understanding was that they wanted to trade Tyson during the season to trim the payroll and they were supposed to get expiring contracts. Then they trade him for Okafor which, while saving them about $1.5 million this year, will cost them more because Tyson’s deal expires in 2011 (unless he opts out after this season) while Okafor just signed a lengthy Deng type deal. I guess they feel he is the better player which is debatable if both are healthy. I don’t see Okafor running the floor and catching alley oops from CP3 but whatever. On a side note David West has a really reasonable contract that is declining each year ($9 mil this year, $8.3 next year, player option the third year).

Yeah that's true

I just thought they were in cost cutting mode. They also just signed Ike Diogu who I liked coming out of college. If they give him and opportunity, he may wind up a Leon Powe type steal.
