Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

[From the FanShots. Interesting note below about the timing of this move. It'd be strange if the Bulls felt they couldn't make a decision on Roberson until they saw him in Summer League -ed.]

I don't think anyone expected him to contribute much if he made the team (especially with the Hunter resigning), but I'm curious about the timing of this. I thought I saw somewhere that his deal became guaranteed back on July 10th, which would have salary cap/luxury tax implications. Any capologists care to comment?

I wonder if there was any way to delay his guaranteed date

If they somehow moved back the deal so they don’t have to pay him, then no sweat.

I don’t see any evidence of this, however, and if we just waited around a week to waive him and pay him $900k when we’re already lacking in salary flexibility, this team is eye pokingly stupid and Jerry Reinsdorf would be right to fire everyone involved on the spot.

Yes, the date was moved back according to Doug Thonus.

This was discussed on the RealGM board

The consensus was that the deadline was probably changed by mutual consent. The Bulls probably went to Roberson and said “hey, we’re going to cut you if you keep this deadline, but if you agree to change it then we’ll give you a shot in summer league.” Roberson got his shot, he sucked, so now he’s gone.

That’s the idea that makes the most sense.

However, if the Bulls let his deal become guaranteed and then waived him, then they are just totally incompetent (a big possibility).

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

The consensus speculation

I mean, it makes sense, but there’s no evidence whatsoever that they did so. So until I see some evidence, it’s nothing but wishful thinking.

by Sports2 on Jul 20, 2009 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

True enough. I'm pretty sure that they CAN push the date back by mutual consent, I just don't know if they actually DID.

Which is, of course, the key thing, here.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

Sucks for Roberson

Have to feel for a guy just fighting to stay on a roster.

If he’s waived and no one else picks him up, can he just try out for any D-League roster? Or, if it’s more about the money, he could try his hand in Europe.

The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

And to lose out to Hunter. Yeah, sucks to be him.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

in related news...
Former Saginaw High and Florida guard Anthony Roberson capped his Las Vegas Summer League season with a 15-point performance Sunday in Chicago’s 93-85 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Roberson was 5-for-12 from the floor, including 2 of 6 from the 3-point line, with one steal and one technical foul.

In five games, Roberson averaged 12.4 points and may have secured a spot on the team as a shooting guard. The former point guard at Saginaw High totaled just six assists in the five games, including zero assists in Sunday’s game.

While the Bulls are fighting to not pay the tax

I found this gem on the blackhawks blog.

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

Well, the Bulls FO has been producing "horse hockey" this off-season. :(

Please don't bring up THAT game.

I actually went to that game and it makes me sick. Out of those 7 games THAT was the one that wasn’t an instant classic. I know you’re joking but i really got HAMMERED that night!

Honestly

I still have those games saved on my DVR, watched game six the other night when there were no sports being played anywhere…(Wednesday I think)…

On Roberson being released…the writing was on the wall with the signing of Pargo…the Bulls and Roberson most likely agreed that the contract would not become fully guaranteed until after summer league, so that he would get the opportunity to play in some games and maybe latch on to another team’s roster…

Anyone think Nelson is going to stick?

Ya I downloaded those games.

And I also watched Game 6 the other night. Brilliant game

I occasionally re-watch Noah's steal and dunk, so so awesome

Sometimes when I’m crying because Gordon is a Piston, I watch him grab his crotch after hitting the game-tying 3 in Game 4.

I like Nelson

He’s really athletic and can get to the hoop but I doubt if he sticks.

This Fanshot and the subsequent comments reveal 2 things to me:

1. Even a move as insignificant as this one (and the Hunter and Pargo moves for that matter) can manage to make the Bulls front office look incompetent and piss off Bulls fans.

2. We are all incredibly bored. This news got less than 50 words on Yahoo, but it’s the only Bulls news we have. And I don’t mean to belittle anyone or say that torch shouldn’t have posted this (I’m glad he/she did), but I personally don’t care two shits about this move. I’ll start to care when the Bulls make a worthwhile move.

seriously....

i am not lying or joking about this…I am soooo pissed and soooo want the bulls to make this boozer move that i am addicted to checking espn.com or hoopshype or other sites. its become an addiction and my wife makes fun of me for it. my friends almost had an intervention for me at work the other day. pls bull just make the trade and save my sanity! haha.

by K_yle33 on Jul 20, 2009 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

I thought it was just me!

This Boozer trade is the RIGHT thing to do if the Bulls are really going for 2010. I’ve been checking espn every morning hoping SOMETHING has happened! I’m not married but my girlfriend and HER girlfriend keep teasing me about my obsession with this team. I really hope the Bulls make a substantial move before the summer’s over. I can only take so many threesomes.
