Open Summer League Thread: Bulls vs. Timberwolves

Kevin Arnovitz on James Johnson:

The Bulls have a project in James Johnson. He's capable of moving the ball, looks like a competent defender, but I don't think he's realized what kind of offensive player he is, wants to be, or the Bulls want him to be. He's 12 for his last 43 shots from the field, though he's managed 24 free throw attempts over that span.

Well, perhaps getting at least one actual NBA practice under his belt will help that a little. It’s SUMMER LEAGUE people!

Yeah, but too bad it will be an NBA practice coached by...

Mike D’Antoni Vinny Del Negro! Woot!

"Vinny continues to act like a crazed arsonist pouring gasoline on our season while running around carrying a torch yelling 'I’m in charge. Don’t any of you foolish knaves try to second guess me. If I was JR I would much rather pay Vinnie Del Negro to coach than Mike D'Antoni!

D’Antoni is the most overrated/overpaid coach in the NBA. He will NEVER win a title in the league playing NO Defence! It has never happened before, & never will. So the Bulls are better off with Vinnie Del for now.

even worse, in this case, actually equals "no defense"

D'antoni will never win

The dude’s game plan is literally shoot a three every 8 seconds. That’s like trying to hit a home run every at bat, or throw a touchdown every play.

Right, because

Do you get extra points for winning with a cheap team?

Good coaches, just like players, don’t come cheap.

If Reinsdorf and his pathetic meritocracy didn’t want D’Antoni, they could have hired Flip Saunders, Rick Carlisle, Avery Johnson, Kurt Rambis, Tyrone Corbin, or a dozen other more qualified candidates for the head coaching job.

No Extra points. I would be happy with Rick Carlisle.

But D’Antoni is not worth the money. They gave Vinnie Del a chance for cheap, but we all know that Vinnie is just for now.

At this point, he appears to be a poor-man's Carmelo

I like. If he could lose a few pounds, it seems to me like he has some seriously great potential. His handle and play-making ability appear to far exceed Lu’s. Those highlights, to me, make it seem like he’s way more of a 3 than a 4. His perimeter skills are way too good to be wasted at PF, IMO.

"Vinny continues to act like a crazed arsonist pouring gasoline on our season while running around carrying a torch yelling 'I’m in charge. Don’t any of you foolish knaves try to second guess me. Well, he doesn't seem afraid to push the ball and attack the defense.

Which is good. I like him a lot more now after watching those clips. But you know that he will be playing the 4 in Vinnyball. Lu at the 3 and JJ at the 4, even though he is a small forward. Maybe we could play TT at the 5! :) small Small Ball. Damn you VINNY!!!!

by Unrealcity on Jul 20, 2009 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

We're going to have a bunch of old squabbles like we did with Noc at the 4

VDN is going to play JJ at the 4 and if his perimeter shooting is weak he and VDN are going to get pummeled in the comments here.

JJ is not a 4. He’s a SG that is way to big to play the position so he plays SF. He wants to handle the ball.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

LO handles the ball and is way to big to play SG.

Lebron and Hedo too. I’m not saying JJ is in their class. Frankly right now, I don’t like JJ until he proves he is better than DeJuan. But there are others his size that have shown it can work.

by Unrealcity on Jul 29, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

His game is so much like Pierce and Salmons

He takes the same long strides after he gets off that quick first step to get his defender on his hip.

I see a lot Pierce

in his game too. The big body and the attack mentality along with his handle. If he keeps that attack mentality and gets to the rim, he will get to the line a lot. He crossed somebody over in one of those games and got all the way to the rim for a dunk. Other than Rose, we don’t have a guy that can do that.

I think the great thing about Johnson

is he looks like he can play with Deng or Thomas effectively. I think he can be really good with Deng because of his ability to pass and create for other guys. Deng needs that to be effective.

by Basketball Smurf on Jul 19, 2009 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm excited to see lineups of

Rose/Salmons/Johnson/Tyrus/Noah

and

Rose/Salmons/Johnson/Deng/Noah

The first is pretty damn athletic, with three guys who can create their own shots, and the second would be a very good small-ball lineup that could be effective in spurts. And you’re right – Johnson seems to be a very solid passer. Deng could benefit from that with his cutting ability if they are ever on the floor together.

This is the best thread all summer league……I only see one possible addition besides the two rookies…….that might be Augustine but I don’t know about him either because I’m still feeling the heat from when he scored 0 points in the championship game against N.C. Ha HA

I feel your pain……tough loss that I still get a little emotional about from time to time BUT Augustine has put in madd work and is a controlled player who knows his role. He could give us 10-15 solid minutes off the bench and a body on the floor if Deng gets a cold or TT forgets where he is. He would be WAY more productive than Gray giving ass slaps every night. I might be a little bias being an Illinois fan but Augustine has played well despite the guards and JJ getting most of the touches.

Why does the announcer think JJ is going to have a hard time cracking the lineup….I have a hard time believing that!!! He’s already the backup to Deng in my book…..I also think from watching a few games here that he may eventually be a better ball player than Deng…..might already have Deng in the toughness and mental part of his game!

by chitownsfinest79 on Jul 19, 2009 5:31 PM CDT reply actions

I agree....

on your first idea that he’ll crack the line up. I think it’s strictly dependent on him. How well he learns the playbook, how well he develops on D, how well he can transition into HIS role not what he wishes he was. Also his attitude will play a big role and how much dedication he shows. This is the NBA and he’ll have to prove himself.

I’d have to 100% disagree with you about comparing JJ to Deng. Are you crazy? Deng’s shot outside of 12ft will burry JJ and Deng is quicker and more of a slasher…….not too mention a seasoned player in the league who players better D. I think we are all in a state of not knowing what to think of Deng as he has been injured so much the last 2 seasons BUT he was performing very well in Feb. and from what mgt says he’s been working hard and should be ready to go so this will be a year where we can evaluate Deng and see where he’s at. With that being said, Johnson could end up being better than Deng but why assume when he’s never even played an NBA game. The jury’s still out.

The only thing Hunter does well nowadays

is take the ball out of bounds. He can’t really stay with anybody anymore on defense, he can’t shoot, he can’t create for others. What a waste of a roster spot. I’d much rather see a young guy with some promise have that spot like Nelson or any number of other guys. At least Nelson can come in and guard somebody, he gets to the basket, is very athletic and may help on the boards. Hunter gives you nothing at all but a teacher for Rose which he could do OFF the roster.

Blake and Tyreke are 2 that have played way better. I think we’ve got a glimpse of what JJ could be. We’ll see how he evolves over the next few months….he’s certainly not a top performer in the SL by any means.

He’s 29th in pts. at 16.3, still behind Budinger….and a gang of others who went before him
He’s 18th in rebounds at 7.0 behind Blair AND Augustine
He’s 21st in assist with 3.5/game which is awesome.

No doubt, he has numbers so that is good because there’s room for improvement…..we’ll see.

Why would the Bulls resign Hunter before summer league?!???

why wouldn’t you give yourself a chance to evaluate Nelson? The Bulls sometimes make absolutely no sense to me.

Everyone is on the Nelson bandwagon after just summer league!!?!? I may be one of the few who still prefers Hunter……haven’t we had enough DUKE ballplayers!!!! Brand, Deng, Duhon, maybe Boozer, now everyone wants Nelson…..no more please!!

by chitownsfinest79 on Jul 19, 2009 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

Not Just Because....

I think we are all evaluating what we are seeing. If you can only have so many players on your bench and they are supposed to be filled with players that will help you win. Give me 2 good reasons why a 40 year old (almost) is going to help me win (and please don’t mention his role as a leader…hire him as a coach if then)….compared to a hungry young guy who can run an offense with sound decision making, scoring, and hustle on D? Hunter averaged 3 pts. last year. You think Nelson could average more than that coming off the bench to help a team get better. You better pray that HH or Rose don’t get hurt….you don’t want LH running anything cuz he’d be running out of breath. Sorry……but that’s what it is.

Nelson can't run an offense with sound decision making and scoring in the NBA.

He’s still not an NBA ball handler or scorer. No energy has to be wasted getting Hunter to play correctly. Is it the greatest move in the world? Of course not, but the difference between Hunter and Nelson is marginal in the NBA.

by Scotter on Jul 19, 2009 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Hunter proved last season that he is done playing in the NBA

he no longer has the quickness to stay in front of anyone, his legs are gone. Nelson isn’t some superstar, but as your 3rd string point guard, I think I’d take the guy who is bigger, stronger, younger and at this point in their careers is a better defender. If either has to get minutes, the Bulls are screwed. But all things being equal, i’d take the young guy.

JJ has

10 with a nice jumper. When it goes in…(only 37% from the floor all SL) it looks beautiful, when it doesn’t you close your eyes like you do with Thomas. He also takes a while to get his shot up…..I think the NBA plays faster and he will rush his shot more even worsening his already horrible FG%

Again, 0 ponts for JJ

in first half but has scored in the 2nd half by getting inside NOT shooting jumpers (made 1)….No he’s not a power but more of a hybrid that can pass, slash, and hit a open 12ft’r. If he can realize that this is where his game is at for now, he’ll do fine. I hope so because when he operates in this fashion good things happen. I think that because BG is gone this year, we’ll see more ball movement and more unselfish play from everyone which I hope will bring out the best in players like TT DR, and hopefully JJ and Taj as well.

Johnson a LOT more active. Driving from the elbow. Getting at it underneath. Tough fouls (which you kinda want to see from that guy in SL)

We're gonna be all right

Tuning in for the second half, this is the first SL game I’ve watched. JJ is a little out of control and careless with the ball at times, but he still looks to me like the best player on the floor. Looking like a good pick at 16. Let’s remember this guy is a rookie and will definitely get smarter and better.

I think we’ll be a fun team to watch this season and that we’ll improve over last. We’ve got a super athletic lineup, one of the best point guards in the league, and a very solid bench. If we can defend a little and get reasonable improvement from a few of our young guys we’re going to win some games.

Very psyched about JJ’s passing and quickness. I understand the Pippen comparisons. (Not getting ahead of myself—clearly I know he has a long way to go.)

But yeah, I think it’s gonna be a fun season.

by DLRoth on Jul 19, 2009 6:42 PM CDT reply actions

What is JJ doing?

Trying to foul with 30 seconds left? Odd……he need’s help but this is what SL and rookies are all about. We were blessed with Rose and have raised the standard on all our rookies….which isn’t a bad thing.

Flynn….WOW……something to remember. Nice…preview for 2010 Slam Dunk Comp.

There is a glint of bias...

when you make the asinine comparison between ranked stats of summer league games when someone says they haven’t seen 16 better rookies.

by McCabe on Jul 19, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok,

but a generalization is exactly that and stats are exactly what they are. If you say you haven’t seen 16 better player’s maybe I have and stats don’t lie regardless of the other variables involved. That was my only point. Bias means that you single someone out and have a general like/dislike towards something or someone….I’d invite you to look at all of my post and then comment. As with anything you have folks that are on or off. I’m both and tend to evaluate talent based on the stats they provide me. Not bias or anything else. I want JJ to an instrumental part of what we do and think that he can be but so many other factors play a role. Some of you act as if SL is a preview of the NBA season. There’s a reason why the D-league was invited and why you won’t see 1/3 of these players start on an NBA team…..

GREAT WIN

The Bulls lost their first 2 but improved with each game which is a great sign. Ended Summer League at 3 wins against 2 losses and that’s 3 wins in a row. I’ll have to check but I believe that only 4 other teams have won 3 straight in SL.

I think we got a good look at JJ and have an idea as to his strengths and weaknesses but he can be a good player so I wish him the best as do I wish Taj the best who showed up in game one with a double double……..

Thanks for everyone for contributing tonight. Hopefully we’ll have some top of mind topics to discuss in the coming weeks. We can take a lot of positives from Summer League and while we can’t go back and choose our picks again, we have a better feel for their skill level and what their potential role could be on our team.

Nelson came on strong and I feel Augustine did a great job. JJ was spectacular at times and showed us why we drafted him. He’s a rook so he has a lot to learn and a lot of hard work to put it. I’m not worried about JJ, I’m worried about VDN and can he put this team and it’s players in a position to IMPROVE on last year??? Time will tell.

Final Score: Bulls 93 Min 85 Way to GO BULLS!

I was at the game in Vegas

and nelson impressed me as well as JJ. Near the end Nelson drove past his defender and ducked over one of the T-Wolves big men. JJ really turned it on towards the end of the game by posting his man up down low.

JJ also had some nice passes and showed that he is capable handling the ball. JJ is a good rebounder and has the size to bang with PF’s. With all that being said Deng is eons beyond JJ. If Deng would have played against that competition he would have dropped like 60 pts. Pax was sitting in the stands with several members of the Bulls staff mostly on his blackberry working on hopefully a trade.

Johnson

could use some work on the jumper, but that’s not the worst thing in the world. I’m impressed by his passing, he runs the floor well for a 4 but average at best for a 3. All in all from what i’ve seen I’m excited to have him on our team. Oh and there are plenty of solid duke players In the NBA. And why should that even matter when all we were looking for was a 3rd string pg.
