UPDATE: Good stuff from Sham: Bulls have to waive Roberson, Nelson, and rescind the QO to Gray to stay under the tax.

From the FanShots. He's the highest paid coach on the team. But if his role is mainly to teach, why are we giving him a roster spot and getting even closer to the luxury tax? Who knows! I guess Lindsey Hunter is now a 'made guy'' in The Org. -ed.]

I though this part was interesting:
The Bulls, sources say, are determined to avoid any new contract that stretches beyond next season in the event that they shed a significant contract between now and next summer — such as guard Kirk Hinrich — to become players in the 2010 free-agent market.

So, as it stands now, the Bulls would not be players in the 2010 FA market and they know it. Considering they let Gordon go for nothing, I would hope they would exhibit more zeal in clearing cap space to sign someone.

On the other hand, they now have an excuse in place for not signing anyone.

must mean there trading kirk

I was watching the 1995 Playoffs VS the Magic's and remembered how much I hated Horace Grant. Horace Grant - i hope you burn in bball hell

that oughtta make up for

please please please

don’t let me ultra-cynicism of this franchise be true and this is just yet another PR move. It means that the real reasons to feel good about it (if there are any) are harder to celebrate.

as long as his contract expires next season

who the fuck cares? Really I am completely giving up on next season

by LoveForTheGame on Jul 13, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

That's um... kind of the point. The Bulls, and our fandom, didn't have to be given up on this season.

We could have watched a good team, and there seem to be some possibilities we could have watched a really good team. That’s why people “care”. The Bulls have lost me as a fan. If I had any leaning towards one team, it would still be them, but they probably have to do something big to bring me back as more than just a casual observer.

People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett

by tyger1147 on Jul 14, 2009 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Tyger I would consider you far from the casual observer (based on your informative posts)

For the most part the people that are on this site daily are still going to be rooting just as hard for the Bulls next season, which is kind of sad but a true fact. There’s still hope for this team in the future with our young talent and the possibility of getting someone big in 2010. The key is for our owner to realize that paying the luxury tax for top talent is SO worth it.

by LoveForTheGame on Jul 14, 2009 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

according to thonus
If the Bulls re-sign Hunter for only a one year minimum salary contract – and they’d be foolish to do anything other than that – then he will count on the Bulls salary cap as $825,487. He would actually be paid $1,306,455, as the article suggests; however, the league would pay the balance between those two figures.

by LoveForTheGame on Jul 13, 2009 4:52 PM CDT reply actions

link?

thanks, I knew the league would pay some of that (yay unions!) but wasn’t sure if they were merely not taxed or if they took $$ off before the tax calculation. The fact that the cap number itself is only that smaller amount is good news.

still not worth it, why didn't we just add him to the coaching staff?

I would rather keep a young guy like Demarcus Nelson to test out for the season then bring in a guy that should not be playing anymore. Plus, Nelson would’ve been cheaper! Vinny really does need this guy to help out and management clearly notices that. Maybe that’s a good sign that Vinny is gonna be gone!

Vinnie says for the locker room serenity

Hunter as a coach doesn’t come off the same way in the same locker room I guess.

by NBA Observer on Jul 13, 2009 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Vinny is probably worried

that if Hunter were one of the coaches, he would take over the team and Vinny wouldn’t like that

by LoveForTheGame on Jul 13, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah sounds about right, highest paid coach LOL

maybe he did teach DRose something on d. Anyway, another super DNP player to keep the rotation tight is a good thing when you got Vinnie coaching. Give us a backup point guard if Kirk is traded or if one of our points gets hurt.

by Ibleedbullsred on Jul 13, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Seeing Hunter as our backup PG

would be funny-bad. Dude is the black Scalibrini. Both look like YMCA ballers.

by dakoose on Jul 13, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

If he plays like Scal, that'd be awesome.

Scalabrini actually looked like an NBA player toward the end of last year. Alas, I don’t think Hunter can really play up to that level anymore.

by arjoseph on Jul 13, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Scal can hit a legit NBA three

I wish Hunter could do that, we can’t rely strictly on Pargo to be our long distance man, I can’t believe I am even talking about this!

I wonder if he'll report to Randy Brown or VDN

Plus who will Miller report to? Will VDN have anything to say about player development? Who will coordinate this process? So many questions, so little time, so much to wonder about.

by SoulEater7 on Jul 13, 2009 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Remember

when we were all watching Summer League to see how VDN would look as a coach. It turned out to be pretty true to form. That was EXACTLY what we got during the season. Woo!

although maybe they will fly him there to be a positive influence on the locker room. or perhaps to tell Nelson & Roberson “sorry!”

I didn't read your second line...

you’re saying Hunter is actually coaching summer league? I read VDN was?

by smash! on Jul 13, 2009 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

VDN is just going to do what he usually does

and sit on the bench with the players. The actual coaching bit…up for grabs!

c’mon.

Shorter Bulls Management: "We won't go over the cap for Ben Gordon, but for Lindsey Hunter you bet we will!"

Obviously that’s disingenuous spin on my part, but I still think that risking being over the cap for Hunter is a sign of an unwell organization….

by hitlesswonder on Jul 13, 2009 9:24 PM CDT reply actions

You realize...

They have until the end of next season to get below the threshhold…this is not an $11 per year guaranteed deal…this is Vet’s minimum, with the league paying a portion…

All in all

I just want us to be good again! I hope to God that this season is not a total wash..but all signs are pointing to it being that! Maybe they will make a couple good trades or some crap that will catch us off guard and make for a good month or so during the season?

by platinumDeeznuts on Jul 13, 2009 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

Basically.

Lets be real. Next season is just a get-me-over season. This team is gonna be interesting to watch however! I truly believe the rookies are gonna make their presence known early(especially Johnson) and i cant wait to attend the game against the Pistons. The Bulls WILL rise again!! We just gotta stick it out ONE more season!

What a group of miserable whiners!

Wah! This is a lost season! Wah! This season is a joke! Wah! They didn’t complete the trade for the overrated, unmotivated, frequently injured Boozer! Wah! They signed a player to help further devolop the future of the franchise! Boo-frickin-hoo!!! Reading these posts makes me wonder how many of you are actually Bulls fans at all. This team has a legit shot at being a contender this year. I’m not saying they could beat the Lakers in a series, but they are not the bunch of scrubs that many of you seem to think they are. This team is largely unchanged from last year, but they have added Pargo, Deng will be back, and Noah, Rose, and Ty Thomas are all one year older and wiser, not to mention the help the rookies may be able to provide. To those of you that constantly bash this team: Go cheer for the Celtics. You fairweather fans make me sick. I will be laughing in your faces when this team shows its talent and starts playing up to its potential this season. I do not see this season as a “lost season” at all. I view it as an opportunity for these young guys to prove themselves, and I fully believe that they will. For those of you writing them off before they have even played their first game, go suck an egg, you miserable whiners! GO BULLS!!!
