Some Ideas for Moving Hinrich
These are some possible trades we could do to move Kirk for expirings. Hope Gar Forman's paying attention. What do you guys think?
1. Hinrich to Miami for Mark Blount and Dorell Wright. Miami could use a PG and Wright gives us a bit more depth at SG. Blount's not entirely useless either. With him in the fold, we could probably rescind the offer to Aaron Gray.
2. Hinrich and Roberson to the Lakers for Adam Morrison, Derek Fisher, and Jordan Farmar. The Lakers are a decent PG away from having one of the sickest lineups in NBA history. Hinrich, Kobe, Artest, Gasol, and Bynum? That's pretty sick. In return, the Bulls get cap relief and Farmar, who adds depth. We would then probably negotiate a buyout with Fisher allowing him to resign with LA.
3. Hinrich to Portland for Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. This one's been said, but I like it.
Not a single one of these trades helps the Bulls in the short term, but the point is to clear cap space.

Any trade scenario that lands the Bulls Adam Morrison is excellent in my eyes.

Hinrich/Kobe
Would be a pretty nice backcourt.

Dude... if you want to move Hinrich, what you have to do is convince this team to move him
Here’s some realistic scenarios under which the Bulls might consider trading Kirk
1. For Lebron James (and a starting guard, since it’ll leave our guard rotation “too thin” if we trade Kirk for a forward).
2. For Kobe Bryant (and an unprotected first round pick).
3. Convince Kirk to turn down a lifetime contract offer from Reinsdorf.
4. Videotape Kirk in flagrante delicto with a member of management’s immediate family.
5. Get him to talk fondly and at length of Phil Jackson or Michael Jordan.

To me, a thin guard rotation is a legit concern at this point
Especially with Lu’s injury history. It shouldn’t stop the Bulls from making a really good trade directly for a needed long term piece (even taking a shot with Boozer), but it should at least give pause when you’re talking about trades that bring back a bunch of garbage.

Best I can figure though, the Blazers would almost have to include a guard coming back
Otherwise they’ll have a ridiculous logjam
by Sports2 on Jul 10, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Depending on the guard, that would be fine
I’m just saying, you’re throwing out being thin at guard like it’s some fictitious concern the org has cooked up. They may have created the situation, but it’s a legitimate concern.

Mostly I was throwing it out to say Lebron for Kirk wouldn't be sufficient for them
But honestly, how much of a concern is it? No, I don’t want to go into the year with Pargo as the third guard, but pretty much anyone that the Blazers could send back would be fine.
Likewise, if we have a million bucks left over, I’d be fine getting through the year with a guy like Bogans or Daniels.

Well, this thread wasn't a Boozer deal thread
I thought/think that was a good deal – but here the OP was just talking a salary dump for expirings. I think Blake/Outlaw could work out OK, but I don’t like either of the first two trade ideas he posted because I don’t think we’re getting enough to stay competitive this year. Getting one lousy guard back in the deal doesn’t give us guard depth, so if we aren’t getting an inside offensive threat as well, or at least a really good SG or SG prospect I think we’re better off with Kirk.
Basically, if it’s for a piece that we hope is a great longterm fit, go for it. If it is close to a wash short-term and good long-term, go for it. If it’s a this-season-doesn’t-matter-so-who-cares-if-we-suck idea, I think that plan is more risk that it’s worth. And I think a backcourt consisting of Derrick, John, Jannero, and junk is a scary prospect, unless at the frontcourt is improved at the same time.
I understand the logic behind the people saying to dump Kirk now and make sure there’s a ton of cap room next off-season – I just believe that if we don’t do that carefully we end up really crappy this season and without good free agents wanting to sign here next.

Yeah, if we're just purely going to dump, we might as well get to the deadline and get 2/3rds of a season from a good player
rather than 2/3rds of a season from a really sucky one.
Of course, there’s no guarantee we actually can dump him at the deadline, and I tend to think this season will end up moderately crappy anyhoo.
by Sports2 on Jul 10, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that is the issue
Maybe I just have higher hopes for the season than you. ;)
I think the team will be competitive. I can see it not being competitive, and I’m of the opinion that there will be some crap trade available if it turns out the team sucks and we want to move Kirk later for expirings. I agree it’s a bit of a risk, but I think it’s less of a risk than planning on sucking and assuming free agents will still want to sign.
If the season is already sucking, who cares what we get back or if we have to play a guard rotation with scrubs in it. I’d just rather give it a shot at being competitive first.

I think it'll be competitive too
just in the competing for a “1st round playoff appearance on the backs of players in their prime or past it who won’t be here next year” sense, and not in the “up and coming set of guys I can get excited about” sense.
If I thought being competitive first was a stepping stone to something awesome I’d feel a lot better about it. But it’s a lot like last year. It was kinda fun, but the end result was the Bulls engineered three games of playoff revenues by importing two aging players at the cost of any hope of keeping one younger guy (who, by the way, also had a really big part in getting them to the playoffs as well, and is now gone).

Well each one of my trades involves help at guard coming back the other way.
Dorell Wright is a little iffy, but Farmar and Blake are capable of doing a nice job 20 min a game.

I'd much rather have Kirk than Farmar or Wright
I said I was OK with Blake – I think our perimeter defense would be lousy this season, but we’d survive it. I just really don’t care for Farmar or Wright at all, but maybe that’s just me.

But I'd much rather not have Kirk's contract
It’s definitely a tradeoff.

You aint seem nothing yet, just wait until Kirk's contract expires in 3 more years
Paxsdorf will then give him a max-contract over 100+ million..
man up!

I see a pretty good argument that ignoring the short term screws the long term
Which is not to say Kirk should not be traded under any circumstances – and as I’ve noted before, as a Kirk fan I’m ready for him to go someplace he can start and anyplace that gets him away from being the scapegoat of BaB so I can go back to enjoying this place.
But, unless it’s for a starting inside guy with an offensive touch, or for someone who plays SG better than Kirk does, I think the Bulls are better off keeping him another year – or if the team completely sucks, doing a midseason trade. The Bulls will look a lot more attractive to free agents if they have a successful season, and having Kirk to back up the guard spots makes that more likely than picking up some combination of crap and expirings. I think the Bulls will be competitive this season, and I’d like them to take a shot at it instead of throwing this year away and crossing their fingers that two free agents will want to sign next summer with a team that completely sucked.

We'd love Hinrich
…well, most of us at BlazersEdge anyway. And Steve Blake would be a serviceable replacement (as many have pointed out, he mirrors Hinrich in everything except defense). And although Outlaw is polarizing to fans who either love him or hate him for his love of the jump shot, his shot chart shows that he’s very efficient as a jump shooter.

we'd love Outlaw
If the idea is to clear cap space for a run at a max deal FA in 2010 (or a trade at the deadline) then Hinny has to go. You can’t have a 9 mil backup point (even though is contract was front loaded to the tune of a half a mil descending per year). Blake is a servicable back up point, considering Rose should be among the league leaders in mins this year. Outlaw is what makes the deal work. I don’t care who you are or how big of a fan of Deng you are, you have to be a tiny bit scared he gets injured again. Having Outlaw provides a secruity blanket for a deng injury. With both being expiring contracts we increase our cap space more. Also having Outlaw as the 6th man means if the 1st half of the season ends and we are in the shitter and we want to move Deng, we can. Consider if Toronto falls well below 500 at the half point as well. A midseason trade of tyrus (we’ll never resign him), deng, and a 1st rounder for Bosh works. We then can slide outlaw in at the 3.
Pg- Rose/Blake
2- salmons/Pargo
3- Outlaw/Johnson
4- Bosh/Taj
5- Noah/Miller
I like the Hinrich for Blake and Outlaw route better than anything related to Boozer. Boozer will be healthy this year and will get a big contract, I just pray its not from Gar…. Err I mean JR.

Sounds reasonable
With Batum, Webster, and Aldridge (and potentially Millsap) there just aren’t enough minutes for Outlaw in Portland. He’d play in CHI.

Outlaw and Blake
I have never heard of a Kirk rumor involving either of those 2, let alone a deal with Portland!
