Josh Heytvelt? Pass the mushrooms!

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2009/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=DraftWatch-090604

Speaking of Gonzaga, several GMs were ranting about big man Heytvelt. “He looked completely disinterested,” one GM said. “He was awful. He had his teammates urging him to compete harder. It was weird.”

But I thought I joined this blog so I didn't have to read

ESPN “inside” information…

Shit, I didn't realize that was insider

Feel free to delete this Matt, so ESPN doesn’t sic their army of high-priced lawyers on you (and me!).

BJ Mullen

is pretty well spoken. I might take him at 16.

by SoulEater7 on Jun 8, 2009 1:45 PM CDT reply actions

Tyrus has made that move more than once, same with Brad Miller. Not all that impressive and doesn't really matter cause Mullens

stinks at actual basketball skills like rebounding, playing defense, enjoying playing basketball, giving a crap, etc.

I had to look for it again....

and then shook my head when i found it. I now know where i got that information from but looking at the date…. I think theres a reason i never liked nbadraft.net…

I mustve read it a month or so ago when i was bored and didnt pay attention to the source at all, but when his name was mentioned on the site my mind quickly recalled the information from nbadraft.net…. at any rate this is what i read, sadly the text is like two years old so when they met peremeter they couldve meant like the high school line.

It's all SGs and PFs

Looks like Rose/Deng/Noah are in the long term plans.

by YaoPau on Jun 8, 2009 3:30 PM CDT reply actions

indeed, I get why some of us would question Deng's long-term viability

but I am not surprised that the Bulls themselves haven’t given up on Deng. They just gave him $72m a season before. That’d be some serious buyers remorse.

is a make or break for deng….really all i want is 3-4 really good seasons from him..thats it..by then Rose will be hitting his prime and it can overshadow anybody else’s decline

Ater Majok is interesting

He was the #13 prospect in the nation last year, and didn’t play because (I think?) UConn was aware of possible recruiting violations. But he’s 6’10", evidently with a shot, and he looks a little too much like Luol Deng that it makes me uncomfortable. If we feel we have our rotation and can’t give minutes to a rookie, maybe he’s an option at #26 to stash him in the D-League for two years and see what happens.

by YaoPau on Jun 8, 2009 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

How does he look like Deng aside from the really dark skin and Sudanese heritage?

DX’s review of him is not too kind:

From what we’ve seen and can gather, Majok will always be considered an interesting prospect thanks to his excellent combination of size (6-10), terrific length, and the competitiveness he brings to the floor. While he fancies himself somewhat of a small forward prospect, his skill-level is extremely limited at the moment by how raw of a player he is. He lacks a great deal of strength, balance and coordination, and possesses very little in the ways of experience or feel for the game. His perimeter jumper is incredibly streaky and he struggles to finish around the basket in traffic. Defensively, he appears to be a long ways away from contributing, beyond his ability to hit the glass, as he just doesn’t have a great understanding of how to operate on this end of the floor. Since he only began practicing with UConn in January, he’s obviously still very much beyond the curve. Athletically, he is solid, but not out of this world, looking somewhat stiff in his movements at times.

Majok is the type of player who could very well develop into an interesting prospect in the next few years, but he’s way too far off from contributing to even be thinking about the NBA at this point, as weak as this draft may seem. Any team that even considers drafting him would only want to do so with the intent of stashing him overseas for the next few years.

If the Bulls did select him, it would almost certainly be a draft and stash.

im done with the whole idea of

just taking a flier on late firsters and praying they magically turn into players. matt alluded to this in the hansbrough post; there’s players at the end of the first and early second round that can contribute, and those guys matter. just throwing a dart at these high potential guys seems silly to me; you get so few draft picks, so just punting one instead of taking a player who can actually contribute is silly

by Calogero on Jun 8, 2009 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

i posted on hansbrough

someplace before, and in comparison to a mullins type (i think i called him a 90% bust…). but with more time to think about it, and spurred by your comment, it seems simple to me. or, there’s a way i can put it simply.

if i thought hansbrough would reach his scola ceiling, it’s a no-brainer. you gotta take him at 16, maybe over anyone else likely to be there in this draft. but if you think he’s the next songaila, that’s a (good, admittedly) second round pick. but that’s all. so you see, that’s why i’m not done with the idea, and doubt i ever could be.

i don’t believe, as unlikely as it may be, any “magic” would be involved should mullins have a successful nba career. (and if he happens to be well spoken, that can only be good for his chances. maybe it’s a sign that could carry over to a basketball iq. whatever.) always go for the guy with ridiculous upside, with true first round ceiling, if you like him/his chances (even slightly).

if you like hansbrough’s chances better to “star” (to whatever degree, whatever that means), then make him the 16th pick. take the “contributor” at #26, or in the second round.

Joe Ingles

- Nice to see a young guy from my own home town South Dragons team (Melbourne, Australia) , very high energy type but not sure if he’s NBA type. Might be a good second unit SF running type of player.

by Ashman23 on Jun 9, 2009 1:23 AM CDT reply actions

Ingles is intriguing from a standpoint that he’s a true wing player with excellent size for his position at around 6-8. His frame looks noticeably better than it did in the past, and he appears to be a fairly agile prospect with nice fluidity. Ingles can put the ball on the floor going either direction and has a really nice mid-range game, looking very smooth pulling up off the dribble. His perimeter jumper looks a bit on the funky side and isn’t all that quick, but he does appear to be capable of making shots from beyond the arc, even if he was a bit streaky in this setting. He has a reputation for being a great passer, but that was impossible to see here.

Defensively is where we’d really like to see more of Ingles, as this will probably be a deciding factor in how teams view him. Due to the amount of workouts the prospects were slated to take part of immediately after this weekend, we weren’t able to see anything on this side of the floor to avoid the risk of injury.

From an intangibles standpoint, Ingles is impressive, and is already drawing rave reviews in many of the workouts he’s attended. The fact that he’s been playing professional basketball for the past three years definitely gives him a leg up over many of his NCAA counterparts.
