[Update 6/9: shot down by Gordon's agent. (via BG's publicist) -ed.]

I tend to doubt it, but if this rumor is being floated by his agent, then I am guessing BG is not getting the offers he wants.

he can't be getting any offers

because the free agency period doesn’t start until July. Officially, no negotiations are supposed to be going on right now.

The NBA collective bargaining agreement doesn't cover teams in Europe

European teams can make offers to players whenever they want.

Gordon's under contract.

David Stern has some sort of deal with the Euroleague to honor the other league’s contracts, so until the end of the NBA Season at the end of June, they shouldn’t be negotiating.

Although obviously negotiations happen…such as Viktor Khryapa when he was under contract with the Bulls.

That only means you can't leave in the middle of a contract

They can still negotiate and make offers. A player obviously can’t go play in Europe while they’re still under contract to an NBA team, but they can talk to players about signing with them after their current contract expires whenever they want.

I thought KT was saying

He can’t get any offers from the NBA teams so he hasn’t seen their best offer yet

by Camry on Jun 8, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought there

were talks last summer of him getting a big offer overseas and then that ended up being a lie.

I wouldn’t buy it, I don’t think they can afford him, nor do I think he wants to go. BG’ll get some decent offers…

I can see this is as a legitimate possibility, even if extremely unlikely*:

Going over seas would do two positive things for Gordon (neither which are great, but are plausible):

A) If he goes over for one year, the Bulls will retain his Bird Rights, as there will be no need for them to renounce him this year. They aren’t going to sign anyone anyway (if they do, they’ll use an exception), so his cap hold won’t matter this off-season. Next off-season, the Bulls will have vastly more cap room so they’ll be able to either 1) re-sign him w/o the excuse of the cap, 2) take back money in a sign-and-trade if they find a good deal, 3) renounce him.

B) He is a UFA in a much better free agent atmosphere in 2010 w/o losing his Bird Rights. It might not be tremendously better, but it will be better, especially for a mid-level player like Gordon. A team might not be willing to shell out $16, $17 million for Joe Johnson’s first year, but they might give Gordon $9 million to start. Especially if the cap goes down and team’s find themselves with only $12 million in cap space instead of $16, $17. What’s easier: sign Gordon and another player, or free up another $5 million to sign Johnson.

I don’t think this will happen, really at all, but I think it has a much better chance than one year ago.

*as in < 2% chance, but still legitimate. or something

no, because he won't be under contract...

it’s not like a rookie where you can trade their rights before a contract is signed.

plus, he’s a UFA, so while we have his bird rights, nothing whatsoever is binding him to us.

from what I understand, they cannot

so I guess the RFA/UFA distinction didn’t pertain to this discussion point :)
