Derrick Rose Flashing a Gang Sign, and there is lots of smoke in the background. Probably Weed, and he looks high.

So much for that humble quiet kid out of Chicago.

Why can't he still be humble and quiet? Does getting high make you a brash & arrognat asshole?

And I don’t know Chicago gang signs, but hand signs can represent neighborhoods, cliques, crews, whatever, as well as gangs.

I was born and raised

in Chicago and not proud to know that the gang sign that Rose is flagging is one of two of the biggest gangs in Chicago and the guy over him is flagging the other. Both signs are their owns biggest rival, so that makes me believe that it meant nothing. The glassy low eyes and the smoke doesn’t look good at all.

You gotta be high to hang out with your biggest rival.

by PricanStar on Jun 7, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting.

Though, I was thinking, if they are actual gang signs, then using two different ones would be a little weird. That they are two huge rivals, yeah, they’re just being juvenile.

Where is this from?

"Vinny continues to act like a crazed arsonist pouring gasoline on our season while running around carrying a torch yelling 'I’m in charge. Don’t any of you foolish knaves try to second guess me. there's definitely no tattoos on his hands in this pic.

but you can see the ones on his arms, which according to the video that was posted here awhile ago, were done in college (just watched it again).

i believe the ones on his hands were done after that. considering one is a giant rose and the other one is a skyline, both dark (esp the left hand), you’d be able to see them clearly.

which is why i was asking how old the photos were. people do shit like this in college.

I met Derrick and his brother last week

I don’t know if his humble stuff is just an act, but his awkwardness is very present, even in a comfortable situation. Apparently he doesn’t do anything besides work out, watch movies and play video games. The only times he goes clubbing or whatever is when Reggie (his brother) gets him out of the house.

Maybe Derrick has his affiliations or whatever, I don’t share his childhood experiences in any way, and anyone who hasn’t shouldn’t really judge. All I know is Reggie Rose doesn’t look to be as great of an influence as everyone makes him out to be.

My friend's family owns a rim shop in the city

By sheer coincidence him and his brother showed up with their Dodge Challenger. In fact, he’s so unassuming no one even knew it was Derrick Rose until he was about to leave. One of the mechanics asked him if he was Rose, and he responds “Yes, sir.”

Explain why Reggie Rose isn't a great influence?

I met them both last year in Oct at the Adidas store opening (and his other brother, too). And even though Derrick was incredibly shy I spoke with Reggie for several minutes and thought he was a nice guy.

All he has to do is keep the kid from getting arrested and making sure basketball is his life.

If he does that, I don’t care what mischief or what bad influence he is otherwise.

I'm probably just speaking out of my ass

But Reggie seems hell-bent on promoting Derrick at different clubs/events. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in itself for Rose to go out in the city and have the kind of fun a 20 year old is capable of, but I wish he was cavorting with people he actually wants to hang with, not just club-hopping to different events because he’s the main attraction.

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

theres nothing wrong with getting high once in a while. as for the gang sign, i think it represents love for your people more than hatred for others. especially if the guy behind him is flashing the rival gang sign.

Guys this is not a big deal!

When derrick rose lived in englewood the GD’s protected him and his family. He was never apart of a gang but they helped him out. and of course he is baked out of his mind in that picture. Last time i checked Drose isn’t Asian LOL. But who cares tons of people smoke weed and its not that big of a deal. As for the SAT thing, athletes that are ready for the NBA should be allowed to go. It is just a way for colleges to make millions off of them. Derrick Rose is a good person and silly things like this picture should not tarnish his reputation.

Pretty dumb to let yourself get photographed smoking weed and throwing up gang signs

But then again, we already knew he wasn’t a brain surgeon. Charles Oakley once estimated that 75% of NBA players smoke weed, so it’s hard to rip him for doing something most players already do. I’m sorry though, but throwing up a GD sign is just stupid. Even if Rose is just joking around (and I assume he is), will the Vice Lords realize that? There are a lot of dumb teenage gangbangers out there looking to make a name for themselves. Let’s hope Rose spends as little time in Englewood as possible this offseason.

This photo is from college...

There were a bunch more on his old myspace page from last year, before the draft. He throws up that sign- and only that sign- alot. Every other popular member of the Memphis team threw up different signs as well.

This was one of the only “smokey” photos. There is no incriminating evidence- no blunts, no alcohol, etc in any photo.

I never posted this because I wasn’t desperate for attention. Nor did I want to make a big deal out of something that a then 18-19 yr old did. Even though it did irk me a little, I got over it.

And the gangs are mostly Asian, so Rose would fit in with them too.

Rose goes against your culture. There is no room in the NBA for a young black man from a bad part of a city who still has links to his past. NONE. You guys should be ashamed of what Rose as done.

by Belize on Jun 8, 2009 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Alright, I have to say... Derrick needs some better PR people.

Like I said above, this smokey photo was from Derrick’s old MySpace page, or someone posing as Derrick’s my space page. I saw this last year, pre-draft… and I figured the profile and all the photos were all taken down, especially with the chatter about them this week. So I just checked my MySpace account (which I never check) and noticed not only is it still active, but 8 of these photos are still up! C’mon BJ, get your ass in gear and rip this shit down off the web!

Side note, there are a few other photos from the same night/location as the one on this post and I’m not 100% sure Rose is high. It’s smokey bc he’s as a club, and none of the other guys have puffy eyes. He could just be tired or reacting to smoke…

by smash! on Jun 8, 2009 9:59 AM CDT reply actions

Okay so Derrick isn't The Pope

I think we are digging a little to deep and taking things way too serious. The Gang Signs he are flashing are something every kid born and raised in the hood has to deal with. Whether you bang or not, whether your from South Central, LA or The South Bronx, NY. We need to remember that Rose is a product of his neighbor hood and is also a young man now living a lifestyle that most can’t deal with at his age. The SAT’S, the weed smoke, the speeding, the silly ass myspace pictures all are a result of him being one of this generations young black men rasied with no father. To many of them have learned to live the gangster lifestyle and don’t understand how that will hurt them once they step outside the hood.

Just because the boy is a gifted ball player doesn’t mean that he didn’t see or get accustomed to the same things that you average kind did living in those situations. This is another reason that I keep my interest in what a player does on the court and not what they do off it. Lord knows that in my 32 years of living I have some skeletons in my closet and if my co workers and CEO knew they might look at me different. But I’m made the lifestyle change and hopefully Derrick does as well. So let’s please get past this perfect kid image we got sold and hpoe he learns to make better choices.

Hopefully the next Rose story I read will be titled Derrick Rose improves his jumper and his Defense.

Nice idea

The next Steve Nash for the Vin Baker of PGs? Great, we need that, Saboner…

Rose needs to take next season off and go into rehab— if he doesn’t just become another statistic in a drive by.

We’ve all seen this a million times before, so we gotta stop being naive. Rose would just be ANOTHER #1 draft pick point guard who decided a life of gangs and mildly illegal drugs is a more attractive than the NBA.

It’s not even weed smoke. It’s just ridiculous that someone took a photo in a club, without a flash, and Derrick’s looking sleepy and that somehow equals weed smoke and assumptions he’s high. Don’t you all see the laser light projectors hanging above them? The club probably had a smoke machine to make the lasers visible… just like they do at the UC before the laser show. Or did we all think that smoke was coming down from the press box reporters smoking out in the rafters!?
