Why do people keep wanting VDN fired?
Did Phil make it to the playoffs in his first season with a rookie point guard? Give the guy a chance.

Phil would have taken us to the ECF
with this team.

If he went to Canada and won a CBA championship
he can come back and coach this team w/o any complaints from me…
Otherwise he is awful and I want him fired yesterday.

Phil didn't make half the mental mistakes
VDN made in his first year. We seem to forget that there was a streak of about 6 close games where VDN “chose” (I think he forgot) to put D-Rose in the game in the 4th quarter. Inexcusable!
Remember when Thabo threw away the inbounds pass against Miami then lost Marion for the game-winning dunk? VDN had Thabo in the game in place of… DERRICK FREAKING ROSE!!!
How about the incredibly inconsistent rotations (until injuries and trades forced him into a solid 8-man group) that stunted the development of Tyrus and Joakim? Anybody notice how much better they got with consistent minutes?
It’s not that we expect Vinny to be perfect in his first season, but I do expect my head coach to not make me scream at the television approximately 7-10 times per game. I expect him to be competent.

Not to mention the egregious wasting of timeouts
in the Boston series.
So you're agreeing with me then?
I am in no way, shape or form defending Vinny Del Negro as the coach of the Bulls, or any NBA team for that matter.

I'm biased
so I would say yes.
But let’s not compair. VDN just does show that he can take this team to the next level. It’s little things that make the fundamental of being a coach in the NBA that he lacks.

re: king41 there's gotta be someone other than Vinny to get in here.
As long as Bulls management insists on having Vinny coach, maybe we can bring in
“My Cousin Vinny” to replace DelNotsosmart.
After all he did manage to get “two yutes” off a murder charge in his first court case and they’re bringing in 2 more yutes this season who will need some guidance (although the mighty Taj, he of the massive wingspan is 24). Another plus is if one of the players gets out of line, our new coach can intimidate them merely by saying with an icy stare……“are you talking to me……..are you talking to me?”
If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

This could mean it is less likely Detroit signs Gordon.
There was a big rift with Curry and Hamilton. Firing Curry would indicate Hamilton stays and the odds Detoit signs Gordon decreased.
Allen Iverson
gets like 50% of the credit for this firing…at least

No I'm sure that was Dumars' idea
but Allen Iverson has yet to meet a coach he couldn’t get fired…

Plus
He made the Billups/Iverson trade because AI’s contract expires tomorrow. As much as I think Dumars gets a little too much credit, he knows how to do his job and is looking at the long term.
Although his stick figure of a draft pick was a bit a of a head scratcher…
This may deserve its own fanshot
but Ford seems to believe that Tyrus and Hinrich are on their way out…
Steve (Chicago)
9:57 AM
Chad- Do you see the Bulls’ draft as a precursor to a deal involving Tyrus (and others) for an impact player?
Chad Ford
10:09 AM
I think that’s exactly what it is … you don’t draft those two if Thomas is in your long term plans. I think Tyrus will be wearing a different uniform at the start of next season. Ditto for Kirk Hinrich if the Bulls can re-sign Ben Gordon.
by Basketball Smurf on Jun 30, 2009 1:45 PM CDT reply actions
Can someone tell me why the Bulls would pay BG
after they tried twice and he turned them down, as opposed to paying Hinrich similar money. He can back up both guard positions, defend the other teams best guard and is a steady if not flashy ball-handler. Less turnovers, better D, same price? I know I will get killed for this – just playing devil’s advocate
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions
It just depends on what you want out of your 10 mil per year guard I guess.
It seems like that would indicate the Bulls value scoring.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 30, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions
For the record I love BG
as a sixth-man. I think you win a championship if he’s your fourth best player. The problem is he wants to be paid 10mil a year. Kirk’s deal was done before the Bulls lucked into Rose and if his contract wasn’t in line with his skills, then why do teams want to trade for him.
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I love him as a sixth man also
and I also love Kirk’s game. I think 10 million a year is probably a little too much for BG and is only adequate for Hinrich if he’s your starting PG. As a backup he’s just a very expensive luxury. If there was some way we could keep Hinrich around at maybe 6-7 mil a year I’d be all for it. But the contract’s already been signed and he’s worth it on the right team where he can start.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 30, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Does it matter if he comes off the bench if he plays ~30 min per
How do you feel about reports that the Bulls may play some 3 guard rotations with Rose, Hinrich, and Salmons on the court together?
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm ok with it
My only problem is that Salmon’s production is so much higher when he can play the 3 and exploit the quickness advantage he has over a lot of the SFs in the league (exluding Bron of course).
If we’re giving Hinrich ~30 min a game, coupled with his declining contract (I believe it was front loaded and goes down each year) I’m ok with it. I’m just under the impression he might be more valuable in a trade with a team that needs a PG.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 30, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Do you mean to say that Hinrich would play the 3 in a 3 guard rotation over Salmons
who started there all the way through the playoffs?
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Salmons would play the 3
the only reason Salmons started there in the playoffs is because Deng was injured.
I think it's what you said about being a back up.
With Derrick around, Kirk is nothing more than a nice third guard (for a lot of money). However, a lot of us here (including me) believe that Ben is a legit starting 2 on the right team… of course, that opinion is not unanimous (see every Chicago media member).
If BG was a legit starting two the bulls wouldn't have been able to bring him back last year. Remember....
there was no market for him whatsoever and he had no choice but to take the Bulls one year – slap in the face – offer after they pulled the long-term deal.
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions
The market was different when he was restricted. It favored the Bulls.
Why do people forget that?
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
They already are paying Hinrich
way too much money to be a backup PG. He’s not a capable SG and don’t ever call him “flashy” ever again. Hinrich’s defense is also vastly overrated…especially when he plays for a certain coach with a penchant for hair gel and retarded facial expressions. And for chrissakes BG is not not not not a 6th man. Leading scorers for teams are not 6th men. Not everyone on an NBA starting lineup has to be a great defender, especially when their biggest strength is putting the ball in the basket, which BG does about 2000X better than Kirk.

steady if not flashy
eg. not flashy.
I just don’t see a championship team with BG starting. If you do, give me an example of a similar player who started for a championship team. We can’t pay BG and become a contender, IMO.

by Ugh It Live! on Jun 30, 2009 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions
So how are the bulls gonna get KG and PP
after paying BG. Sorry that isn’t a good example.
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I didn't say that we needed to get KG and PP
in order to win a championship. You asked me to find a player who has won a championship that compares to BG – and I think the best comparison is Ray Allen, whose stats matchup very consistently with BG.
And not only that, Ray was making like $14M when they won, BG only wants around 10 – so we can definitely afford to pay a post threat (Boozer, Bosh, Amare) big money and we still have Rose.
There is no clear formula for winning a championship, if there were, everyone would be doing the same thing. All I ask is that our management act like they would like to contend and put forth the best product on the floor night-after-night, season-after-season. With this coach and after that draft, I’m not convinced that’s their ultimate goal.
"The Zen philosopher Basho once wrote: 'A flute with no holes is not a flute, And a doughnut with no hole is a Danish.' He was a funny guy."
by Ugh It Live! on Jun 30, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions
I totally agree with all of that.
It’s just no fun when everyone agrees. I still don’t think a short, phantom d-playing starting shooting guard should be the bulls current formula for a championship.
by BigforkBullsFan on Jun 30, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions
what a lazy example
there’s pros and cons to paying BG, but blindly saying “players like BG don’t start on championship teams” is just lazy analysis. ESPN should hire you. The lakers just won a title with derek freaking fisher starting; i think they wouldve been just fine with BG replacing Fisher
and here's another example
joe dumars and his career 15.3 PER
yikes! really?
I would have never guessed that Joey D’s career PER would be that average. I wasn’t expecting anything in the 20s, but still…. 15.3? That’s just the league average!
I guess this does just as much to discredit the way PER measures defense as it does to discredit Joe D. I always thought of him as a very, very solid player.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 30, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions
i remember
when he was voted into the hall of fame a lot of people were up in arms about it, and not just stat geeks; he was definitely a good player but far from exceptional. also, Dumars’ highest single season PER was only 18.0, making his PER numbers actually very similar to Gordons. I realize PER isn’t the end all be all, but it is worth noting considering Dumars and Gordon’s similar sizes and the fact that each is next to a great PG
BR Dumars Page
Sign Gordon to $10 million a year than go get Wade. Yippeeeee!!!

This still does not logically make sense to me.
Premise 1) James Johnson emphatically says he is a small forward. The organization says he is a small forward. He has a similar game to Carmelo Anthony, an effective small forward. Premise 1 conclusion) He’s irrelevant to Tyrus Thomas’s future.
Premise 2a) Taj Gibson sucks and is a 26th pick. Premise 2b) The Bulls have only an expiring Tim Thomas as a backup PF, meaning they have no backup PF. Premise 2 conclusion) They needed one no matter what.
Premise 3a) The Bulls are not going to trade Tyrus Thomas for anything other than a top-notch player. Premise 3b) The only top-notch players that are rumored to be available are PF’s. Premise 3 conclusion) If Thomas were traded for a PF, it would mean that Johnson and Gibson would still be back-ups. Would that indicate that the new PF would be primed for a trade?
CONCLUSION: This does not indicate anything in regards to Thomas.

Michael Curry had heavy shoes to fill from Pistons last 5 years
which had already start desending. He wasn’t going to start the ascending process with the existing aging players.
Still he wasn’t quite yet ready for a this situation.
Whereas the Bulls got lucky, Kirk Hinrich got hurt in the early part of the season, so Gordon and Rose were forced together and afterwards the good trade midseason bringing in Miller and Salmons helped lame duck Vinny. Also, can’t discount younger nucleous and Derrick Rose.
man up!
waiting to see the Pistons team really blown up
It’s sad that we had to see the Nash-Dantoni Suns blown up while this Detroit team has clung on for years. It’s their players, but since you can’t fire all of them, the coach gets the hook. Larry Brown got them a championship before bolting (probably just Larry’s typical wanderlust, but you wonder if he predicted he couldn’t get those players to win it again). Then came Flip, and though they were a consistently solid team for several straight seasons (how many articles did we read every year about the Pistons being “the class of the East”?), there always seemed an arrogance, and overconfidence that probably made them tough to coach. They thought they had a switch that they could turn on when they wanted, and even though that switch never went higher than “Conference Finals” they acted like they were the defending champs EVERY year. Boston’s been like that lately, whining about every call that goes against them, but with the Pistons it was every year (and the level of “the refs are against us” paranoia in their fans is astounding—way more than other teams’ fans).
Didn’t C-Webb hint that the players barely listened to the coach and they didn’t think they needed to? Was Curry really going to change that just because he’s a “player’s coach”? It’s the players, stupid. Remember that year LeBron eliminated them (Sheed loses it, the Pistons refuse to double-team, LeBron hosts a dunkathon in that last quarter)? Dumars was furious, telling everyone around the league he’d hold the team accountable by, gasp, listening to offers for his best players!! This dramatic warning was treated as a big deal in the media: Oh my! None of the starters on the Pistons were untouchable!" Of course a funny thing happened that summer and following fall: no one cared all that much. Instead of a stampede by the league to nab one of the Pistons’ starters, Dumars blamed the lack of a roster shake-up on, “ridiculous low-ball offers.” Ha, I loved that. Joe, it’s because few other teams valued your players as much as your city does. It’s not the refs, it’s not David Stern or the ratings-focused networks, and it’s not the coach (entirely). Your players were just never as great as they thought they were. Damn good at times, yes, But that championship was ages ago, and the last remnants of that group are either declining physically, or have checked out mentally.
Pent-up emotion for that rant was mostly acquired years ago—doesn’t seem as much fun to spew it out now.

How does this effect BG? What destination is better right now?
The Bulls or the rebuilding Pistons..
I mean doesn’t this kinda make the Bulls look like a more stable destination? If you’re BG wouldn’t you just try to get the best deal you can with the Bulls and be happy?
