Villanueva a good fit for the Bulls?

As much as I've read about the need for more big man presence on BaB lately, seeing that Bucks will not match offers for F/C Charlie Villanueva intrigued me. If the speculation that Tyrus won't be in a Bull's uniform for much longer comes to pass, Villanueva looks even better to me.

I understand that the frontcourt would look pretty crowded with Noah, Miller, Johnson (maybe?) and Gibson, but I think bringing in Villanueva could prove to be a financially sound move and would provide some major offense off the bench that Noah lacks. Villanueva has been described as a "soft" defender but his 16 ppg and 6.7 rpg teamed with Noah's pesky defense could be a formidable match. I would offer some direct comparisons to Noah and Tyrus, but since Charlie is such a different player, I don't think it would accomplish anything.

I'm sure this will get plenty of negative comments, but this is something that jumped out to me as somewhat realistic. His expiring contract is less than Tyrus's but he produced a lot more and seems to be nearing his prime, noted by his increased scoring and rebounding. I won't go into the logistics of salary and all of that because I'm terrible on the business aspect of basketball (I'm sure tyger can offer some perspective), but I think Villanueva is a legitimate player and would be much easier to get than Bosh or Amare.

Besides, would you be able to say no to this face?!

Does he not have eyebrows? He looks like an extra from The Adams Family ...

I don’t think the Bulls are players in the free agent market at all. Charlie V may or may not be a fit here… but I don’t think we are going to spend any money on any free agents not named Ben Gordon.

Lord... please let the Bears pick a good WR at #49....

He has some form of alopecia.

People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett

Oh, So he really doesn't have eyebrows?

That sucks.

I don’t really feel like an asshole. Maybe I should. He would be ugly with hair, so the Adams family joke still applies. And it really doesn’t matter at all. He gets paid millions to play a game I love… So, he’s an incredibly blessed person and I am very jealous of his talent and employment. I would gladly sacrifice my body hair to be in his position.

But yeah, I didn’t know about the alopecia. Thanks for the clarification.

Or free agents named Ben Gordon.

Vinny Del Negro Offensive Gameplan, Part 1

"BEN! SHOOT! SHOOOOTTTT!!! WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?"

Im all for Charlie V.

He’s consistant and has game, and he did it all on a weak team. Give em a shot!

by AFireInside661 on Jun 29, 2009 6:47 PM CDT reply actions

I would think that weak team = inflated stats,

like Duhon’s numbers for New York (particularly in the first half of the season). Redd only played 33 games, and Bogut only played 36, so his career year had a lot to do with the Bucks having few other options. His game smacks of Drew Gooden to me, which can work well in some systems, just not ours.

I saw Marquis Daniels is also on the market now. Seems like a poor man’s John Salmons. Meh.

by T-Boogie on Jun 29, 2009 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

were Pau Gasol's #'s inflated when he was on the Grizz?

some guys are really good wherever they are… not just on bad teams.

by Mr. Nation on Jun 29, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

also...

charlie v is probably not one of those guys… lol

by Mr. Nation on Jun 29, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Diff though

Is that I doubt anyone’s paying Charlie near a max dollar deal (like Pau got and deserved in as much as any player deserves that kind of dough—diff story)…..

But For 1/3rd of the Gasol price, why not flip the dice. He’s young, he provides a need, he’s cheaper than BG (who while everyone’s sugar coating it probably doesn’t want to come back to say f the Bulls)….I wouldn’t blame him.

If we could unload Luol, I totally want to keep BG….but with Luol probably stuck, and Salmons in tow, let’s address more of a need, rather than just come back with the same…..for a lot more money and now another unmovable asset for at least 2 years.

The Grizz were actually a good team (shocking, I know)

Made the playoffs 3 times with Gasol, Battier, and…….Stromile Swift, Bonzi Wells, Jason Williams.

The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 29, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

hey your right!

when I think Grizz, I just naturally think: crap team…

by Mr. Nation on Jun 29, 2009 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

No thankyou!

He’s an inefficent jump shooting big who doesn’t play a lick of defense. A quarter of his shots are 3’s and he only connects on 35% of them…I’ll pass.

by ronmexibull on Jun 29, 2009 6:47 PM CDT reply actions

35% 3 pt Shooting

Especially from a 4, is good….quite good (see the matchup issues of ahem younger Rasheed Wallace).

He doens’t play a lick of D though (unlike Wallace), but I’d hope Noah will step up his game there, and Deng/Salmons would improve the 2/3 spot more than Gordon/Salmons….

I say doesn’t hurt if the price is right. He fits a need big time that we’ve had, and might not be all that expensive.

I like BG, but it seems he’s gone anyway, so I’m tired of keeping that hope alive since it’s likely a lost cause. I also don’t like the idea of paying BG and Deng $23-24M a year in the out years…..

THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

by majoyenrac on Jun 30, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

35% is 35%...

regardless of who’s shooting it and from what position.

by ronmexibull on Jun 30, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

And 35% isn’t a terrible 3 pt shooting percentage. It’s an average 3 pt percentage. That coming from a PF is unusual and makes it more valuable since it can create mismatches and open the lane up more for Derrick Rose..

THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

by majoyenrac on Jun 30, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I was being kind with the 35%

His career average is less than 33% which isn’t terrible but it’s not good. I’d rather not use most of our cap space to sign an average PF who is soft. We just drafted a guy at 16 that can play some 4 to create mismatches and open the land for DRose at 1/3 the cost. Charlie is not a good idea for this Bulls team!!! Let the Cavs or Pistons have him.

by ronmexibull on Jun 30, 2009 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He was 34.5% last year and 33% two years ago

He had a bad year the year before….he’s young, he’s improving and he might be pretty cheap.

I’m not thinking he’s the perfect guy for us, but he’s not a bad fit, he’d fit a hole, and be another asset to part with. Of course the price would have to be right…..

He’s a probably better pick than many of the also rans…..as our team needs more offense in and from it’s post players. We have enough defenders. Charlie can get hot quick and can open the lane up more for Rose, as a lesser Lewis esque PF (but also significantly cheaper version and one with still some upside left).

Milwaukee ain’t keeping him because of SKiles…..

by majoyenrac on Jun 30, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

No way!

Our cap could be used for something more useful like signing the talent we already have such as Gordon.

by LoveForTheGame on Jun 29, 2009 8:01 PM CDT reply actions

Big surprise that Skiles

jetissoned the two most athletic scorers on that team—Jefferson and Charlie V.

by bullhockey on Jun 29, 2009 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

Any scoring power forward would be a welcome addition quite honestly.

Plus, Charlie V. was a high school teammate of Luol Deng so it’s possible that could light some sort of fire under Deng….who knows….

by lexdiamonds0730 on Jun 30, 2009 2:27 AM CDT reply actions

I agree

i just dropped a similar post but i think charlie V would be huge, he can fit with deng instantly and his style of play would really really compliment rose’s and a REAL coach can teach him some defense he has a perfect body for guarding hybrid 4’s and mixed with Noah and Deng defensively could give teams nightmares down the road. Could really fit that Odom role greatly

by BullFan on Jun 30, 2009 3:48 AM CDT reply actions

Skiles can't get Charlie V to play defense,

and you expect VDN (Mr. No Defense, Jr.) to get him to play on that side of the ball?!?!?

by kozzer on Jun 30, 2009 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

It's easy

You just switch the defenders, and switch the defenders, until you get Derrick Rose on Dirk Nowitzki.

Yikes

unfortunately, that’s the only thing I saw last year that even remotely resembled defensive strategy. Switch, switch, switch. The mark of an undisciplined defensive team.

by kozzer on Jun 30, 2009 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I was kidding….I do think in the playoffs we finally tried something else, but the switch, switch, switch crap was awful…..I do think Vinny did a better job offensively though than the BaB nation wants to believe (now here comes the anti majoyenrac posts)….

We’ll see what if anything he can do in year 2. It is frustrating that we the fans in one of the biggest bball markets in the entire country have to wait for a coach (not just a player but a COACH) to learn while on the job….but I do think Vinny improved dramatically as the season went on (of course he went from an F- to a C+ or so (and the C+ is because he was a rookie, if he were a veteran which we should have had, he’d be lower than that)….

Still he was better than Curry and Porter by a wide margin…yet now he’s the only one left….

I do hope that next year will be different, and I guess I’m the optimist and think it will be….

I liked watching BG trying to defend Kendrick Perkins in the playoffs

Was entertaining, at least from a fatalistic perspective.

Oh see

I think I was too blinded by the excitement as I didn’t see the stupid switch, switch, switch things happening in that playoff series…..

Wow, I can’t believe if that was happening (was it frequent, I don’t remember) that we weren’t slaughtered….cuz it seemed to be an awful strategy except for 3-5 minute intervals in the reg season (problem was we’d switch to the VDN-Switch Defense, it would work for the 3-5 minute intervals, and then Vinny would continue it for the entire quarter and it would fail)…

Interestingly enough, Charlie V's Drtg has been one of the better ones on the teams he's played on

Which is generally how such things are judged.

It doesn’t mean a heck of a lot to me.

by Sports2 on Jun 30, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

That's why I conjecture

That perhaps very good offensive players can wear down their defenders…..and then look better than they are in the stats on the other end.

Some of it though is crap….problem with defensive stats, but I think some of that “wear down” is a reality.

Still hate Charlie for screwing over Illinois

after Bill Self ran to Lawrence…so no. Plus we’ve got enough guys who suck at defense already.

Depends on how much $$ (I have no idea what his value might be in the league)

But if BG’s negotiations fail, getting Villanueva for maybe $6-7M/yr (A few million less) would be amazingly awesome—and I hope given the 2010 FA climate, that this is the year of the discount….

Rose-Hinrich
Salmons-Hinrich
Deng-Salmons-Tyrus Thomas
Tyrus Thomas-Charlie Villanueva
Noah-Miller

That’s a solid lineup, of course the rooks might get some burn, but this can take some rookie pressure off….
