Well we know Thabo won't (like last year), and I doubt Derrick will since he's been in LA...
Linton Johnson is the “Bulls Celebrity” at the Bulls day at the Taste today, so he won’t be there to say hello to the boys who push him off the roster. Tyrus or Noah could show… Deng’s ass better be there.

It's placed rather well
I’ll call it a process of success.

No, but there might be cheese doodles hiding behind the speaker pole.

Does anyone have a link? Unfortunately I don't live in Chicago anymore.
If not if anyone is watching the press conference could you update the rest of Bulls Nation on what is happening?
No online stream. Only on CSN.
They will probably have audio on Bulls.com in about an hour.

James Johnson spells sounds bites!
His agent needs to school him in Meet the Press 101 and teach him that when you’re mic’d up everyone can hear it when you curse! Let’s see, in his very first press conference he looked like he was miserable and had some memorable moments that I doubt the Bulls will be releasing via video:
- he said (under his breath to Taj) of Sam Smith “He’s crazy” while Smith was asking a question
- he said “shit” twice in a row after a question about when he and Taj had contacted each other after the draft
- he said he wanted Number 5 and when someone suggested, jokingly, that Pax’s # should be retired, he said “I don’t think it should”
- During one of the last questions, JJ turned to Taj and said “Damn, hope this is for you”
God, JJ’s demeanor really reminds me of Tyrus Thomas, year one. At times he was completely fine and likable, and he was very presentable. But he mostly just looked like a kid in calculus class hoping the teacher wouldn’t pick him. He and Sam Smith had a few back and forths that were really akward… kinda like watching the Office. This will be fun! Taj on the other hand seems like a Thabo- simple, nice guy.
Looks like JJ will wear 16 and Taj will wear 22. No sign of Pax or any other Bull… that doesn’t mean they weren’t there, just that no one else was televised.

Well that certainly jives with what people were saying about Johnson being an ass at WF

He's one of the top martial artists in the world.
I don’t expect a great fighter to be particularly nice. I think the Bulls drafted him, in part, to finally have a real enforcer.

Yes...he is not a good boy. The Bulls have too many good boys. We need someone
with an edge.

JJ still has a soft side
His pre-draft workouts videos show him saying over and over again how nice it is to do workouts with Earl Clark because they know eachother. At the Combine he said it was great to “see everyone again” in reference to how he knows most of the guys at the combine from his AAU days.
I want to find out more about how long he has been based on out Cheyenne, Wyoming. That isn’t exactly basketball country.

No one said he was incapable of saying something normal like "I like working out with Clark"
He just came as someone who wasn’t very excited to be there and didn’t want to answer any questions. Remember Derrick Rose last year at this press conference? Think “polar opposite.”
As for his past in Wyoming, he received a few questions about WY. He said his military family moved there from Cali when he was 9 and his Dad retired. He didn’t play AAU until he was a Jr. When asked what else he did in WY other than fight, and play bball and football (WR) in high school, he said one word: “Golf.”
That's awesome
If an MMA fight ever breaks out during a game, we’ll be in great shape.

That's what I've told people who were pumping up Johnson as the anti-Tyrus before the draft.
There basically the same type of guy with just different body types and skill sets. They’re going to have similar on and off the court issues.
Who are these people you keep talking about?
for that matter, I don’t remember Tyrus cursing in interviews or stuff like that. If I remember correctly about Tyrus, his issues were in how how he treated people (non player Bulls employees, league officials) and various whispers about him not working super hard in practice situations.
That’s sort of a different set of issue than a guy who’s been described by teammates as a nice guy who could break you in half if he wanted to.
Johnson doesn't have a reputation for working super hard in practice situations or for giving consistent effort in games.
Neither went to a school that focused much on teaching them how to play basketball. Neither was very mature and media savvy coming out of college. Johnson developed a rap for performing poorly in interviews leading up to the draft. That may have partly been a smokescreen, but it only works if there is some truth to it.
On the court these are two low basketball I.Q. guys who didn’t start playing serious basketball until later in life. They both are prone to making poor decisions with the ball. James Johnson isn’t any more likely to give the ball to the point guard than Tyrus is for those that like to complain about that. They pretty much want to be the same kind of player, a go-to SF that handles the ball a lot. Whether or not Tyrus swore in front of the media or not is basically immaterial given the overall similarities.
by Scotter on Jun 29, 2009 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Not really
Tyrus’ rep is that up to this past year, he’s treated “the little people” like garbage. Johnson does not have that rep.
Johnson really doesn’t have much rep at all in my opinion, given that he’s not even been a Bull for a week. Drawing the conclusions you’re drawing, based on his time at Wake Forest, vs. drawing the conclusions you’ve drawn about Tyrus in three years in the NBA seems pretty tenuous. I mean, Tyrus himself doesn’t exactly play the way he played at LSU, in the limited amount of time I saw him.
Anyway, I don’t see the need to start pigeon-holing him as, really, much like Tyrus at all.
who called Johnson the anti-tyrus thomas? I never seen anyone use that description
by Basketball Smurf on Jun 29, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Not here very much because Blogabull has a specific viewpoint to some extent, and very view people
were fans of James Johnson here. James Johnson had big fans other places on the internet and off the internet. There were a number of Bulls fan who hate Tyrus, but were in love with Johnson. People who though Johnson was the answer at PF, and would be the starting PF next year. They never used the specific phrase anti-Tyrus, but it summarizes their views.
"- he said "shit" twice in a row after a question about when he and Taj had contacted each other after the draft"
Funny, that’s what a lot of people said on here after the Bulls drafted him.

It was funny, because it wasn't like I was offended by him saying it, and he was smiling for that comment...
I was just shocked how casually he was cursing, sitting next to Gar, on live TV, with the mic 3 inches from his face.
99% talent, 1% intellect?
it amazes me
that this guy came from a military family. you’d think he’d conduct himself in a more respectful way.
I care about the not thinking before you speak part just bc I don't want it to translate to something on the court...
like nothing thinking before you jack up a terrible transition 3, which was the knock on him at WF. We’ll see…
The people that curse the most
are often ex-military.

And they curse the best too.
Though most I know still only curse when they are around friends while in a professional setting are perfectly polite (until they are over 70 and then they let loose whenever they darn feel like it).
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
I've always enjoyed listening to players talk before they've had their media relations training
You get a real insight into their personalities, for better or worse. Like when Tyrus made his comment during his rookie year about going to the dunk contest for the “free money” – it was obviously a dumb thing to say, but it told us more about him than some carefully crafted statement would have.

I know what you mean...
I was thinking, it would be great to see footage from when Tyrus was introduced at his first Press Conf. I don’t remember it at all.
Great start
Smith only spent a two years bad mouthing Tyrus, so JJ goes and pisses him off right out of the gate. Cool.
Johnson whispered something to Gibson after a question
like man this sucks or something and it pretty much went into the mic. Jeez dude.
Ha! Surprised they posted this...
Well, at least you can’t see JJ’s facial displeasure in the audio. I think he comes off better on the audio than it did live. And you can’t really hear the comment about Sam Smith being crazy (@ 8:05), but you can hear the double “shit” after KC asks them when they called each other after draft night (@ 10:19), and the “Damn, I hope this is for you!” (@ 19:51).
The best part of the conf was when James was asked if he could beat up everyone else on the court and he said “probably so.” Loved that.
Jeez
From Johnson…
“I’m a 3.”
“I’m comfortable as a 3.”
“I play the 3, but I played the 4 at WF.”

If anything, everyone but Kobe should freely speak their minds
So the bullshit level of the NBA could decrease by about 500%.

Well, they can talk
but they gotta realize what comes out of their mouths will give them a reputation. I don’t always speak my mind at my job. I’d get fired. I do take risks and say what I think when it seems either appropriate or worth a battle over. I’d say a press conference isn’t where you should be flying free and easy. Wait until you are famous and Larry King wants a quote. Otherwise have a little fun but stay professional. You are at work after all.
If I had a player who wasn’t good at talking I’d rather have the Rose type who would at least resort to “Yes sir” over guys who are bad at talking and curse on top of it.

you work in an office, johnson works on a basketball court
i hate when people try to compare the two. The rules that apply to your job don’t apply to them. This seems to be a point of consternation for a lot of people, I personally could care less. Do you have a contract? Are you employed based on your ability to score points and rebounds? Do people at your job worry about your weight?
If they don’t care about their reputation, than are they allowed to curse?
There are tons of jobs where people are allowed to curse up a storm, sports being one of them. Its not like their potential employers don’t curse either. I think Scott Skiles would let the expletives fly now and than, in range of cameras and microphones. Some coaches are known for letting the expletives fly, but I guess that its just Bobby Knight being Bobby Knight. If he were cursing out one of the reporters or cursing at an official, than I would think you had a point. The inability to watch your mouth is not a requirement for pro basketball players jobs, even if it is requirement for our jobs.

They are at a press conference
and like I said, there is a time and a place. I can say things where I work during the appropriate times as I stated. Doing it in front of clients is never a good idea though.
Good coaches use it strategically after games. Good players might do it in the locker room to get the team going. What reason does this kid have? Was he trying to motivate his team? Was it in any way smart to show that kind of weakness in front of the press? No. These press conference gigs are completely different from putting the ball into the basket but it is still part of his job. Is this how they talk while doing kids camp or Habitat for Humanity or signing autographs at the mall? They are hired to do basketball as well as those other team commitments that require some tact even if you have to fake it. It isn’t even that hard to do right which is why it is surprising he was stupid enough to slip up so badly.
I am sure this has zero to do with how well he does or not on the court, but it is still stupid and you can bet he’s been reminded of his job requirements.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
he said it under his breath, half laughing,
accidentally into his microphone. I’m sure his handlers with the Bulls said something, but they obviously weren’t that embarrassed because its on bulls.com. I understand he shouldn’t have said it. But its not a big deal and not something that proves him to be stupid or a malcontent. If anything, it just shows he’s inexperienced.
I’ve known a good many people in my profession to curse and say very impolite things in front of clients. I know some clients to event like it. They are just words.
Don’t worry. He will go to his NBA training camp and he will learn to be a good little automaton like Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng and the rest of the Bulls. “The game was very tough. We have to play hard. It is all a process.”

What you say is true, but...
there is a significant number of folks who get seriously pissed about such things.
In my experience, there are more folks who get pissed off than who like it. Don’t kid yourself. The NBA is not exactly growing legions of new fans every day. Especially in the US. Guys like us might get a chuckle out of it, and the more frequently these guys come off like amateurs and clueless jerks, the more often people say screw it and tune them out.
The next thing you know, we’ll be having to “make up for it” by drafting Tyler Hansbrough as self-punishment.
