Doesn't sound so bad to me
The Chicago Bulls, desperately in need of an interior scoring option, takes James Johnson out of Wake Forest. He’s kind of a 3/4 hybrid, but will play power forward on this roster. The Bulls are one of the most exciting up-and-coming teams in this league, and Johnson is an excellent fit for them. He’ll be able to play pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop with Derrick Rose, thanks to his perimeter shooting ability and his varied offensive attack. He’s not a terribly explosive leaper, but that’s what Chicago has Ty Thomas for. He can also back a guy down and score in an isolation situation on the block. Solid pick.

Looks like all that 'defensive improvement' talk was for naught
Without the ball in his hands, Johnson is a big bodied screener and has an excellent ability to run the pick and pop and pick and roll. He also is a favorite option to finish lobs where he can really use his great physicality.
Defensively, Johnson doesn’t have great off-ball instincts and frequently finds himself out of position where he is unable to provide help to his teamm

ESPN says
The Bulls have wanted Johnson for a while. He’s a good athlete who can play the 3 and the 4 on both ends of the floor. His game needs to develop, but when he gets going, he’s something. He reminds me a little of Chicago’s Tyrus Thomas in one way — he’ll play great one minute and have his coach pulling his hair out the next. With Thomas on the trade block, Johnson may ultimately be his replacement.

James Johnson
Strengths: Extremely skilled and versatile forward … Great physical package, combining size, strength, athleticism and an impressive 7’1 wingspan … His frame is very nicely developed, with strong shoulders and a wide base …He has a very refined scoring touch and knows how to put the ball in the basket … Proved that he is very comfortable handling the ball in all situations, including in transition while going full speed and still keeping his head up, looking to make plays … Has shown that he excels in a point forward role, where he can use his playmaking ability to create for teammates and himself … He has advanced moves off the dribble; hesitation, crossover, spins, in& outs as well as nice ability to make a second counter move … Has a lot of confidence in his outside shot, and proved that he has range beyond the college 3 … … Operates nicely out of the triple threat, where he utilizes a good shot fake as well as long jabs that get the defender off balance … His game is extremely potent out of the mid to high post where he can face up and attack or back people down … He is very comfortable going to and finishing with both hands … Using his size and length while attacking, he is able to protect the ball and finish with extreme efficiency … He’s good at keeping his balance while attacking contact, which gives him a good chance to convert in traffic and against help defense … Has become very confident operating on the block with his back to the basket … His wide base allows him to get good position, where he can seal and receive the ball very deep … He has nice patience inside, a variety of moves and extremely good footwork which makes him a difficult match up … Can effectively turn to both shoulders … Uses a nice spin move, where he covers a lot of ground but can still keep his balance … Is very aggressive going to the glass, and likes crashing the O glass … Has improved his stats across the board in his sophomore season …

chad ford on the blazers pick
We had the Blazers pegged to take Claver with the 31st pick. I knew they really liked DeJuan Blair but they must have been scared off by his bad knees. Claver will stay overseas for maybe three years. but he’s got great potential. He’s athletic, skilled and one of the best up-and-coming talents in Spain. But I wonder if Portland will regret passing on Blair.

weird
just caught this from the bulls website – an interview with the Bulls head scout after JJ worked out for us:
"James Johnson is a combo forward who tested very well athletically and basketball-wise," said Bulls Director of College Scouting Matt Lloyd prior to the draft. "His size, along with his ballhandling and passing abilities, will give him a huge advantage if he plays small forward in the NBA, which is his projected position."
Sooooo – if the Bulls think his projected position is a 3…wtf? Deng’s backup? Maybe Deng and TT’s backup, so we’re committed to going small?
by kig on Jun 25, 2009 8:51 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
maybe Deng for Amare>?????
ohhhhhhhhhh
by LoveForTheGame on Jun 25, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe they're just rightly scared that Deng won't be healthy
From the perspective of an insurance policy, a guy who can legitimately play 2 positions has a lot of advantages.
Even with Deng healthy, Salmons is sort of small for a full time 3.

He moved into the late top-10 after the measurements – now he’s nearly out of the first round? This is unbelievable.
Sometimes, when a guy inexplicably falls in the draft, there really is no explanation. Think Danny Granger.
